I had a group leader on an exercise start running in such a night, he ran straight into a pyramid wall consisting of three rolls of NATO barbwire. We freed him using the blue light from a G-shock watch. We also patrolled a forrest in similar light conditions, could see the person next to you and then we had a contact and started firing. The trees and surroundings lit up like stroboscope by the muzzle flashes. Probably one of the most memorable things I've experienced, if I hadn't hadn't fallen waste deep into a stream 30 minutes later.

Very happy with the M4, three guys jumped me with a Mosin, .357 and SKS. Having put 30 rounds in the two first, meant I didn't have to worry about them getting up or being able to recover anything from their corpses. Last guy wised up and ran away.

Anyone else think DayZ should switch engines?

It's from early September 2012. So this is from the period before Rocket decided to postpone the release and make major changes to the engine. The Standalone was originally intended to be a slightly undated version of the mod, because everyone, except a few badasses, thought WarZ was a serious competitor. However as they worked towards the December release, they decided that the engine needed to be more than a branch of Take on Helicopters and Operation Arrowhead and as WarZ was revealed to be a complete joke, it made perfect sense to rebuild the engine for the Standalone. This wont be a very different engine in the future, this is indeed already a very different engine. Just because Chernarus still looks like Chernarus, the code below Chernarus is now more near an MMO, than a milsim. You gotta remember, that a lot of people, who worked on ArmA 3 also work on the standalone iteration of the engine. For a long time, it really made no sense to talk in about the standalone as ArmA 2 and a half, Take On Helicopter or ArmA 3. Today the standalone engine is simply the standalone engine. -
Darkness depends on the time of the day, the day of the month and the month of the year. When the sun sets and rises. When the moon appear. Whether the moon is full or new. Whether the sky is overcast or not.

My best experience is from the mod, when a group of us visited Solnichniy at night. Most of us carried chemlights and lots of flares, so we'd light every part of the town. At some point we spotted a player with a bandit skin, who ran around like a headless chicken caught in the 10 road flares we threw at him, until we got him. No gamma, no NVGs, just flashlights, chemlights and road flares.

DayZ is actually quite clever and so am I, because I understand why. -
If you join a server and discover you can't load your gear on a server. You probably can't save your gear, if you stay and play on that server.
-
No, people gamma exploit because they can.

I really miss them in SA. I used flares to light to an urban area, I'd drop four or five, throw them far and just use the light from a far to see the silhouettes of the buildings, while the light would draw the zombies away. I'd the move in with a green chemlight to light up the ground, I was searching and then get the hell out of there in 2-3 minutes. If I encountered player activity, I'd drop the chemlight and head for the nearest treeline.

With light pollution. Without light pollution. See the difference? Unmonitored power plants shut down, maybe as fast as within hours or a day. The moon: Is not a static object in the sky. It sets and rises like the sun and depending on the calendar, it's surface is sometimes blocked by Earth's shadow. The moon doesn't actually glow, it reflects light from the closest star(The Sun). This star's light is very bight and close, it's light takes 8 minutes to travel to Earth. The stars: The second closest star's(Alpha Centauri) light takes more than four years to reach Earth, so at night without a moon or without light pollution, you actually need a night vision device, that enhances star light by 15,000-30,000 times, to use star light to distinguish objects on Earth's shadow side.

Just wondered, why you thought Rocket going to Everest was your business. because at that point, all he'd ever released was a free mod for an old game. Just don't understand, how you could take offense of that, unless you thought playing a free mod entitled you to some special consideration and then you proceed to speak your mind on some halfassed hearsay assumptions about Rocket abandoning DayZ. Just personally think that you shouldn't make certain statements about Rocket's leadership skills, when you don't actually have a clue of what you're talking about. You're done alright. -

Yeah, but with all the major changes to the client/server side structure, talking in terms of Take on Helicoters and ArmA 2 or 2.5 is obsolete or inaccurate. When using these terms, you're still using the terms from August 2012, when the plan was to simply sell the mod as a standalone title without any changes to the engine. -

No. That was the terminology used in August 2012, when we still thought the standalone would simply be the mod packaged as a standalone title. In the coming months as work commenced and WarZ self-destructed in late December, they then started all over making major changes to the engine. or as Jimmy just said: -

Big fan of OFP/ArmA's unique virtual crosshair. But whether you use sights, scope or UI crosshair, you always have to consider your weapons probabilities, zeroing and distance to target. Little sad to see ArmA 3 embrace the standard Counter Strike crosshair. -
