People who want to role play apocalypse survival tend to pick lone wolf as a way to achieve this. I had adopted a super cautious play style during the early days of the mod, which means I've played alone and avoided player interaction for most of my hours in DayZ Mod/SA. I fancied myself a "zombie hunter" (28 days, 1,000+ kills longest run alone) for awhile and sometimes on rare occasions acted as hero/medic when the circumstances were just right. Admittedly during this time, helping new spawns was some of the most rewarding game play. After a long time I became "lonely" in DayZ and sought "interaction" full well knowing it wouldn't end well. I didn't want to join a clan so I found a high pop server and thought I might test my luck. Long story short, met a few legit friendlies, ran into a hacker, got teleported, mortars, died, regrouped with friendlies, took C4 from hacker box, leveled comm tower NWA, played with a couple of people from that 1 night for a few months repairing vehicles and making campsites. These days my latest roommate happens to be an avid gamer who found he really liked DayZ and I've been lucky to play with him over the last few patches. I also bought my brother DayZ through Steam because he got a gaming laptop recently. My days of lone wolf are most likely over.

Hemp can be used to craft useful items, such as cinderblocks and ghillie suits, and can be used to heal yourself. 11) We have Rabbitman Beer. Drinking a sixpack will bring your health back to full and remove your pain, but don't drink too much too fast! 12) Base raiding is allowed, but will be challenging. We've raised the prices of overpowered military vehicles and explosives to keep things in balance and give you something to work toward, as well as encourage you to loot and explore to find high-tier vehicles and loot. We also have: 1) AGN Trader Safezones. 2) Armored SUV and MV22 animations. 3) R3F towing and lifting, with customizations. 4) Enhanced snap building. 5) Active development, with new features and missions being added frequently. We carefully consider the effect of each feature on game balance. Suggest a feature or improvement, and it may be added in the game. What we are working on for the near future: 1) Farming. Combine pumpkins, sunflower seeds, or hemp with fish and a waterbottle to grow your own crops. 2) If the players show interest, we will add Origins vehicles. 3) Custom bases, caves, and castles across the map that anybody can claim and settle in. 4) More loot-filled AI bases, each with a unique twist. Shall we reiterate for the ignorant? Epoch DOES NOT HAVE SAFE ZONES. Some server owners have put in code to create safe zones around the traders or other areas but out of the box generic and enjoyable Epoch does not have safe zones. Are we clear now? Do we understand that Epoch is much like vanilla DayZ Mod BUT that server owners go and put in easy mode additions all over the place just like Private server hosts often do with Vanilla DayZ Mod? Okay, back to topic at hand. I have played on servers with safe zones. The admins often find they don't work. In many cases they will have to add additional rules like banning people who abuse the invulnerability of safe zones to pop in and out of the zone while shooting people. All kinds of issues arise. Soon they have to add in anti-stealing additions since now you can't shoot someone who walks up and rummages through your backpack but then that means you can't easily trade with friends(in the mod putting something on the ground is asking it to be deleted immediately) and people will do things like try and steal your vehicles as you can't get out of the safe zone on foot in time to shoot them before they zip away... it just gets annoying. What I did on my Epoch server to deal with people stating others were camping traders was to add in a few AI guards of the appropriate type. Neutral traders had no guards. The "friendly" traders shot anyone below -2500 humanity. The bandit trader shot anyone with humanity above -5000. The Hero trader shot anyone below 2500. The AI wasn't that hard to kill, but not seeing them at the trader meant someone had come along and killed them and was a warning for people to avoid the area as someone is probably camping it. Unskilled PVPers would sometimes die to the AI so the traders were, "Safe" in a semi realistic manner without a magical dome that shuts off weapons and damage.

The running speed is fast now to compensate for the lack of vehicles. People complain that we don't have bikes yet, but if they would do some research, they would see they basically are a bike with the current run speed.

Humvees and apaches are quite different you know, for example in an apache you can hover out of small arms fire and take out 8 vehicles before they know you are there, whereas in a humvee you are vulnerable to attacks with a decreased situational awareness with the possibility of mounting a machinegun position vulnerable to 360 degree small arms fire. Humvees will most likely be added just perhaps with no MGs, apaches won't.

Hell, let's go 300 player servers... then we can have 295 players in Elektro, or Berezino, or Novo, or Svet, or Balota, or whatever other "area" the most people spawn at ...And you'll have the same 5 people running between Balota -> NWAF and all the hot spots inbetween. If you want to impact the player experience (IE - run in to more people), you need to make more unique locations that encourage people to spread out (with an objective), and you need to spread the spawns across the map instead of all in 1 corner. Heli crashes are a good start. I also suggest: -Nerfing Balota much like NEAF was nerfed. -Adding random "convoys" and survivor camps.. convoys = supply filled trucks/busses in the middle of the road surrounded by zeds. -Nerf Veresnik and Kamenka military bases.. Remove the barracks. 4 Barracks and 3 barracks = more than NWAF.. Not right. NWAF is the main military installation in Chernarus. Should not be outshined by 2 small outposts. -Restrict high quality military loot to only certain buildings (Barracks) -Vehicles.. Adding vehicles means vehicles spawn and certain locations become valuable because they spawn vehicle parts (See: Palona factory from the Mod) -Once tents and other permanent storage items are in the game, restrict their spawns to Grocery stores, military installations, and deer stands. -Re-add some military tents to Stary Sobor. Once the map is more balanced, THEN you can start talking about adding more players..But for now (and since launch), it's been 90% of the server congregating in the same 2-3 areas, killing each other, while the other 10% roams the map looting up.. That's not even taking server hoppers into consideration.

You should give it a try. I strongly advise to try out servers with most basic settings and staying away from Epoch/Overwatch and any server that has extra 1000 vehicles + weapons. I hate to say that, but: SA is still under developement. It's still in Alpha state, which means that we should be testing stuff rather than expecting to have a great time.

Three things that completely ruin the DayZ experience...

The OP actually boils down to something i have to fully agree to: Mechanics against abusive playstyles ( if you want to call hopping and ghosting a playstyle at all ) need to be a high priority on the roadmap. While it's true that every player can play DayZ SA the way he wants, it is counter-productive not to do something about those people who use the game in a way that only means to destroy other players gaming experience. A group of 3 hoppers / ghosters can spoil the fun for many people who just leave for other games eventually if noone takes care about lame gaming. I've experienced this in the late days of my favourite Unreal Tournament mod ( which was in late 2012, so the game did it for 13 years ) - in the end, only the lamers were around because they could win through their exploiting of the game's mechanics. Skilled players simply left and found other games bcs they were tired that laming can beat skill in such an easy manner. At the moment the lamers outnumbered the serious players, it was like "either you lame too, or you'll loose". TL;DR: Dear dev's: Before you add vehicles, tents, a lapdance-scrollwheel-option for female characters, at least give us a sign that abusive gameplay is something you are aware of and put it as high on your list as you deem necessary. -
We (DayZ Knights) are trying to unify the people out there that are still interested in Vanilla DayZ mod. We're not saying everyone should team up, but rather we're trying to create an environment in which people can get together to join the same servers (to keep population up where they want to play) or help each other out with any install issues or problems joining servers. We've made some public channels in our TeamSpeak that people can congregate to meet up, choose a server to play on, ask questions, drum up rivalries, whatever they want. This isn't for promotion of our TS server, as we really don't care how many people hang out there, nor are we "recruiting" people, we just want to unify the scattered remains of people that want to play DayZ mod as it was originally intended: without 1,000,000 vehicles/choppers/weapons/etc. Also, we do not run a server nor do we want to promote any particular one. We figured that giving people a place to congregate might lead to higher population on the vanilla public hive servers. Our TS address is dayzknights.com . So far DayZ Overpoch Servers have Corrupt Admins/Players

Me and my group of friends have been trying to find a new server for about a week and so far I am un-satisfied. Recently we found a server we really liked, we do not play DayZ for the hardcore experience we play for the arcadey base building/raiding experience. We finally set up a hidden base in blunt rocks with two camping tents and we wanted to fill those camping tents with loot so we could sell that loot and buy a safe. So we decided to go the close by aircraft dealer. When we got there we saw a camel airplane get shot down which we thought was interesting because one of the server rules is that you cant kill a player within 500 meters of a safezone. When we got there we saw barracks, a firehouse, and a construction site. Which was good because we wanted to get loot, but we also wanted to see what we could buy at the dealer and for what price. When we got to the dealer we found an overwatch dealer which is cool because that meant we could loot the airstrip and sell it right there. It was weird thought because you could buy very expensive weapons there that I dont think should be in the game, AS50 TWS for 12 briefcases, armoured vehicles and other things, I didnt get to see what all you could buy because my friend and I got ran over by someone in an SUV, like 10 meters away from the trader. This made us furious. We went on the server and told the admins/donaters about our problem. They laughed at us and told us there is no safezone at the aircraft dealer. They said it is High risk/Reward. This means you can got there with ALOT of money (Probably achieved by donating/playing on server for 10+ hours) buy something like a merlin and get shot as you are lifting of and killed. But we werent there to buy anything because we didnt have any money we just wanted to loot and get money. This is the problem I have with all overpoch servers that are up right now. Yes i understand why this may be a good idea for most people but this means that if you want to buy something cheap like a 2 seat little bird or a mozzie just to get around you will probably get shot and killed. Because 75% of the people playing are donaters, admins, new trial admins that dont know what they are doing, people who are friends with donaters and get good gear that way, and abusive admins. All of these people who have super bases and super gear. Then the 25% are Noobs, New players, or people who are trying their hardest to hide their base and not die. On top of that most of the 75% players are on one team so they can squash the 25% like a bug at any moment. Most servers are like this and this is my problem with overpoch servers, is that Owners of the servers main priority is keeping the server up, witch doesnt bother me, but instead of fixing balancing issuses they try and make high loot areas, expensive gear that only no lifers or donaters can get, and work on their own base with their friends. And also I have rarely found a server where an admin is committed to helping players with their problems. What is also stupid is that by making it so that you can donate and get gear makes it so that people donate just for the gear, not because they care about the server and want to keep it up. I think that maybe if you donated you could get some kind of cool skin on spawn not overpowered gear. Im sorry if this is very fragmented, if it has grammar issues, or if I miss-spelled something, I just needed to vent my anger about not being able to find a good honest server. -
Without a doubt start with the vanilla, it will give you the basics of the game and like you said the original "Spooky" or "desolate" feeling the game offers at its barebones state. Then if your interested and feel your starting to grow bored of the vanilla move onto Epoch, again its simple and will allow you to get used to base building and the way currency works in the game as well as that you can train your own PvP skills by carrying out missions. Then if you get bored even of that! you can go to OverPoch which is basically Epoch with a shit ton more guns loot and vehicles! the reason I say don't skip to OverPoch is because its like having a truck load of new systems and options being thrown at you all at the same time so I would just browse through the mods in that order until you get bored. Also asa side note, even within the confines of these mods (Vanilla, Epoch & Overpoch) there are loads of different configurations and heavily modded servers that build upon these so you basically have a Utopia of choice in front of you to enjoy! HOW MANY TIMES MUST IT BE SAID???? There are not a huge carpark full of shiny pristine SUVs in Epoch. Some server owners put tons of vehicles in and overstock the traders. Open private servers and you will have the exact same "100000000000000000000+ vehicles" SOME hosts add to their Epoch server.

That and the Noob Bus's (drive around the coast with a bus and pick up new spawns.... then take them to a secluded place and make them fight to the death). Also big clans got in the habit of running bait vehicles, one big bus on the main road and 3-4 Dirt bikes/ATV's off road around it. But by far best thing with vehicles was convoy supply runs. 4-5 vehicles rolling into berezino leave 2-3 guys to gaurd them then rest of the people just empty the town and load the vehicles up and move on to the next until you had hit every major town.

you do realise that the alpha was delayed multiple times before its release due to the network bubble and core architecture, and its coming up to its 8th month and very little has really been done, yet dean has already announced that the game is being moved onto a different engine? So pretty much an entire overhaul and back to the drawing board. I was so happy when the alpha was announced and was a relatively active forum goer. I also used to laugh at the war z forums as it descended into the last few fan boys desperately trying to defend the game, spewing the same line, “omg its still in alpha”, as the shitty devs churned out some terrible katan that looks like it had been plucked right out of a 1980’s he-man film to appease their last few players. Unfortunately I am seeing a lot of comparisons between that forum and this one now. The die hards are defending the game despite a very sluggish development and now an announcement they are going back to square one. In no game development, with a team of their size should it have taken this long, I have enough mates who work as developers, designers, QA, etc to know that with the team that they have it should have moved along more quickly. 8 months on and it is only starting to feel like it has 75% of the features in the mod are now in the alpha. I feel its getting more about hats and shoes than focusing on the main core game elements, like vehicles. I have very little hope that this game will ever actually get finished. Its built on a broken engine and they have only just realised it 8 months after they released it to the public as an alpha. Such potential, great idea, just not enough talent to actually see it through to fruition.

I mean, having enterable buildings doesn't magically make players less likely to be encountered. If you want to be encountering more players, advocate for the things which actually encourage mobility. Like persistent storage, vehicles, loot bias changes, significant/consequential survival needs, and more attractive high-value loot locations. Doesn't matter if a player's inside a building or next to it, that player is still there. I think 100 players will be the absolute limit. I've said it before, but Chernarus ain't that big when you've explored it all. There's only so many spots where you can hide a tent effectively, and the number of spots has shrunk dramatically from the mod (with the marked marginalization of the wilderness). And bear in mind as well, it's not just the 100 people on your server at any given time that you've got to contend with... it's the 500 or so regular visitors which move in and out that you've got to worry about. Sure, 100 players could be the maximum limit at any single moment... but that's not representative of how many players visit that server overall.

DayZ is more like Deathmatch more than anything right now. All you do is gather gear, go to a airfield get shot up, and repeat. What's the point and fun out of that? Yes, you do meet some cool people along the way but at the end it isn't worth it. DayZ is a post apocalypse game based on zombies fluttering the world around with infested people. As many players know the zombies are extremely buggy right now, and it gets quite annoying. I'm not saying get rid of the zombies but just fix the bugs and players will be a tad bit happier. Besides those points I want to list some suggestions I have for DayZ. 1. Craftable Shelters By this you can gather material and resources to build the houses. Cut down trees and collect items like wood, and craft a mini house with you and your friends. By doing this you can make a fire and literally live off the land, and instead of going to big cities and looting. 2. More Spawned Animals Animals only spawn near the east coast more than the west/mid west. I'd love it if animals were a bit more spawnable mid/west. My friends and I were going to live off the land one day, but we couldn't find any animals near the NE airfield. People may say "Of course they wouldn't spawn near the airfields." You guys can add a farm in most cities East/Mid/West to fulfil the supplements of animals for hunting. 3. Transportation Everyone thinks that vehicles should be added to the game. It'd make it A LOT better. Even though its a post apocalypse based game, that doesn't mean there shouldn't be any vehicles. Zombies don't go destroying cars on purpose. Adding a simple bicycle would make the game a lot better. DayZ right now is pretty much what I like to call it a "Running Simulator." This is true because there's no type of transportation, nothing like a bike or a motorcycle is even implemented. I know it's hard to add vehicles and get the right models, etc.. but that doesn't mean you shouldn't add them. Most people are waiting for vehicles and I think it'd be a great implement in the game. Helicopters are far in the development of the game but should be added also. 4. Friend Indicator Everyone has that one friend that says "Hey is that you?" and it gets annoying sometimes. Adding a system that includes friendly players that YOU added, should be indicated as a friend from a distance, maybe like a green circle hovering over the players head, but it may be annoying so you can toggle or toggle off the friend indicator. 5. Ghillie Suits Ghillie suits would be an amazing add to the game, it'll feel like the mod sometimes. Certain customization of the ghillie suit will change the appearance of it, smearing mudding or adding more grass/leaves to the outfit will make it more dark or even more camouflaged. But can only find this item in the Military Bases or the Helicopter crashes. 6. Friendly Trading System If a system is adding where you can not kill the person you're trading which both of you have to confirm. You will NOT be able to kill the person for atleast 5 minutes. This reduces the amount of harm done to players once they're done trading. Also in DayZ you have to drop things on the ground, but I do realize this is more realistic but it's not safe. A fresh spawn can come behind the both of you and take the things you drop. Then you shoot him and the item is ruined. So implementing this into the game would make it better (trading wise). 7. Growing Age People always talk about this subject, the more days you survive in DayZ you get to grow a beard for men. If players see some man with a beard they'd know that they lived for a long time, indicating that he might be a hero or a good shot. Also it will grow head hair and beard hair and you can have the option to trim or cut your hair using a razer blade, etc.. 8. Gaining Skills This may sound odd because of the title, but if you went out hunting and killed your pray, than you would gain skills from that. For example, if you do that in real life than you most likely will increase your skill on hunting, and using a firearm. Also for swimming, if you swam for a long distance you become faster and more agile. Adding these perks in the game would make it worth while. 9. Mythical Creature Adding a mythical creature that will hunt players down in the forest at night would be very exciting. Adding this will not be easy but it damn will make the game a lot of fun. It could be a creature that was a failed experiment in World War's and survives off the land killing cows, hogs, goats, etc.. In order to kill it, you need more than 3 people. Atleast 30 shots before you can kill it. If you do kill it you than skin the animal and get a lot of meat. I would rather have deseases and and having concequenses with being exposed to cold and rain and have working zombie hordes before vehicles get implemented because If that shit doesn't get in before cars it would just change from a running sim to a vehicle sim, and not being the survival game it was supposed to be.... :P

How active is the vanilla DayZ mod community?

if you get good pings to uk servers i highly suggest UK410 im pretty sure it is totally vanilla, the guys in there are relatively sound (in terms of global chat not getting spammed to bad by a-holes) and there is a nice mix of friendly and banditry maggits to bump into as well. i made some cool team mates in there after getting tired with standalone all the time. great server and totally vanilla. have had some great experiences on there. only warning is that blood test kits on the server seem to be bugged because of something to do with the server version they are running so to find out what blood type you are, you actually need an empty blood bag, a transfusion kit, and well over 4000 blood so as to be able to fill your bag and find out what type you have. other than that, its great. hell i even have a small little camp there if you wanted to have a meet up some time and help me expand my base coverage. I tend to like having a number of small well hidden camps in the central map so as to make vehicle part scavenging easier and stuff instead of having to risk dumping parts in the invent of a vehicle you find, i tend to find vehicles, note the location, then scavenge all the needed parts into a central camp, then go out with low quality gear equipped and all the parts to fix the vehicles and bring them back to base :P
