LunchBox: What was the Regulator's name? Psyl3nt: That's one of the tricky parts: you really can't. Our members have different ways of going about this: some stay hidden and use the voice chat to try and establish a connection or give them a location to go and pick up some food/medicine, some (like me) observe a guy on the rooftop and take him out if he is witnessed killing somebody else. Some avoid contact and just pop zombies that are chasing the guy. As a rule of thumb, everybody is by default considered friendly (instead of the more standard way of considering them hostile from the get-go) so the situation is at least developing towards being defused instead of escalation. -O -

Oh for sure - we're not just throwing this out here and walking away. With less hierarchy I just mean that our "leaders" will not be telling you what to do and when to do it. We'll share information and experiences and the Regional-level guys will use that information to develop the organization further (if that's what you mean by 'leadership'). We might sound like a bunch of hippies here, but we believe that the supreme authority in the Regulators is the fact that you, and you alone, decide if you want to help or hurt other people. Being a Regulator is just a way of expressing your choice to protect to the rest of the community. -O -
Law to Lawless Lands
*Regulator* Oldtribe replied to *Regulator* Oldtribe's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
All right, let's get this topic back on track...for those who don't want to read all of the 140 posts, here's the idea in a nutshell: The Regulators are a very loosely-formed "clan" of players. We have no membership requirements, no massive command structures or bases to protect. We're all individuals who have seen this game degenerate into trigger-happy mayhem (probably because it's an easy way to make your game enjoyable, albeit with a cost to other people's fun) so we've decided to pledge ourselves to patrol or areas, do our best to protect and help other players, push out player killers from the coasts and strike at bandit camps in the north. This topic is currently our introduction to the game and our main recruitment channel. If you are interested in hearing more, PM me or visit our forums at: http://regulators.fr...s.org/index.php Thanks, -O -
Law to Lawless Lands
*Regulator* Oldtribe replied to *Regulator* Oldtribe's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
People people, no need to start arguing - every play style is valid (except hacking/cheating) just as long as the player is having fun. Some players loot and scavenge for a while and get bored, so they start actively looking for firefights to keep the game interesting (and that does really pump up your adrenaline). To me, this is TOTALLY ok. We are trying to start this movement for the very same reason - we were bored, fed up or unhappy with some aspects of the game and wanted to pose ourselves a question: Can you play to protect? It is for sure very very hard, especially when the people you are trying to help start shooting at you. My style is to stay hidden and use direct chat to give instructions if I see a player who is armed, something like this: Me: Survivor! Do you need help? Are you hurt? Survivor: *run*/*start looking around*/*remain quiet* Me: Survivor. I could have killed you already, but I haven't. Do you need any assistance? Survivor: (in rare cases) "I need food/blood/water etc" Me: Ok. Switch to your secondary weapon and keep it pointed down. I will fire if you make a move. After revealing myself, I usually try to stay behind them (harder than you think) and tell them that I will leave whatever they were asking on the ground. Then I bolt and tell them it's ok. It hasn't worked more than once so far, but that was an awesome experience, my heart was racing all the time (not to mention if there were others watching us) and I felt great after that. It's easier to do with a buddy, that's why Regulators are supposed to work in teams when they are "patrolling" while lone wolves like myself observe, countersnipe and look for bandit camps mostly. Anyway...I guess what I'm trying to say is that there is no judgement here on the forums about anybody's play style and never will be from my part. If I spot you on a rooftop shooting at random people, I'll zero my rifle and pop you if I can. In that way, you'll have an amazing experience of "I shot this guy and got killed right away! WTF?" and we all come out with a smile on our faces :D -O -
Law to Lawless Lands
*Regulator* Oldtribe replied to *Regulator* Oldtribe's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Great points made - I think the short-term objective of the Regulators is aimed more at restoring people's trust in other players (that might actually be a very long term objective though) and going after the thrill killers that pop people with no reason. One part of this is definitely cleaning up the damages by helping wounded with supplies and ammo and just Being Nice to people who've not chosen to shoot everybody on sight. As far as organization goes, we're going to adopt a "no bases"-approach where individual cells of Regulators will operate very independently on their patrol areas (much like small clans already do). If they encounter something significant, like a massive bandit base, our system will help them summon a couple of extra teams to the site for a larger operation. Will it end banditry? No. Will it be fun? Hell yes! Cells will also do trading and resupply within the Regulators, so let's say your team of 4 Regulators is in deep shit and out of ammo - call for backup and we'll dispatch runners with supplies and firepower to bail you out. We're made of lone wolf type players who can scavenge basic gear in under an hour and make their way to your location. The Regulator "base" is constantly on the move and very hard to wipe out completely. On the intel collecting, I think we'll learn this by doing. Biggest concern I have is the speed the information gets relayed and how - in most cases the bandits have already disappeared when we have mustered enough forces to mount a decent strike. Because of this thing called "real life", there can't be just a single guy somewhere on alert (which is why the cell organization will be ideal for a small group like us). We'll need better intel overall - where did these guys go? If we see clan [X] always hanging around Stary on servers A, B and C, chances are we'll find at least their supply base near that area on one of the servers. Taking that out will push them back one step or at least make them bleed manpower and time if they are going to keep it guarded or moving around. Result: they're not shooting at noobs for that time and probably are enjoying the game more as well if they can feel somebody on their tails. Everybody wins (except the bandits lost their eq, but there's always more of that lying around). In the end, we're dedicated to do this to make the game more fun for us, for the people we save and (I believe) for the people we go after - it's a common cause for all players of this game to fight boredom and to make it interesting. Rocket is doing his part by developing it, it's up for us players to pitch out lot in and bring more toys to the sandbox. -O -

Wanted: Some kind of system to leave signs on the map
*Regulator* Oldtribe posted a topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
One small improvement that would make the game more fun (and easier for friendlies) would be to implement some sort of signposting system that allows you to set up a sign with a short message (100-200 chars) and save it much like a tent. There could be just one sign per player (or "spray cans" etc consumables to write messages) to avoid this getting out of hand and it could time out the same way as tents do if the poster dies. Since there is very little trust with the players currently, I'd love to be able to hide some supplies for beginner players in a shack or a tent and post a sign to direct them to it. Also, clans and bandits could use them to mark their turf with whatever terrible threats the human mind can come up with (or set up ambushes for that matter). So, how about it? Pretty please? -O -
Time for Change
*Regulator* Oldtribe replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I agree on the principle, but not on the method - let's not change the game to make it harder for players who have chosen to play in a certain way (only cheating and hacking should be punishable and prevented). There are a lot of survivor groups out there who are fed up with the PvP and have started working actively to curtail it within the game. Our group is here, but you can probably find many others by skimming through the forums: http://dayzmod.com/forum/index.php?/topic/42919-law-to-lawless-lands/ You are free to join up, no strings attached or stay independent but please - this game is a sandbox that's just showing the worst of humanity now: bored players PvPing since that's easy and pretty damn fun. Try helping out others - it's hard, you die a lot, but you'll feel pretty good about yourself when you manage to make somebody's day. -
We need a purpose.
*Regulator* Oldtribe replied to WildGunsTomcat's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I agree with many of the people here that creating your own missions is the best way to get more enjoyment out of the game, here's what we've set out to do: http://dayzmod.com/forum/index.php?%2Ftopic%2F42919-law-to-lawless-lands%2F If you don't feel like reading the whole thread, we're basically setting up a loosely-defined group who's only rule is that we're dedicated to protecting and helping people by any means possible. Our "missions" are based on emergent gameplay, meaning that we patrol multiple servers, help out people and share information between ourselves to get objectives to our daily sessions: a Regulator on server X might find a two-man team in Cherno shooting random people just for the hell of it. They might be too much for him to take out, so he hunkers down to observe and contacts a couple of others so they can team up and take it out and presto - all the Regulator players had a clear mission for today with planning, excitement and (maybe) even some rewards! (also, probably the two-man griefer team is going to have a more fun game session than their usual 'hur hur, I killed 6 guys carrying hatchets') -O -

Law to Lawless Lands
*Regulator* Oldtribe replied to *Regulator* Oldtribe's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Totally agree...bandits are the closest to organized teams in this game currently, but they (I assume) play with a more traditional FPS clan structure, meaning that they shoot at other bandits as much as they shoot at anything else. In any case, I think the bandits are a good thing, since they keep the game interesting. I think the biggest problem is the small groups who are not even interested in loot, but just shoot pointless targets because they haven't got anything better to do. These ones we might be able to counter, especially since we're not going to go about this in a clan manner at all. Gaining the trust of survivors is a hard thing, so Regulators will do well by staying in the shadows and collecting information before springing into action. We have some lone snipers joining up too, so I assume that these guys will go on hunting players like they used to, but will do so with this 'good intention' of firing only at targets that they judge to be be a menace to the game (ie not the guy with a hatchet as much as the team of three with ghillies and m24s). I would urge Regulators (and anybody wanting to join) to always think before firing - is this guy alone and is he "guilty" of griefing. Anyway, you guys know how to play :D Welcome aboard anybody who's interested! -O -

Law to Lawless Lands
*Regulator* Oldtribe replied to *Regulator* Oldtribe's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yeah I think there are numerous vigilante groups being formed all over, so we hope to be a part of that wave by casting our nets wider (and thinner) by not being a clan - if other vigilante groups are assembling/playing on a server, a Regulator might be able to join them to assist or at least give them useful information by patrolling bandit hotspots (won't hurt having a few extra sets on eyes on that server you're protecting). We're not affiliated with anything except protection, so if you need us, don't hesitate to ask for extra manpower - there is no territorial pissing contests with us, we're just here for the bad boys.
