Ghosting is when you are in a gun fight with a guy, you log out, log in on a different server, while on different server, you change your position, then log out, come back to the server with the guy, and log in and shoot him from behind.

I am going to sound like such a noob but what is ghosting. I am familar with server hopping and exploting but not ghosting.

That's why it's best to find a good private hive. People really take the whole private status too far and do spawn equipment for themselves, all of these rMod's, DayZ Fallujah and what not are too far also. However, in the event that you come across my private hive when the SA server package is released; I would like to see people play on it of course, but I would like people to see that it's just the same as a public hive; only more independent which means that there will be nothing like hopping. However that's just my opinion, we're all entitled to our own. I have yet to see a fix for ghosting and hopping etc, I may even prefer to play Public once they're released, if they're secured enough.

I enjoyed playing on private servers on the mod and look forward to them appearing for the SA, so long as they are easy to pick out from the public hive servers. I avoid modded versions of the vanilla game but if people want to play on them then thats fine, I don't believe it affects the vanilla game in any way. If they are regulated properly then I don't see any issue with them at all, the benefits of no ghosting or sever hopping had a massive positive impact on my enjoyment of DayZ too.

If you had read my earlier posts I made it quite clear that I have played on private hives with "fair" admins. I never said my opinion mattered more than anyone else. I completely understand why people would want to be an admin so that they can micromanage their experience. I have no problem with you wanting that or sharing your opinion. I'm just trying to help you understand the point of view from people who don't have the disposable income to waste on servers to become admins. I am not defending ghosting or combat logging which WILL be fixed and SHOULD be fixed. Maybe since you run all of your own servers you've never had to endure one where the person who owns the server fucks with your experience and bans if you if kill them. Many people here have experienced that though and don't want it.

There's a little thing I like to call FATE, in dayz. It comes from the acceptance of using MINOR (MAJORs are things like loot cycling, ghosting, server hopping) exploits. Like, Teamspeak, Web Browser Maps etc. The basis is, that whatever you use in-game, from an out-of-game source, effects your fate... corrupting it. You won't get the dayz experience by using out-of-game sources. Why not wonder around the map, aimlessly? Why not get lost? Wonder where the fuck you are once and a while, what's so bad about that? You don't need a map and you don't need to make a thread about not needing several maps. Game design is = Have 4 maps that are kinda easy to find or have 1 map that is 4x as hard to find. Either way, you'll get the map sooner or later. Personally, I don't care. Training myself off the maps.

I like private servers. They prevent ghosting/ server hopping and allow us to have multiple characters at once instead of being linked to a single global account.

Players who exploit the ability to server hop and players who don't.
phL (DayZ) replied to hannibaldaplaya's topic in New Player Discussion
i don't get the advantages of the global hive concept anyways... it just makes all the bad things possible (hopping, ghosting, oh its nighttime -> change server,...). the thing for me to do in the mod was always to find a stable, well managed private hive and stick to it. oh... medics ;-) -
Main reason private servers are wanted is to squash hackers, server hopping, combat logging, and ghosting. You can't do those with the stupid public hive structure that is in place on public servers. White listing and more control over the server does an excellent job of stopping the bs in dayz.

Rolling Update Rev. 0.30.113953
Sleeping Tobi replied to Hicks_206 (DayZ)'s topic in News & Announcements
tents will never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever (10 million evers later) decrease ghosting. Ghosting is while combat logging going onto another server to gain an advantage over the opposition then logging back into said server just to kill the poor player. Tents on the other had is a good idea but what am I going to put in these tents more M4s? Edit: better idea then the tents put stuff under ground but the loot degrades over time. Say it takes a week to get stuff from pristine to ruined. -

Third person view removal from SA discussion
serenityrick replied to lev's topic in General Discussion
Those views "work" because those are arcade games. You can't 360 no scope in DayZ nor should you be able to. Besides, the DayZSA 1st person view works fine if you're playing correctly. You can't side step strafe at 30 mph or bunny hop or spin 180 degrees like you're on ice but nor should you be able to. If you're clearing out buildings or tents or moving up on someone, it's not only fine but works beautifully. Checking your corners, side stepping slowly around corners while you "slice the pie" moving past a room.. that all works. It works fine. Again.. people are way too used to 3rd person ghosting a room or area, seeing someone then walking into it firing from the hip in the exact location of an enemy. That is not good for gameplay and frankly not good for the game. -
I want a gut that can: - Bring my lost session back - Stop people from combat logging and ghosting - and make my character animations better. Can you do that? would be awesome if you could put a gun like this into game.

The KOS conundrum, problem/solution.
Combine (DayZ) replied to McBonkhead's topic in General Discussion
With more long-term goals and features we'll hopefully see a bit less of that in general. You can never get rid of it in this game. And in some ways it belongs to the game. Some people just play the game that way. But it's still a game. They, depending on what they do ... ... can ruin the day of other people ... might probably never witness the interesting (happy end or not) player interaction we see and like in many videos It's almost logical. You can't have it all. You either do this or that. But everything has pros and cons. If you play the game in a certain way, and only in that way (for example being a KOS loner ) then you miss out on some stuff. Sometimes it saves your skin, sometimes that's what gets you killed. You never know. I just dislike being a dick in game. By that I mean things like ghosting or sitting on the coast killing unarmed people / fresh spawns for no real reason. Again, the game also permits you to do it and any player should eventually expect death. Apart from glitches. But that doesn't necessarily mean you should always do what you can do, in my book. But then again my playstyle is a bit different. To each their own I guess. -
The best idea against server hopping
joe_mcentire replied to thomas28's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
my take: increment (exponentially) spawning times as well as spawning radius with every hop.. by extreme you spawn after 15 mins not in elektro but in the ocean. it would be in need of a good decision-making process to distinguish between "regular server-change" or a "hop/combat log" my conclusion is: the almost "best" trade-off would be the radius thing. it would obstruct hopping for loot/combat logging/ghosting tremendously edit: what if you say "but then i'd spawn anywhere, completely vulnerable in the middle of an open area". hmmm that'd be a good point. what if you would always spawn lying on the ground for example... but that's just an idea -

Like the mod the future of the game lies in mods and more importantly private hives and servers. It's just a better way of controlling hackers, server hopping, combat logging and ghosting. -
Suggestion to get more night time play
Karmaterror replied to DevilDog (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
But but....24 hour cycle....realism....booooo! I can see the allure of a shorter day night but that's a real immersion breaker for me. 1 hour of night just dosent seem worth it lol. I like the idea of the servers being locked to all the same time, but yeah without the short day night its unfair on others. Grrrr theres gotta be a way to get em playing at night but keep immersion.....wait....private hives!! If your server was your home you would have no choice but to play at night. For me that's the best solution, make each server private and you cure night play, ghosting, server hopping, low pop gearing, (and with a good loot spawn timer) farming aswell. If they did add shorter cycle id say no shorter that 50% so 6 hours each 12 hour full day. -
Server owners restarting server to rollback their deaths...
Lowbi replied to Lowbi's topic in General Discussion
or... add a mechanic that auto moves a player to the nearest edge of town, if they logged out in town, to prevent them from ghosting, but it would still allow server hopping -
Huge NO to this suggestion. If you want to see the implications multiple chars have on a survival game, go check WarZ aka. Infestation (or vice-versa) forums. Vengeance ghosting, camping same place with multiple chars, char mules, etc. Those are just a few factors that eventually shift the game from PvPvE to PvP with loot finding, after which we can add global inventory, safe zones, and merge Bohemia with HP together with Hall and Titov. To all of you who want convenient solutions: DayZ is not a convenient game, and nor it should be. Everything you want to do should be achieved by hard and long work, which makes you even more cautious of not loosing your (only) character. If you want to reach your friends, it should be hard and time consuming. If you find this discouraging, close the game, uninstall it, and play something else.

Preface: Please keep this thread clean and civil. If you don’t like the ideas, tell me so but please do it in a civil, respectful manner. Thank you! Also, I posted this in “General Discussion” because I want to discuss the features of the server, not only advertise. Welcome to -=[ Elysium ]=- (not related to the 2013 Sci-Fi-Movie)! With the introduction of PRIVATES HIVES in DayZ-Standalone we will re-open the -=[ Elysium ]=- server. Elysium was founded about a year ago as a DayZ Origins RP server, it had a whitelist consisting of over 100 players. People had to write a decent background story to apply as well as give their word of honor not to hack, cheat or dupe in any way. We will soon re-open -=[ Elysium ]=- as a DayZ Standalone PRIMETIME Server, combined with a new website or Facebook page. This server will be for players who only have a limited time available to play DayZ and wish their limited time to be especially exciting, but it may also appeal to hardcore players wishing to have a new and exciting way to play DayZ. In the next few days we will start recruiting: AdministratorsModeratorsEvent ActorsEvent ExtrasIn-Game-Journalist/StreamersWhat you can expect from the -=[ Elysium ]=- PRIMETIME server: • AGE RESTRICTION: The server should support players of at least 18 years of age. • PRIVATE HIVE: The server will have a private hive and a database separated from the public hive. You will have a separate character on this server which you can’t bring into the public hive. This also means there will be no server hoppers and no people “ghosting” on this server. • ADMIN ONLINE: The server will be monitored 12/7 by administrators supported by moderators helping you out when getting stuck, giving you tech support, answering questions about the game, giving support when being subject to griefing. Administrators may be contacted via Skype or on our Teamspeak Channel. In the far future we hope it will be possible to contact admins via an ingame command (/admin <text>). • PRIME TIME: Every day at the time most players will be able to play (like from 8pm-12pm, depending on the server’s time zone) there will be four hours of PRIME TIME. During this period, trained event actors will be online ingame, playing persistant roles. Those roles may include - special bandit characters - medics - special lone or groups of survivors with special needs (like Clementine from the TWD game) - small communities living at special locations like Devils Castle (remember the movie “Reign of Fire”?) - groups of surviving military - a setup for a big community with a governor like in TWD’s Woodbury - scientist looking for a cure for the infection and so many many more. You may encounter those characters at random or by visiting the location they live in (if they are at home). In the future we want players to be able to flag themselves as “available for events”, combined with the admin features “map” (showing all locations of players) and “teleport”. When these features are available and you're flagged as "available" you can expect to experience an exciting encounter over the course of the next 30 minutes. Please note: All sessions will be monitored and directed by an -=[ Elysium ]=- GAMEMASTER. The characters themselves won’t have any special powers, only the GAMEMASTER will be able to equip and teleport them to their location. • YOUR PERSONAL STORY: It will be taken care that every player will have a unique special and personal story or mission in the game, if they like to have one. At character setup you’ll be asked if you’d like to have YOUR PERSONAL STORY. You will find YOUR PERSONAL STORY over the course of your first week playing on the server (or it will find you, depending on the admin features available to us). YOUR PERSONAL STORY will be a dynamic story in the mindset of DayZ, The Walking Dead or any other good zombie movie or book. This story will react on what you do. If you kill the guy who was bringing you a message, or you kill the nice family who was asking for your help, the story will still go on. Something will happen that relates to what you do. • BECOME-A-LEGEND: In the end your story will develop into a role you play on the server, the way you play the game will shape your role. Maybe you are an infamous bandit, maybe you are the nice guy, the medic, the lead of a small or a big group, a cities mayor. The role won’t be defined by any rules or restrictions, it is a reflection of your actions ingame. • IT WILL BE NON-PROFIT: [Edit: We will try to get this server going for about three months. But after that] In the future we won’t be able to run this server free of charge. Please note, this is just an idea at the moment, not a business model. [Edit: This shouldn't be about money making, but about sharing the cost when you enjoy what you get.] Of course everything involving money has to be approved by Bohemia Interactive first. I am thinking about a non-profit solution, where every Dollar or Euro paid goes directly into hosting costs and paying a small compensation for administrators and actors (and actress) as well as writers, directors and gamemasters. The more players willing to play on our PRIMETIME server and the more those players are willing to pay the more content and “act-ion” can be provided for them. [Edit: "Non-profit" also means that there is 100% transparency about the costs.] • CLOSED SERVER POPULATION: After the server reaches a number of players, the whitelist will be closed for new players. Up to a certain maximum amount (120-200% of the maximum server connections), players can still invite friends to join them on the server. There will be a lot of unique players on the server but you’ll also be able to learn to know some players by meeting them in game. That also means that your actions carry consequences. If you’re a known bandit roaming around Stary Sobor, people may not approach you in a friendly kind of way. • STILL A DAYZ EXPERIENCE: There will be no high level item handouts, no ingame-shop, there will be no shortcuts for players getting loot. It won’t be easy-mode. You’ll still sneak through cities for your can opener, you’ll still be killed at the beach for your axe. There’ll still be a massacre at Balota, there’ll still be bandits at NWAF. It will still be the DayZ experience. Plus a lot of fun random encounters, a lot of fine dialogue (with YOU), a lot of moral choices, many great adventures, persistant (but not immortal) actor-characters. Think of it as Skyrim meets DayZ but it’s all live and everything can happen. There are no NPC. Everything is possible. Encounters and events won’t be scripted, but a lot of thought will be put into what may happen and what will allow the story to progress. Thanks for reading this far. If you have the time, please answer my questions: Would you like to play on the -=[ Elysium ]=- PRIMETIME server?Would you like to join the -=[ Elysium ]=- PRIMETIME staff? What other features would you like to see on the -=[ Elysium ]=- PRIMETIME server?Would you even be willing to pay for a server like this? If yes, how much are you willing to pay per month?

## hour player lock / Gear locked to server!
Lancer 2-2 replied to WarAndRuin's topic in General Discussion
Best way to dampen down server hopping and prevent "ghosting" is to add a 15-30 minute lock timer for joining a second server within X time of leaving the first. So: You join Server A, leave Server A and join Server B within 5 minutes of leaving server A. When you leave Server B you get hit with a 15-30 minute countdown locking you to Server B. Unfortunately if you are unluck enough to have two de-syncs with both servers then you will have to wait the timer out. Alternatively You join Server A, leave Server A and join Server B within 5 minutes of leaving Server A. As soon as you connect to Server B you are hit with a 30-45 minute lock to Server B preventing you from quickly moving back to Server B or on to Server C if it a quick loot dash hop. This one will prevent someone from ghosting and may dampen down loot server hopping. I am looking forward to a private hive where none of this is possible. -
## hour player lock / Gear locked to server!
Shadyfizzle replied to WarAndRuin's topic in General Discussion
its gonna be some sort of cooldown between switching servers, idk if it will be an arbitrary number like 10 minutes between switching servers or if it will be dynamic with the amount of times you switch servers, but i can pretty much guarantee that it will be something along these lines also eliminates ghosting btw -
Lock player characters to a server for a set time period
seannybgoode posted a topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Ok, so before I get lynched for the title, hear me out. First off, there are a couple of things that have long been a part of DayZ, that I feel have broken the mechanics of the game: 1. People don't play at night. 2. People log out when attacked, log-in in a different spot, and then kill you. 3. People go to a place where good loot spawns, and then go to 20 different servers until they are kitted out. 4. People log out when attacked, and just log in in a different server. What would fix this? Lock player characters to a server for 24 hours. Not forever, since there are plenty of reasons one might want to change servers from time to time, but make it such that one can only change servers once every 24 hours. The benefits: 1. People would be more dedicated to a server, less likely to be a total ass. 2. Hackers couldn't hop from server to server without resetting their progress. 3. People would be more inclined to play at night. 4. Loot farming is dead. 5. Ghosting is dead. 6. Combat logging is now less beneficial - players may end up logging back in to find their attackers waiting for them. So there's the argument for you. If you're honestly playing this game for its intended mechanics, and not one of those taking advantage of the system, then I don't see why one could be opposed to this. +1 if you agee. If you disagree, post your reasons, and don't be an ass about it. -
These actions will only encourage to people KOS.

What's ghosting? -
You would need a way to stop ghosting. I think this should already be in the game for high end loot spots. Make it so that anyone that logs out in that location automatically gets transported 100 yards in any direction when they log in.
