Major performance issues while using Fraps.

Recommended Posts

I recently decided to start recording my DayZ experiences and would like to eventually put together a little mini series. So last night I installed Fraps and did a test run. I noticed a HUGE drop in fps whilst recording. It was bad, only running at about 10-15 fps. When I went back later and watched the video it seems to be running smooth (roughly 30fps). Is there anything I can do to fix this? I'd rather not have to drop my video settings too low. I guess I'm just wondering if there's something in Fraps' settings I can alter to achieve better overall performance while recording. That's issue number one.

My second issue is when I am recording, it seems that the recording stops on it's own. I have hotkeyed the "=" key to start/stop recording. After hitting it, I can see that I'm recording, but only for about 10-20 seconds before it stops itself. Is there something wrong with my Fraps settings? Or is this a common issue?

Keep in mind that I'm a total noob when it comes to this and I am open to any/all suggestions. Thanks.

if u were playing as u say at 10-15 fps ther eis no way the vid would be in 30fps

forget fraps, its really killing fps as u just saw

use dxtory instead (thats what i do and its much much better)

ur problem currently might be that ur hard drive is not able to write decent speeds (u need approx 200mb/s to write full 1080p @30fps; 120mb/s to write 720p @30fps)

fraps recording might be shutting down because of that, although im not sure, just guessing

try recording to a different hard drive than the one u have arma 2 installed on (not C or D drive, but completely different installation drive)

dxtory for example allows u to record to multiple drives at the same time, so if u have lets say 2 shitty drives with approx 70mb/s each, ull be able to combine them to haev a 140 mb/s write speed.

although its always better just to have one with 140mb/s xD

gl and happy recording

I use Fraps alot however I still maintain about 50FPS while recording my setting are on all the highest settings. I'm using SSD's however so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with the fact that my FPS only drops at most about 5 points while recording. check your recording settings and other settings in Fraps to make sure they are not seet to report FPS constantly etc...

+ 1 for Dxtory.

I record at 30 fps, 1280x720, medium quality, and rawcap (then convert after recording; saves on cpu) and I don't notice a hit what so ever. The only issue I have is that I also run Afterburner, so I have to be in game and have Dxtory running, then I can start up Afterburner.

I have heard that recording to an external drive, or a drive that the game is not on, will help. That being said, Fraps has always been a hog performancewise.

If you're running the free version of fraps then it can only record for 10 seconds or so. I lose about 10fps when recording & for me recording to an external drive doesn't really make a difference.

Think im gonna give Dxtory a try as i heard it records the audio in separate channels which is useful.

Thanks for the responses everyone! So the general consensus seems to be, ditch Fraps, get Dxtory, and get a secondary HDD. So that's what I'll be doing. I'll probably just get a 1TB external HDD. Hopefully that'll do the trick!

Thanks again everyone.

Just make sure it's 7200rpm or more. And FRAPS works fine, you don't have to get Dxtory.

..I have the same issues like the typical noob...

I can record Crysis and my fps drops from 120 to 100-115...don't even notice that I am recording...( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oyQtWMimQI&feature=c4-overview-vl&list=PLbTpzfuBM6DdqMS-7caXJ5Z7J0YY4mzuG )

Arma 3, on decent server like 60 fps, when fraps recording turned on..fps falls for like 5 fps, not worth mentioning..but in dayz..from cca 80 fps it falls to 30 or even less..

I am using two different SSD drives, my arma2/dayz are installed on system disk (intel ssd 120 gb), and recording is done to Samsung 840 pro 256 gb (very fast ssd)..and I experience that s***y frame drop ONLY in Dayz...

Ok I must admit I have an pretty old MB that has no SATA II, but still why can I record high end engine like cryengine without any probs..

thx in advance..

depends on pc spec. any recording software if recording decent standard will harm performance.

if your rigs upto date maybe get a new version of fraps (cracked fraps versions can stutter maybe that it  )

or ...you got fraps settings wrong.

I want to say that your issue is because some games are very cpu-heavy, ArmA being one of them.
