I found my very first SK5 and in excitement I switch servers to show my friends. Only to find I have to wait now a couple minutes. Alright no big deal I understand to stop ghosting and hopping as much. Then find out that servers only save a couple minutes before you log off. That is a horrible idea. This does NOT affect server hoppers because all they have to do is wait a extra minute or two then log off. It also will get people killed more easily because I logged in standing in the middle of the AIRFIELD! I was in a bush out side of it. luckily i didn't get shot but this is a horrible idea.

POLL Should The Timeout Timer be Increased, Untouched, Reduced or Removed?
leefriendfield replied to leefriendfield's topic in General Discussion
Heres my simplest fix to the issue of ghosting into bases. Buil in pricate hive servers. -
Ghosting is combat logging ( logging out during a fire fight) jumping to a new (empty) server positioning yourself to be in a better spot and coming back into server to "ghost" kill your enemies.

POLL Should The Timeout Timer be Increased, Untouched, Reduced or Removed?
cels replied to leefriendfield's topic in General Discussion
I like the direction its going in but also think they need to add to it when barricades and base building is implemented.. Which understandable its alpha and its a working progress. Just giving a heads up that people logging out next to a base, hopping on another server and moving 10 feet over, then logging back in to your server, putting them inside your barricades and base. Its going to cause issues if this is possible. Only way I think this issue could be fixed in the future is on top of the current ghosting/server hopping fix. They will also need to make it so changing to a different server spawns you elsewhere on the map. Change servers too many times too soon and you lose all your gear and you are spawned at starter spawn points. Obviously this should be a fix more so when item respawns are back in that changing servers so much should not be necessary. Would also stop people from just waiting out the timeout timer so they can just server hop to sit at miliary sites on multiple servers to loot them. -
As i said earlier, server stability seems fine to me. Server stability is a long ongoing process. Combat logging/Server Hopping/Ghosting were having a large negative effect of gameplay, so the developers released a method for us to test to fight this. In my opinion the system works well. Further, the servers are not owned or operated by Bohemia, meaning they can only work on server stability from a software standpoint. This can be difficult due to difference in server hardware. Some servers are gonna be great, others are going to suck, so at what point do you decide to stop working on optimization? They only have so many resources and right now most of those are devoted to fixing direct bugs in the game, and adding new content and systems to test. Should they continue to optimize servers? Yes. Is it going to happen quickly? No. Should they prioritize the optimization? They are.

I too am getting just horrible desync post patch to the point where I cannot interact with anything in my menu or even raise my weapon. Repeatedly and over most servers. The escalating wait times make a bad situation worse. I too agree with the need to curb ghosting and combat logging but as you eloquently stated, where are the priorities? Server infrastructure would be at the absolute top wouldn't you think? Has opened my eyes to the dev teams real intentions here. Have to laugh at the "legit" players so concerned with KOS exploits and not the overall stability of the game. If I had a dollar for every tard on this forum talking tough about their "kill-streaks" I would be a rich man. On the off chance that Rocket actually reads this : Love your game man, just having a hard time actually playing it. No problem with getting ghosting under control, just need a more stable product so I can enjoy the fruits of your labours. Please fix the horrible de-sync.

is it the games fault you are working and playing? so because "you" are attached to your gear and afraid to lose it, we must suffer with the combat logging and ghosting?
-
So far one of my favorite suggestions to combat "ghosting" is to have 30 seconds until the user can equip weapon or raise fists when logging in. The player can still move around and interact with the environment to escape zombies or other players. If you can't spot a person "ghosting" after that 30 second period then you are S.O.L.
-
You've made some valid points and I appreciate them. All in all, I've only been the "victim" of intentional ghosting twice in the time that I've spent in game and still believe it to be game breaking.

Not sure where that comment is coming from WRT what I wrote. I contend it is a deterent, even if not a perfect one. It isn't going to deter the most persistent exploiters, but NOTHING is. Even your solution wouldn't have bought you much. 5 mins staring at a timer or 5 mins running back. Take your pick. TBH, a squad of four sitting in one place or close enough to it that they can be killed by ghosting IS doing something wrong. I'm sorry. You don't just sit there and let the enemy flank you. End of. Your comment there.

To those who dislike the new combat logging timer
xRann replied to africanhungergames's topic in General Discussion
The problem I think some are experiencing is that they think of this as "punishment" for the way they play, connection, servers, or whathaveyou. It's not the case at all. As a means to curb exploits that the engine itself is limited in managing and this, for now, is a valid and effective means to do so. Perfect? no, but until better comes along this will do the job pretty well. There are two timers that were implemented. 1.) Logout timer to stop combat logging 2.) Login timer to stop ghosting and server hoppers You sir, are the one who is wrong. -
Ideas are ideas, please keep them coming. I don't think ghosting is "solved" per se, it's still a problem, just less of one. If you can come up with an idea that's less intrusive towards those that don't ghost, I may be more inclined to support it.
-
Not trying to "make my mark" here little fella. Funny you say the solution went in with the last patch - had a squad of 4 killed last night due to ghosting. If you think 5 minutes is going to detour people who ghost, you've got another thing coming. I know I know, we're bads and need to get better or find another game. *shrug* Forum mods, lock this thread please. If you can't beat 'em, might as well join 'em.

Not feeling it, I feel like the server-hopping penalties are probably enough to combat ghosting. This comes across as a little too extreme for me. It's like using a pickaxe where a scalpel is needed.

Do ya? Server hopping sucks. Almost as bad as ghosting. -
no you dont ..ffs... you pay a penalty for "ghosting" players, the so called "hoppers" are at least EVERYONE of the other players! trust me. i have i think 6 servers up. not one of them has more than perhaps 1/300regulars. EVERYONE hops between servers. ANYONE stating other ways is simply lying. they ALL change servers ..a lot... ..for loot...

It can be improved.. It may slowdown ghosting and server hopping.. But it doesnt stop it.. It does work somewhat for now though. Think how it will be when base building and barricades are in play.. You will want something to stop people from logging into another server, moving 10 feet, logging back into your server and being inside your base. Only way I can think of to really fix this is on top of the current system. Have it so you randomly spawn elsewhere on the whole map for switching to a different server. Switch too much, too soon. You lose all your gear and only spawn at fresh spawn spots. -

the timers are there to try preventing "ghosting" players ..thinking anything different is simply stupid and mostly argued by butthurt players being pissed because some of the other "hoppers" got there first =) -
Dude...they explained why this can be used as a ghosting combat logging exploit a million times already...

Systems: Players position was not saving on disconnect. IMO, due to the intentional ghosting, this is a real problem and game breaking IMO. If you feel the same, take a look at my post about it. Possible Solution/Fix for Intentional Ghosting. Other than that, Rocket, you and your team are doing a fantastic job. Many developers could certainly learn from you all. Thanks for the updates!! -
Although you make a good point about timer increases, I disagree with having a free relog first time round. I think the accumulative effect of both the combat log timer of 30 seconds and the server hop prevention timer go along way to aslo stifle ghosting. Also you have to think about the fact a players character now stays in the game for 30 seconds after you log. If there is no waiting penalty for hopping the player would essentially be leaving a copy of himself(although for a short amount of time) on a different server. This may allow for duping. Can you also imagine the number of people complaining because they got into a new server and then were killed on the old one because someone came across their char sat in a bush and died instantly on the new server? we would have 100s of threads popping up.
-
What are you a retard? why do you think those timers were introduced? to address exploits like combat logging, ghosting, and server hopping / loot farming. I.e. cheating. You can't have a meaningful discussion about the timers without referring to their purpose.
-
Sorry but it seems some people cannot apprehend server hopping, ghosting and combat logging is cheating, so there you go, i explained, and by the way did you even read the OP's post? He is whining about the whole things not specific to timers...whos stupid now bud?!

mssing replied to africanhungergames's topic in General Discussion
the timer has bloody nothing to do with what the buthurt players go on about "hoppers" or "loggers"! it is simply a measure to prevent "ghosting". nothing more. nothing less. you were/are all hoppers, the only difference was/is how long time you spend on a server before changing to another ..or so my serverlogs show... -

This has been tried before. Doesn't work. Alt + F4 or end process via task manager bypasses this. The current system is the best one I have seen so far to combat ghosting/server hopping/combat logging.
