Depends on the server. Servers can disable/enable the feature now. To test this, drop binoculars/nvgs/backpack/rifle/inventory at the beach. Don't worry about handgun,gunbelt or toolbelt. Place one disposable item in your inventory, a can of food and swim for a minute or so. If you lose it, you will loase all of your geart after 20-23seconds, if you keep it, your gear will be safe.

What works for me: 1 place tent. 2 place 1 piece of trash inside tent. 3 wait for server restart. 4 trash is gone. 5 place gear in tent and save. Seems like tents clear after first restart after that mine are always working.

Got killed on day 32, lost chopper/dmr/m4a1SD/m9SD/gps/ngvs/coyote/can of sardines. :( I love sardines...

Combat logging to rearm seems like cheating to me.
