    How was your Day(Z)?

Had a run in of our own last night... Schwab and I were working through Zelenogorsk on the tear looking for heli crash sites and having failed to find any decided to cut through to the military buildings to see if anything sexy was lingering around. There was one other guy on the server at the time... I wasn't too concerned about one person stumbling into us there of all places yet no matter how hard I try to dismiss the fact I mentioned it, you all know what's coming. We had cleared the buildings there but looking back at it now I should have taken a second look at the guard house. As I approached it I caught a glimpse of something in there that made me double take. Nothing clear nor obvious- just SOMETHING that made me look back at it, briefly scanned in the window and seeing nothing went back about my business. I double checked one of the barracks buildings that Schwab said he'd already looked through but I went in there anyway. We're looking for different things and sometimes if you're not looking for a specific thing you can overlook it. I was standing right in the middle of the barracks pondering the AK47 that was sitting there as well as the Kashtan scope I had attached to my own primary that is currently bugged (Schwab said there was a fix for that- anyone know where that's posted?) "Get on the ground- get on the fucking ground right now!" It took me WAY longer than it should have to realize that wasn't Schwab taking the direct route to the dark side. If I've learned one thing from unexpected encounters like this, it's that thumbing my voice button while trying to fumble through the next 10 words out of my mouth is time better spent mashing ASDW and DI DI'ing the fuck out of there. I didn't have any idea where the guy was- so at least as I scrambled out of the hot zone I might get a look at where he was and better assess the threat. I ducked out of the barracks building like a puck on an air hockey table driven by meth addicted baboons, just waiting to see the grey screen and hear the "UGH!" of eating a bullet or 30. The sound of gunfire drilled my ears but I just kept running... no snap so the guy must have been shooting for the stars. "How about YOU get down on the fucking ground!" I heard Schwab say over voice. He'd gotten the jump on this guy and either killed him outright or knocked him out. I was so fricken amped and relieved I just ran back over to his unconscious / dead body and shot him another 10 times. Just as I was doing my second quintuple tap I saw I was shooting into a coveted hunter's backpack I'd been looking for since .57. Meh... I rolled on a 3rd quintuple just to remove all doubt that I'd get any usefulness whatsoever out of any of the magic gear this guy was packing. I fired a few expletives into his head while I was at it. I felt like an abused spouse finally getting my revenge... I almost reloaded to keep shooting- man, I have issues. "There are 3 other guys in here now..." Schwab cautioned me as I decompressed. I fell back to a defensive position and scanned the area. "Did you just reload?" he asked me. "No-" "I just heard someone reload... I think these guys spawned in together." "I didn't hear anything." "Okay, well let's get out of here." And we did. As the buzz wore off I realized that this guy, whoever he was, may have tried to do it right. He hadn't taken a shot at me or KOS'd me... He was very assertive in his instructions, probably just trying to control the situation but it came off as very threatening. Hence why our reptilian brains kicked in- Schwab's went into fight mode while I went into flight mode. If the roles were reversed I might have tried calling out from a distance to let guys know I was there so I didn't make them feel ambushed. Or, I'd have just hidden until they left and exited stage "anywhere but here." Anyway- we weren't sure which guy it was... but if this story sounds familiar then I'm sorry it had to end that way.

    How was your Day(Z)?

A bit of a straw day for me last night... Came in to find out that one of our group had been kicked and his character reset- this the day after he took a wheel off a bus and it jumped up and landed on him. Literally jumped up in the air... it's old news by now as photos make their way around. So he's reset, runs all the way back west where I am able to pick him up in our offroad and we decide to go fix up a truck he's been putting together. Comb the countryside looking for pristine double wheels and finally he finds the last one. We go to put it on and the wheels are now damaged. And one is missing from before- hopper? Bug? No patience to find out. Back to a bus we found and put together awhile ago since it was stuck near our camp and we figured a little more effort might get it freed up. I'm not a huge fan of it but Dave likes it and it's got lots of storage to help us move stuff to our camp (or at least close to the camp- as getting stuck proved). I had to cut some trees down with my worn fire axe... I get through 3 trees and my axe is ruined. Over to a "nearby town" to find a replacement splitting axe... found one soon enough and head back to clear the trees. He gets in the bus and tries to start the engine... the fricken thing bucks again- launches the front into the air like a steed and then comes back to earth. Then he can't start the engine- I check the back end... plug and battery are ruined. Fuck sakes. Okay- we go back to camp in our offroad and grab a spare battery and plug that Dave fortunately had stashed and return to the bus. But we can't remove anything from the back of the bus... Fine- tried a couple different things but it appeared that perhaps it was the bus itself that was ruined. We took off all the good stuff (literally felt like we were about to pull insurance fraud) and hope it despawns. This takes us an hour so far so we finally decide to jump back in the offroad and go do something else- ANYTHING else just to get our minds off it. I think I was able to get into the car but the engine wouldn't start... Or it wouldn't let me get in the car- I can't recall. Anyway as it would turn out the battery and the plug in the car were ALSO ruined. We tapped out.

    The Current State of Dayz

Yes... more zombies in larger centers obviously but there are a few scattered throughout just about all towns. They're a little glitchy but ultimately something that you'd rather not have coming at you in large numbers from injuries and potential infections. Also ammo isn't AS available... something you need to stay on top of unless you're literally farming ammo. It's a good time to stick your toe back in the game.

    The Current State of Dayz

yeah our group walked away for the most part once .58 went stale- about a month into it. Everyone was just running around killing one another and the glitch hacking got ridiculous. No zombies was one thing originally I thought wasn't going to be a big deal but the difference they make in the numbers they're appearing in is tangible. Welcome back!

    How was your Day(Z)?

Just got word from our host (gameservers) that it's network issues on their end. Their Chicago based server in particular... I'm not mad now so much at least knowing what it is and knowing they're working on it. Still annoying but now we can work through it... Move the server... Wait it out... Whichever.

    Should I purchase DayZ: Standalone?

C'mon man- read. There are thousands of posts... start at 5 pages back in "how was your dayz" in this forum and work down from there. If you're one who likes to be spoonfed everything then this game is not for you. Or, better yet, you're not for it.
  8. eno

    How was your Day(Z)?

Yeah- we're getting that every hour or less. Fucking annoying... not sure who to be mad at.

    How was your Day(Z)?

Yuck... sounds very .58 like. Our server is getting a bit busier as people come back and try out.59. Had a good experience in there so far... but I'm still cautious. Shooting brings a hail of zombie attention which is good if it's someone else doing the shooting as you can then watch the z's converge. A bunch of aggravating glitches... 1 step forward 5 back sort of things that just get old in no time. But GENERALLY it's got me back into the groove of DayZ and I am enjoying it with my buddies.

    New UI?

I'm not going to waste my time with it- fps benefit or not. The guys I trust are saying its garbage so I'm just holding onto the old as long as I can. I'm not going to waste my time with junk.

I don't usually go to the busy pubs... usually in a bit of a moderate pop pub. It was in .58... It was SO creepy man... I'm just sitting there scoped in on something and then suddenly there's this head filling my scope. Holy gah!

    How was your Day(Z)?

Well... went back into Svet today and was just watching over the place when out of nowhere this fresh appears directly in my scope about 20 feet from me. Was very weird... I didn't shoot him- but suddenly he just zipped up into the sky and started taunting me. I ran away since I couldn't tell where he was... then I started getting shot until I was dead. I think that was my first actual hacker encounter...

    How was your Day(Z)?

Haven't been in game much lately so haven't contributed much in the past month or so. Finally got the gumption up to head into a busy server and see what everyone was up to. I tucked myself into a little corner overlooking the docks at Svet and kept pretty much to myself at the beginning. Saw a few random guys running around fresh- kind of fun watching people who were obviously new and enthusiastic mincing around, sneaking from cover to cover... looking at everything. I envied them and their fresh perspective as I lay there watching through my sniper scope. Of COURSE I didn't shoot the fresh guys... but I had my eyes open for people who do. One guy had some hunting clothes on and was just running around the docks in and out of the sheds. I watched him but left him alone. About 10 minutes later I saw a fresh female character running towards me with him in chase. I couldn't tell if they were together until I saw him trying to punch her and her running away. She ran up to the first platform on a crane and he went up after her. She punched him as he popped his head over the edge and he went back down. He then went and stood at the base of the crane and was looking up at her. She was looking down at him- I couldn't hear them but I'm assuming there was some chatter back and forth. He stood still long enough and I shot him in the throat- he collapsed immediately. Here I was thinking I'd just helped the woman- but I think it startled her and she fell off the crane and also died. Oops.

    Best Sniper Gear?

As mentioned earlier I do tend to lean towards damaged / badly damaged gear (paut rev gorka) since it does tend to blend in more while still providing protection from the elements. I prefer tan colours since they do seem to fit in with the general overlay on terrain you can see from a distance (ie: where grass / shrubs don't render anymore). Also love my ruined skull mask and green radar cap / toque. I'm trying a grey beanie out now to see if it blends in better. I run a stock colour gun wrap... tan gloves... lighter coloured combat boots if I can find them. I keep a modified backpack (lower profile) with a sawed off in it for close in stuff plus a worn plate carrier with gun slot for a FNX if I need something silenced. Loads of room for food and supplies while also some space for the essentials needed to support the group I was running with- saline IV kit / bandages / lock pick kit etc. I understand where the animosity towards snipers comes from and have probably subscribed to those stereotypes in the past at some point in time or another even if it wasn't really intentional. I think I was more valuable to the guys when I didn't fire a shot since shooting in busy areas is certain to get SOMEONES attention and there really aren't that many places to hide that aren't well known. Being able to call out folks for the running backs to go and deal with as necessary was much more fun anyway. Shooting is a lot of work and being a lazy guy I'd rather just stay whisper quiet and let them do the talking. The whole thing takes a boatload of patience... and I respect the guys who have it and apply it for (what I think are) the right reasons even though even the best may gravitate to the dark side every now and then.

Hanging out at the suicide jump off points to do this is something I've always wanted to do... might have to make a night of it.

    Relog/leg break mechanic/suicide

I went down this road as well since I was frustrated with people jumping to their deaths- and the most popular vote was gradually increasing spawn times. Another reasonably popular one was respawning automatically in the same spot if you died by falling within X amount of minutes- could even be a random number. Each one had it's supporters and detractors but let's be honest- you can never please everyone but generally those two solutions were the ones that came up the most.

    Status Report - 15 Oct 2015

I remain curious about the rather elaborate rail system that weaves throughout the world- I'd be amazed if it existed for only cosmetic purposes. Is this ever planned as a means of conveyance with those two person pump action cars or otherwise? I saw it mentioned awhile ago just at the community level but haven't heard anything about it since. I've always thought a "ghost train" (dead operator) that went around the rails along a set route would be a neat little concept but the challenge of explaining how it is fuelled without an ability to operate it continues to befuddle me. Jumping a train like a hobo and having to either fight for space or share it seems an intriguing concept. May not be on the radar but I am curious if there is any initiative to make rail transport at any level a possibility. I like the informal take on the update as well. I'm a fan of a more conversational transaction- makes them easier to write and often makes them a little more considerate of the audience. Deliver it like we're sitting in a pub having a beer- not like you're standing in front of a bunch of big wigs trying to impress us with a main course of bottom line lingo and tech jargon. Thanks to hicks (and the other devas-- that was an autocorrect that I found too funny to remove) for coming in and staying connected with the community. I don't always agree with the path chosen but I do appreciate the way it is communicated. I've liked listening to the interviews and reading the updates.

    Sudden death! Bug, presumably

Wow! Haven't seen anything that weird yet... We had one issue where a guy was unconscious and stood up to a crouch... Made one of the guys think it was the guy who killed him "and took all his stuff." Ended up shooting him... not sure if that was lag related or not... Just a weird event.

    Graphics settings

There are a few threads up already about optimizations and FPS enhancers etc... probably belongs in one of those. Thanks again!

    Graphics settings

Still an awesome post. I'm going to try that too. Is this reserved for low end systems or can there be benefit across a broad array of systems?

    How was your Day(Z)?

What I liked about the association is that we've obviously made it clear that we're not fans of killing folks... But we will. I have to admit in a similar scenario if you'd turned on us with a gun in your hand you may have caught a few but the chances are quite a bit lower than with a long. We've all been stung by "that guy" so trigger fingers get a bit itchy... but the guys work hard to give everyone a fighting chance. Funny though- the way you describe the encounter sounds like one we had recently at the NWAF... Bam was literally apologizing to the guy EXACTLY how you described it- Dave wouldn't have said anything, he'd have just shot you (he's usually in stealth mode) and Cold has been romping around ARMA3... And I know for a fact it wasn't me because your story didn't involve some moron shooting at you and missing... and you knocking him out in a fist fight as he shot at you point blank with a scoped Winchester. Yeah- times are tough on me in DayZ.

    How was your Day(Z)?

Don't think that's us pcs... we've had a few rumbles in north berezino but they're generally in town. One time we did get into an exchange in those woods was very memorable to me but we never killed anyone in that occasion. One of the other guys might remember so I may be wrong but I'm not sure it was us who killed ya. If you had a gun drawn at the time... there's a good chance you were rolling the dice. If your weapon was on your shoulder, I can almost guaranty it wasn't us.

    What's up with the loot?

If you're running around in one of the few high pop private shards then I can see where loot would be a bit of an issue. "looked through the whole map" is a pretty ambitious statement considering most of us are using food for toilet paper once we move inland.
