    Oil Barrels/Drums locations & related Q's

@Redshift, I agree, I also have tried shooting the gas tanks for fueling vehicles with no luck. Exploding gas would be a pretty scary weapon! @Dynama, When I cooked meat on them the first time, it was a little finicky. You need to be close to the barrel and highlight the top rim. At least, that's what I remember! I've only done it twice but it saved my life both times.

    Hiding Vehicles

Interesting perhaps that's why my friends and I have actually started finding vehicles on the server we play on. I had a plan to keep our big ural truck safe but my friend didn't like it. The plan involved shooting out the tires so they can't take off with it and would only be able to rob us. We would then keep four spare tires on the easy to hide atv so we could move the the truck if it's position was made

    Hiding Vehicles

I've kept some larger vehicles for upwards of two weeks untouched. My advice is to use a combination of terrain and trees to conceal a vehicle from multiple angles. Look for an area with dense pines combined with a steep down-slope. This way players above the vehicle will not see it as they look out over the slope, and players below will not see it as they look up into the trees. It creates a kind of "visual keyhole" in which players must pass within ~30m of your vehicle to spot it. Even people purposefully searching for hidden assets are unlikely to stumble on it if you're clever. Like so:

    New Server

Just FYI server is up and running without any hitches. Vehicles are still not hoarded and spawn in frequently. Server restarts @ 0200, 0800, 1400, and 2000. Good community and still growing population. Also just FYI DC from combat are banned.
  5. Uh, I did that for the first two weeks I had DayZ, I've had my share of it, Me and my friends worked hard to get the vehicles and keep them fixed and fuelled now I want to achieve getting a helicopter to make our team more effective for grabbing supplies, picking up friends, killing survivors, sometimes we had to ambush people to get their cars and it can end in a firefight

    Admin Server Tools

Using the default, or that scripts.txt, will not stop hackers. To actually kick for the most common scripts you will need to do some snooping around frequented hack forums, and add strings that cannot be redefined in a hack to your scripts.log. for example: _vehicleList = vehicles; is redefinable. you could easily block this by adding 5 = vehicles to your scripts.txt, which omits the redefinable string.

  8. Good, provides conflict. Vehicles should not be hoarded or monopolized, unless it is by sheer effort to continuously defend and reacquire them, not hiding it 15 miles off the map.

    Experimental 1.7.2.1 test patch

weird, when i start my armory, everything is missplaced, i pick riffles and there are vehicles in it etc... About the new beta patch for arma, is it not backwards compatible, all servers are red for me at the moment...?

    Hiding Vehicles

Is the only mostly safe option to drive them off the map? Atvs, motorcycles and bikes are easy to hide because you can just stick them in a bush but larger vehicles are almost impossible to hide on the map. My friends and I can never seem to keep the larger vehicles as someone always manages to find them and very quickly too if I might add. We hide them in low traffic area's far away from the coast and lucrative loot locations.
  11. as of now, day z only has two real dynamics- the players and the zombies. and at this point the zeds are being looked upon only as an obstacle to maneuver around, a nuisance easily dealt with if people group up. weather the group is large or small, their survivability rises considerably. when two groups butt heads, it becomes nothing more than a big team-deathmatch....with a few walkers here and there. lets face facts, the players have adapted and theyve adapted quite well. theyve hoarded weaponry, rebuilt helis and land vehicles, some even wantonly just hunt other players. the zombies have become nothing more than background scenery in a game where they should be the main concern. because of this, i highly encourage another aspect to join the game, that of the roving military and zombie hordes. survivor/bandit camps can easily avoid most confrontation just by tenting up in the woods or holding up in some building. this is smart gameplay no matter how you slice it, it doesnt matter if theyre out to kill other players or just rampage thru zombies to grab the loot. the mechanics in the game are there for them to operate with. but when a new type of menace enters the fray, what next? imagine the bandit camp huddling together knowing that a large zombie horde has them surrounded and are getting closer? or a military clean up patrolling the area? maybe have a limited time with which they can assemble their gear etc until they either split or be threatened with zombie/military mania. the same goes for the lone wolves, stop in one place for too long and its a certainty SOMETHING is gonna happen. NO im not saying ALL the time but it should be of concern to all players alike. maybe bombing runs to move people along...in order for the game not to stagnate quickly, which is what is rapidly happening. its in alpha, so this is time to at least try it out, i think it could work wonders. why not at spawn have the player decide if he wants to be a random survivor or JOIN the military squad? in joining up with the army, that player has NO other contact with other players. just his NPC group. this might eliminate clans becoming heavily armed soldiers destroying everything in their path. and maybe the friendly fire for these squads are turned off, so as the particular player doesnt fight the soldiers from within their ranks. and the army has to be VERY deadly. if a group wants a clash, they better be ready for a long day ahead. helicopter fly overs and bombing runs could scatter players even further. instead of cherno and elektro steadily being a slower version of counterstrike, the jets overhead dropping payloads will have people scrambling for cover or just simply leaving the place altogether. of course im not suggesting continuous bombing but SOMETHING has to keep people moving along. im sure these suggestions have been more in depth before but i just dont see this game progressing much further if something else isnt added in. flame on...
  12. This is dumb on so many levels. 1. Short term storage. 2. Being robbed is not a reason to not add something to the game. Tents and vehicles get robbed all the time already. This is normal. 3. Boats aren't even hard to hide. People don't usaully swim to islands, and the ocean goes off the map too.
  13. I'm really tired of you posting the same shit in every single post you make. It's a tired, terrible arguement that could be seen through by your 85 IQ child. (Unless your wife is a genius, which I highly doubt.) I'll deal with your empty advice line by line. "If you want to penalize someone for shooting at you, return fire. Don't run crying to the designer and ask him to fight your battles for you. Man up and get it done." In a game with sniper rifles and semi-realistic bullet damage, the aggressor is overwhelmingly successful. If the person who shoots first has any skill, they won't reveal themselves until they're assured of the kill. If you have time to fire back, it means the other person was a scrub. Not valuable except against noobie bandits who mostly sit at the coast where their sniper is only up against noobies with maks and loud enfields. This advice is terrible, stop giving it. "The game is not a "deathmatch." No deathmatch game permits survival for an hour let alone 40 days." Classic strawman arguement. No deathmatch game has anywhere near this large a map, and the reason is that it would last just as long. Trite, and worthless point. "If it feels like a deathmatch to you, it's likely because you're standing in the wrong sorts of places. My suggestion: move. If it still feels like a deathmatch, keep moving." Around 80% of the server's best loot is in 3 locations. If you decide you don't need good gear, just food, water, and hunting supplies, your ability to survive is nearly limitless. Stick to worthless areas of the map, and be bored out of your mind, because there is nothing to do if you decide you just want to live. No challenge, just tedium. Why play that game when you can just stare at a wall in real life? There are two major types of players: 1) Those trying to get end-game loot but haven't learned how to do it effectively yet without getting killed. 2) Those who have gotten end-game loot and now realize they have nothing to do, so they just kill other players for fun. "We're only in alpha and yet you have every tool at your disposal to create a survivor haven already. Start a clan - advertise the server you are on and the services you provide. Tell people to approach unarmed or face consequences. Dole out medical supplies, food, water and transportation to needy survivors. Defend them against bandits. You can do all of this already, you're just too lazy to do it so you want the designer to come along and build a bunch of unecessary UI and blinking lights and colored buttons and arrows pointing "Go here!"" You can get a group of people together, but you can't actually build a goddamn thing. You can't clear an area of zeds. Tent forests will get looted because there's no one to watch it, and you don't need a tent full of loot for anything except staring at a tree and eating/drinking when an indicator starts blinking. You can rebuild vehicles, but for what purpose? You can't take a helicopter off the map and escape the infected areas, which would be a win scenario if this was a single player game. There are no islands that have things of value on them, and it's safer just to walk or run everywhere else, and a whole lot less work than fixing a car or a truck. You could make them to have them, but it's an expenditure of time and effort for no real benefit. "If you want something to happen, make it happen. If you want something to stop, put a stop to it. Stop asking the designer to do your work for you, you lazy, slack-jawed ne'er-do-wells." I want the game to have less mindless PvP. So do members of the community. I pictured a game that was similar to UO in the wilderness, where you had to keep your eye on blues who might turn on you or steal from you, but spontaneous teamwork, which is human nature, would be supported. Day Z artificially punishes the natural tendency to team up by having everyone look exactly the same (no ability to recognize friends vs foes from far off), having NO specialization, removing as much interdependency as possible, and making the only plentiful resource be weapons. It's a game that is far more realistic in encouraging killing others, going out of it's way to make working togather difficult. The ONLY person with the ability to cause real change in that area is rocket, and he either doesn't know how to, or doesn't want to. Shooting on sight is the best, easiest, and most rewarding personal strategy. High-tier gear is easy to get to, and there is nothing in this game besides gear acquisition. Player interaction unless you form a clan is overwhelmingly negative, and zombies are ignorable at best and simply irritating at worst. Individual players can't affect that this game has become a deathmatch on a massive map. Cooperation is a losing strategy because real life aspects of cooperation aren't supported, and nothing of value can be gotten through cooperation. There is no worthwhile endevor that requires multiple people, you can't customize your character at all, so it's really easy to kill allies who can only be found and worked with due to teamspeak/skype, which are external programs. I, like many other players, have played the game extensively for a few weeks before realizing how incredibly empty it is once you look at a loot map and at the game mechanics. You're 100% wrong when you say this game isn't a free-for-all deathmatch. The map is bigger and gearing up is more difficult at first because of the learning curve, but that's all it is currently. There's nothing else to do. Survival is easy and boring if you're not trying to get top tier loot. Top tier loot is only useful for either getting more top tier loot and killing players. This game has potential, which is why I keep an eye on it. But currently with everything mechanically stacked towards deathmatch, that's all it's going to be. Telling people it's not or that they can change it is is either wrong (if you're not smart enough to see it for what it is) or a lie. Stop Ctrl + V'ing your same terrible advice in every single "this mindless PvP sucks" thread. You make a lot of really great points here, and I've had many of the same thoughts regarding game theory. Bandit skins were poorly implimented, but that's because dying reset the skin, instead of tying it to the account, like UO did. Death isn't any more meaningful in Day Z than it was in UO, in fact, it's even easier to get high-tier gear. rocket clearly had no idea how to impliment bandit skins effectively, and because he did so poorly, and then removed them, made things even worse. For this game to not be a deathmatch, there needs to be 1) Rewarding goals that can only be achieved via cooperation. -Completely missing 2) Character customization so it's easier to tell friend from foe (this is a problem stone age people solved) -Completely missing, and ghillie suits are common enough that it wouldn't matter. 3) More end-game things to do. Zombies are completely static enemies unless they do something surprising due to a bug. Gear can be gotten in an hour. Food and water are plentiful. Vehicles, which take a lot of time to get repaired and fueled, are easy to destroy and don't really provide any benefit other than storage.

    I'm Now a Deathmatch Player

I keep seeing this idea that there is a magic bullet to the problem and just to let you know I am not a kill on sight player but I will murder a player who deserves to be murdered. Like most of those who complain about the player kills you do not offer a single specific solution to the problem yet seem to think it will magically appear. I would be very against punishment for player kills and I am very against any sort of safe area on the map. If you have a gun that shoots then you should be able to shoot anything that pops into sight including other players. Should you? Who knows I am not into insulting other playing styles except dirty dirty snipers at the airfield (kind of joking). I could see more incentives to grouping up, but that will never remove the threat of some jerk who just wants to shoot someone else for the lulz. Hopefully I was not too big of jerk in that response because I do agree that more people should look for cooperation and not let the few bad apples ruin the game for you. Most players are unaware of how many people have truly seen them and done nothing, I see people in fields and towns all the time that I could probably take out but make the choice to leave them be on their individual adventure. If I am in a group and we stumble across another well armed group that is a different story. I will murder that group every chance I get because they are the competition for vehicles and high level gear. Same with established camp grounds, that shit is gone if you do not have a couple sentries. Might sound messed up but I feel that is realism in this game, as a sole survivor you will seek out a group, but once part of the group you will be deeply distrustful of other armed groups and get into conflicts with these groups.

    Are tents currently bugged?

I've been seeing tents and vehicles disappearing but coming back upon server restart.

    Are tents currently bugged?

We run into this problem a lot of my server... We restart the server every 8-12 hours or so and almost always after the first restart all of our vehicles and tents disappear, but we have found that another restart after the first always fixes this problem, wIth the exception of tents. We have noticed the frequency of tents eating everything in them go up drastically in the last patch. So we have resorted to using our V3S and/or URAL as a mobile bank. Got to love them 50 wep/tool slots and 200 misc slots, heh.
  17. Worked over 16 hours on the 2.0 version today. It's all done except for the guides. I'm having some trouble with them as I intend to make the app multilingual. Therefore I got to have all guide data such as weapons and vehicles in XML files. I think there's some 16 hours left to do so there's no way I can be done 4pm tomorrow. But I promise it's ready this weekend before monday EST :) Now I got to go to sleep. You really have something to wait for.

    Are tents currently bugged?

Vehicles can also dupe items as well for some reason. Saw it with 1.7.2.
  19. I appreciate your response, however if you even cared to check your server logs, you'll find that we play on your server quite often. And no, we're not hopping. We logged out in the airfield, and logged in the next day. If that makes us hoppers, I guess we are. Don't make this out to be more than it is. I killed your buddy who was loot whoring, and you kicked all of us. That's fine, but to justify the kick with a sorry excuse of 'protecting us' is laughable. Not only that, but instead of taking his death as a man, he alt-F4'd, as most of your guys do. "...when we noticed you we kicked you..." Regardless of your troubleshooting and/or issues with the server stability, kicking us ALL after I kill one of your clan mates and then locking your server under the guise of 'issues' is a fabrication. Not that it matters though. We're done with your bullshit. Keep restarting your server to get your vehicles back, keep kicking people who put up a fight. I'm guessing that's why you have MAYBE 5 other people who play there.

    Are tents currently bugged?

Experienced the same, the tents randomly duplicate items too. Vehicles that have been saved sometimes disappear and spawn at the point where you picked it up...
  21. While I admit the OP's idea is rather silly. Your assertion of Dayz's "realisticness" is just as silly. As I have stated in another thread, killing in real life takes balls. There's a reason why many soldiers get PTSD and not everyone can become crime scene cleaners or ER trauma unit doctors. Probably more than half of people here can't even handle a lot of things you see in those professions without throwing up. In DayZ, killing is hardly a big deal, it's merely kiling some group of pixels that happen to resemble humans. In real life, you can't survive alone indefinitely. Eventually, you need someone to replenish those supplies. Things won't just magically "spawn in". Why do you think the human race got to where it is now? You need people with various expertise to do things for us (generate electricity, construct buildings, manufacture weapons, vehicles, etc.). Humans, by nature, are very social creatures. The world would be a lot more different if real life is as "realistic" as DayZ like you said. In fact, early human race was probably just as DayZ is, except instead of zombies, you have the weather elements and wild animals as threat. Occassionally, there's probably hostile people, but eventually, people banded together cause you realize all the benefits and security you get from being "friendly" with each other far outweigh just senselessly killing each other for no good reason. And that's how civilizations evolved to how we are today. Even a lot of animal species exhibit this concept and travel in packs. It's simply a built-in feature of our genes. Sorry, I don't buy your argument of DayZ realisticness. Try again.
  22. Most people know who the yogscast are. Couple of british dudes essentially famous for their minecraft videos. Well recently they started a dayZ series. Cool stuff! This should introduce a lot of new people to dayZ! What ISN'T cool is how they are going about their series. Playing like idiots and only living because of a geared-to-hell guardian angel with spawned in gear? Mocking the controls calling them "retarded" because of their own shortcomings? Spawning in several vehicles? Playing on a locked server with only 7 people? Is that really the message you want to send to a prospective new day z player? What kind of deal did you guys make with the yogscast? Why let them play on a private server and spawn in gear and let them call THAT actually playing dayZ if you already had 450,000 people that had played the game? Its not like you needed the publicity. The rocket/totalbiscuit interview was WAY better than this series is turning out to be. Heres a link to the first video for those that haven't seen the series.

    Vehicles

Found/stolen tons of vehicles ... never been sniped or had anyone try to get it back while we took it. The odds are prolly in your favor.
  24. No vehicles get destroyed atm. They might blow up but they will come back magicaly on a server restart where they blew up fully working again. Nothing is respawning atm. Also if u hit a tree and shit goes red but doesnt blow up you can get out and get back in and the vehicle will magically repair itself. Many reasons why most people dont see any vehicles for weeks/months. That and the fact clans still stash every vehicle on the server in an off map location sometimes 300 km/s off the map, good luck finding those. Lots more pressing matters to fix other than those mentioned above, get used to running everywhere.
  25. Okay? So does that mean they're not on the server? You're better off finding vehicles that are in other player's hands anyway. They will be repaired for you and often packed full of amazing loot. Hardly something to bitch about... Also, 99% is a silly exaggeration. I've never been on a server where I coudn't find at least one vehicle at its original spawn location. Search harder.
