I respectfully disagree- I get what you're saying- and agree that it is hard. I also have no idea whatsoever why we have the flashlight. I have started keeping the battery, however. I do, however, disagree that we need additional protection because it's raining out. It'd be like starting you out with a melee weapon (in case zombies are nearby), a down jacket (if it's cold) and sun glasses (if it's sunny.)

    Centrally located servers?

I agree... hoping that's something being worked on in the background since right now it's pretty chaotic. I've been hunting around gametracker, trying to get more proficient at finding information so I can gather it quickly. There is some great info on there. Thanks Krazy!

    How was your Day(Z)?

Wow... So that's what we're up against eh? Here's hoping this new .53 slams a door on some of that. Maybe someone else can offer an explanation but it looks pretty convincingly below board.

    Anti-Stab Vest?

Oh so you were talking about the SPECIFIC anti-stab vest... not just a vest that would give you protection from various weapons. Okay! Mah bad. ;)

    Anti-Stab Vest?

I thought the press vest gave some protection in that regard? Going to have to double check since I've been wearing one for that reason alone. Mind you the extra storage is nice too... EDIT: Guess I'm not going crazy... Press Vest I found mine in a hospital... and have seen them there on the front counter quite often.
  6. Okay- sorry for the noob question but this has been bugging me: Let's say that there's a private server I go to and it spends more time down than up... who do I contact about that? Are all game files hosted at the server you rent from and if so what inputs on the part of the server "renter" can make the difference between a reliable server and an unreliable one? So the server I'm looking at is a Vilayer server- it drops for hours at a time (and for the love of god please don't tell me it's the normal reset- we've been through this)... I don't intend to complain but I want to be able to tell SOMEONE that the thing isn't working the way it should. Do I tell devs here? I saw a thread at one point but noticed it was made last year and tapered off... I see here that this guy mentions he has to "restart my server regularly" so does this mean it's on his computer, routed through Vilayer as a "master" server? This is what has caused some of my confusion understanding the relationship between the client, host / renter, provider and BI. Do I notify Vilayer? Is there some way I can figure out who the renter is- or does that not even matter? Or do I just walk away and find another server? I ask this here since the op wasn't aware of the server situation- and though I understand they have to be rented I'm having a hard time understanding how it's actually setup between BI, vilayer (in this case) and the person paying the bills, Thanks in advance for your patience.

OP- I came in with 0 knowledge of the game or the mod and with the most basic experience in Arma2 and 3- so I know a little about the trials of a total freshie... not just on the coast with nothing but a battery and a flashlight and some addidas- but with no idea of where to go from there. The map was entirely new to me... I had no idea there was an online map I could use instead of crafting one out of 4 maps I never seem to be able to find- I'd spawn in somewhere totally unknown, go somewhere totally unknown and get killed by something totally unknown (hypothermia? In a game? Never had that happen before!) I've always been a bit of a forum guy so it was my first stop after I was proving to be exquisitely unsuccessful in my approach. I paid particular interest to the "How was your DayZ" thread and learned how other new folks were adapting to the game. Little tricks emerged as they made discoveries and elaborated on them a little. A few trips to the wiki also helped somewhat but I'm told they're quite outdated. So that thread became my wiki. While I'm not going to hate on the suggestion that the fresh spawns have it too hard... I'm going to disagree with it. It's not that I enjoy fresh spawning in to find that I'm already being mauled by zombies or that I can't find an ounce of food before starving to death with 4 cans of food on me and no way to open them (I thought). But I will recommend that you not sit around and wait for the game to change to suit you and instead put some energy into learning how to adapt to it. The improvised knife is- bar nothing- probably one of the best features of the game to enhance survival. Use it to chop kinding from bushes... use it to open cans, quarter and skin animals... cut burlap strips... cut ashwood branches off... chop the top off a plastic bottle to make a fish trap... pluck seeds out of vegetables for future use- I mean the thing does almost everything you need to prepare yourself for opportunity. Sure, maybe it won't allow you to dig for worms... and it won't help you prepare a hole to plant a seed... and I'm not sure it's a great weapon to fight off a zombie- but it is a tool that truly maximizes your potential while only taking ONE slot! Amazing... and in fact in some respects may have made survival TOO easy. I encourage you to go and write a diary of your own in the "how was your dayz" thread. It's fun to look back at my first posts and see the things I didn't know that I do now... and how many pieces of the developers intentions have fallen into place. There are still a few missing- make no mistake... but that's what we signed up for! See ya!

What do you want to see in .54

The most annoying thing in the game to me right now is the random sounds... but I don't think that should be getting priority per se. Though I don't think I've had a direct interaction with a hacker I would like to see priority being given on ensuring everyone has an equal opportunity to enjoy the game within the same parameters available to all.

    Hey... You friendly?

Problem with those games for a guy like that, Pil... is that everyone shoots back.

    How was your Day(Z)?

Okay- you just can't drop an APB like that without a background story. I've seen your posts Pilgrim- I know you can type... So out with it! ;)
  12. I don't know if it's been brought up before- searches for fishing and guts don't turn up anything obvious. Thought it might be nice to use the small pile of guts as bait in the fish trap so that you can get back to fishing with it. It's already a very versatile item as a rope substitute- but when you "prepare fish" while still in the fish trap it leaves the guts in the trap- It'd be nice to be able to walk away knowing that it could be bait. Just a thought.
  13. OP- my suggestion to you is to find a less populated private shard... it's never any guarantee that you're not going to get killed- but you're definitely unloading a few chambers of wheel gun for your inevitable game of Russian Roulette. People are a bit less "rammy" on the privates since they can't just bounce from server to server to fetch loot from bases and beat up of freshies who have no interest in confrontation. A few of us have been recording a sort of diary in the "How was your DayZ" thread. Some of them are quite long but really help to emphasize the potential of the game if you look at it in the right light. Nobody can really help you with the glitching and the server performance- that's something the devs need to work on. But in terms of gameplay- I think what you need is the reassurance that not all servers, and not all players are created equal. Some of the most lethal players the game has seen are the ones who will take they gear off and let you choose what you want. While there is no shortage of jagoffs who will kill you- the number 1 rule I've read about DayZ is "Don't get attached to your gear." 15 hours of looting- I can only imagine the neat stuff you accumulated... but if you weren't complaining about starting over again you might be in here complaining about "What do I do now that I have everything I need?" I was feeling down about a week ago and decided I would spend more time learning how to live off the land... go hunt a deer (had to be a deer) and kill it. Make a bow and arrow... find the feathers. Craft a knife. Find matches! (ugh)... This will help you figure out how little you need to survive. That way, if you do get wiped or killed... getting back on track is not as daunting a task unless you've made a CONSCIOUS decision to live in excess.

    0/30 Players, WAIT FOR HOST

My resident private server has crashed a bunch of times for full cycles- (two hours or more) you can often tell if your history and Internet lists show them at the same time but different numbers of people. If (in addition to that) you wait two minutes and the time doesn't change with a refresh it's probably crashed.

Hmmm. How about an akm for a pumpkin? Fresh grown and only fired once!

    Creating "Care Packages"

This is inline with what I'm doing on my less than busy server- but a big part of the benefit is I keep everything hidden away. I grow a bunch of veg (especially pumpkins now), and have a well right on site so they can drink up. Got a water bottle they can use to speed up the process but it's kind of on faith that they give it back. I'll give them the tools they need to craft their own backpack... show them how to craft an improvised knife (probably the most useful tool in the game)... Maybe some seeds to grow? While I admire your commitment- I can't help but feeling like you're not really providing these folks with the tools they need to survive. Oh yes, you're GIVING them what they need until that stuff runs out... but not really helping them to find alternatives. With that said- I'm not wanting to come off like I'm dumping on your idea... if someone walked up to me and said- here you go... this will do you for awhile I'd probably be really happy- but VERY suspicious. I wouldn't take it on the grounds that you'll give it to me, get me to turn my back and kill me then give it to the next guy like it's some sick fetish of yours. Why would I feel that way? We all know. (Because dayz) Then again- they'd probably feel the same way with me doing it my way... I've got a "shop" set up that I like to call "Chez Eno." It's at a well that has a greenhouse... some good access to common routes (most I've seen running along the train tracks)... I help them craft their improvised knives... give them seeds to grow and ample veg to get them through the trek ahead... If I have any left I had over a melee weapon to protect themselves mostly from zombies... You are offering my plan on steroids- I couldn't POSSIBLY collect that many resources... But on topic- if you can provide that it's very, very generous. WAY too generous- in my opinion- for what this game has created at this point.

    Hey... You friendly?

I'm trying to carry more of my deadly weapons internally- in backpacks or under on my shoulder... I don't want to appear threatening but I do want to be able to defend myself.

Where am I ? (The Official)

Yeah- that's for you. The link shows you all cities in the script and in English. I've shown you where you are... so navigate accordingly. The "Disregard my last" was in case anyone saw what I originally wrote before I found the ACTUAL answer. Good luck out there.

    How was your Day(Z)?

ZH was back home last night so we saddled up and joined in my private area so I could show him around the store front. He originally spawned in near Elektro where he must have had a character before since he was already injured. He committed death by zed and respawned in an area not far from Solichny by the factory along the coast. I met up with him quickly and we decided to head over to the medical center there for some supplies. He went in first (I was still running in) and while there saw a freshy hiding from the rain. They made contact and I cautioned ZH to be friendly but keep his distance. The character was very friendly and easy going- especially when I came rumbling up with my repeater / fire axe. We triggered a few zed launches as we made our way around the factory and I dealt with them since the other two were pretty fresh. I had a bag of supplies with me for ZH but more than enough to share with our new friend so I distributed some pumpkin and cooked fish as well as a couple open cans I'd wanted to get rid of... content we headed towards our store as I explained everything to Carl. He was good with it- so he headed north with us along the coast. Unfortunately, this server has been crashing at a ridiculous rate and will be offline for hours so ZH and I headed over to our public characters (overwatch berezino) and made our way around there. I tucked my ghillie out of site in an improvised backpack I crafted up and we set about planting a garden near the well by the hospital in Berezino. I was getting more comfortable so I figured hey... might as well help out here if we can! That server reset as well right in the middle of planting and we'd had a good run so ZH took a break and I branched off to another very busy private shard I'd visited a couple days before. This was chaos to me. I entered Berezino from a spawn up north and the first person I saw had a pipe wrench. I approached them calling out and they charged me swinging. Alright then- I'll give him a miss. He chased me a bit but then went off on his own. I bumped into him a few times and had no luck. I had nothing but an SKS bayonet and had an injured leg but I wasn't able to craft a splint... I got jumped by a zed and a couple characters- and one particularly annoying asshole who had his direct comms locked on with some stupid music playing in the background. Do they have a name for that? I was killed twice in quick succession- both around Berezino since my respawn brought me to the coast just down the road from my shop in the other server. Figured I knew my way around but got jumped in a house by a guy with a splitting axe... okay... 2 down. Spawned back in near Novo at that rare military outpost spawn... saw a couple of dead guys and another dude wearing nothing just standing there. Oh great- here we go again. Fortunately there I met up with someone who sounded quite a bit younger. He asked if I was friendly and I replied that "I'm about as friendly as I can be- I've been murdered twice in the last 10 minutes so if you're going to do it just get it over with now." He really, REALLY sounded like the kid I ran into a the factory a couple weeks ago... He was really cool so we shared a few supplies and got each other in good fighting form. We spotted a guy in a red shirt running down the hill into the city and chased after him in hopes of joining up. We called out to him but he kept running. We came around the corner into a street and after a brief moment of losing my companion heard him talking to someone. "You just killed me man, so yeah- I'm going to kill you." "No, no!" the freshie replied in a thick accent sounding like someone I've seen in a YouTube video. "I don't kill anybody! Don't kill me! No no!" I figured he was just acting and may have had some skills considering he eluded us but never actually ran away. "Yes, yes!" Now, as a rule I wouldn't condone killing a freshie and though we weren't exactly combat ready we did have more than this guy. "You killed me just now, right around the corner. I know it was you. Your turn." "I'll leave it up to you," I said as I approached... "I'll support your decision either way." So it starts- this laggy, glitchy ring around the rosey with this guy begging as he runs around in circles in a proverbial slideshow... Wasn't great. We got a couple shots in on this guy but then a Hero shows up with a gun- presumably with ammo. "Hey! Hey! Leave that man alone!" "This doesn't concern you, hero. This was warranted." "Well let's resolve this like human beings-" And don't get me wrong, I totally agreed with the stance this guy was taking and in fact I admired it... But I was going to support my guy and what he felt he needed to do. "Sorry friend- trying to resolve this like human beings at this point is like slamming the gate after the horse runs out." "Hello? Hello?" That's a different voice... another pretty young voice. "I have 3 zombies chasing me- can you help? I have a friend coming with an M4 but he's too far away." The 3 zeds enter stage left and everyone starts swinging and it was just a fricken circus. Pretty sure I knocked my own guy out by accident and in the meantime got smashed by someone else and had to pull back a bit to bandage. We all regrouped after the Zeds were dead and were standing in a group. My guy had lost interest in killing the red shirt- the hero wasn't saying much and the new arrival was telling us a story about their "friend with the M4." "We can meet him here... he is coming." There was random chatter back and forth... I don't really remember... I was too busy doing the sniper shuffle back and forth- keep it moving. It was like I was in my own aerobics class as the lead instructor... left 2 steps right 3 steps... back 2 steps... forward 5 steps... and one more time! Snap! Snap! Snap! (enter ricochet sounds) "Cease fire cease fire! Who is shooting!" I'm not sure who everyone else thought it was but the rate of fire suggested something automatic... I don't know- like an M4. Everyone scattered- my guy had a bright blue drybag on so I was able to keep track of him but everyone else was a blur. I ran around the corner trying to use 3pp to figure out where the shots came from but couldn't see anyone. My guy spotted someone in a building with a green backpack on but I didn't see which building he was talking about... we were in the middle of downtown! "Let's di di mau!" We broke contact pretty quickly leaving chaos in our wake... we headed towards the train station / factory along the main road heading east west and ended up crashing. I'd have liked to rejoin with my guy but was unable... the server with Chez Eno has had 2 or 3 multi hour outages in the last couple days so I'm starting to question its reliability. Hopefully they get on top of it. I was able to get back in to verify there were lots of supplies out and then logged off. So overall- a busier day than I'm used to but it was good to dip my toe into the deep end of the pool for a change. I think if I can learn to be a better player in that aspect of the game my journey towards being a hero may be a more fruitful one.

Aaaaaaaaaand it just happened again- time just stays the same. Been 20 minutes now. Who do you report these outages to? Is it a server provider issue? Host issue?
