  1. YES Or, with a gun and without food and water or something. Starting gear feels a bit too plentiful as it is.

    Life is not valuable now?

I agree, that the game would be MUCH more realistic if ALL weapons were extremely rare. Think about it. In a town like Electro, thinking about a real life situation, you could maybe find a couple of pistols and a winchester if you're lucky, assuming you searched every house in the entire town. Everything valuable would have been taken away by other survivors when the zombie virus first started. I think the big towns at the coast shouldn't even spawn any good weapons. Only some pistols and an occasional winchester or something. And ammo should be very rare too, so you should ACTUALLY think about whether to shoot at ANYTHING. The current system tries to make you think about shooting, but ammo is actually so common, you can just shoot everything to hell and back. I think it would be cool if you had to go very far north to find any good weapons. It currently seems like there is no reason to go north at all except to get to the airfield.

    Temperature Suggestions

Pretty awesome ideas. Maybe your characters' hands would start to shake in cold temperature, making aiming harder. This could be countered by wearing gloves or something.

    Nights

Why are nights dark as FUCK? I want to point out, that the nights aren't just "dark", they really are dark_as_FUCK™. Now, I understand that if you don't really have any light source anywhere near IRL, it can get pretty damn dark. BUT NOT DARK_AS_FUCK™. I mean, the nights in this game are so goddamn dark it isn't really realistic in any way. The only way you could get a night as dark as that, would be if the Moon wasn't up and there would be lots of clouds blocking the whole sky. The nights in ARMA are like everything suddenly stops reflecting light completely. You look at your feet and you see nothing but complete darkness. It's like the sun is the only natural object in the game that counts as a light source. It seems that the night sky emits absolutely zero light. This is both unrealistic, and incredibly annoying. I'm personally not familiar with modding, so I don't really know if this is even the place to complain about this, since it seems like a flaw of the game and not this mod but nonetheless, I sincerely hope you guys could do something about it because it's night 50% of the time, which means the game is 50% broken. - In my opinion of course. Cheers. PS: I goddamn love this mod. Best zombie apocalypse game I've ever played. EDIT: PLEASE READ ALL POSTS IN THIS THREAD IF YOU ARE GOING TO POST. TOO MANY PEOPLE POST ABOUT STUFF, THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN DISCUSSED. YOU ARE THE RESULT OF 2 MILLION YEARS OF EVOLUTION, ACT LIKE IT.

I think it's stupid that you have to change your settings to be able to play. It really takes away the realism from the game. That's just the thing. In Arma you can't see anything even if the sky is perfectly clear and you are in a completely open field. This is just plain unrealistic. I understand it could be totally dark if it started raining during the night or if you are in the woods where the trees block most of the sky. But not in some completely open field. If some of you people still somehow think pitch black nights are realistic' date=' PLEASE read this post here: Many people have said something like this and I really hope it's true. I joined a server at about 1.00AM and I couldn't see the moon anywhere. I ran on a completely open field and at 2.00AM the moon still wasn't up and it was still completely dark. If the moon cycle really is realistic, and the nights will actually make sense, ALMOST all of my complains will be pretty useless. (Which is a good thing). It remains to be seen how much lighter the nights will become.
  7. Do you have any idea what the hardware and bandwidth requirements for a server like that would be? And then imagine if you went to Cherno and your computer had to render 500 players simultaneously. I don't think this is possible without rewriting the entire game. Just saying.

Thanks to all the people giving real-life examples. Really helps to know how things should be in the game and stuff. Morinav's post is pretty much perfect. I totally agree. Here is also a demonstration of the "personal lighting" feature, that was discussed earlier. The game SCP-087, even if it is a totally single player game, implements personal lighting beautifully to induce a frightening atmosphere and an easy way to bring light to dark areas. I think something like this would be an awesome feature for DayZ. It would make the game much less tedious to play during night time and still keep the need to use flares or chemlights.

    Holster pistol

Agree. Would be awesome and handy for friendly encounters. Though, actual handgun holsters aren't very common in a daily life environment, I think.. Maybe your character would just put the gun under his belt or in his pocket or something. Would make more sense in my opinion.

    [Suggestion] Sleep

My immediate thoughts are, that this might be realistic yes, but it wouldn't really be fun gameplay-wise. And even if this game aims to be "brutally realistic", it shouldn't be an excuse for something to be stupid. You really have 2 options: Make a game that is either enjoyable or ultra realistic. You just simply cannot have both. You cannot have an ultra realistic game without some, if not all game mechanics being bothersome and irritating. Making a realistic game is kind of a double-edged sword in that sense. I think when trying to come up with suggestion for games like this, you need to consider if it's practical or not. Your idea might be awesome and realistic in theory, but when you think about how to implement it in a game, you run into an infinite amount of problems. Sorry, most of my post became a bit off-topic. I just want people to realize, that there is only so much realism you can implement in a game and still enjoy playing it.

  12. I really like how you would be able to light your immediate surroundings for just a moment. If you've ever seen a match lit in complete darkness you know it gives a surprisingly big amount of light at the moment of lighting. Of course the actual fire doesn't really light up anything other than your hand. Your character could light the match, then immediately drop it. The spark from the ignition would produce a very quick, relatively quiet and quite bright flash just for a few seconds. Awesome idea. +1.

Okay, so Coach clearly didn't read my post where I clearly said that if the nights are indeed realistic, I don't think most people want them to be because they aren't really practical and have more bad things than good things.

Astronomy hells yea. I'm so glad that someone actually cares enough to explain all this so well. I honestly think this is a BIG issue in the game and should be fixed/made better as soon as possible, I cannot stress this enough. The game would be 50% more playable and fun if it was possible to see even a tiny bit of.. ANYTHING during night.

I just remembered a way that some games deal with really dark places. Make the player character emit a bit of "personal light". Just a tiny bit to make you able to see the area around 30-50cm of the player. This would be a nice way to implement your characters' eyes adjusting to the darkness. Obviously you wouldn't be like a walking torch or something. Other players or zombies couldn't see any light coming from you. I've seen some games implement this feature pretty well but I have absolutely no idea how hard it would be to put it in the game. I imagine it's not easy to make a light source "personal" so only you could see it.

I agree that it should be extremely dark in the woods because the trees would block almost all light coming from the sky. I also have to agree a bit with Saz, that the extremely dark night changes the gameplay, because you have to start using something to light up your surroundings. I joined a server just now, it was completely dark as expected and for the first time I REALLY tried to get around and looting a town with just my starting gear. Having to use flares is a pretty nice change from the daytime gameplay, I have to admit. You need light, but when you have it, you need darkness. As Saz said, the dark night really is a change to the gameplay. However, it's debatable if the change is good or not. I for one, would like to be able to see the line between ground and a building.

    Player Journals

This is actually pretty damn awesome. It would certainly make characters more personal, even if you'd occasionally (or frequently) find diaries that just read something along the lines of "ur a faget". Imagine, you could feel bad for bandits.

But there are stars and the Moon in the sky in the game. And the eyes adjusting to darkness thing is exactly the reason the nights are unrealistic. If the night lighting was realistic, you would at least see SOMETHING. Not just make out the silhouettes of some tall buildings and stuff. You would actually notice if there was a meter high metal pipe or something right in front of you, which you can't in the game.
