    How was your Day(Z)?

I think some of us need to meet up and go about things rightly. Getting sick of watching hero stories on YouTube from 8 months ago... Got TS3 server if you guys run it. Maybe it's time to put something together.

    How was your Day(Z)?

That's definitely something we can agree on! I'll pass on my steam name to you and see where it goes from there. I have a clan associated with another game and we're expanding our gaming pursuits a bit to include other games and of course DayZ is one of them. Not sure if any will come over but a group is definitely more powerful than the sum of its members- that's for sure. ZH210 spawned in a bit after I did last night. He was still up in Black Mountain from the other night and I was still near Berezino from the night before. The zombies I'd had staked out around me acting as early warning devices were gone or moved or respawned elsewhere. This was a bit of a relief to me since I've been known to spawn in only to find that I'm being mauled already. This has evidently happened to a few of us... Not sure at what point your character is visible in game during the respawn process- whether it's when the "please wait" happens or the "respawning in 59 seconds." I was a little apprehensive about sending ZH210 off on his own to find his way down to Berezino especially with the current state of the compass. "Okay, use the compass and make it so it's pointing between the S and the E. But first- check which way the lower clouds are going and also the time of day. Imagine an upside down U in the sky (all things I recently learned from pilgrim!) and place the sun appropriately to the SE or SW as necessary given the time in the server... Now take a mental snapshot of where your shadow is on the ground in relation to you and keep it there as you..." No- not quite going to happen so there was a bit of trust and lots of communication. He did quite well actually and it's a good thing since getting lost and trying to have someone else figure out where you are is... erm... difficult. I had the map open on the ipad beside me so as he was moving he gave me a description of what he was seeing and I did my best to match that up with the map. We had our radar on for matches and though he found what sounded like enough burlap sacs to make another full ghillie suit he found no matches in his travels to the south. I met up with him south of Dubrovka and while near the road decided it might be a good time for us to look for stones. It didn't give us the option near the road so we gave up on that idea and went to loot a It's easier when I'm sitting beside him and can see his screen since I can recognize certain areas and if needed I can just step over to his setup and help him confirm his directions. I can also walk him through comparing what he's seeing with the map. I think he's getting the hang of it but he hasn't quite made the connection between the map and the game environment yet. There was a small house just down the road from us so we went there in search of matches. Nothing- but while we were there I saw some rocky ground and was able to search for stones. It took me 3 or 4 tries but I did find one and was then able to hit F to "craft improvised knife." Sweet! ZH did the same. I tested the knife on some canned food and it barely spilled anything- so it's at least as good as a screwdriver / knife. It really is an awesome tool since it gives you the ability to craft so many different items and only takes one slot. From there we made our way back up to Dubrovka since he bypassed most of it on his way down to me. I noticed I'd actually started to register "hot" in the inventory menu for the first time and had a lazy eye on that. I knew I was going to need to find a body of water soon since my gorka outfit wasn't allowing me to get soaked in the intermittent rain. On our way we saw a deer out in the field so I figured I'd take a shot at it and that turned into 4 shots. Some sniper eh? Without a rangefinder it was very difficult to get a decent shot without determining ranges on the map. ZH skinned / quartered it with the improvised knife and stashed the meat. It was funny to hear him rile at the discovery of "a pile of guts" and it took me a bit of time to explain how it could be used as a rope substitute. We moved from one side of town to the other and I told ZH to go search the buildings he was facing while I was going to go to the ones behind him. He agreed and we went about our business. He was calling out everything he saw which was good and gave me some confidence that he was starting to catch on to "hidden" or hard to see loot as well as the larger obvious things. I came out of one of the houses I was searching and immediately caught movement to my left. ZH was on my right working through houses down the hill a bit further. No zombie gurgles and this figure had a drybag on. It was the shortest glimpse- but it was a person and right now people are threats, not targets. "Standby standby! We have someone over here. Get some cover and hold." "Okay. Where are you?" "I just came out of a house by a bus stop shelter." "Are they friendly?" "I can't tell- I can't hail them (mic on laptop broken)... and you're too far away." I ducked down behind the bus shelter and tried to use 3PP to ID the player on the other side. I couldn't see him since apparently we'd seen each other and they'd sought some cover as well. I waited to be hailed over the direct chat in text or voice but nothing came. "I don't want to take my hands off my controls right now so I can't type. I'll cover you if you can get up here and try calling them on voice." "Okay- I'm going to the bus shelter." I scanned for movement as ZH made his way towards me. "Stop! This guy is moving towards me!" Yup. And this is how friendly fire happens. "Oh man! What are you doing up here!? I thought you were down there checking houses?" "I was but there was nothing down there so I came up here." "You have to tell me when you move like that." "Sorry." I'd almost shot him- AGAIN! Went through every building in Dubrovka and couldn't find matches... Kind of surprised you can't just rub sticks together to start a fire. Maybe it's coming? We only had an hour last night before "mum" was reminding him that he only had 5 more minutes so we completed in Dubrovka, killed a couple zeds and made our way to the woods. He told me he found a small pond so I went face down in that and disappeared under the water. "Can you see me right now?" He said he couldn't. Hmmm. What happens if you stay under water? I haven't had a chance to test it yet and I'm not going to with this character- but suffice to say my curiosity is aroused. Anyone?
  3. Security and loot hording are probably two things that frustrate the games intentions moreso than any two other factors- People running the risk of putting time into the game just to get whacked by a hacker, or by a group of guys who rent their own server to gather their loot unmolested and take it to the beaches in other servers create a constant imbalance. I think the wipe and continued work on the persistence and overall "loot economy" will be a refreshing step in the right direction. Granted I stepped in around .51 somewhere so I've seen nowhere near the amount of development as some of the veterans around here, but I've read a lot in the forums and it sounds like it's abuses on those two things in particular that have encouraged abuse and discouraged the casual survival enthusiast. There will always be both play styles but a balance needs to be established and I think in watching the community the devs will learn ways to adjust one side over the other until they reach what they deem is suitable given their intended model.

    Few questions [New Player]

Any helmet gives you a degree of protection that is better than a hat or boonie. Now, degrees of protection with every type of helmet... you could probably find that in the wiki but I'm told even that is pretty outdated. It would likely get you in the ballpark. VERY helpful to ward off unconsciousness with single blows to the head etc. I think there is a predictable increase in protection as you move from skateboard helmets up through to Gorka military helmets. Motorcycle helmets are probably up there in ranking since I see many people wearing them- particularly bandits but that's just me stereotyping. Thing about bandits is they know all the best things to wear. Common and effective items are easy to acquire and still work well.

    Few questions [New Player]

    1) The first one you get. I think the one with the biggest volume is the "hunters" but the favourite I think is the smerch vest with backpack. 2) Any pointed object. As you can imagine, the larger weapons make you spill more food. I have seen 2 can openers in over 100 hours of playing so grab a screwdriver until you can craft an improvised knife. Improvised rock knife only takes one slot and can do everything you need. 3) Fire Axe (1 hit) or splitting axe (2 hits)... I think those are the favourite melee weapons for that task 4) Adding clothes as soon as possible helps- warm clothing = getting warmer. Sprinting around longer distances helps too but then you will get hungry / thirsty faster. Staying inside or crafting fires can also help over time. 5) You'll dry off over time inside and I believe being near a fire will help too. Find rain gear to wear- boonie hats also help as do some other garments. 6) I was on a server with about 30 people near one of the biggest cities and didn't see anyone for 2 hours. I've been on a server with 10 people and seen 3 people in 20 minutes... it really is random. There is a "survivor concentration" thread that helps show the hotbeds of activity- most trafficked areas are Elektro, Cherno and Berezino in terms of cities and any military location on the dayzdb map can be expected to be highly contested territory.

    How was your Day(Z)?

Eh thanks Kirov! I do enjoy it- we don't have diaries to write in in game so I find this sort of therapeutic. I'm still pretty new as I mentioned so I'm still holding onto the hope that I can stay a good person and not drift to the dark side. ZH210 and I are going to meet near Berezino and probably head into the woods for awhile out of sight and practice some of these skills. As you have said there are LOADS of cattle near Berezino... mostly to the south closer to the construction site with the crane. They're always running around with Zeds chasing them. If you'll recall back awhile ago I talked about how one ran into the trees near me with zeds in tow. They subsequently veered away from their chase with the cow and came at me laying completely still in my ghillie! We generally play 3PP though I'm thinking I might start frequenting 1PP private shards. I talk a big game now as I sit here- but all the feedback I'm reading suggests that the 1PP privates are a little less trigger happy and the part of the game I'm more interested in (human reaction / interaction) is more prevalent. Not to say you don't get your hiccups but at a level that's almost necessary to help keep people on their toes. Your offer is extremely generous but I'm afraid we wouldn't be much entertainment. With that said if you had the inclination to get a public character up to Berezino I'd never refuse the company if we can get the times worked out. I'm not sure if you use TS3 or not but I do run a server for some other games and if we decide to meet up I'll send you the info. ZH210 is very young, so I'm keeping him under my wing as we play. Or at least trying to. He is a bit frustrated as well since we have been through some rough times together- offering people food and water only to get killed afterwards, being lured into the woods and shot while trying to help people light a fire... You know the stories- What does scare me a bit is that some of the stuff I'm reading about people doing to others is downright psychotic and I don't want him seeing that kind of stuff. He's always been a zombie hunter and he really enjoys it- but this game has taken a really dark avenue away from the Left 4 Dead series that we've played together in the past. That's my issue and nobody is forcing him to play- but it is definitely one major reason why I want to keep on trying to be a good guy and pulling the trigger on someone only if it's the difference between us or another innocent freshie / player being murdered and having that kind of atrocity committed.

My friend died in a really strange way

OP I have nothing new to add other than to confirm I have also had that quick desync resulting in at least one broken leg if not both. I thought I'd been shot by a sniper through a window but it turned out all my gear was fine... and nobody came to finish me off when I crawled outside to make splints. Devs are aware of the bug... I'm not sure it's been fixed?

Is there a way around this?

I reported a bug involving not being able to finish drinking all of a canteen (it just never stops until cancelled) and someone suggested that once you start the animation you press and hold W until it stops... He said it would work for all of these "unfinished" animations- I know this is an older thread but might be worth a try?

    How was your Day(Z)?

Yes... The tripods are actually in game already except they are just placeholders so far. That improvised knife is also something I haven't played around with yet but that I will be very soon since my screwdriver is ruined. I have yet to cook meet or fish- nevermind trap anything so I think it's time for ZH and I to get inland a bit and ween ourselves off bacon, tuna, beans and peaches for awhile. Okay... well... tuna, beans and peaches can go but bacon... 10 year old canned bacon... if it's anything like wine that gets better with age then this stuff is going to drop my pants and lead me straight to paradise city.

    How to navigate the maps?

Probably one of the best posts on the subject I've ever seen- except this part. I haven't tested it yet but I just read that when you open the in game map up it centers on your location... if that's true then sort of makes the whole matter moot. Not to mention the fact that the online map doesn't show you where you are- you still need to be able to navigate using terrain features and landmarks. I'm sticking to familiar areas and learning the features / landmarks by heart so not only do I not need a compass... I don't need a map.

    How was your Day(Z)?

I felt bad for misinformation so I went into the wiki and checked out the crafting. It does say that you need at least 1 log but can have up to 5 for "fuel" however you can start one with books, bandages and / or rags / kindling etc. But books can in fact substitute the log for fuel? Oh- and what's the benefit of stones on the campfire... does it just release heat for longer? Here is where I'm looking: http://dayz.gamepedia.com/Cooking Thanks Kirov.

    Ghillie suit discussion.

Sounded like there was a bug where during resets the helicopters would move but their loot would stay in place... I think that was giving people the impression they were invisible.

    The "new" cheating.

That's right so it isn't just because the publics are cheaper- it's so they can bounce anywhere they want while privates are individual characters. Excellent description! Beans. I'd also never thought of the private shard's similar problem- but yes, clearly it has been made that easy. Sounds like a difficult problem to manage and I'm sure glad I'm not the guy in the think tank.

lol okay then. Enjoy the relative safety of hunting for helicopter crash sites.

    How was your Day(Z)?

Hmmm, well maybe you're right actually... I should probably have double checked. I thought you just needed the sticks to get it started- but now that you mention it you're probably right to get it to burn long enough to actually warm you you're likely do need the logs. Shoot. Sorry Belph I didn't think that one through enough before I spoke. I'm still new- just sucks to see someone have a bad time when from what I've read it is getting better all the time.

    Ghillie suit discussion.

Greg- my original ghillie character was shaking like a jackhammer and it seemed like nothing I could do would stop it. While in the ghillie I sprinted straight from NWAF down to Berezino without stopping and that's what made it stop. When you say "run around a lot," do you mean THAT much? Or do you mean what you thought was a lot until you saw that you need to sprint about 7km?

    How to navigate the maps?

Shift tab opens up that Steam interface... Alt-Tab takes you out of the game to your open windows... one of which can be the DayzDB map.
  19. eno

    How was your Day(Z)?

Can't you just search for kindling? Not sure if you even need an axe to make a fire anymore. Rags, matches, sticks... Sounds like a tough go but maybe your expectations were a bit high? I've heard the Vilayer servers are "warmer" servers and the one I've been on has been okay so far...
  20. At least 10 servers eh? Get lots of loot while you were bouncing around? Kidding. Kind of.

    Ghillie suit discussion.

When you mention that I am reminded of the 7 S's of concealment- some but not all really apply to DayZ: Shape: Ghilley breaks up the form but only in adequate / appropriate surroundings. Shine: Don't think this applies however contrast might- in terms of using bright coloured items etc. Don't think it's possible to render reflections from the sun off binocs, scopes... weapons etc. Sound: This one does apply but unfortunately most of the sounds that indicate a person is near can be heard throughout the game in almost all areas. Sounds of pop cans opening, gates clanking, people chewing, twigs breaking... There are also workarounds including rolling that make no sound whatsoever. Silhouette: Definitely something to think about when considering crossing terrain... not cresting hilltops- traversing terrain from below ridgelines etc. Surroundings: Keep in mind your actual surroundings change and are rendered differently from a distance so though you may be hiding VERY well within 50M from someone- you're literally out in the open at 300M. Some of this also depends on how individuals are running their settings- Shadow: High gamma and brightness often used in night servers will cause shadows to evaporate during the day or at least be much less effective for concealment- if there are any shadows at all! Players have an option to turn a lot of things down at the expense of graphic appeal... makes it much more difficult to hide against the people who are VERY committed to the PVP lifestyle. Speed: As mentioned by mugur- but there are two theories... one way or the other, if you're there in my LOS there's a good chance that I can see you. While speed is more likely to get you detected, moving slow will make it more likely that I'll be able to hit you while you're out in the open. Move slowly to check out your surroundings from cover, but move quickly from one cover position to another. Again this is my rookie perspective on matching the 7 S's with some elements of the game environment. We can talk IRL all we want- but it's the game life that we're stuck in. Mugur- you did a great job of connecting your assessment with the game environment so that comment isn't pointed at you at all... (being out in the open as the only bush... hiding in a gas station trying to blend in with the pumps) Just putting it out there for future input. I welcome further insights on the 7 S's as they apply to the gaming environment.

    How was your Day(Z)?

Took some time to get into position back around Berezino where I have a pretty good view. On days where I just accept that I'm unlikely to see anything I usually see someone straight away but last night I literally sat there for 2 hours looking for any activity at all and saw none. Of course this tends to increase boredom and complacency at proportionate levels so I logged off instead of becoming a cross dressing murderer for shits and giggles.

    Ghillie suit discussion.

Since I was murdered in my last one I did manage to go collect the 10x burlap sacs and 5 netting needed. I noticed a few people say that painting the ghillie is bugged and maybe it is- What I wonder is if people paint the wrap, then the hood and then try to do the full top- Keep in mind you need about 130 - 140% paint... so minimum of 2 paint cans. 1 of those needs at least 100% in it to do the top on its own. I mentioned this in "how was your dayz" thread but I'll put it here since the ghillie is the subject. I'm seeing the feedback about the usefulness of the full ghillie and that the hood / wrap should be sufficient- PROBABLY? I haven't worked alongside another ghillie at all and only ever been able to evaluate effectiveness when ZH210 and I are working on computers almost side by side. Too late for me anyway since I've already crafted my full ghillie. I noticed someone who looked like he knew what he was talking about on youtube... and his ghilley was tan hood and gun wrap with a woodland full top... I thought about the area where I work near the coast and the ground overlay is very tan... A lot more orange / yellow in the trees etc. Ground effect (when it's actually rendered) is darker... So I'm trying out the tan hood and wrap (to camo from the front) and leaving the woodland top to cam the back. Logic in that is that the way I set up it would be very, very unlikely for someone to spot me from a distance from behind so if someone came up from behind me it would make it much more difficult to spot me in the darker undergrowth. Anyone have any strategies in using existing cover? Feedback about shadows and how dark ground becomes light as you approach? Tips or tricks in how you use the overall environment? In counter sniper work, what are you looking for? Any terrain feature in particular that you look for?

    How to navigate the maps?

From Hicks in the developer thread- for some reason the quote isn't coming over properly: You should be able to find a map on sites like DayZ Insider, DayZ TV, etc. I'm fairly certain any time we publish an update they trawl the data. Looks like these resources are pretty darned close. I don't think in the time I've researched this game that I've seen a single person on the entire internet not recommend the DayZDB map- official or not.

    The "new" cheating.

^ Yeah. That's hilarious. So because a guy wants to pay money for his own server, that entitles him to loot at leisure there and then likely end up in the "different" server as you've recommended? Sounds awesome for the rest of us. Sure- it entitles him to do whatever he wants in his own... but this is taking server hopping to a new level. Let's call it "Server Shopping" from now on.
