    Canoe or Kayak?

Despite the shameless selfbump, I'm still going to submit this thread for thread title of the year.

    DayZ PC vs Console

Well Operation Flashpoint: Elite was released in 2005 and was a port of 2001's Operation Flashpoint and BI released Armed Assault a year later in 2006. So yes Elite had a full sized four year old map. :)

    DayZ PC vs Console

From Rocket's writings, I didn't get the impression, he was wholehearted excited about the industry. Guess why he ended up making DayZ as a mod for PC? The gaming industry is moving to the consoles, just like the manufacturing industry is moving to China. If you can make console games cheaper and sell them for more, then you can move money from development into advertising. It's the same mindset Rocket is up against, when we was looking for funding and an engine for DayZ. No one in the mainstream industry is willing to challenge the casual gamer, because that might lower sales. This is why normal mode is now called hardcore mode and the rest is cover mechanics, auto-aim and wallhack grade player radars. User content is also dead to the industry, why would you allow user content to compete with the content, you hold back to guarantee ore-orders or plan to sell as second week DLC. Only the 4life gamers have noticed how extremely easy games have become and how little actual content you get for your full price game. Games are so fricken easy, the only sense of achievement and replayability is artificially created. Complete the game running backwards with a bucket over your head *Ding* Shoot five enemies with a gun *Ding* Complete a level without falling asleep *Ding* Why invest in innovating gameplay, when you can hire a graphical designer to make 75 achievement thumbnails.

    DayZ PC vs Console

I only own a PC. I'd rather stop gaming, than downgrade to an inferior system or use a toy controller. I need a mouse and a keyboard.

Couple of moronic logic's that should be fixed.

It's already been mentioned it might change for the standalone, you have to understand what worked for a 2009 military simulator, might not be 110% perfect for DayZ today. Hardly anyone used double-barreled shotguns back then to stage frontal assault on a mechanized division. The way weapons were coded to ArmA's somewhat mission restricted needs, isn't perfect for DayZ's more MMO-like approach. Rocket has already stated that the way weapons are coded in the standalone, offers far more advanced options and I believe ammunition are also being looked over. Nothing wrong with your suggestions, but you could also attempt to act more contructive, rather like someone who's personally be slapped in the face, when the code was written in 2009.

    My First Day (and night)

Nice story. Just one thing to note. You said that you only spawned with one magazine. You have to realize that the guy at the gas station probably only stopped shooting and became friendly because he ran out of bullets. I'm playing as the most friendly friendlies out there, but if someone tries to kill me first, we can no longer be friends.
  9. -Hacking/exploiting minimized. -Gamma/brightness a one time only setting. -Ammunition divided into boxes of rounds and empty magazines.
  10. The great thing about ArmA is that the sound is dynamic and that the community always has been quick to release high quality sound mods. Vanilla sounds are a little rough around the edges though.

    Should i feel bad?

Easy call: Bandit. You posted in the wrong forum.
  14. I'm not sure what you should do next, but while you wait for other replies, try creating a similar thread on the BI forums: http://forums.bistudio.com/forumdisplay.php?83-ARMA-2-amp-OA-TROUBLESHOOTING
  15. Combined Operation just means ArmA 2 and ArmA 2 OA launching together. I think a new update made it so all you have to do is launch OA and the activate the expansions in the main menu/expansions. 1. Launch ArmA 2. Then shut it down. 2. Launch ArmA 2 OA and check in the expansions menu, if ArmA 2 is active.

New player about to step into the game

^^DayZcommander will make it so much easier to install/update/filter and join DayZ servers. Other than that I recommend you start out with as little knowledge as possible. - Be prepared to be confused and be prepared to unlearn what other first person shooters have learned you. - Shift or 2xShift will toggle run/walking. Z,X,C changes your stances. Look at the Ear/Eye icons on your right side of the screen and notice how walking/running, crawling/crouching and different surfaces affect those icons.

    The M24, Gentleman's Rifle

Agree. Half the fun of operating a bolt action rifle, is manipulating the bolt.

    No singleplayer

Why don't you just disable DayZ if you want single player or join an empty server?

Night Time .... lets take it seriously.

Problem is on a moonless night there's no light for your eyes to adjust to. Starlight isn't strong enough to provide enough lighting to distinguish objects on the dark side of Earth. You can use starlight if you're wearing NVGs, because NVGs enhances starlight roughly 50.000 times. If you don't have this luxury item, you'll need either the moon in the night sky to reflect light from the sun or you need bright city lights reflecting off the clouds or atmosphere, but unfortunately power plants need constant maintenance and supervision, otherwise they shut down within hours. This leaves you to rely on the moon, which isn't a static object on the sky and comes and goes as it pleases.

What the heck is the Winchester 1866?

C'mon boys,no one suggested this was an outrage, OP simply posted something interesting.

    Standalone could slip to 2013

    That's how it works.

    Standalone could slip to 2013

Man you know dick. No one can promise you a flawless game launch, not even Blizzard's Diablo 3, which were under development for years with a million dollar budget and a huge team of talented developers behind it. It seems like you've decided to destroy the expectations and turn customers away from DayZ, based on either your misunderstanding of a pretty basic concept or because you've got some axe to grind with whatever. If you know as much about the non-finished product as you know about ballistics, you might want to speak in less absolute terms. The goal is to release the standalone as stable as possible, that's why Rocket has stopped calling the build an alpha/beta and called it the foundation. You build upon a foundation and to do that you create a solid foundation. Since Rocket is charging money for the standalone, he understands that he has to attempt to release updates and a new features which are thoroughly tested. He doesn't have the same liberties as when DayZ only was a mod and still in alpha testing. Now you're a gamer, just like me and you've seen giant companies, MMOs with huge server farms, with hundreds of support staff on standby and still crumble at launch day. No amount of testing can fully prepare any developer for launch. What you're suggesting is that Rocket's aim is to beta test the standalone for the next 15 months. That's not my understanding. My understand is that the aim is to release a solid foundation and then expand upon it in the next coming year. I'm not promising the standalone will be a perfect as a diamond, but I do not support your doom and gloom perception of reality either.

What the heck is the Winchester 1866?

Wasn't the Winchester 1866 originally just a placeholder for the double barreled shotgun and could use both slugs and pellets in the early DayZ builds. I guess they tweaked it a bit through the various updates, pellets were removed, sound increased, but they probably never fully completed it.
