noob here, help please...

Recommended Posts

Okay. I am completely at a loss here.

I am brand new.

I just bought the game and installed dayz commander and dayz. I have it running.

Here are my questions...

How the hell do I find a damn weapon!? Every server I start on I have a flash light, a bandage, some pain pills, and a backpack. Can I not PUNCH!? Within 2 minutes of starting, without a doubt, I get rushed by zeds and killed. Ive tried being sneaky and looking around for something slowly, but I always get snuck up on and end up falling down, then bleeding, etc...wtf.

So, HIVES are what store toon data? and different servers can be connected to different hives? how the hell do you tell what server is on what hive? ever single server i have joined via the dayzcommander interface results in starting a new character. im so fckin confused...

How do I enter the global chat channel?

What is "being a raider" or going "raiding"?

How do I use items from the inventory? Double click?

Why cant I use e or q to lean?

How do I use the communication stuff?

When I d/c, why does it matter if your in town or not? does the toon stay ingame nomatter what?

Are there any kinds of skills, levels, etc?

Whats with building stuff?

I opened a backpack on the ground once, the menu it opened was EXACTLY the same as my "gear" menu, with the exception of it saying "czech backpack" up top instead of nothing when i just open my backpack. wtf.

Thanks for looking..im so lost. I want so badly to enjoy this game but for the life of me I cant figure anything out :(

1. Usually you can find a basic weapon in residential areas, If you wish to find a decent gun i would recomend traveling to an airfield or a millatry base.

2. The easiest way to tell which servers are connected is by looking at the game service provider. (eg: Hosted By Vilayer.com)

3. Using the < > keys you can switch between chat channels. Some servers have global channel disabled.

4. Raiding is when you loot places for example looting the supermarket for food or looking for someones stash of equipment in the forests.

5. Hit G to open your inventory. Right click the item you want to use or consume and select an option ( eg: right click on Soda can (coke) and click consume soda can)

6. Hit / to use the chat channel

7. There are no skills or levels, you just have to survive!

8. I don't understand?

9. Different backpacks hold larger amounts of gear, if you scroll over a backpack on the ground it will come up with an option to take the backpack.

If you need any more help send me a private message!

Don't bother sneaking. As soon as you spawn, run your ass off to the nearest dock. Check the industrial buildings for a hatchet. right click on it in your gear, select remove from toolbelt. Now you can kill zeds.

So, HIVES are what store toon data? and different servers can be connected to different hives? how the hell do you tell what server is on what hive? ever single server i have joined via the dayzcommander interface results in starting a new character. im so fckin confused...

On a hive server, you will carry your character data across every server on that hive. So you don't necessarily need to play the same server every time.

Use . to change the chat channel. rebind a key to voice talk over direct chat if you plan to use voice.

What is "being a raider" or going "raiding"?

How do I use items from the inventory? Double click?

I'm assuming raider to be equivalent to bandit, from context. Means surviving from loot taken from other players.

Right click items in your gear to use them.

How do I use the communication stuff?

See above.

When I d/c, why does it matter if your in town or not? does the toon stay ingame nomatter what?

If you dc in town, you may respawn into the middle of a firefight. You're also pretty helpless for a few seconds when you spawn, so consider that as well.

Pretty much what US Elite said. There is zero experience/skills/ANYTHING in this game, and you can forget that anything close to it will ever be implemented. Never get attached to good gear, you are going to eventually die. When being chased by a horde in a city, run indoors (since Zeds can only walk in buildings) and then run back out a different entrance. You should be able to lose their line of sight pretty easily. Crouch run in big cities so you still move fast without being too loud. Always watch possible sniper perches, chances are someone is camping there for guys like you to go looting. As you learn how to play, backpacks will become extremely useful, with the bigger ones being able to hold an extra primary weapon. To activate items such as food, drink, bandages, etc., go to inventory, right click, and the option should come up. Upon spawn, loot up in big cities and then get out ASAP, once you have a water canteen, a hatchet (doesn't have to take up primary weapon slot, goes to toolbet), hunting knife, and box of matches, you can become completely independent in the woods by hunting animals and refilling water from ponds, lakes, and water pumps. Always loot as fast as you can. Any questions?

*EDIT* Should also bring up medical supplies. You have several different effects in this game. Most common is bleeding, has a good chance of happening when falling, getting shot, or getting hit by a zed. Can be stopped with bandages, which are extremely common.

Have a small chance of breaking legs when getting hit by a zed, and are guaranteed to get one when getting shot in the leg with a decent weapon and falling from great heights. Can be fixed with slightly rarer morphine, which can be most commonly found in hospitals, medical tents, and military areas such as fire houses. Always make sure you have at least one morphine on you, as getting a broken leg is basically suicide.

Can go into shock when falling or being attacked by a player. Basically, it's a repellent for people to Alt+F4 during battle, as all it does is cause you to fall unconscious when logging back in. Wears off on its own after 3-5 minutes.

Falling unconscious, as mentioned above, happens on relogging with the shock effect. It can also happen if a zed hits you and you have 9,000 blood or below, and you can also randomly fall unconscious with less than 3,000 blood. If another player is with you, he/she can use an epi-pen to jerk you awake.

Experiencing pain can happen any time you fall, get shot, or are hit by a zed. Causes extreme shakiness in first-person, can be fixed with fairly common painkillers.

When low on blood, another player can administer you a blood transfusion with a moderately rare blood bag. This restores you to full health after being applied. Health can also be gained by eating food; 200 blood for canned food, 800 blood for cooked steaks.

Sickness also happens when players get too cold. Below 33C (or something like that) will give you a cold, which will cause shakiness similar to being in pain. Can be fixed by running in daylight, staying by a fire, or staying indoors/in a vehicle. A more dangerous infection (has a very small chance of happening at 36C or below I believe) will cause you to cough and splutter and lose 3 blood per second until you reach 6000 blood. This can only be fixed by antibiotics, by far the rarest medical item in the game and of which can only be found in hospitals. It currently takes a very long time to actually get sick from cold weather, hopefully it goes faster in the future.

Run the Arma2 infantry tutorial to get comfortable with the game.

You're not looking for a gun yet. Find food and water and DON'T BE SEEN OR HEARD.

If you are spotted, make sure you are standing all the way up (not crouched), and run. Put things between you and the zombies. If you are in a town, run through a house.

Don't bother stopping to pick up anything while being chased. You will take 30 minutes picking up an item and will die.

As for hives: use DayZ Commander to search for and join servers. If the name of the server you are looking at has a little cloud in the description, it is not on the "public" hive. Therefore, your persistence will only be saved on that one server.

Stick with plain-jane public servers until you know what is going on. That way, you can join another server when the 3 you tried previously are lagging out due to never having been restarted.

Forget guns. You will find yourself in far more trouble because you fired a weapon. Trust me, but you probably won't, so you'll learn anyhow. Zombies can hear very well.

Forget building stuff.

Get an axe. Only the ones you find on the ground - not the ones that are wedged into a tree stump - those are scenery only.

Axe goes on your belt.

To use it, you have to right click it from inventory and choose "remove from toolbelt".

You can't do that if you have a rifle, unless you put the rifle in your pack, which you won't be able to do because the standard pack won't fit in it.

Once you figure out how to equip the axe, you will have to reload it before swinging it.

Careful with that axe, Eugene. 1-swing kill.

Good luck. Check out the tutorials in the sticky at the top of this forum.

Being almost 2 days new I can so relate to your questions.

For some commands go here: http://www.allgame.c...76&tab=controls - print these pages and it will help in game with most commands. I still don't know how to hide a body - but I have not seen one so it does not matter. When I start game I press ( . ) period to get main channel first. But no one talks in the smaller server anyway. I also press X to crouch immediately or Z to lay down till I get my bearings.

One person told me to go into Arma 2 and run the tutorial. I was not hard and it was quick. I learned so much about commands, driving, had a gun range. Very nice!!!

Others know more than me but I have been asking these questions for two days. I posted the maps I use in another thread I posted. I just today located my first ingame map.

Great advice someone game was locate DayzCommander a server with only a couple people. There are so many snipers waiting in the larger activity servers. Total Bummer!!!

I have found a axe or hatchet to be great with zombies - also running in circles around buildings and thru evergreen trees is a great way to lose them. If there are to many just dive into a huge bush and quickly lay down and don't move. For me, they usually leave.

I am just learning about being self sufficient - and was just told to food restore blood - get an axe or hatchet, knife, matches - so I can kill animals, build a fire and stay alive. Also look at the maps and see where water is - lake and have something to put it in so you don't have to stay in town.

If you locate a small activity server, take your time with zombies and get an axe or hatchet which seem to be everywhere you will be able to survive.

Take it from another noob, early game is a struggle, can be so boring till you get a map, and you do a lot of running till you get used to what the zombies do.

One last tip. I heard on video - and seems true - zombies don't see well - the go by hearing. So crouch and run slowly even when you are close to them, they may not know you are there. If you are chased and have no axe, stand up and run if you need to (in circles) around building in city or thru trees in woods. Use the numeric key pad 1 and 3 to look behind you to see if it is still there.

I am still having a lot of questions and a tough time, but believe me players are the worst part of the game. You will get used to the zombies and regular game play.

This forum has been a perfect place to ask questions also. Beside this forum, Youtube and google are great for questions. Some guy have the top 10 things noobs like us need to know. Then there are others like someone named Frankie (I think) and others that appear quite good at game. Watching their videos gave me an idea or what to expect. But nothing helped more than just losing over and over and asking questions here to begin to help the newness and frustration. Expect hackers to appear from no where and people attacking you unarmed for no reason. It appears to be the norm on larger servers. Look at map in link l listed so you can get an idea of where you will locate in specific buildings. On small server church had so much. Changed pack and found all sorts of things. Hospital was good for med supplies after I located it on map.

Did anyone answer about why it mattered were you end you game session - in town or not? I have ended both in town and out. But I always hide flat under a bush, a tree, or behind something first. I figure in a low activity server I can hide in town if I lay down behind something and am careful. I am sure others have better ideas but "for me" with the sniping - and trying to get my bearings when I return - I want to be hidden very well before leaving game. Also, I don't want to appear in a group of zombies just waiting to attack so I always try to hide under something - laying down. So far it has worked.

I know, I am going on forever - but what the post above said about guns is so true. Guns make noice and attract everything. An axe or hatchet is silent and does not run out of bullets so you can isolate zombies one or two at a time - one hopefully. I quit picking up bullets when I did not have gun. I never locate a gun and bullets in same place and axe seem to be easier to hit with. Strange thing tho with axe. I always have to press R for reload after getting axe from tool belt before I can use it.

If you start with the quick arma2 tutorial and print the commands you will have a much easier game - Guaranteed!!!

Good Luck - Have a great week!!!

It's a game with a very steep learning curve.

I used the first day (while I was downloading the game) - the whole damn day reading guides and watching videos and tutorials on how to do stuff and I still had loads of questions. Which I answered on my own because I found out the hard way. I'd certainly advise you to check the wiki here (http://www.dayzwiki.com/wiki/Main_Page) and the map here (http://www.dayzdb.com/map) you will need those constantly open for the first 2-3 weeks of playing. Other than that, well there are plenty of guides for pretty much everything, youtube and google are your friends!

Good luck

All buildings - lootable or not - have zombies around them so don't look for a house with no zombies. As zombies only can walk indoors, look for large buildings like barns and warehouses with an opening. If a zombie detect you, just make a mad dash for the building. Once inside, it's easy to dodge the zombies and you can loot if you're fast enough.
