Thank you.

Military spawns are highly competitive areas, I'm not saying you were justified, but sometimes it's better to feel bad, than to be dead. I think you should congratulate yourself on being alive, but also that you're able to feel guilt and remorse, simply from playing a game. I think it's a testament to DayZ's advanced psychological gameplay, that you can actually be so nervous, you kill another player and that you can feel bad about it afterwards. As I see it, you have two paths to go from here, you can either shrug it off as "just a game" and become a cold cynical killer or you can accept it as part of the game and continue to balance the difficult road of trying to be a good guy, while also doing everything you can to survive and protect yourself from dangers and strangers.

A very short, but memorable moment. I had just spawned on the beach and found a bat in one of the the first houses I searched. When I exited the next house, I passed another player, but continued running. I put some distance to the house and noticed the guy following me with his fists raised. I turned around and raised my bat and shouted: "So you wanna fight?! You wanna fight?!" He lowered his fists and said: "No!" Me, still high on adrenaline, still shouting: "Don't you raise your fists at me!!!" Obviously I overreacted, but I felt protective of my bat and was a bit amused, how angry I actually got, just from seeing his raised fists. I don't know if I scared him off or he just ran way thinking: "What an angry person."

I Think I'm Too Trusting And Nice.

Don't rely blindly on strangers for your survival. Always keep an eye open and a way out. When you became worried, you should have trusted your instincts and left them. If they had followed you, you should have killed them. -
This clownery is catching on, I goddamn told you so, but you guys thought it was so cute and now they are taking over!

We NEED some way to identify heros and bandits.

You can scout out Elektro or patrol the woods on the south-east coast. Bandits and murderers are usually very easy to spot, because they are usually the guys killing all the unarmed people. In DayZ the only rules is what you, yourself are able to justify. If someone threatens you, you're justified. If someone kills a helpless survivor, you're justified. If someone has gear you want, you're justified. -
Several things I could comment on, but you kind of lost me on the server hopping, that shit's not right.

A "PvE only" server is a PvP server with a misleading name.

What Alpha Is Supposed To Be (A Discussion On Dev Direction And If The Game Will Ever Be Completed)

Yeah and we played hundreds of hours in the DayZ mod and we had a riot playing it through out it's development. BI games are always a work in progress. This isn't about the end result, this is about the journey. If you only care about the end station, you got on the wrong train. -

I've been a firm believer and defender of the humanity skins, but I'm kind of divorcing myself from the humanity system. We don't need black hats for the bad guys and white hats for the good guys. We just need to keep our guard up and look at player behavior, rather than what they say. If someone says: "Friendly" while pointing a rifle at your head, black hat or white hat, he'll always only be a click away from killing you. If someone keeps a respectful distance to you and places his axe on his shoulder or lowers his fists, it's an indication of something less threatening. Still no matter what, you always have to be alert and ready to move. -
Zombies Spotting You From A Distance.

If the infected can perform an as complex tasks as running is, they have to have decent eye sight too. -
It kind of offends the core concept of DayZ. DayZ goes against the industry consensus of catering to the dumbest and most casual gamers, dumbing down gameplay so much, that a 5 year old can play it without getting upset, while people, who enjoy being challenged and surprised by the unpredictable are left bored and unchallenged, because the marketing department has veto to everything that scares away casual gamers and sales. It affects me, because I see DayZ as an MMO and if suddenly half the servers, starts selling sniper starter kits for server donations, every second server you join will have 500 functional vehicles and every civilian house spawns top tier weapons, then pretty soon, casuals will have turned DayZ into teamfortress, where you're able to spawn right inside Balota and DayZ is reduced to a 200m2 death match arena. I'm sure there'll come a time, where carebears are allowed to kick players from their servers, if they get killed and lose the gear, they've so easily acquired, but why the hell would we want to rush this?

The only thing positive I can say is that's he's not Rhino.

DayZ is your own experience, but you're telling people they aren't allowed to rob or kill you, because your personal story is about friendship, free trade and rainbows? DayZ is a story about survival, hardship and close encounters. DayZ is also a story about random acts of kindness and friendly encounters, but these are only so profoundly felt, because two estranged players risk everything they have to trust each other, in a hostile and ruthless environment. If you disable PvE there's no emotional depths to the friendly interactions between strangers in DayZ. There's just two dudes standing around, weighted down by their backpacks full of the best gear with nothing to use it for. As for private servers, I'm sure they'll come at some point and then you'll be able to disable PvP and allow everyone to spawn with fully kitted M4s and hundreds of rounds of ammo and then they can go around killing all the zombies from a safe 500 meter distance and really feel like they are actors in the Hollywood version of "The Road" where the good guys always win and never have to worry about hardship. Right now DayZ is working as an MMO as intended and if you want to rent a server, you gotta keep it public and help accommodate and maintain the MMO aspect of DayZ. I'm sure at some point, you'll be able to limit your survival experience to friends and family, where you know everyone in your little personal zombie holocaust is your best friends, on your teamspeak channel and play in harmony, with socialized healthcare for zombies and mankind and crimerates at zero percent, just like Rocket intended DayZ to be...

What Alpha Is Supposed To Be (A Discussion On Dev Direction And If The Game Will Ever Be Completed)

What I loved most about the mod and what I looked most forward to in the Standalone. After a few weeks, where the zombies didn't spawn correctly, Rocket released a zombie patch, increasing the spawn rates(1.3?) and the zombie spawns went crazy in the mod. Each spawn zone would just continue to spawn zombies and players were getting overrun and killed. The forums were filled with tears and burning bras all afternoon and then players simply started adapting to the new situation and overcome the crazy waves of zombies. Loved it. -
Not as long as all servers are connected to Hive. If you allowed PvE server, you'd basically allow rent2win, people looting in safety and then switching to PvP servers with full gear advantage. Maybe when private servers become available, then maybe you can rent your own little private loot fest.

Pure terror, followed by complete relief.

omg I can't believe it's hard to find food in this post-apocalyptic zombie extravaganza!!!

I think actions speak louder than words or appearance. People, who lower their weapon/fists or even carry their weapons on their shoulders, people keeping their distance is a good indication. But you can never know for sure, so even if you're approached in a non-threatening manner, you still have to watch out. I think that's the main reason, why friendly encounters in DayZ are so profound, because you have to place your trust in someone else's hands and despite that, there will always be a hint of paranoia in the back for your head. Having said that, I like people using civilian clothing, because good taste and a little effort goes a long way at the end of the world.

I might be friendly, but that outfit is a crime against humanity and I will KOS on sight. Seriously, lose those clown pants.

And what are you going to do on a PvE server? Hand out numbers and make sure people keep their place in line, while they wait for their turn to loot a military base? See, you can't play as a friendly, if PvE is enforced, because there's no friendlies, if there's no bandits. There's just people going around asking: "Do you need anything?" and other people answering: "Maybe a few bandits, because I'm bored to death."
