    Mansions

Castles aren't enough? Never seen an eastern block mansion before. Looking forward to some photos. All of what you're saying sounds like a different facade on existing large buildings. Rich people in what is generally accepted as a communist nation? Sure... But they're not rich in their nation. They're rich elsewhere. Like, where they can have mansions. ***snooze***

    How's The Game Lookin'?

I've been hearing a lot of good about .58... Looking forward to it being released on stable. One of the reasons I'm looking forward to that is that I have had exposure to .55 down to about .4X something. Maybe a bit sooner. The joy in being part of an Alpha release is the conversation you have with the people you play with as you roam around the map that goes something like: "I like the way you can use the scope without a weapon." "Yeah... and you can actually move it around- it's not just stuck in the horizontal." "Oh yeah, I remember that... what was that, like .51 or something." "Yeah. Something like that." "Aw $^@$#%" "What?" "I just noticed that my Druganov is missing... must have dropped it when we climbed over that fence back there." "Jesus... how far back?" "No idea I even dropped it. Could have been anywhere!" "Do you want to go back and look for it?" "Nah- let's just keep going." "Fricken Alpha." "Alpha." And at some point that will be fixed too... but you'll never full appreciate how good the game becomes unless you are exposed to how good it wasn't.

    How was your Day(Z)?

I've found that some disappearing gear can be restored if you log out and log back in- not sure exactly when it works vs when it doesn't but might be something to hope for.

    How was your Day(Z)?

Well- a mixed bag last night with DaveB. On the top shelf he finally got a mic working so we were able to communicate for the first time and I can verify that he is not, in fact, a dolphin embedded in some top secret naval research study in facilitating communication between the species through Steam. We'd made it to the southern end of Berezino and after a little running around decided to stop tickling the sides and to just push in towards Chez Eno. Thought that going straight in would rip the bandaid off and once at Chez Eno we could hole up and evaluate how much further we were going to go. This was a 50/50 server- busy... and new to both of us. A pub server is a pub server- it takes all kinds... but sometimes you get a different feel from one versus the other. Sometimes it's a little less PvP- other times even the trees want to kill you. We weren't sure where this server was going to fit in that analogy, so we were both being cautious. I made contact just before the east / west road that branches off the main highway and ducked out of sight. "Single contact... looks like he's seen me- I'm taking cover." The individual I saw had stopped around the same time I did so I took it for granted that I was seen. I dropped behind a bush and thinking I might be seeing a few rounds coming my way took partial shelter behind one of the posts lining the tracks. "Where is he?" "Just south of Chez Eno... just came out of the trees from the-" snap... snap- along with impact on the post. "I'm taking fire here... I'm hit- I'm hit." I sort of lost track of Dave at that point- I thought he was further back but he was in fact further forward and to my left. I caught a glimpse of him before I withdrew. "Can you flank?" "Not sure- bleeding but otherwise I seem okay. I'm going to back off and head around the left." Dave then started taking fire and was hit. "I'm unconscious-" "Fuck. I have an epi pen but I've got to get it up there to use it... No idea where this guy is anymore." "He's right in front of me- in the next tree." I fired a few rounds into a few trees- no idea if I hit anything. Then the character came into view around a bush and tried leaning out to get a couple shots in on him. My rifle was all over the place. I fired a couple shots- then he fired a shot into DaveB. "I'm dead." More expletives from me... I leaned around again and started shooting but I think my arm was broken because I couldn't aim at all. He got a few more shots into me and I was unconscious... then dead soon after. Probably had it coming for one reason or another but it was still frustrating to have felt like I flailed so badly. We both respawned immediately and I was fortunate in that I got put on the north side of Berezino- a quick sprint from where I dropped... maybe get a taste of who just took us out. Not to take anything away from him since he took out both of us and showed great skills- but I was curious about whether or not this player would shoot a freshie on sight. DaveB was spawned in around Krutoy Cap and I knew I was going to be on my own for awhile. I saw movement as I entered the north side of Berezino- someone running across the street towards the water. It was right around where I'd expect someone to be if they'd just been involved in our slaying. I continued sprinting down the middle of the road. Snap- ugh! Okay... well now there's a good chance I know what type of person we're dealing with. I dropped with at least one broken leg and then had to start crawling... forgot to turn my shirt into rags... and also forgot that rags were standard gear. Either way it didn't matter- both were ruined and covered with blood. I was bleeding and had a broken leg. "Well well well-" I hear someone say. I can't remember exactly what he said after as much as it was very taunting- you know the kind... you know the whole "I owned you bish... how you like that?" "Yeah- shot a freshie... you're a terrifying predator- a mercenary." "Look at you crawling... where you going to go?" He stands above me then shoots at me... miss. "You didn't seriously just try to shoot me with a sniper rifle (a .308 remington with a ghillie wrap on it- similar to DaveB's it might be worth mentioning)." Another shot- miss. I keep crawling around. He stood above me at one point and said "you just tried to ambush my friend... so this is what you get." All I can figure is that he checked pulse on me before I respawned and got my name... this guy might have checked pulse on me to get my ID and made the connection. He shoots at me again... and again... I think he hit me once but missed a bunch- felt like half a dozen times or so. Not sure what the Remington carries off hand but it was more than a few shots. I was still crawling like crazy- but when I looked up over my shoulder this guy was running away. You can only imagine what I said over my shoulder. I crafted a stone knife, went to a bush and cut it down for some sticks. Now I just needed some rags. Fortunately it turned out I was very near a guard house- so with my broken arm and leg... bleeding... I was able to crawl over to it and swim across a lake of high cap and assault vests, grabbed an AK, ammo, mag... then I found a rag in one of the half dozen vests. Sweet! A red bike helmet- hmmmm... okay, fine. Need all the protection I can get. "Hello." WTF. "Uh- hello?" "Hey." Sounded a lot like the last guy- "Yeah, hey... it's me. You and I just had a bit of a row but I'm over it... Let's just carry on shall we?" "I just got in this server man. You cool?" "Yeah- busted up pretty bad... leg, arm..." "Sorry- don't have any IV stuff." "Maybe a bandage? Got a bandage?" "Yeah- I think so... here mate." Nice guy! "Careful- the guy who did this is skulking around and his buddy has skills. They're not afraid to shoot." Stay tuned for part 2.

    How was your Day(Z)?

Yeah... we have identical weapons. DaveB let me fondle his Remington with hunter scope last night and I must admit I think it would support my play style better than the AK74... We were on the coast yesterday and worked from Nizhnoye to Three Valleys and down around the Horn... Not a ton happened until the end (pretty common every time I tell anyone I have about 5 minutes before I need to log). A truck went by us while we were looking for netting at 3V and both of us took cover. It went past us without a fuss- but neither of us feels great when trucks are near. He got run over by the first one he encountered and me? Well... I fear conflict. Dave and I had moved semi-tactical down to Krutoy Cap with the intention of hitting a boat spawn just west of there in search of netting for his gun wrap. We made our way around the houses located there- "Truck!" Dave managed to type at almost immediately the same time I realized what I was looking at. The driver's door was open- Then I heard a dull thud. Like shooting but... "Can I hear shooting?" "Like axe on a tree." I took cover on my side of the house, peeking around the corner through the sights. I had a perfect view across the driver's side of the truck... Am I going to shoot the driver? Am I going to try to make contact? Thud... Thud.... Thud. I checked around the other side of the house- clear. Went back to the truck side just in time to see the operator coming back to climb in. I held fire- but heard a shot. I know what you're thinking before you think it... DaveB assassinated another innocent survivor, cut off his ear and added it to his growing necklace. Well- you're wrong again! Instead, Dave types, "I shot his tire." Just as he types that, the guy gets out of the truck and runs to the back. Looks at the tire (I SWEAR I saw him kick the front tandem), then goes around to the other side of the truck and taking a peek on the front driver side tire on the way by. To be honest I'm not even entirely certain why I did it... whether it's some fear of people in trucks- or the thought that they're all hackers who are going to make the truck levitate in the air and drop on my head... Maybe the curiosity of whether or not a tactical helmet can take a 5.45mm round- whatever it was that made me pull the trigger on him as he got back into the truck (maybe I just wanted the truck?)- I'm not 100% sure... but I was INSTANTLY filled with regret. Oh, by the way... it can take a bullet so the regret was very short lasting. At that point my regret was that I didn't shoot his face in the face. Instantly- engine off. Buddy leaps from the truck and starts sprinting around- heads out towards the water but disappears between the houses and the shed. I figure he's got a bead on me and he's moving to flank so I sprint out onto the road and to the west past the truck and back behind cover beside the fence nearby. I think he was bandaging- looking for a fight. Well- he's going to get one! I thought to myself as I silently prayed for DaveB to step in and burn his world to the ground while I wrote my name in sanskrit with urine on the fence during a nervous pee. Where the heck is Schwab when I need him!? Family eh? Pfft. The guy didn't pull out guns akimbo and start shooting us into tetley teabags... nor did he turn the world inside out, fold it in half and then make our game crash. He got back in the truck as fast as he could and took off leaving us to shoot at his tires... which we did albeit with questionable effect. Sigh- late for bed again!
  8. Two kids eh? And how buggy are they at this point? Have the mothers met? Just sayin- DayZ will be in it's 3rd finished version by the time either of your kids are outside messing up your lawn with a weed whacker for the first time nevermind building a base... so how about ya cut the devs some slack hmmm?

Most frustrating way you have died?

The most frustrating... I wrote about it HERE A bit of background on that death, however... was that I hadn't heard any sound. No gasp... no shot... not a sound. I was just mid-step and then "you are dead." GRANTED there's a chance someone took a good long shot at me and hit me in the head... just dropping me. At the time, that's what I thought. Then I came in and started seeing more people complaining about just randomly dying- middle of nowhere... 0 pop server (well, 1 person ie: the guy who died). Same signs... Might be worth adding that any time I've been killed since, from near or far, I've heard something... a snap... my character making some weird gasping noise... something- anything! Correlation / Causation... yadda yadda. So either way- whether it was a game glitch or a dude with much better shooting skills than I have (or a plant with same skills- doesn't take much)- that was my most frustrating. I'd spent hours seeking out burlap and netting... made my ghillie because that's what I wanted... mosin / scope / compensator / black-green paint... wrap- everything... All gone. Frustrating because up until that point I'd known that the first rule of dayZ was "don't get attached to your gear" but I didn't know why. And that was my intro.
  10. I did try it out in 3pp and there is sound added to that. What I haven't tried out or at least noticed is if someone else is rolling if it makes a sound for you. I'm assuming so but... Going to have to try it tonight.
  11. Mentioned it in another thread... the fact that you can fire off an entire magazine and maintain your hearing- I think it may also help discourage the proliferate use of firearms within the game- if shooting dampened your hearing for a certain amount of time afterwards. A couple minutes of ringing in the ear after a shot... continued use resulting in longer term hearing loss. Might be a nice way to balance things out! Anyway- just an opinion. Thoughts?

    How was your Day(Z)?

As promised DaveB ducked into Berezino looking for the elusive paint can and after scouring the entire south side to about the hospital we got bored and figured we might as well head to the construction site. We didn't find a single item there... I think Dave summed it up best when he typed: "There's a nice view- but that's about it." I took a look around and saw no activity. When Dave joined me the server pop had been quite low but by the time we were clear of the industrial site it was packed full. "How about we run our old route down to Nizhnoye and head to the factory... see if there's anyone around we can help out? Loads of people in here and this is a common spawn area." "Sure." Dave typed in reply. We headed down and almost immediately saw a fresh running along the beach. He didn't want any part of me as I stepped out to join him and just kept on running in a straight line. I tried calling out to him but he didn't hesitate to frost me out... It was a bit strange since there are only two reasons to totally ignore someone: 1) You're afraid the guy with the AK / Hunter gear is going to kill you 2) See 1. Okay- granted he may have not had a mic so he may not have heard me (did they ever fix that, I wonder?)... or maybe he was in a hurry to "help his people" or something... but 9 times out of 10 if you're going to elude someone it's because you're worried about getting killed. But the guy just ran in a straight line... no sniper shuffle... just ran straight. I ALMOST killed him just because it made no sense- but then I realized that not being given an opportunity to help someone is not a justifiable reason to shoot them in the back. So we carried on to the south. Niz hadn't had anything and as Dave pointed out, "Looks like someone's been through here already- a lot of open doors." Definitely more than just random doors... and we found nothing. We got to the road block just north of the factory and I spied another relative freshy with a motorcycle helmet on (and as a rule I don't like those)... I think he was in "road autopilot" mode when he looked up and saw a couple of handsome gentlemen with rifles pointing at him politely telling him to stop and put his hands up. And when I say politely- I mean we could have charmed the queen's panties off from our relentless pursuit of pure, unbridled eloquence. I mean... I'm not sure why you'd want to- but hey... Keep an open mind. Our new friend was quite cooperative and we quickly learned he had returned from a break from the game for a few months. He was a bit out of sorts (and ended up having to take a phone call halfway through our interaction after having locked the microphone open- probably by accident). He needed some water and food so we provided him with a canteen, some and some sardines. "Oh wait," I took the sardines back. "Who the fuck wants sardines when you can have peaches!" DaveB (spoiler alert: doesn't actually kill this guy) offered the guy a crafted improvised knife for the journey and we sent him on his way. There was some graphical glitching going on and the guy was nice enough to point out that it looked like Dave had left his AK on the ground. I was relieved to see that he hadn't said so while sprinting towards it with every intention of rocking it like an air guitar all over us. Dave had his AK... but part of it was still on the ground... Weird. "Welcome to .57 dude... Things are probably better than when you left but there's still some work to do!" "Alpha." "Alpha..." Alpha. It's like a salute between players. Anyway- we bid the guy farewell and wished him luck. A cursory look into the factory revealed no kit at all... and the search for the mystical paint can continues!

Resento- if you're going to ask these questions at least post your system specs. As for the blurry issue you have, go into your video processing and turn off post processing. On a side note- if you don't want people to be cynical or unhelpful in response to your questions... at least demonstrate some evidence that you've done at least a little of your own research in here before you're asking questions that have been covered literally hundreds of times. You come in here asking what gun is better and why my system is lagging and we have no idea what your play style or intention is nor your system specs... C'mon man- you gotta put a effort in and stop expecting the people who already know to do all the work for you.

    Questions

Each server has its own settings indicated in the server list... public / private can be 1rst or it can be both 1rst / 3rd. I think private servers are called "shards." Public = hives. Not sure what the significance is... but there ya go. Private shards / servers are their own entity- each with their own character. All public servers are the same character but different spawn items and loot economy.
  16. Had the weapon thing happen to my partner last night during a battle... he couldn't put any weapon in his hand. I have it happen all the time where I need to hit my key 4-5 times to select a weapon- but eventually I get it. Last night he couldn't put anything in his hand- I'm like most of you and just realize this is part of the process. It's my first pre-release experience and I'm glad to be a part of it but I'm not as understanding when I am in the middle of a firefight with a character I've spent the last 15 hours fine tuning with the kit I like. "Don't get attached to your kit" is often referred to as rule 1 of dayZ for a reason... which is why after 15 minutes of being all pissed off about it I log back in and start all over.

    How was your Day(Z)?

Had a bit of a strange one last night with DaveB... starting out in Svet and I was in my new found hide looking out over the town for activity. DaveB joined me down below but after 10 minutes of looking around, 3 swan divers (freshies looking to respawn) we got bored and decided to make a break for Chez Eno down in Berezino. For those of you who haven't been here since we tried that concept out- Chez Eno intended to be a quick stop shop for the desperate to get a variety of supplies to sustain a trip inland. Generally it was for people who knew the coast wasn't a safe place to be... especially near Berezino. Take some supplies, and a rain coat... here's a melee weapon and get out of here. For some time we'd actually tried to help "escort" people through Berezino to safety but didn't find a lot of people to help in that regard. Anyway... DaveB got on with Schwab and I back in those days and he and I figured we'd head down there and check it out. With a full server, we knew there was going to be some trouble but between the two of us we were confident that we could manage ourselves accordingly. We were on Steam chat but his mic is on the fritz- so he can hear me but he doesn't use voice. In the back of my mind, the number of people running into town from the east / SE, up the industrial building and jumping off (without knowing we were there this time) in such a short period was indication to me that something was going on somewhere else. Hopefully not Berezino. We headed south through the trees between the rails and the road... being relatively cautious but by the time we got to Riffy we (I?) were (was) getting a bit careless. This was evident when out of nowhere I thought I heard a voice building up from behind me. "Hey! Hey!" WTF? "Did you hear th-" I was cut off as the voice got louder. "I know you can hear me!" I looked around behind me to see a fresh in his underoos sprinting up. DaveB was in front... so checking 6 had been my responsibility. I had just been issued a flaming F grade for my performance. I mean... really? "Listen, can you just kill me? I need to get (somewhere) to help out my people." 0 hesitation- DaveB drills him. A quick pause before I see Dave type out: "How did we miss him?" I was relieved to see he took some ownership since I was feeling pretty sheepish to have been ambushed by Frank the Tank. We carried on more tactically from this point- with each of us taking our turns checking 6 as we took the rear position in our Berezino Express. Gradually as veg closer to the water thinned out, we headed slightly west towards a small church. This landmark was just starting to come into view when we heard gun shots. Something heavier- a pretty good thud but no snap... So not likely being shot at us. We both went to ground and listened. "That coming from the church?" Which was to our right. Dave types out "Sounds like up ahead- 100m." "Okay- So closer to the tracks." There is a newer rail yard located on the North side of Berezino along the coast. The advantage of Chez Eno back in the days we were running that was that I became intimately familiar with every feature of Berezino... common spawn points, common sniper hides... I could visualize out of sight areas and maneuver accordingly. This new configuration was still relatively unknown to me so I was totally disorientated. We stayed low- and random shots rang out... We weren't sure at whom so gradually we both leopard crawled our way closer. A few more shots- then silence. "Contact..." Dave types out- "Fresh." I was able to see a fresh with a blue shirt run past the rolling stock lined up on the tracks... but no gunfire. He ran out of sight... no shots. We inched closer. DaveB moved between the trees- I crouched and started moving a bit faster to give him some cover. Shots- smaller caliber weapon this time... faster rate... and now accompanied by the telling "snaps" of rounds passing closer by. We moved a bit more- now we're hearing the shots, the snaps AND the impacts. "Pull Back!" Dave managed to type out before beating cheeks in a quick advance to the rear. We maneuvered around that area, heading west then south of the church... then back in towards the source of continued gunfire in both calibers. It was still near the tracks around that rail yard... Maybe we could see more from the hill on the south side of the road we were approaching? What happened next was pretty chaotic but involved a lot of maneuvering on our part... some confusion as we lost track of one another while being shot at and then add occasional zeds drawn into the fray... I found myself wishing persistence was on so that I could put my pack down and lower my profile. There were times I wish I'd been able to dig a shell scrape from being unable to get down low enough- the intensity of everything happening around us at that moment really helped to remind me what it is about this game that I enjoy so much. We both eventually had to log out of this disaster before identifying the location of the shooter/s... Felt a bit guilty having to break contact at that moment but that's how it goes sometimes. Dave's situation was made worse as we were starting to get closer to our opponents and couldn't get his weapon in hand. "Can't load anything in my hand... bug?" he typed out in frustration I could feel 3 provinces away. We both withdrew to a safe location and agreed we'd go at it again- maybe tonight (cough Schwab cough)!

16 hours in, met my first player!

Pretty easy provided you have a headset / mic set up. Nice thing about it is that Steam will notify you of people in your friends list coming into DayZ. If you want to talk to them just hit left Shift and Tab to open up the communication screen. Just view friends and double click on their name to open a chat window with them. Click on the arrow in the top right of the chat window and click "start voice chat (I think)." It will ring them and they'll have the option of picking it up. Let's say that you and schwab are chatting away and he sees me come in- then he can click on that arrow again, go "invite to chat" and it'll show him a list of people he can invite. He'll choose my name and it brings me in on the conversation- Once that is done he can Shift Tab out and back into the game. It works in the background and from what I know is not resource intensive. The effect is the same as TS3- but the process is a little different. Balota is, unfortunately, the exact opposite of the map from where we're working right now. Unless you find a truck... (or we do!)
