This idea pretty much beats the purpose of having cloud of servers to jump with your character. <_< Would be much better not to restrict server switching to play with friends, but you can still make counter-measures to stop ghosting and looting, such as having timer with different factors. Last time when played and population of the server you are trying to join in, also once you are connected to different server you cant join previous one for a long time to prevent ghosting.

Can admins kick you for suspected server hopping/ghosting?
DoctorWrongpipes replied to thequantum's topic in General Discussion
Despite the general dickbaggery of the admins of this server, you logged in (so by inference, out) in a regular spot for ghosting and hopping. -
Are you admitting to ghosting? If so, how dare you call anybody a coward or noob. Like it is hard to hide from a large group, it is also not hard to spot that many people coming from a distance. Ghosting should be a perm ban offense tbh.

So last night me and a big group of people had a checkpoint set up at 3 Valleys so that we could take shoes and give out Sodas/Pops. While we were doing this we were fired upon and myself along with another group member was killed. I know this is part of the game and I am not complaining. After retrieving my equipment, almost all of my friends had been wiped out.. there were 10 of us. We would locate a person, and after taking a shot at him, missing or making contact, they would " Ghost " ( Server Hop ) so that they could bandage up and move to a different building to cheat. After everyone in my squad had been killed, I managed to make my way back to Kam and then cut across the road into the mountains and back up to 3 Valleys. ( These people may have had hacks because they were picking people of 100's of Meters away with M4's ) I made my way back up to 3 Valleys and caught two people off gaurd. Turns out they were the Ghosters, and apparently there were 3 all together. I killed the 2 members I caught off gaurd, and then somehow got Sniped in the courtyard from the mountainside, and if you know the map then you know you can't be hit in that position because there is a house there. The point of this was to tell a story that I had fun experiencing, and also to raise awareness for Ghosting because it isn't really that fair, Thanks

Replace written status cues with verbal 'thoughts'
Roshi (DayZ) replied to Roshi (DayZ)'s topic in Suggestions
Yeah this sort of stuff is exploratory - I want to see what other possible ways there are of getting around some of the more fiddly problems in the game (e.g. ghosting, expressing sensations/drive-states in a limited interface). Just because I suggest something, doesn't mean that's the way I think things should go - more testing the possibilities... So happy for critical (but not for uncritical) feedback :) -
Should you only have one character per server?
Roshi (DayZ) replied to Roshi (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Could go a few ways: 1) You only have one active character at a time that is limited to one server. Changing servers may prompt you - "If you wish to join this server, your character on another server will die." Or similar. 2) You have the possibility of a few active characters on different servers so people can engage in group play with one character and lone wolf with another. Also gives you a work around if a server is full or down. 3) Unlimited number of players (i.e. you could join any server but each server has a discrete character - i.e. if you've never played on that server before, or you're most recent character on that server has died, then you start at a new spawn). As per the poll. I know it's not perfect - just exploring the possibility as a way of getting around server-hopping to grab loot in military areas or for ghosting to kill other players. -
Combat Logging - Massive Game Killer for DayZ
Element47 replied to crusader_111's topic in General Discussion
15 minutes combat flag timer. if a player logs out while combat flag active, his character remains in game, visible and attackable, until end of timer. of course, we'd need reliable means to determine whether a player entity is in combat or not. so, what could trigger combat state? after given this issue some thought, i think one possible approach could be the relative visibility: if a weapon is used while a player entity is rendered on screen, the source player and any player he is able to see recieves/refreshes combat flag. (maybe additionally any character that is within 30m range but beyond FOV) 15 minutes work fine in EvE Online, which features ruthless PvP. If you took part in a heated firefight at one of the hotspots, 15 minutes is by chance approx the time you'd need to find a safe logout spot in some foliage. Would probably help with ghosting too. as a medic, i suffer less than more combat-oriented players from this awfully cowardish plague. but a plague it is, and it needs to be addressed, as soon as balancing combat becomes an important issue on the agenda. but i am not in support of the "gief feature X nao" mentality. the issue is important, the amount of discussions - and the passion in them - show it clearly. thus i am absolutely convinced that the dev team is aware of it, and how important it is to the player base. i am sure they will react accordingly. -
Because you seem to think that ghosting = fine and dandy! Obviously.

NWAF Sniper's Convention, for experimentation and range finding (proposal)
crazykage replied to crazykage's topic in General Discussion
Amazing. I make a useful, constructive proposal that if done would benefit the community, and what do I get? 1st reply is a sarcastic comment about my post's legitimacy. 2nd reply EDIT:....was deleted. Thank you mods... Why is it that if a post is not about KoS whiners, KoS braggers, people complaining about the state of the game, or server hoppers, ghosting, or combat loggers, it just gets buried or derailed by trolls. Go away. I invited you to reply with a difference in opinion with civility. Not to derail my constructive ideas with childish trolling in the first few replies. -
Yeah, well it's DayZ. "Get used to it" people say. But just a tip here : Always be ready for the worst when you kill someone with good gear, you can never know if he has buddies or not. (( I got betrayed by a guy that I helped, he just called his buddies and killed me with my friend. DayZ in it's flesh )) Be ready for the worst all of the time actually, especially when you meet a guy that is friendly and has an axe. And about the ghosting thing - It is really stupid, but it has a weak spot. ..."Funny thing is I heard them all log in and reload.." So when you hear this, right near you, and two people, either spray them with anti-life bullet's or get the hell out of there. Good luck next time man. -Dovis

I don't run with a gun, so I don't find the need for the insta-magi-server loot jumpy crap that the hardman PvP Kos-kiddies go in for. That's right folks, I don't feel the need to run for the M4, Mosin, FNX or Magnum. I don't collect them, their accessories or their ammo. Bite me. You CAN pretty much play the game anyway you feel like ATM, and if you feel that your experience can be enhanced by server jumping for fat loot, then go do that. There is no right or wrong here. It's a 'feature' of the game. Same as ghosting and combat logging. People are going to do it until such time as they can't anymore. But it's not the only way to play this game. I'm currently living in Stary Sobor on the Delicious Donuts server, and running the Supermarket there. Every server reset I'm in game I run around Stary and see what's been delivered and bring it back to the store and restock the shelves. Usually lots of clothes, footwear and food, a few books, camping and sports gear, and occasionally a Mosin and ammo. Lay it all out and then sit back and wait for the customers to roll on by up the street. So if you're in the mind to, and can bear the ping and lag to a southern hemisphere server and are in the Stary area, drop on by for a chat. Maybe trade for what you want or just come by and take a few things to get by, I don't mind which. I've got a new shipment coming by in a few hours. So play how you want.

I totally agree, if that would happen and no ghosting involved, it would be worth losing a character

Combat Logging - Massive Game Killer for DayZ
crusader_111 replied to crusader_111's topic in General Discussion
Part of my point is this guy/girl must of been at the ready to combat log, I didn't even hit him/her and they combat logged and I had a bolt action rifle and from what I saw he/she had a fully modified M4 which if he/she just turned around would of totally rinsed me but no, they took the cheap way out. Also if they get away with it and are able to ghost you then what...fuck it shit happens? No. How the games meant to be is a persistent world including the players in it. If they start ghosting everywhere and vanishing as soon as trouble arises DayZ will never become the game Dean wants and what we want. -
Combat Logging - Massive Game Killer for DayZ
crusader_111 replied to crusader_111's topic in General Discussion
I think advancing play-ability i.e not dying to ghosting/combat logging assholes really helps in the whole 'testing' section and if it helps players to enjoy the game more and want to play/test more than in my eyes its a massive bonus. -
Either way, BOO! I don't care about server hoppers, since I've wtinessed too many people combat log (worse offense imo) for their to be so many innocents. Everyone is so quick to denounce publicly anyone for hopping, ghosting, whatever, but in the heat of the situation, if you get sniped and they make you bleed, but you hide, I'd be willing to bet (not swear) that the majority would log, and bandage in peace in a low pop. As for server hoppers, they are here. You don't have to deal with it, you don't have to like it, you don't have to participate, but it's here. I don't care much for it since I generally play on mid pop servers that get spikes close to 40 players, then drops again, then all military areas are suddenly stripped clean. So ambush them, its fun. Or don't, but keep it off the forums because you're boring. But again, for this video, BOO! I wish you would have cuffed him and been mean to him. Even if he wasn't a hopper. It's DayZ. You learn to live with death. (for all seriousness, I do the same thing at NEAF to practice sniping on mid-pop servers. I get there by server hopping. I still call it that when it's once and I don't do it for loot, right?) EDIT: I admit my hasty assumption was made purely out of bitterness for recently failing to kill a ghoster, and, in fact, falling victim to him. And to clarify, I was being sarcastic about server hopping. I change servers to find my clan, and thats it.

How do you snipe? (Finding ranges, positions, tactics.) Discussion.
crazykage replied to knyghtfalcon's topic in General Discussion
Southpaw. I like you. Id like to go hunting with you someday... And jonesy, don't take this the wrong way, but when I say "unsporting", what I MEAN is that you are abusing a game mechanic. By LEAVING, then hoping servers, and then Infiltrating back in, I run the risk that my prey will see me on the way in. I have to be careful not to give myself away as I reach my hide. And, on the same hand, another player in the area, who is being sneaky, checking his corners, etc., has a chance to see me, and is rewarded for playing the game smart. But if, instead, I just hop right in at the hide, that same player, who might have checked that spot moments ago, is now at an unfair disadvantage... Do you get my meaning? Im all for putting one's self in the more advantageous position. That's how you win. But not by abusing a mechanic in a manner that gives you an unfair and unrealistic advantage. I don't mean to offend you man, but in my opinion, this is only maybe one step above ghosting... -
Dayz Standalone will not survive without epoch style base building
phoboss replied to papermilk's topic in Suggestions
Don't get me wrong, I'm a private Hive guy myself, because in my opinion it fixes problems liike server hopping and ghosting. I'm just saying that player made constructions will have certain limitations when it comes to a central hive. -
The very 1st day was in fact Night. it was night time and i was using my torch. unknown to me at the time that I was waving a freaking lighthouse around. If I hadn't seen two heavily armed dicks (not bandits.. there was no attempt to steal anything) through the window in a spawn location a second before they burst in through the door, I would never have known what happened... KoS.. Welcome to DayZ, Bitch! My second interaction was hilarious. once again Night time. Elecktro Fire Station. I'm playing with a mate, pitch black... then from no where is this scary mother fucker playing eerie music on direct, wearing nothing but a mask and trying to bare fist fight us both...we run around for a good 2 minutes before we worked out what the hell was happening.. my mate saved the day with a fire axe... My 3rd interaction.. just completed our 1st ever run (not mod players) through balota, military base NWAF and across to the coast. finally have guns and ammo and havent seen anyone for about 4 hours. pretty sure we were in the south of berezino. and we notice zombie are being aggroed, run around the corner and see a guy with an axe and a mosin on his back being mauled by a zombie with 2 more closing in. We take out the 1st zombie and tell him to bandage and we mow down the next two.. have a nice chat offer a few items which he declines and tell him if he touches his gun before we leave, we'll drop him.. and then we hightail the hell out of there. Straight into our 4th interaction, find a guy holed up in one of the small towns and my mate runs into the building with me right behind "hi, how you going?" as we duck the axe the crazy man in swinging at us...my mate unleashes the M4 clip in close quarters in a panic.. and mows me down! and my character glitches and won't stand still, so bandages and saline wont work as apparently im moving while unconscious. his solution... .357 to the head. respawn and run back to my body, loot what i can and away we go again.. find a new spawn and our 5th interaction has started, have a chat offer assistance when BANG.. the spawn goes down right in front of us, we hightail for cover but my mate never gets there.. he goes down.. dead. I sneak around a building.. find the one of the shooters, unleash my M4... bang bang bang click click click.... forgot to reload. You Are Dead. My 6th interaction is when i find a guy on the roof of an office building in Berezino, and i get the drop on him with my Mosin and say Hi. guy hasnt got a Mic and types in return.. ok I'm cool with that. I tell him where to find a spare Mosin I found a few minutes ago and drop 5 rounds on the ground for him. And he offers me a "Thanx Friend" My 7th interaction which occured an hour or two ago, we were in the hills above the wrecked ship way up North, and I hate to say this but my Mate opens up fire on an unsuspecting fellow going about his business, It;s too late to worry about the morals and I open fire as well, the guy is winged but runs and finds cover. what ensues is a 15 minutes gun fight with positions being traded and rounds flying in both directions without any combat logging or ghosting. THIS IS WHAT DAYZ IS ABOUT!! My mate goes down to M4 fire after getting caught in a rock, respawns and runs like buggery to get back to me. I loop around for a better position to find that ol mate is now off the boat and circling through the forest, I'm taking snap shots with an unscoped mosin and missing badly.. he is running and blazing away with his M4. then a very tense 7 minutes passes with nothing happening and then i see movement.. and I land a hit with the mosin but he is still standing and running and I miss oh so many shots.... i run to the boat and head up for a vantage point.. movement in the trees while the enemy tries to scope me again... and it's over. He gets hit the head from behind with a wrench from newspawn mate. we unceremoniously loot his bodies, thank him for his valor and move on. -------------------------------------------------------------- I love the unpredictability and the player interactions that occur in DayZ, for the sake of a somewhat interesting read I left out the Multiple times i was spawn camped by armed guys and the many many new spawns that punched me in the face when i was a new spawn as well. also some of the abuse i copped... wow, glad my mother can't hear you boys.. she'd make you wash your mouth out with soap! To get the best out of this game my mate and i have a pledge, no matter what. we dont combat log.. never have never will, even if the other guy does and we get ghosted.. as my mate said to me.. fuck it, it's only gear. ------------------------------------------------------------ TL:DR: 1. KoS spawn camped 2. Freaky scary clown man trying to box us to death. 3. save a man from zombies, and leave him be 4. KoS attempt by new spawn which leaves me dead thanks to friendly fire 5 KoS'd 6 Friendly interaction. give ammo away , thanks Friend 7. A KoS attempt from our group, turns into a long and gruelling gunfire fight, and i would like to thanks this man for sticking around and seeing it out to the end, even when outnumbered. I really enjoyed it. it was tense and i was very very worried for my safety.

I honestly, honestly, can't for the life of me understand how so much of the community (or possibly just a very vocal minority) thinks the devs should waste their time trying to fix server hopping, when server hopping in itself is a symptom of loot not being dynamic yet. Combat logging, yeah that's a big issue that needs to be addressed, but you're mad because someone joined your server by the phat lewtz you were trying to take and killed you.People just need to stop being bad, when you hear the magazine reloading sound, gtfo. Stop hanging around military bases longer than you need to (honestly, how long does it take you to loot that this is a persistent issue?) How do you know that guy was a server hopper anyway, maybe he (and possibly his friends) logged out there earlier. You have no way of knowing who killed you, so you're just making assumptions anyway. The people whining about server hoppers are just as bad as the people whining about KoS, shut up and let the dev team work on fixing the real problems. Edit: that's not to say that ghosting isn't a issue, it is, and the fix to that would be a lock out, if you leave a server A and join server B, you're not able to rejoin server A for some amount of time, say 5 minutes.

In my opinion, private hives should only exist for mods, and I am talking about proper mods(not 1000+ vehicles), though, I guess that is still a mod. Server hopping, ghosting and combat logging will all be solved, on the public hive, or at least reduced to the point that it is not an issue. Private hives are not a solution for this, and yes, as already stated, the devs have already confirmed private hives will happen, and by the sounds of it, quite soon, as well as a separate official "hardcore" public hive, which will be first person only and other things to make DayZ the game it should be. I am not happy with the "separation"(both private hives and a hardcore/normal hive), but eh, id rather it be separated since third person wont be going away. As for private hives, people can go off in their own little private "sub-communities" separate from the public hives, enjoy your small communities and the problems that come with it, in an attempt to strap a band aid on a problem that can and will be fixed on the public hive.

I keep reading people on the forums using words such as "ghosting" and "combat logging" and I have no clue what those mean. Is there someplace I can look it up without appearing to be too much of a noob? :)
-
Now before people get moist, it doesn't mention server hopping (a real annoyance for me just now) or ghosting, but you'd expect if they don't they'll at least leave the hooks in for later. Thing is, though, Rocket has been in NZ for since NY and only just back in the office (I believe, or is just about to return, one of the two. I'm not sure as I don't stalk the poor guy), so the "delay" is just down to him having a holiday.

The thread escalated quickly... not sure if its worth writing something actually related to the topic here, but I'll give it a try. I think the idea of setting up a road block is quite fun. The first critique that most teams only run around ganking might be true, simply because it is hard to control a large group and you will have one or two trigger happy guys in it who might lose their temper pretty quickly and shoot the person in holdup dead. I am usually in a squad of three or four people and even that small number is hard to coordinate. Lack of coordination is probably the weak spot in every large group, a single attacker could land some hits, and retreat, then strike again. No ghosting needed and would be much more fun.
-
Guys stop feeding Zeet pls. and yes that was an insult. So back to topic, ghosting or combat logging of any kind is dumb and pointless. Dumb because you'll never know what the end result could've been, meaning you'll never know how really pro you are. Pointless because what's the point of having a gun in the first place if your never really going to enter a combat situation? Not only are bigger groups harder to be tactical with but they also will get spotted a lot easier. Perfect size for any group imo is 3, one sniper two ground guys. Though like they say the more the merrier so it's really about if your trying to have fun or be tactical.
