I dislike this the idea of artificial skills that you can simply grind to improve. I prefer it the way it is, where skills is something the player acquire, not the character, where skills are tied to knowledge about game mechanics.

Friendly? Forget that, I'd rather beat you with a shovel

Beans for the butch voice. -
Or just switch servers. If you join a server that can't connect to the character database, you can't load your character data and then the game simply creates a new character. But since this server can't connect to the database, this new character isn't saved to the database either, if you disconect from the server right away. IF you continue playing on this server, you potentially risk that the server connects to the database and then the next time the game autosaves, you overwrite your original character. So if you log in and have lost all gear, log off and try another server. If this happens on several servers, it's probably a database issue, rather than a server issue and then you're best bet is to log off, keep an eye on these forums or twitter until the database is back online again.

Have you thought about telling a sawed-off shotgun do the talking for you? You guys noticed that you move around, if you're typing the the letter w in the ingame chatbox?

How hard can it be to code a harmonica, you character equip and then you blow into your mic?!

Moderating is like herding cats, cats on adderall, bourbon and cocaine.

Only if the devs decide to cut the M4 into two peaces, so you can separate the upper and lower receiver. If you want to store a medium sized rifle in your backpack you gotta be able to take it apart. In all my modesty, I think that's a pretty great idea.

"Realism" and a fine line between fun and it being too much.
dallas replied to Nibashe's topic in General Discussion
Adding complexity and depth to the game mechanics prolong the learning curve and separate the players willing to learn from the player willing to not. The team tries to avoid realism and aims for authenticity and it's important to make that distinction. -
I'd kill even for a placeholder sound, with Rocket going: iiiiiiiiiiiee into a mic.

It's really up to yourself to find a purpose, I mean why would any one go on living scavenging through the trash day by day for rotten fruit and tuna. Heck if DayZ came true, I might find myself standing on top of a silo near the coast in a day or two.

Is kicking players instantly from servers allowed?

What does that have to do with the rules? -
Persistent storage containers; do you like the idea or not?

Persistent storage containers; do you like the idea or not?
dallas replied to -MadTommy's topic in General Discussion
As long as people can insta-kick public players from their own servers, storage containers would the turn these servers into full fledged loot factories. I'm looking forward to learning about the design of the concept, but personally I primarily hope you'll be able to cut off other players's heads and then leave a surprise for other people in these storage boxes. -
I really want to see a solution to gamma/brightness before we even think about NVGs. Until then nights are an uneven playing field.

I really didn't want to encourage OP to continue this kind of silliness, but I had no choice to give beans.

Why the dayz formula will ultimately fail
dallas replied to randalmcdaniels's topic in General Discussion
I've played some $60 titles less than I've played the Standalone. Plus the DayZ mod revived a game I bought in 2009 and extended my playtime by 500 hours for free. Some might say I owe BI money. -

Because rules or not, the rules say I can. I bought the game, so in some sense I contributed to the Hive, which all servers are connected to. -

So although you was smart enough to see through the bullshit, you still decided to buy it? -
Why the dayz formula will ultimately fail
dallas replied to randalmcdaniels's topic in General Discussion
I think it's very bold to predict failure at this point. I mean, if the initial criteria for success was 250,000 copies sold in the first quarter, then 1,45 million sales in the first two and a half months has secured self-sustaining funding for at least a year and a half. We've got a long way to go, beta is still very far away and lots are still subject to change and tweaking. -
Once you've reported a server and know how to do it, it takes less than 300 seconds. I've even begun adding a screenshot, just to make the report look prettier.
-
If you get insta-kicked from a server, you'll get a server hopper penalty, the best way to use that time-out is to report that server.
-
Maybe we should get bows implemented first.

It's cool to be friendly. It's not cool to be easy. You're a lot easier to kill, when you're standing still, hoping that raising your hand will make you immune to damage.

What Do You Think About The Long Spawning Time ?
dallas replied to Sir Trolle's topic in General Discussion
Anything that makes it a little more annoying for combat loggers and server hoppers, is worth a little inconvenience for me.
