The tourrettes part of me wants my player unit to go "I'm hungry" yelling it louder and louder as time goes by.I was thinking maybe hunger could be displayed by rare growling stomac, which starts when you go orange and increases with time. When you're starving you'l be growling often and have shaking hands. -When you're cold you teeths might start to clack at orange and then a combination of clacking/shaking. -Third maybe heavy breathing combined with periodic simulated tunnel vision in the final stage. -Heat exhaustion maybe heavy breathing, sweat streaming down your screen in final stage. I'd also love puking if you eat too much food and excessive shaking from too many sugar-drinks.

I agree with the pros and cones. I think you're much safer playing alone, however there's great entertainment value in playing with others.

I partly agree with you, as I suggested they improve on the first person experience, rather than breaking the third person experience.Yes this is your topic and no I don't not need your permission to post in it. -
October 9th is four months ago, maybe it's time to let 2012 go, where the Mayans went.

I disagree with this suggestion

The standalone needs to be much harder and more complex, otherwise we'll simply crunch the gameplay mechanics and run out of content. We already master the mod, so Rocket has to throw new challenges at us. I remember when Rocket fucked up the zombie spawns in 1.4 and instead of hotfixing it, he went "Okie dokie, let's not call this a bug, let's call it an experiment." Before 1.4 the hive had problems spawning zombies, so most deer stands would be unguarded and the general zombie population was critically low. Everyone was bored out of their minds, people committed more suicides from boredom, than from spawning at Kamenka. So when 1.4 accidentally decided to spawn hordes of zombies and spawn additional hordes, whenever you killed a single zombie or someone else triggered the spawn location, the DayZ community was initially shocked out of their minds, outraged and concerned, crying and dying and then... they adapted. AI is simply no match for humans, but while I'm confident, we'll eventually crunch whatever Rocket throw at us, DayZ has a build in failsafe and that's why DayZ succeeds and endures. It's not because gamers are unadulterated geniuses, I mean just look at side chat, but compared to us, AI will always feel binary, while we are organic. We're like water or plants growing through concrete, we'll probe and find the path of least resistance, either because we're lazy or smart. You too will overcome these the standalone's deadly mechanics... but only to be shot by a 14 yo with a anti-material rifle. -
1st/3rd Person Perspective, Immersion and Awareness.

The same way third person players accepts the flaws of third person, first person players also need to acknowledge the limitations of their preferred view setting. Operation Flashpoint, ArmA, Real Virtuality or DayZ for that matter was never intended as a pure first person shooter. Third person whether you like it or not, is a legit and integrated part of the gameplay and editable difficulty settings is a part of BI's philosophy of creating a open and flexible platform for user-content. BattleEye does not globally ban you for using third person on third person servers. It's actually acceptable to use third person on third person servers and people playing on third person servers, accept the pros and cons of third person, just like people preferring first person, accepts the pros and corns of first person. I understand that DayZ isn't synonymous with ArmA, but though out DayZ's existence third person servers have been a very popular feature of the game. Third person was not added by Rocket to appeal to COD players or to increase DayZ's popularity, third person was simply a core part of the engine and thus naturally became a part of DayZ too. DayZ or ArmA is not designed as a pure first person shooter and therefor first person view isn't mandatory, when you play DayZ or ArmA. Also because of BI's design decision, where the playable unit is more a vehicle, an actual entity, a body, rather than the traditional floating camera, first person view is not without flaws. Looking over your shoulder often clips through your body, changing stances and trying to fit your body behind cover is often unintuitive and the disconnect between head as a player camera and your remaining body, often leads you to expose body parts, which easily can cause your death. Climbing ladders in first person isn't the most beautiful part of ArmA's player animations, I'm not staying Donkey Kong had better ladder climbing animations, I'm just saying they were smoother and more aesthetical. I'd rather see the carrot than the stick. Instead of attempting to dismantle third person view, I'd rather see some emphasis placed developing first person view. Maybe the standalone can benefit from some of the love character animations, such as reloading is receiving in ArmA 3. Maybe more people would embrace the immersiveness of first person, if first person was a more pleasant and smooth experience. I'm not arguing for COD floating camaras, just a bit more attention to ironing out the kinks. Maybe if first person servers saw increased activity, first person players would find less cause to join third person servers and become less occupied with our preferred way of playing DayZ. Maybe the sollution isn't to break third person, but to fix first person. -
'Trust no-one' - is that really good advice?
dallas replied to Target Practice (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I always say: "Trust in solid cover." Because the default standing animation is you pointing your weapon at what you're looking at, some people simply put a bullet through anyone looking at them. I disagree slightly with this practice, but I get the reason why. If you got two players pointing both their guns at each other's faces, someone will lose his nerve at some point. Just like in real life, anyone who points a firearm at you, is only a small mistake away from pulling that trigger, taking your life. Whether it's intended or not, anyone pointing a weapon at you are always dangerous, they are either hostile or negligent, both equally dangerous. So I try never to point my weapon at strangers or allow them to get a clear bead on me. I always add an obstacle between us, before starting a conversation. -

'Trust no-one' - is that really good advice?
dallas replied to Target Practice (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Funny how you're suppose to trust people, who tells you to trust no one. :) I'm intrigued by your definition of being almost friendly. -
Don't trust people, who says don't trust no one. To makes friends it helps being comfortable around zombies and comfortable in populated cities. Move tactically, always move along cover, always move unpredictably, always keep cover close. When you see another player, take cover to prevent misunderstandings and communicate from behind cover. When two players are pointing their guns at each other, someone at some point will get nervous and pull the trigger. Meeting friendlies is like all other aspects on DayZ, something you can improve by improving your knowledge and survival skills

Maybe for your vehicle controls, but you'll need a mouse to compete in firefights.

is dayz 100% PvP on the long term?
dallas replied to _Anubis_ (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Approach groups of people with extreme caution. One person might be paranoid and a little quick to take defensive action. Two people are not only paranoid, they are also protective of each other. The risk of someone deciding to pull the trigger increase exponentially by the number of friends they feel the need to protect. -
Why dumb down something that's beautifully complex. I quest all the time. Find 1 tent. Aid stranger with bloodbags. Find 4 Stanags. Loot NWA and live to tell about it.

Disscussion (hopefully an idea) about "non-regular" playing
dallas replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
The only way to compete with a no-lifer like me, is either to trivialize the content or an ingame marketplace, neither seems to be in the direction where DayZ is going. Just remember while, I'm killing you with my NVGs, stealing your shit, you can just turn off your game and continue dating hot girls. -
ArmA is from 2009 and I think last years damage changes was to the engine, not to the mod.
-
I'm not perfectly sure about the mechanics, but I think your peripheral are automatically sent to other players within the object loading distance, so while you might not have line of sight to the zombies in the next village, you might be able to see very tiny dots, because another player automatically sends his dots to your player unit. Part of the problem is the way ArmA's units relay information between eachother and the way character selection in the multiplayer lobby is set up. Speaking in ArmA mission editing terms, all DayZ players are on the same side(Indepentent, PMC faction), but each in their own one man group, this is why you can read everybody if the blue side channel is enabled, but no one can read you if you type in the green group channel. I've also noticed peripheral dots suffer from the same problem as shaddows do, at least with wild animals, which means they have some problems being displayed correctly on steep hillsides. Sometimes you can see the dot of a wild animal behind a hilltop.

Don't know much about the topic. The 5.56 used to deal 3-4000 damage? Why should the a L85 should do double?

Any educate person knows you need two thirds gasoline and one thirds oil, if you want your cocktail to stick and burn longer. -
The problem is it makes it very easy to scan for player activity.

Will There Be 1st/3rd Person Only Server's In The Standalone?
dallas replied to The stromling's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I hope BI's reasonable approach will continue into the standalone, although it seems like Rocket disagrees with it and wants to place limitations on the ability to switch between first and third person on the fly with a key stroke. I'm perfectly okay with admins being able to enforce minimum difficulty settings, I just don't think we need to place obstacles the other way around. It's never been illegit to switch between 1st and 3rd person and I really don't see the need to place obstacles for third person servers now. -
The Reason your a Hero/Bandit?
dallas replied to Raider (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I'm a hero because I'm a people pleaser. Plus not allowing yourself to fire the first shot is a rush. -
Like an old comfortable chair. In a hard and unforgiving way.

You still can, although moonless nights are still pitch black. Slower falling flares would be nice too.

What time period is dayz based in?
dallas replied to Whatsausername's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Probably 2009, however some geographical areas(non-Scandinavian countries) are twenty-thirty years behind. [ ] This post was slightly offensive, just a bit. [ ] This post was outright extremely offensive. [ ] I'm Scandinavian and I approve of this message. -
The biggest problem so far is that nights aren't an uniform experience, by exploiting gamma/brightness you can create your own black/white NVGs if there's just the slightest hint of moonlight. I wouldn't mind headlamps, almost as rare as NVGs or a handgun/flashlight shooting stance, however I still think sprinting with a flashlight, should work as it currently does, except for headlamps obviously. Maybe you could also combine a woodpile with some cloth and gas to create your own burning torch. But a firm two-handed grip on a G17 with an flashlight attachment, should be more stable and accurate than dual wielding a handgun and a flashlight/torch. I'm also looking forward to battery life getting implemented.
