  1. I like to have a choice, it's more intense without side channel, but if you're traveling alone, it's quite nice to follow the discussion in side or answer if someone asks for help. I've made it a habit of always learning the name of the strangers I group up with and quickly make plans for what we do in dangerous situations or if someone died. Sometimes DayZ just breaks your heart. :)
  2. DayZ as pure death match or as pure coop is completely uninteresting. There are many other games that does DM, CTF or COOP much better, what's interesting about DayZ is that we're all forced together and have to survive with our very different motivations. Where you care little about your own life or other's, you play a role for those, like me, who cares both about staying alive and for the lives of other. The mere presence of humanity means that players become aware that they have a choice. When humanity was removed from DayZ, this awareness almost disappeared. KOS escalated and new players learned that KOS was the only way of playing DayZ. Without bandits, everyone became bandits or simply disappeared into the wilderness. With the re-implementation of humanity, humane behavior slowly became a valid choice again and you saw more cooperation between strangers. Humanity does not affect players who only play to create chaos and death, but for everyone else, they realize there are an alternative means of survival. The skins in themselves does not guarantee your safety from deceit and murder, but the symbolic reminder, means new players are able to expand their horizon beyond the people, who shoot them on sight. It also means that the KOS players, unless they disguise themselves are prone to the same treatment that they they themselves perpetrate. To some extend the humanity system actually promotes violence, because I as a survivor will KOS any bandit on sight. I do not care whether you're a mass murderer or you undeservedly lost humanity in self defense, if I catch you in a populated area with a face mask, I'll automatically execute you as humane as possibly.
  3. Swich chat/voice channels with period and comma. Open the chat box with / or - and caps lock for voice. Side channel is a left over from ArmA, this channel will be read and heard by all players on your side. The technical way the DayZ mission is set up all players are on the same side, so whenever you talk in side channel everyone on the server hears you. Since sound or noise is very important in DayZ, people get really annoyed when others use voice in side channel. You should only use text chat in side. Direct channel has limited range, so this is the primary channel if you want to use voice. People can only hear your voice and read your chat, if they are within 50-100 meters. Vehicle channel is great for communicating with other players in your car, especially if the engine is so loud, it drowns out direct channel.
  4. I think it's great that Rocket decided he wanted to offer more than bug fixing and hacking for the standalone. Because of the completely unorthodox development of DayZ, I think we have been granted unprecedented access, not only to the mod, but also to Rocket's vision, feelings and opinions. I can't remember anyone in the industry being so available and honest, both about the direction, but also about his mistakes. By some very simple mechanics, BI's engine, DayZ has created a new psychological experience in gaming, which have been such a refreshing departure from conventional wisdom by the mainstream, that people were willing to look past ArmA and DayZ's flaws, bugs and rampant hacking. DayZ has certainly lost it's novelty, my main problem isn't really with DayZ's lack of content, but that no other game out there offer a similar emotional experience. A couple of nights ago I were stalking a few players near the NE airfield at night. I could hardly see and I assume at least some of them had NVGs, I figured I couldn't win a fair fight against them and decided to try to steal their truck. When I had made my decision and getting prepared to run for the truck, my hands were shaking almost uncontrollable from an excess adrenaline. This has never happened to me in any other games, but it happens over and over in DayZ.
  5. Don't think I dropped the word psychopath in this discission, you sure it was me? The shemagh is a leftover from the original bandit skin, the German KSK desert forces. It's nothing to do with bandits being Al Qaida or Germans, it was just an useful solution for the bandit skin.

    Female character

I really don't understand why some servers disable female skins, they don't have smaller hitboxes and so what if they can't wear ghillie suits, I never wear ghillie suits anyways.
  7. You kind of lose me at towelhead, it has certain xenophobic connotations attached to it, maybe that's why you dislike it, I don't know. I don't know what you'd chose instead, a gimp mask, a old school bandit half-mask and a black-white striped shirt? Shemaghs are pretty badass, even real world highspeednodrag specialoperators has acknowledged it's sexiness. You gotta get past that towelhead issue of your's.
  8. Without humanity DayZ is just a game. And because humanity wraps a towel around your head, peaceful survivors will treat you exactly the way you treat them. Without humanity skins, all skins become the bandit skin and whatever little reason people had to not shoot each other instantly disappear. I think the humanity system is great. First of all humanity is the very essence of the post-apocalypse genre. Secondly it teaches new players that DayZ is something different, that there's an alternative to killing people on sight, that you can actually play DayZ trying to survive the end of the world with your humanity intact. Humanity also works as a reputation system in a game where serial killers and mass murderers are completely anonymous, because they and their victims aren't bound to a specific geographical location, at any given time they can simply switch to a alternate universe(server) and no one will ever know of their evil deeds. The shemagh is a minor inconvenience and it can easily be disguised with ghillie suits/camo clothing and I suspect there'll be even more disguises in the standalone. Even if you get it undeserved in self defense, simply leaving populated areas for an hour or two will regenerate enough humanity for you to lose it. Without humanity or a reputation system murderers will operate with full immunity, KOS will escalate and most of all new players will never learn that there are different ways of surviving the apocalypse. DayZ needs both good guys and bad guys to continue to be a different experience. Remember humanity was implemented for a reason and when it was removed, it was clear why in was initially implemented and humanity was reinstated. Without humanity people will forget that DayZ is more than a game and simply KOS everyone.
  9. I recall Rocket talking about making the default carry animation lowered for weapons, I was thinking about adding functionality to it, so you'd have a practical reason to lowering your rifle and threat level. Every armed person you come across is by default always pointing his weapon at you face, just by looking in your direction, which also means he's only one mouse click away from murder. Similar to when people realize the effects their actions have on humanity, which force them to evaluate the pros and cons of the situation, rather than instinctually killing everybody they come like other games have taught them. If weapon stances have a practical effect, anyone raising his weapon, would then clearly indicate an increased threat. People would still be able to kill each other on sight, but by changing default animations to lowered you might affect the player culture to being less confrontal, unless you clearly want to appear threatening to other survivors. Running with a weapon weapon shouldered, a handgun holstered and simply being unarmed would cost less stamina. So if you survived the initial contact you'd be able to sprint faster and longer, if your hands aren't restricted by holding a weapon. The pursuing bandit would have to make a decision to give pursuit with his heavy weapon in hand or shoulder it to keep up. This could benefit unarmed, newly spawned, but only if they spot the bandit first or he misses his first shot. Since they are reworking inventory, weight system and able to change and modify weapon properties. How about losing stamina for holding a weapon raised, similar to the hold breath function, but obviously much slower. I think hold breath begins to affect your accuracy after 2-3 seconds, maybe a raised weapon would affected accuracy after 30-60 seconds. It could vary depending on the stance and the weapons size/weight. Resting on the ground would eliminate all stamina loss. Standing, a MP5 might not be affected for 60 seconds, while standing with an M107 outstreched would be severely affected only after 10-20 seconds. You'd be able to find different kinds of slings, from regular over the shoulder slings and more tactical ones, where you the rifle is resting on your chest ready to rock. I think there's already an animation for tactical slings, when a standing model switches from rifle to binoculars. Slings would have different properties, tactical slings would be faster to get into a firing position than regulars and maybe extend your ability to steady your aim for longer. Slings would also be a part of the threat assessment, an assault rifle in a tactical sling or a hard stance would be able to bring his sight on target within a second, while you'd relax a bit when coming across a guy with a double-barreled slung on his shoulder. Thoughts?

So rocket, a western city eh?

Might be more dangerous than researching the Greek island Limnos though. I guess the downtown are could be quarantined by barricades and maybe by the time they begin design, they've also begun coding instances, making the rural areas or suburban neighborhoods a separate instance.
  12. There are two components to murder. The perpetrator and the victim. There's the player that either deliberately kills anyone or anything he sees, then there's the paranoid situations that escalate or the friendly encounter that develop because of greed. Whatever the reason or motivation that leads to someone pulling the trigger, the victim plays an important part in the situation too. I've meet more survivors than bandits in populated areas, who apparently conduct themselves with total disregard for their own safety and belongings. These guys I meet them everywhere, they just say "friendly" and continue looting with their backs turned away from me. Completely surrendering their lives to the whim of the people they meet. Survivors really need to stop making other people responsible for their lives and get out of the line of fire, until they've had a chance to exchange a few words to gauge the intentions of the people they meet.

    Implement a leveling system

It's already in the game. All the skills you require to master DayZ and ArmA are skills you develop as a player, not as character bonuses. You become a better shooter, because you realize that bullets have ballistics, that sometimes a bullet passes over your target and sometimes it falls short. You learn to ID the sound of a weapon fired within hearing range, what kind of weapon, it's general direction, the distance and whether or not you should be worried. You become better at navigating Chernarus, because your area knowledge expands and you become a master of map reading. You learn which locations yields the best chances for the type of loot you requires, you learn where to look for vehicles, players and their camps. You learn how to become self-reliant and become comfortable operating close to zombies and population centers. If you want progression, leveling and long term motivation, start analyzing your deaths and begin learning from your mistakes and experiences.

Which hacks did you experience so far?

Since may, I think I've been teleported around five times, come across ammo boxes on several occasions and had a ghilliesniper spawn behind me once or twice. I've come across stranded battleships and thunderdomes, but I haven't been the victim of much hacking. I saw the 1000 birds hack yesterday and switched to my prefered whitelisted server. I'm fairly loyal to the server I play on, so I never exclusively filtered the serverlist for players and only joined the server at the top of the list, which is probably the one, most hackers wants to get on, so they can perform their clown tricks for as big an audience as possible.

    Modception and DayZ copyright.

Did the ArmA modding community depart from the consensus of asking for permission from the original creator, before they used their code or made their own spin offs?

    Alpha Test Livestreams

I can't remember the names, but you can be sure as soon as the streamers joins the test servers, all DayZ news sources will make it their mission in life to draw your attention to them. I'd keep a casual eye out for These forums http://dayzdev.tumblr.com/ https://twitter.com/rocket2guns https://twitter.com/dayzdevteam and The usual suspect youtubers/twitch streamers

So rocket, a western city eh?

How about a fictional western city like the fictional Chernarus, I'd hate to play in a known city and be all concerned about all the inaccuracies. I'd like to see a city based on an European city like London or Paris. Maybe a fictional French city based on London, just to continue to piss off all us English speakers trying to pronounce the names of the neighborhood over teamspeak. A great river cutting across the city, some bridges barricaded or destroyed, leaving players to expose themselves on narrow ledges or crossing on the top level of an open London Bridgeish bridge. Maybe ladders on the tall sides on the broad river and a randomly increasing stream mechanic, that would make it more difficulty for swimmers to reach the opposite shore. I'd like to see an elevated neighborhood like the hills of Paris, business districts, a logistical transit area, a historical area, a burned out neighborhood. Instances: Sewers, underground, a single high riser instance with the top floor connected to the main map, instanced museum, mall, hospitals, police stations, royal palace, military installations below in the dungeons. Maybe the whole city is surrounded with low quality rubble instead of Chernarus' wasteland. There'd be very rare real maps and more easily available tourist maps, with some of the best loot areas covered by pictures of attractions. Compasses hard to come by by road signs more predominate. An elevated large road cutting through the city, with lost of damaged access ramps, making it difficult to get on and off and requiring great area knowledge, also making it usefull for snipers, but also creating several hundred meter passages, were traveling players would be forced to cross each others paths.

    Just saw Rocket again.

  20. You're just have to accept that the server is run by dicks and if you don't want to be poked by dicks, you should go elsewhere.

    DayZ Standalone Discussion

Because this is no longer a mod, but an actual product, will will meet different expectations from customers and reviewers. A smooth launch will do the standalone tremendous amounts of good, while we've seen what a rushed launch did in December, especially when you're asking money for your product.

What is the best DayZ map so far?

I really like Taviana, but I think it lacks finish and I have serious issues with the player skins. Gotta say Chernarus is still my preferred location.
  24. Haven't got the patience for fishing boats, but imo having the PBX is more precious than a chopper.

Why do you use 3rd person?

Well he talked about separating the hives, not sure anything is confirmed. Do you mean 1st person view or iron sights by "aiming down the sights?"
