So true. Release the game out of Alpha after 5 years and then the following week they leave. Oh, just talk to your server providers and get them to do a bunch of shit they can't do to resolve the persistence stuff that we fucked up. Cheers. Pure awesomesauce.

Temporary Change to the Hosting Rules regarding Persistence Backups
eno replied to ImpulZ's topic in Servers
So our nightmare with gameservers continues- we had a wipe a couple days ago and wanted to restore. Had to file a ticket with gameservers to ask for them to restore a point for us. 10 hours later we get a reply that they could only do the backup from the last period otherwise the ticket needed to be elevated. Of course the 10 hour delay made it exceed the last backup so we needed to elevate the ticket. Fuck that nonsense. So we figured we’d dump gameservers early and try out host havoc. Got all set up with them for half the price and things seemed to be going well... except it turns out they only deal with private servers and from their own tech support doesn’t sound like they knew community public and official publics were different hives... and they only have private... so we had to dump that for an instant refund. All we want to do is run a community public- that will give us enough control to be able to restore the game on account of this ridiculous persistence issue. What a fucking nightmare. Anyway- gameservers and host havoc are out... can anyone make a solid recommendation for another one of the server providers that can provide reasonable support and some versatility?thanks. -
This. It seems to be random if you just "respawn" after being killed. Probably random if you go between public community to public official or between any privates.

It's true... I do like folks who tell the stories about what DayZ can do versus what any other shooter can do (and often does better). "I went to cherno... met a guy. Killed him. Then a guy killed me. I respawned. I went to Elektro. Met a guy. Killed him. Then a guy killed me. Respawned in Berezino. Met a guy. Killed him. Then a guy killed me. I respawned at Solnichny. Ran to Kami. Died. Respawned at Svet. Jumped off a crane. Died. Respawned in cherno... and repeat."

Some of you who have been around awhile will remember our little gang of anti-heroes called the Helpy Helpers. Well, we're trying to get the gang back together for some beach patrols along the east coast between about Krutoy Cap and the south end of Berezino. At least until we get our "game" back on and can start working the rougher parts of town... Our original mandate evolved from "All good, all the time" to "Mercy or Mayhem" on account of how it sucked to get killed every time we tried giving people the benefit of the doubt. Eventually, if you were new to the game and needed some help or some tips, then we'd gladly provide and if you wanted to be a shit pump then we were happy to oblige and mow you down like grass. Oh... and even when they're back in game do NOT approach DaveB with a fire extinguisher- even with good intentions. You've been warned. Now that we're gradually getting a few of our originals back on board I thought I'd reach out and see if there were some new creative ways of sitting people in the proverbial corner so they can think about what they've done. Imagine the following scenario: You and three friends are working the coast south of the factory between Sol and Nizhnoye and see a fresh spawn running down the beach towards you. He gets to about 50 feet from you and stops... probably didn't see you at first but now he does and he's not sure what to do. He stands still. "Hey there," you call out... all but one guy puts his weapons away. "Don't worry you're good with us... We won't do anything to ya." Silence. Your group approaches... keeping your feet moving since this could just be "freshie bait" for a team of snipers talking to this guy over third party comms. "Okay well you're not very talkative, that's for sure. Try Caps Lock to talk using voice or if you don't have a mic, just chat using the T key." A few seconds later you see the word "Hi can you see this?" pop up on the bottom left corner of your screen. "Well hello back friend. Are you new to the game?" "Yes." "Awwwwwwww that's so cuuuuuuuute," says one of your other guys. "Okay well tell you what... If you look at any DayZ map- just google one if you want- you are at Solnichny... middle of the east coast. You were headed north, towards Niznoye and Berezino... If you want, we can help you get some gear and food so you can head inland and explore to the west... how does that sound." "Really nice." "I like this guy," you say over 3rd party comms... "Me too," another says. "You just stick with us and we'll take care of you." "Okay." So you turn to the north and spread your group out in a diamond formation around your precious cargo. You make it to Nizhnoye and everything is nice and calm... you take the guy / girl / both / neither (c'mon let's not make it about that, okay) through a few buildings and grab some choice items. You take them to the fountain to top up some fluids and had a few cooked deer steaks to share. By some miracle you stumble into a burlap sac, make some rope out of a stack of 6 bandages your group assembles from left over pea coats and build a courier bag... then show them how to modify it using the stone knife in his inventory. "That's awesome thank you," pops up in the bottom left. "You're so polite! Are you Canadian by chance?" "Yes how'd you guess?" "Well your fantastic spelling for a start!" As you move out of Nizhnoye with your cargo fed, watered and geared up enough to survive the next 20 minutes thing start to turn. On third party comms one of your team calls out- "Contact, left. Single and geared. Long gun is out. Coming this way." "Rgr..." Your group heads over to the left but you forgot to include your freshie cargo so he has just blindly been running along the beach. He's alone... and exposed. "Shit..." "Hey! Buddy!" In game chat doesn't reach him. He keeps running. "The geared guy is running over to him... Gun still out." The four of you start sprinting in that direction but you all have a bad feeling you know what is going to happen next. As if on cue, immediately after the thought of it goes through your minds, the geared character stops, takes aim… and shoots your new friend in the face. He moves 10 steps towards your now deceased mute and looks like he’s working through the inventory… standing still. “Who’s your daddy, bitch? I’m the best player in the game and I’m legend.” Your group quickly surrounds him, weapons drawn. “That wasn’t very nice.” “Fuck y'all. I own 3rd grade! Read about me in the forums.” “Hmmm, go ahead and put that weapon down.” “No! I’ll kill all of-“ A shot to the legs knocks the guy down… and another shot quickly leads to unconsciousness. “Quick, cuff him and bandage him. Keep him alive.” Your crew, a finely oiled machine by this point after about 10000 hours between you, is ready for the task. “What time is it?” “2:31pm.” “Go figure,” someone scoffs. The survivor regains consciousness in a couple seconds. “What- why didn’t ya just kill me? I want to respawn... gotta build up my kill count.” “Oh man… there is no fucking way we’re going to make it that easy.” If we got extremely lucky our mute friend would spawn in the immediate area and he could cut his old body up and force feed it to the survivor. Alternatively we could take a blood bag off his new body and see if the ol’ wrong blood transfusion still worked. So now…You’ve got a guy who, for whatever reason, just needs to go out in the longest, most frustrating, most creative way ever. Aaaaaaand Go:
-
Yeah that doesn't sound very inspiring...
-
Yikes- that's a new one. Sorry to hear about the crappy ending- but sounds like you really enjoyed the other 99%. We're all dealing with issues in the game- some more severe than others... but many are still playing through it since there are a couple of niche things in game that only DayZ seems to be able to do even in its broken state. I think you should give it another go... take another route this time.

Returning DayZ(mod) veteran, impressions on 1.0
eno replied to DenverDeCoY1's topic in General Discussion
Funny you say that... Other than run around and criticize what everyone says in here for fear that a dev might get scratched- do you actually help anyone? I mean... Do you even play the game? -
Though I am a bit rough in my assessments of the game, devs and the blindly optimistic I'm out there putting some time in trying to get my head around what is impacted so that I can help others (and myself) where possible. I'm doing my research but a lot of the findings are from pre 1.0 and suffice to say there is very little relevance. We maintain a low pop pub server and have a few little caches of equipment in a combination of barrels, sea chests and tents... Most are reasonably well hidden. Well- they WERE reasonably well hidden. Over the last couple nights I've noticed these items disappearing- specifically barrels and the sea chest. It's not unreasonable to suggest someone stumbled into each stash and just took it for themselves... which was the presumption until last night when I stumbled into the very first (and only) military tent I'd found since we started the server a couple weeks ago. It was conspicuously placed on the east side of the Balota base- in the immediate vicinity of the military spawn sites and out in the open. Still empty- but absolutely ripe for taking. Walk for 2 minutes in almost any direction and it would be hidden in a better place. I left it there at the time thinking vehicles would be a little easier to assemble and wanted to make it easy to find for other members of our group. A vehicle tent we'd found in the beginning and moved a few days back also seems to have withstood the test of time- which makes sense since we see very few people in our server. It's a little better hidden but still a valuable target. Meanwhile the barrels and chest were stashed inconspicuously off any beaten path (not meaning actual paths- I mean right out of any normal line between popular locations) and have all disappeared. So the more I play the more I'm thinking that barrels are getting wiped with regularity while tents may be less vulnerable. Bodies and the gear associated to them seem to last about 15 minutes or so... is that accurate? I know it's not worth investing time in bases but was hoping that simple barrels, tents etc. would be okay. What has your experience been with barrels / tents / sea chests? Are those also proving to be no-go items?

Seek out the helpy helpers community server. We try to cater to those who are newer to the game. We don’t pick on those who are new... we try to help them out. Look me up on steam maybe we can help you get accustomed to the game.

I’d find a field backpack if I wanted to gather a bunch of stuff but really right now I’d hold bare minimum stuff and just stay topped up.

It's probably just a correlation / causation problem but over the last few sessions I've noticed that items seem to spawn in discernible waves. For the last couple sessions I could have picked up a tactical vest for every red shirt who has ever been killed in a Star Trek episode or movie... Last night I looked through Balota, Pavlovo, Zel, Sasnovka, NWAF and Stary and didn't find a single vest... neither did my buddy. Same server. I know it's not because our vast player base of literally 3 people on average this month vacuumed up all the vests... I get it- it's not all supposed to be spoon fed to us but does the CLE just click over to a chamber filled with Pea coats and blast the world with them, then click over to a chamber filled with FNX mags, then bomber jackets... then yellow protector cases... then back to Pea coats... then roosters... Fucking roosters. Or is it continuously just randomly respawning loot and my findings are irregular? I remember there were always items that were hard to find... but they were ALWAYS hard to find. Now it seems that things come in waves- Have you experienced this lobsided loot distribution? Is this the way of the future or an anomaly?
-
All are currently vulnerable... We've got the same issue on the PC Side of the fence... Suffice to say if you're making bases just to play around with it then go for it. If you're making bases with the intention of saving anything... I wouldn't.

Working through our Helpy Helpers server we stumbled into a few regulars who added Bam on Steam- one guy in particular was messaging Bam and sounded like he was okay. He was working around Cherno and we were passing through... We wanted to avoid each other to prevent any accidents. I subsequently added the main guy to Steam and reached out to him the next time I saw him on the server. I was back on the server transitioning Cherno and there were a few other people onboard. I recognized the names and thought they may be part of the group we'd interacted with before. I reached out to the main guy (B) and asked him where they were working to try and deconflict. Guys were out base building and he was working Cherno... and he had the tan cap and pistol suppressor that Bam was looking for. I was coming back from Balota and transitioning over toward Krutoy Cap so we arranged to meet at a position near where he said he was. Everything Bam told me about this guy was good- but there was a little tingle in my face about the potential that this was just one big screw waiting to happen. I approached the area we'd agreed upon carefully but this guy just came running over quite nonchalantly. I waved to him and he came over and talked very briefly. He handed over the goods and I promptly got kicked off the server AND out of Steam. It was a system issue on my side so I got reconnected as quickly as I could but by the time I got back in B was gone. "You dipped pretty quickly man," B had said in Steam- probably thinking I'd just grabbed the stuff and bounced to another server. I explained I'd had network issues (over steam chat) and apologized for being rude. His next text was: "I need help now." I knew generally where he was working since he'd shared it with me on a map earlier so I immediately started to head towards that location. We didn't have voice... so I had no idea what was going on but I wanted to help- no matter what it was. Did he get ambushed? Was he overwhelmed by Zs? No clue. I ran around the area but couldn't find him... ducked into some cover and reached out: "What happened? Where are you?" "I fell off a ladder and died- can you grab my stuff off my body? Hoping to spawn nearby..." Okay so I had a little more time but still had no idea where he was. He gave me a general location and I was running around that spot looking- but could find nothing. It had been a couple minutes since he'd died... I knew I had longer than that- so where was he? I looked at the base of any ladder I could find, thinking I'd see a geared up body laying sprawled out in the sun... Nope. But then I looked at this one really, really tall ladder again- there was a single boot visible. I looked closer- there was a camo leg and a combat knife... Then a wall. His character fell off the ladder, landed and then glitched through the wall of the adjacent building. I tried everything to view his inventory- no luck at all. Before long he trotted up to try a few things... but none of his bag of tricks worked either. "Can I give you anything to make gearing up a little easier?" "Nah man, it's Cherno. Cherno's easy. Just keep your eye open for a camo balaclava for me, will ya? Those are harder to find." "Will do."

It is actually. Holidays are a privilege not an entitlement. DayZ launches in October? Great... everyone is on holidays. DayZ launches on the 13th of December? Sorry folks you're taking off early or you're taking off late but we're working through Christmas. This isn't a fucking Christmas Carol. It's business. 5 years they spent stumbling from one excuse to the next... every fucking year after year... And they decide to do their "EPIC 1.0 RELEASE" 10 days before Christmas instead of 10 days after. Why did we NEED DayZ 1.0 on the 13th? Why did we even need an update? Why? Because of the cash influx they'd expect around Christmas. There is NO other reason... literally none. And that's fine- businesses are supposed to make money and I'm sure they did but this was a near sighted and optimistic play on their part and the player base is pissed. All the player base would expect is that someone stayed at the helm to weather the inevitable storms of a release of this nature.

Food and water etc. don't immediately register on the level indicator- however you can see their "progress" with the ^ marks (up or down). ie: You could drink a whole canteen / bottle / handful and you could see 2 or 3 ^ stacked on top of one another for a few minutes. Gradually that indicator will continue heading in that direction until it "runs out" and you start working your way down again. I find the liquids go down a lot faster than the foods... not sure if the TYPE of food matters or not... I don't think the mechanics go that far into it. As for vehicles- not going to lie... that is an exercise in futility at this point. I'm not going to say "don't do it" since it's A LOT easier to get around the map in a vehicle... sort of. It takes hours to assemble a vehicle (when you don't know your way around the map) and the result, if you don't build the vehicle properly or miss a step, could literally be death. Personally I always reflect back on something someone in here said to me when I was new: "Enjoy being lost." I didn't get it then but I do now. Get lost... be confused... interact with people- get killed. Be tricked... Be dismayed... Learn... Adapt... Develop. If you get hopelessly turned around and need some guidance reach out! I've always enjoyed the "where am I" thread from a long time ago... (going to have to get that going again...) where you could post a screenshot of your location (usually as a spawn) and someone would help get you started. It was also a bit of a competition to see if guys could figure out certain landmarks etc... anyway. I'm happy to help you with that if you get hung up... just reach out to me. But for now let's try and get you and your friends together. If you could get images from all of them and yourself posted in this thread, we could probably help you get together faster... then you can head inland and explore together- which is the most fun this game has to offer.

Thanks Scipioll! We're having a good time but haven't had a lot of opportunity to interact with the world... I haven't gone so far as to try and bust someone up but I'm sure someone out there can confirm that legs can in fact be broken... I jumped off a crane the other day and that resulted in me hobbling around but no broken limbs. I'm going to assume I'd have no more luck with a hammer but maybe someone else knows the trick? The objective, of course is to be able to prolong the negative experience for those who deserve it... and short of breaking legs and putting a bag over someones head (wait a second, that sounds like playing at night with a full inventory! jk) like we used to be able to (though burlap isn't exactly like pea coats right now) I'm not sure how to restrict movement? Anyone got any ideas? What's worked for you?

Now balancing out darkness at night in the same way that EVERY other feature in the game is balanced out for the sake of the game is ruining the vanilla experience. Holy fuck dude, pump the brakes.
-
Seems military loot takes longer than civ loot. I was trying to get some gardening supplies last night and found that spawn time was very fast- like a couple minutes or less- but still cycled very, very obviously. Denim shorts to Capri pants to those trail shoes... thin glasses at one point. Its not a big deal- but it seems off. Not sure if it’s a bug though.
-
And for those seeking such thrills in their gaming time DayZ at night is the perfect match. For the rest of us, a little balancing would be nice.
-
More like 15 minutes now. But yes.
-
Yeah... I was loot spawning around Balota tonight trying to get a black assault pack. Went through a cycle of finding nothing but rail attachments for M4s as well as a variety of mags for Mp5ks and FNXs... A metric fuck ton of .45ACP... and hunter boots. Cleared all those out- had a couple of polymer attachments mixed in. Went back... then it was field vest mayhem (where was that a couple days ago) where I found at least a half a dozen... then it was glow sticks- in almost every spawn location. Then every variety of camo pant / jacket... CCU... so many bomber jackets. Then a volley of officer hats. 45ACP seems to be a constant... packaged... mags... I mean I guess it can really only spawn so much stuff right now since they've pulled so much out of the game... but does it have to be this linear? Not sure.

The roosters replaced the slamming gate effect pre 1.0

I noticed the same thing... Probably just another bug to throw on the proverbial pile. I've since learned you can still drink from it even when it's hot... too... so other than keeping your character really warm (that doesn't seem to result in anything either, come to think of it) it's not too big a deal.
