    Server disappeared?

I ran into one real asshat around Elektro (not terribly surprising) and got killed in a fight around NWAF (not terribly surprising) and ambushed in Berezino (not terribly surprising). So this isn't to say that it doesn't happen- but it happens where you can expect it to happen. I've also met some really great characters who were very generous- but also cautious. You'll meet all kinds but I know this is the likely direction I'll be heading too- assuming I can clear the whitelist after snapping at steak a month ago or so.

    How was your Day(Z)?

Been quiet the last few days- haven't been around much as I sit back and watch this .54 patch shake itself out. Also my home base server has dropped off the radar so it's time to look for a new home. I'm thinking Musty since the guys I have played with can see it and I think we all have reasonable pings. Glad to see everyone is still hard at it!

    Server disappeared?

If you mean private servers that are unlocked... then currently I think Musty is the best show in town. Looked like they were going whitelist in about a month but I think their whitelist survey is more relaxed than some of the ones I've heard about.

    Server disappeared?

I think the same thing happened to us in a private shard- 3pp pers on server... sad to say it's been down for 3 days so I think the contract was up.

That wasn't you, was it Sacha? ;)
  6. Hmmmm... I call this the flat tire response and I don't recommend it. The concept is you get a flat tire, put your car in the garage for a month in hopes that when you go back and check on it that the tire has been repaired and the car is good to go. My suggestion to you would be quite the opposite. Go into busy servers- preferably private since things are a little less ridiculous on the private side... and stay near the beach up and down the coast. Granted the SW side is going to be more rammy and you'll get killed more just on principle- but you'll also be exposed more to the interactions and learn how YOU want to develop your methods of communicating. Staying on the coast without any real equipment of value other than the basics will give you less to feel like you want to hold on to and will reduce the fear of interaction. You'll get killed... probably a lot if you don't have a mic (that's going to trample on your experience though I know some people just can't play with mic.) To be blunt- trying to learn how to interact or "be new" without a mic is likely going to be very, very difficult. I played for awhile without a working mic and was unable to see or hear any correspondence with anyone- took a lot of enjoyment out of the game. It's a glitch. You don't suffer it since you were able to hear this guy talking to you... Musty gaming's server is a pretty balanced group- I've been killed there but it was in areas that it was kill or be killed. Most of the interactions I've had with people outside of the hot zones has been pretty friendly. How would you approach someone in normal conversation if you bumped into them in the street? "Hey man- how's it going?" If they can't see you, "I'm just on your left here approaching... I do have a weapon drawn but I'm no threat- just want to protect myself. I will keep my distance." Sometimes, even with your best intentions, that person may turn and unload his shotgun in your face in which case (if you survive that) it's time to escape and evade. You can run a ludicrous pattern and sniper shuffle like nobody's business in this game- forever if need be... so don't be afraid to tactically advance to the rear with enthusiasm. Other times, the guy will just say hi back... ask if you need anything. Maybe ask if you have some food or bandages... or seen some item or another in your travels. Always be cautious around people- friendly and trustworthy aren't always synonymous... not by a long shot.
  7. Righteous kill in my mind- I know exactly the kind of idiot you're talking about when you mention the youtube videos... I've seen a couple of those and though I haven't ever killed one (because as it turned out that was what they wanted me to do)- I understand why you did. Unfortunately when people get bored in this game- instead of finding something else to do they get some weird satisfaction from annoying the 4ck out of everyone in their proximity... like it's our fault. Sigh.

    Pc Specs

Yes as others have said this system is a no go- for the reasons given as well as the fact it doesn't have an ssd out of the box. Sure you can put one in later, but you might as well get a friend who knows computers to recommend some good quality mid range parts and help you build it. Or look online for a good custom built system that someone overbuilt and now needs to unload it because rent is due.

I said high cap vest in my post- but I meant assault vest... I think the leather is fewer slots than the high cap but more than (or at least as many as) the assault vest.

    How was your Day(Z)?

Thanks Dave... I've had some steaks I wanted to cook but haven't been able to. I admit I HATE going into those apartments so I avoid them altogether. I must have run around them to every other building three times. Go figure. ZH was home last night so he and I spawned back in by the NWAF. We were looking for some high cap vests and some gorka gear for him. I wanted my Paut-Rev Gorka ensemble as well... We already had more than enough in terms of weapons and ammo and I haven't fired a shot since that guy startled me in the server over a week ago. We'd come from the military base and found it surprisingly dry- definitely not worth the trip. We moved around the area with caution- as one naturally does whether there is 5 people in the server or 50. A LOT of boots- grabbed a sposn backpack and I think ZH found a high cap vest in the quonset at the tent camp on the north end. I did find a gorka jacket but that was promptly ruined by a single stealth zombie hit. Sigh. We went into just about every building we could find around the entire airfield... nothing. Figured we'd do a quick search around for crash sites since he'd never seen one and I've only ever seen the one from a few weeks ago with Schwab. We didn't go too far with it and headed back to the military base so I could track our way back home. I have a pretty easy to follow route that takes you from Berezino, along the HV lines that go to the west... through Novy / Stary Sobor... and then from the northern edge of Stary you catch a set of telephone lines that branches to the west and takes you straight to the base. From the base it's easy to shoot the gap between Vybor and Kabanino. To get home you just reverse the process and it's easy to do without a compass. It is a lot of running and ZH needed to take a break from it for a bit but I wanted to unload some of my stuff (I'd found a first aid kit, still had a pumpkin... and a deer pelt I wanted to use to make a high cap vest equivalent.) I kept the pumpkin for later and went back to do a quick run around the office building. Just as I was entering some movement caught my eye to the west outside of the mill. 1...3...4...6?! zombies running around after something. A couple days ago I'd seen the same thing happen with a cow taking up the pole position... I almost dismissed it thinking it was the same but in this instance I could see a blue drybag in the lead. He was on the run- weaving in and out of buildings and I wasn't sure if he had a weapon or not. I was leaning towards not. It was the first person I'd seen on the server and I wasn't going to let this guy get overtaken or beaten to death and lose out on my first interaction in 2 days. Out comes the trusty fire axe... I ran over to him- he'd made his way to a cluster of buildings across a field to the west and I gained on him quickly. As I watched he'd managed to get all the zombies into a group, pulled an axe and just started circling them and swinging like a madman. I got into chat range as one after another dropped and I realized that a guy dressed the way I was running at him with an axe pulled out was going to look a wee bit aggressive... so I slowed to a jog and started calling out over the direct chat. "Hey! Hey- I'm just coming to help... I'm coming in from towards the water. I have an axe drawn- looks like you're managing okay though." He ran around in a couple more circles and dropped the last two zombies before answering. "Oh- hi... Did you see that?! Like 5 or 6 of them." "Yeah it got my attention- thought you were going to need some help." "I saw them all chasing a cow and then they veered off after me. Are cows new to the game? I've never seen one before." We were keeping our distance from one another but the tone of the conversation was very relaxed. "They're not new- but they're also not all over the place. They are quite a few around Berezino- over by the construction site. Sometimes when they get chased they run through the city. On another note- you doing okay? I saw you took some hits... need any bandages or anything?" "I'm actually starving-" Pop goes the pumpkin. He stuffs his face into that and I told him about "Chez Eno." "If you need anything else I have a stash of food and other supplies that I can hand out and help get you on your way." He polished off the pumpkin. "Nah dude... all good here. Now I'm energized- and it shouldn't be too hard to find some more stuff." I got the SLIGHTEST sense that he thought I might have been luring him somewhere and if the roles were reversed I absolutely would have felt the same. Memories of being lead into the woods west of Berezino with ZH and two randoms to light a fire and warm up one of their characters come to mind. I didn't push the issue. "Okay- well you know where it is... if you need anything don't hesitate to come on by." Didn't see him again. I headed back to the "Farm" and got some things cleaned up around the green house. When you grow a lot of stuff you end up with an abundance of completely useless (currently) plant material and it ends up everywhere- looks awful. So I went about cleaning that up... had a full crop of pumpkins, zucchini and tomatoes... In the future that plant material can be used as fertilizer instead- which will be great. Now then... have to go back in this thread to where Krazy elaborates on crafting leather. (here it is: http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/210239-how-was-your-dayz/page-18)

    How was your Day(Z)?

I KIND of see what you're saying but on the other hand more often than not it's the dodgy compass that got me in that unfamiliar part of the map in the first place. If you don't have any way to confirm whether the compass is reading right or not... it could just get you deeper and deeper into trouble. Not being argumentative here at all- but I can think of a 2 hour walk to nowhere griefed by the compass... which is what eventually led to me throwing it away. I've never used one since.

    New player high ping problems

What exactly did you do to resolve the problem OP? Might be able to help others with the same issue...

    How was your Day(Z)?

I found compasses unreliable in .52 so I started weening myself off using them. In .53 the problem seems much more persistent so I'm glad I had stopped using them. Nice to keep that spot free for something else.

    How was your Day(Z)?

A couple days ago I was hanging around on Musty and met another player who had recently come back to the game. We had a good chat and decided we'd work together. I told him my buddy Schwab was inbound and to not worry since he is friendly as well. The three of us worked through Musty together but Schwab came in as a fresh spawn for some reason. Clorox and I were in Solnichniy while Schwab ended up eventually spawning in near the factory to the north. He was immediately confronted by a small group and headed south towards us. We heard the shots as we ran north to intercept but confusion occurred almost immediately. He was lucky and managed to elude the group south of Solnichniy while I worked to catch up- Clorox was closer to him and both were close to three valley by the time I met up with them and was able to pass on some food / water to Schwab. None of us had firearms at that point and were restricted to mid-range melee weapons. I had to leave early after heading inland with these guys. We were heading towards MSTA and eventually got there to explore making bows and arrows... doing a little crafting. I heard from Clorox the next day that they were running through a nearby field when the server crashed so there was no further drama there. We had also had a chance to get Clorox caught up in our normal server with Chez Eno. He spawned in just east of Elektro and made his way around the "horn" to head north up towards Berezino. Schwab and I ran down to meet him and handed over some gear to tie him over until we found better stuff. He looked a sight what with my UN helmet and extra pink raincoat I had for handing out. There was no drama as we worked our way to Chez Eno- but a server crash ended our time there that night. Last night Clorox and I met up and turned the lumber mill area east of Berezino upside down just looking for a cooking pot. We'd also looted Nizhnoye to no avail- NOT A SINGLE POT ANYWHERE> ARGH. And don't even get me started about people using their stove top as a storage space... Cans of food were everywhere on the stoves... but not a single pot. I could find 40 raincoats- a hundred wrenches... and chem sticks? Good grief... but not a single pot. /rant. Anyway he and I were relatively drama free except at one point he'd gone into the office space at the mill to look around. I had moved off to check some sheds for other things- there were 4-5 other people in the server so I didn't expect contact. Of course, you know the rules... for that very reason I then heard Clorox say, "Wait a minute- there's someone here!" "Where are you?" "In the office space." "I'm coming to you-" "The guy came at me with an axe but I backed off and pulled out the repeater. He then just said he was friendly and ran off towards the mill." I was around the corner from that and never did get eyes on the guy. It SEEMED like he was friendly... he did back off after all... but the fact he ran at Clorox in the first place made me want to get eyes on him just in case. Unfortunately (or fortunately) the guy never showed up again. The server pop dropped to next to nobody so we used that opportunity to run practically carefree through Berezino looking for a pot that remained elusive. We called it a night at Chez Eno and logged off. Looking forward to Zombi Hunter coming home tonight so the 4 of us can shake things up in musty! Edit: on an unrelated note... I had a dream last night that I found a press vest and was really stoked about putting it on and wearing it around my dream. Too much dayz perhaps?

I accidentally made my way here awhile ago- posted this pic at a time where we were around Novo as well and got turned around. I ended up putting that on my left and made it to the water. If you can take a picture of your current location and pertinent landmarks I'd like to try to help get you sorted out. You're near the area in the map that I stay in for the most part so I know it pretty well...

Industrial site near a cliff. If it's at the base of the cliff and there's a train track on top of the cliff and Alongside the industrial site you were likely at novo. This photo is from the wiki and shows the character looking roughly NE from between novo and cernaya polana. I'm not sure if you headed south west from North edge of map instead of west Edge (compass issue) but I think you're up in that top edge near dobroe perhaps?

    killing new spawns

They'll give you the excuse that you have nothing to lose- but that's trumped if you are actually trying to avoid them. Then they'll say they're bored. Unfortunately we all find fun in our own way. Mine would be to help you- others to hurt you. It's the game... if everyone were like me it'd be REALLY boring.

A lot of things that people are doing out there are wrong on a bunch of different levels- but right for what they're trying to get out of the game. Just filter it like you filter the ability to sprint across the entire country, grow plants in ten minutes and cure a broken bone with a morphine auto-injector.

    How was your Day(Z)?

Weird night last night on the Musty gaming server... but definitely par for this course! I'd had a character freshly spawned after getting killed in the last story with Schwab- I thought I was up north along the coast in Svet... in fact I was sure of it. Within 2 minutes of getting in game I stumbled into someone. I called out to them and they rushed over. I hadn't even had a chance to look over my inventory yet to see what I had onboard... "Eh there- how's it going?" I said cautiously. "Good- just gearing up. Need anything?" "To be honest I haven't even looked over my stuff yet- but..." I checked, "looks like I'm doing okay actually. Couple cans of pop and some spag." "Nice. Well here's some cereal anyway- just in case." Nice guy- thanks! We went our own ways. I put the coast on my left and started running to what I thought was Ber. Strange thing though- I could see these 4 apartment buildings off to my right... I remembered a scene like that from some of the youtube videos I'd watched from around Elek / Cherno. Sure enough after a little map study I realized I was in Elektro- not in Svet... that changed things pretty quickly and I instantly turned around and started making my way east with the intention of heading north. It wasn't long before I saw a shape standing still in the middle of the road. I assumed it was a zombie so I drew my pick axe. It then moved in a way that made me realize it wasn't a zed at all... I put my weapon away. "Come at me bro!" came the taunt over direct chat. "Stand down there- you were just standing still so I thought you were a zombie. I don't want any trouble." "Oh yeah? Well you found it-" He came over to me with his fists up and punched me in the face. "C'mon man- bring it on." Seriously? "Come on bitch... what's the matter- can't take out a fresh spawn?" "Not interested." "Okay well, I need you to kill me because I have things I need to do and I need another spawn... So why don't you just pull out that pick axe of yours and take me out." "I would have but you came at me so I'm not interested in helping you." I turned and started running down the road and he chased me... blabbing away the whole time. "Oh so you're going to be like that? Well that's okay... I can chase you forever- well, at least until I die of starvation or thirst. Come on man... you're actually going to make me chase after you?" Right then I knew there was nothing I could say that would annoy him more than making him chase me instead of just killing him... so I could effectively kill two birds with one stone. 1) Annoy him. 2) Get where I was going. "Ooooooooh, wait a minute... are you one of the guys I murdered in here, is that why you're not talking to me? I've murdered a lot of people in this server... Hold on, were you one of the guys with that chick? Well... I'm not sorry that I called her a bitch- a bitch just like you are being. You taking me to your friends? I hope so, so that I can kill you in front of them and tell them what a bitch ass you are..." Blah blah blah. You know- the part that is so disappointing about this is that we're not talking about some 11 year old squeaker... This was an adult. I tuned him out as I ran and eventually after about 15 seconds of silence I checked 6 and he was running off the road into a field. I ran up the coast a bit further, caught up on some sustenance and then continued on my way. Came into Kamyshovo and realized I was in very unfamiliar territory. Since the beginning I've been hanging out in the NE area a bit more- getting to know it really well so I could find my way around easily. Down here- I had no idea where I was and spent a bunch of it looking at the map. How hard could it be though- right? Coast on my right... keep that in line and I should be in Ber in no time- right? Well... right- But getting from point A to point B isn't just about walking a straight line... Sometimes a big part of the journey is in whether or not the area in between is contested or not and I'd never even HEARD of Kamyshovo. The fact that I heard multiple gunshots before I'd even reached the city limits was a telling indicator. I hugged the coast along the docks- dipping my toe into the town occasionally to check out some sheds in search of a better melee weapon. I had an ice axe as well as the pick- but I'd have traded my open can of spag and an hour of sexual favours for a fire axe at that moment. To my surprise other than some distant gunshots I didn't see anyone. I moved around to the eastern edge of town when it seemed I'd stumbled into a game of musical chairs and I was the last seat. I first heard a few shotgun blasts... more than 2 so I knew that was an MP133. A couple of quick rifle shots followed- probably an SKS. Alrighty- well I'll just give this place a miss. Except that I didn't want to turn my back and run into the open- I ducked into a bush and just stood in it... surprisingly well camouflaged. Then another guy with a dry bag ran past... followed by a fresh spawn. I was going to tell the fresh to hang back since things were a bit crazy but to be honest this was all very new to me and I totally forgot. More shooting... a couple guys could be seen running around the base of the large red house on the eastern edge of town... then another. More shooting- but for the life of me I couldn't figure out what was going on... who was who? I was perfectly content not knowing and stayed perfectly still. One last shot- and I noticed some glitching on the upstairs floor of the red house (or building... not sure what it was exactly). Looked like a bag was laying on the ground (it made sense that whomever it belonged to had been killed by that last shot) and another guy was visible running back and forth upstairs. I could see him through the windows and occasionally he would glitch and be visible through the wall. I waited a bit longer but things were quiet so time to didi out of there. Made it up the road about 2 minutes before I started hearing chatter on direct chat. I ducked out of sight and saw 2 guys coming up the road towards where I'd just left. I called out to them from cover to let them know that things were busy indeed up ahead but they didn't hear me. As I was trying to get their attention a fresh came sprinting up on me from the same direction. "Hello! Are you nice?" "Yes, I'm pretty nice." He had a hatchet in his hand. "But how about you just keep some distance for me, okay?" He did. "You doing okay? Need anything?" "Are you serious? You're not just going to kill me?" This was a younger player- young as in I'm not sure if it was a boy or a girl. "No, I don't play that way." "All anyone ever does in here is kill me or beat me up... thank you for being a nice guy. I'm very thirsty and hungry... I've been running a lot." I handed over my spag and some vegetables and a couple cans of pop. "Wow, you are very nice! Thank you thank you!" "Be careful if you're going through town up ahead... it's crazy up there right now- lots of shooting." We said our goodbyes and I kept going north. A minute after that another guy came running up the beach. "Hello there." We talked briefly and after doing a quick inventory I realized I didn't have anything left (in the way of food) to give. During the discussion he mentioned he'd just been killed in the "next town over" and was heading back in to get some payback. "Did that just happen like 10 minutes ago?" "Yeah- why, were you in on it?" Uh oh... abort! Abort! "I was hiding in a bush listening to it all go down- which is one reason why you've met me running away from there. Too crazy for me." He told me the story briefly and it seemed like a pretty traditional pvp encounter and he was going to get some revenge. "I don't have much to offer in terms of food but I do have some shotgun shells here and some bandages." He appreciated that and then dropped 9 pieces of netting... "Take it or leave it-" I asked how he'd managed to find so much so fast and he explained that he'd spawned in next to the little boats and it was just laying there. Fair enough, I'll take some! Another guy came up to us but gave us both a bit of a bad feeling so we broke off in our own directions. I did make it up to Solnichniy and met up with another survivor- had a brief conversation and he was very hungry. I only had a tomato left but I'd found some tools I needed to make a garden plot and grow some veg so I invited him to hang out while I got things started. He was very polite and declined but said he might be back. I got my garden going... eventually found some lime to speed things up and the guy came back over to check on things. We went about our business around each other for awhile... and right when my first crop of tomatoes was finished the server crashed.

You do need to have at least a worm in it... and be patient. But not too patient- if you wait too long the fish will be worked down to next to nothing. That whole watched pot never boils thing- Sometimes if it's been a real long time I'll just move it... like searching for stones- you don't ALWAYS find one!

    New to DayZ and PC

I concur with the mic thing- if you want to run around and get acquainted with the interface and some of the functions of the game then go ahead but if you don't have a mic configured at all you won't be able to see people direct texting you or hear them talking to you... I'm not sure if you want to call it a bug but having no mic will result in that- it's a common problem. As for a good mic- I recommend a headset so you don't have to lean over towards a boom... cheap boom mics are a bit restrictive. Tried one out and quickly changed to a headset with mic. I just got a cloud II that I'm anxious to try out!

I'm a bit of a stasher too... either fabbing up bags from sacs or even the small children's cases are good for a few items here and there. I'll distribute them around my operating area- never putting too much in one place so if someone stumbles into one I don't end up regretting it.

Question for you- I used to be able to prepare fish with the improvised knife but now it doesn't seem to be working. Do we now need a proper knife to do so or have you not seen any change? Perhaps it's an intermittent bug or the actual requirement for a knife changed... Thanks.
