Who actually build bases and repair cars?

We are building right now and have "A" car... there are a few (6) of us involved so base building was more of an experiment and we found the car (completed) hidden in a small town barn... With that said- I empathize with the frustration. Bases are too hard to build and too easy to destroy or be picked through... They're finicky to build to an obnoxious degree while raiding them is all about having a tool and a roll of duct tape. Those on the periphery of the game likely figure persistence is a crash away from wiping away hours of otherwise thankless effort. It will let you build sections that won't play well with one another... It risks being a colossal waste of time. A person can run from the coast to Tisy, hop servers and be fully geared to the satisfaction of a large percentage of the player base and back to the coast in about 3 hours. It takes half a dozen people 3 hours just to find 6 boxes of nails... And at least that much or more to get a car built and keep it on the greasy side. Meanwhile car parts are so far apart, bulky to carry and cars regularly spawn in with next to nothing... they take a long time to build and when found contrarians simply shoot them a few times, ruin them and cause them to despawn. Driving them anywhere still runs an element of risk that many aren't ready to take... There are exceptions- guys like @Parazight have a unique awareness about the limitations of driving and work within them but the average player only knows of the "get in, die" problems that still occur as far as I know. I wouldn't want to try to build a car as a fresh spawn... which is the time where a person is most likely to accept risk. I did run into the beginning of a base last night in my travels and the place was actually pretty well located from a detection standpoint but inconvenient from a resource standpoint... finding nails is extremely tedious and their base is proximal to the same industrial areas as ours- so we're out vacuuming up each other's nails. I'll be watching this little base shape up (it was just a fence kit and the logs needed to dig in)... but I doubt it will. I suspect the person will get bored with it and move on. It's not an easy problem to solve... it's a game environment that is difficult to balance but I hope constructive feedback helps the dev team polish the cannonball to a point where the largest cross section of players can see their reflection in it.

    Stable Update 1.0150627

I bug reported it and it got classified as a duplicate so it’s in the system.
  3. I find stuffed bears all over the place... each one basically filled with a piece of paper that I can do next to nothing with. Actually, come to think of it... I don't think I can even do next to nothing- pretty much nothing. They're cute and all... but can we get them filled with something we can actually use- or better yet can we get pens back?

    Play as infected

A few of us were talking about this the other day... about the "official" back story on why you wash up on the coast in the first place... The assumption on my end has always been that we're a member of the crew of one of the shipwrecks and there was a big storm at sea- and we wash ashore. But is there some other story behind the "immunity" or do we just choose the path of our own DayZ prequel?

    How was your Day(Z)?

We had to take our blue armbands off the last couple of nights and I apologize to anyone who got caught up in the Helper Skelter Mayhem. Freshie death matches between strangers at midnight in a ring of locked doors and a road flare introduced us to the macabre sensuality of the unbridled randomness in the game... Our group did some horrible things, but the game rendered it all beautifully. Such a paradoxical experience... For our sins: Fortunately, we're still predominantly a force for good- and good things ARE still happening. Though we're not interested in just rolling with random strangers we're not afraid to escort them to the water well and provide them with some supplies... not that it's hard to survive but for people who are literally just "unboxing" the game for the first time we still like to preserve the illusion that it is hard. In hindsight and I've said this before, my favourite time in the game was also the most frustrating... the time I was lost with no bearings and literally just struggling to function. That initial sense of hopelessness springboarded me through the past 2000+ hours of playing the game... so it seems that through the chaos of DayZ development the Devs did, in fact, reel a few of us in. So we try, in part, to recreate that for those we encounter. It can be fun sometimes- if we let it be. I have still encountered a few people over the past few sessions who were happy to KoS... a couple had a weird similarity and I'm curious if anyone else has noticed this: A guy dressed all in red- with a red motorcycle helmet on as well- had been involved in some exchange of gunfire earlier... I'd watched him from cover and he was up to something but it was hard to tell what. A bit later I noticed him again working his way towards the docks in Svet where I was. I was in a full blue "soft" motif going with a blue tracksuit and blue beanie and a blue drybag- with white converse high tops. The blue drybag had a SDK-5 and an FX... so I was ready for a fight but had hoped for something a bit more spontaneous. I wasn't sure if he saw me at first but as I tried to find cover again he kept tracking on me... I wanted to buy some time but as I ducked and weaved around I agro'd a zombie... which under routine circumstances is no big deal. Draw the knife, pull back in a defense position... let the zob take 2 swipes then attack rapidly until it "dies." I lock horns with the zob this time and it's taking more time than usual to get it down- which is fine. But as I'm doing it the guy in red comes around the corner and is standing off at a distance... like 20 feet away. I see him making punching movements- but I don't see anything in his hands. You are dead. A couple days later I'm jogging down the street looking for someone spotted by our overwatch... unsure of him since I'd heard he had gear, longs on his back and a motorcycle helmet on. I'm baiting as a fresh-ish again with my stock clothing, shoes... but with a civilian bag (which of course can mean anything) and not being sneaky. I'm just out running in the middle of the street looking for this dude to try and make contact and figure out his intentions. I ran past one of the open workshops in the row houses across from the police station when I see a dude standing inside who fit the description of the guy I was looking for. He starts making punching motions similar to the last guy- so I just think he's just motioning for me to carry on and he doesn't want to talk. Except while he's doing the punching motion bullets are cracking past me... One of our gunfighters eventually chopped him up. Maybe I was just seeing things but it struck me as extremely weird to have such similar occurrences- appearing to just be guys punching the air but yet result in getting shot at. Anyone else see anything like that and just write it off as an illusion?

None of us could make them work either. There were 5 of us trying. I’d verified my files beforehand not sure of the others.

    So... we agree. "Practically nothing."

    Teddy bear picnic...

Still practically nothing since I can also use rags- plus I don't need to light a fire for anything since I don't think we can yet die of cold nor eating raw meat.
  11. Had an interesting thing happen last night on a Helper Skelter session... On one particular occasion a player acted out and ended up being fed the green wiener... but didn't die. At least- we didn't think he had been and it caused a ripple effect that almost got a few of us killed. The player in question had been shot a couple times out of my view as I was rushing over to help in case it was needed. As I came around the corner I saw the player in question (with a motorcycle helmet on, go figure) limping away with a long weapon in hand. I hit my 3 key and fired a couple rounds into him as he headed for cover. I hit him a couple of times but he still managed to keep going- which was okay since I was planning on getting him as he tried to open a nearby door. But he didn't go for the door- instead he headed in a straight line right through a wall to the building in front of him. Two of us saw him glitch through the wall and headed around to the front of the building to finish him off. We picked him up on the other side- I fired a couple more rounds only to see the character keep running and through yet another wall out of sight. In the meantime I'd pretty much agro'd every zombie in Svet... we were on a full server and there was gunfire all over the place. Subsequent to that I ran into a fresh spawn who couldn't use a mic so I'm trying to get them to steer clear but they wanted to stay... which was a bit suspicious but I didn't have time to talk them out of it. I was being chased by zobs and didn't want to get killed like I had been the last time I was swinging at zobs and a player standing back watching me shot me in the head. Anyway the entire situation devolved into us fighting for our lives against zobs while trying to minimize the use of guns. We got through it eventually but as I came clear and around a corner I saw the same person we'd shot countless times limping up against a ledge... I idiotically shot them a few more times for good measure and they just kept limping against the wall. More zombies would agro and keep me busy for the next few minutes. Anyone ever encountered this glitch before? Any idea what caused it? This is taken after I'd fired a couple more rounds to no effect.

    Any update on Notes returning?

Very curious about this too... The problem with them before was they didn't last very long... so you could leave one and it would basically evaporate or not be visible to the next person anyway. Definitely should be something that can stand the test of time.

Are they tall enough to put a radio in? Now that might be a worthwhile application for both things.
  16. "This server has tons of mods." Don't get me wrong I understand your angle and respect your passionate disposition but I'm not sure lumping results from a server with any mods (nevermind tons of mods) with progress on vanilla experimental servers is a winning stratagem.

    How was your Day(Z)?

Later yesterday in a separate session we got BAM- one of our original members- back from his vacation and he was working around Novo when he found a large truck garage with locked doors and a military tent on the inside. He didn't have a lock pick kit and was hesitant to start banging away on the door without backup so I headed to him directly. He covered me as I made my way to one of the doors and used a lock pick kit to gain entry. There was a single military tent with a camo net so I went in to take a look around and see what sort of spoils we could plunder. I was in my light character with large backpack with loads of storage for almost anything... A car door, a couple of cord reels and some other utterly useless items occupied the top spaces- but I'm no dummy... I know how much can be held at the very bottom several scrolls down and out of sight... Some forget to look waaaaaaaaaaaaay down there. Nothing. "I'm tempted to grab the tent but I don't think we can run and carry the military tent... I'm hesitant to try and steal this now on a full server." "Fuck." "But we do need the camo netting for our own base so..." I helped myself to that, headed back out and locked the door behind me. I then headed up the hill to the north and parked near a tree. I saw BAM crouched beside the building which was a bit disorienting to me since only moments before he'd been providing cover from a nearby wall. He's always messing around so I figured he was just checking something else out through the window. Then he shot at me... missing by a couple feet. Then again- still missing. I laughed out a little at first thinking he was just trying to keep me on my toes. "Ha- you couldn't hit me if you tried." "That's not me shooting at you!" "Holy fuck!" The 4th or 5th shot hit me just as I started to sniper shuffle down the hill to cover. As I was running from my perch I could see BAM hustling towards the gunfire with his weapon up. It's always awesome having him around since he let's his balls do the talking and I just help him get geared up after. Zombies agro'd on BAM but they also agro'd on the other dude. He'd apparently taken shelter in his base where we had him surrounded. By the time I'd snuck over to a door and unlocked it to rush him with BAM he'd combat logged. We figured we'd have about 3 minutes before he ghosted us so we left and headed over towards Svet. Once in Svet we looked around for nails and other helpful items- finding none. At some point BAM agro'd a few zobs near the church in the middle of town and he took shelter inside. I ran over to take on one that was at the door and managed to stab it in the solar plexus a few times. It went down and I stood over it to check its inventory when I was hit at LEAST once by a bullet... I immediately started my shuffle to cover but had no idea where the shot originated. I was bleeding badly and retreated to the double red behind the church. I was pretty sure the shot had come from the west so I felt reasonably safe not locking the door after I went inside. I was unable to track any zobs running to the gunfire. "My guy is glitching... I can't interact with anything. I'm going to log out and come back." "I'm healing... I can hear a guy reloading." I could hear zobs below me but I wasn't putting together that the guy was in the back of the church with the door now closed so the zobs were just tracking him through the building (which is stupid, btw.) "I don't know if I'd log back in on this server with this guy nearby... probably just leave it alone." "Already coming back." "Okay... is that you reloading?" "Yeah I'm back and reloading." "Did you just rack your weapon?" "No." "Is that you reloading again?" "Yes." "What about now?" "No... that's him." "Holy fuck." So confused since the sounds were coming from the exact same place. Suddenly there was a burst of about 20 shots in full auto- "I got him! He was right here just behind me the whole time!" I raced around the corner and into the church to see BAM standing beside the guy he shot... I was about 20 feet away when suddenly the guy started moving to stand up with a weapon in his hand. A couple more shots and the guy rag dolled this time. "Oh yeah," I said as I looked through the guy's gear, "I forgot to tell you that in this latest patch people can be knocked unconscious and don't always die." "Thanks tips." The guy had lots of gear but mostly things of little consequence... I took a can opener- And a thigh bone to feed to him later.

    How was your Day(Z)?

The Helpy Helpers has welcomed a couple new members to the group so we've spent the last few nights getting acquainted and learning the ins and outs of base building. I've commented on how that process is coming along in a couple different threads but suffice to say many hands still don't make light work. I couldn't imagine trying to build a base on an official server single handed... just trying to get the nails has been an enormous turn off. I'm ready to offer an SVD for 10 boxes of nails. Actually... might not be a bad idea. I'll have to think about that. Anyway- in addition to working on the base (all your base, your base, your base... all your base are belong to us) we've had a few interesting encounters... well, interesting to me. Starting yesterday morning I was going to meet a new member we'll call 850. He is brand new to the game and the entire brand so to start with we needed to figure out where he was on the map. On one hand I just wanted him to screen shot and share with me or I'd just look over his shoulder through steam- but I wanted him to be lost for a little while. He was killed a couple times by zobs and I sensed he was getting a bit annoyed by that so I helped figure out that he was actually quite close to me. I started making my way into Berezino near one of the guard shacks when I heard some footsteps on the other side of a wall. The guy that came around the corner was tac'ed out with assault helmet and visor, high cap vest and some fancy pants- and he had the skull balaclava on which on normal occasions is intimidating but with the assault helmet on it looks like the player is wearing a ball gag. I saw that once and have never been able to wipe that from memory... every time I see the combination I can't take it seriously anymore. Anyway- besides that I was standing there looking at a pretty heavy character who had more than enough hardware on his shoulders to chop me into little bits and feed me to 850. I kept my distance. He kept his distance. "I don't want any trouble," I said. "I'll keep back from you. I'm just going to meet up with my buddy." "Okay. Do you need anything?" "No man, I'm good." I'm dressed as a shaved fresh spawn... stock clothing, stock shoes... I have a beanie and a relatively common civilian backpack and carry everything internally to minimize the perceived risk- but I have some tricks up my sleeve and I kind of wanted this guy's high cap vest. My finger was tickling the "3" key... and my mind was formulating the muscle twitches needed to draw the weapon, focus it on him and shoot him in the face 14 times to save me from having to travel up to Tisy to get my own. But that's not who I am... First of all I'm quite certain given my track record that 13 of those 14 rounds would have gone into the vest and ruined it while the 1 left over probably would have hit 850 somehow and killed him. Then I would have felt terrible that this lone guy- literally the only other guy on the server- had trusted me enough to not even pull a weapon... he offered me supplies thinking I was new. I couldn't possibly do it. I'd feel shit and not very helpy helpery. We go "Helper Skelter" sometimes to keep our skills up but this isn't one of those times. I thanked the guy and we wished each other good luck. 850 was working his way past the lumber mill and agro'd a zob or 2... then it was 4. "I'm in trouble!" he reported over discord. "I don't think I'm going to make it..." "I am right around the corner- I'm coming!" I could hear the zobs in the batting cage just around the corner along the main road... I was running and running- I came around the corner and could see 850 dancing and weaving until finally he'd had enough and dropped onto the ground to do the posturepedic polka complete with a zob cheering section. "I'm dead-" 850 sighed deeply... but I kept running forwards- getting ready with my 3 key again. "Dead or just unconscious... I can revive you!" "No it says 'You are dead' on the screen." "Fuck." Of course in running towards him I'd agro'd a zombie or two which again got the attention of those now hovering over 850's corpse. My endurance indicator was dried up from the run over and now I had some work cut out for me. I was going to learn how to bleed... a lot. I contemplated pulling my .45 but hesitated... a whisper in the back of my mind reminded me that the other character was nearby and if went loud there was a good chance the next time we talked would be a little more one sided. I managed to duck into a shed with a single zob... which I was able to manage with a few quick swipes of a kitchen knife. Zombies all around me were agro'd and I knew I was running out of alternatives to trying let them in one at a time to zob mash them or maybe try and wait them out... I was admiring the 20th splitting axe I'd seen in the last 5 minutes when I started hearing the distinctive sound of a melee weapon being united with teeth and ribs... "I got them!" someone said... "Just stay in there!" Ball gag (sorry, I just can't not see it anymore) had arrived to save the day- I stepped out the opposite side of the shed to see him waving a weapon of some sort (probably a splitting axe of course) like a purebread mercenary... he got rid of most of them and I took one with my knife. I was very careful to keep my distance from him for fear of striking him by accident... and with my weapon pulled I knew I'd be a threat to him so I immediately backed away from him and put my weapon away. "Thanks man... that's my dead buddy on the road there so I guess he's back on the coast." Silence was his reply. I stammered on, "Oh yeah... I guess we're already on the coast so... I guess uh... he's just somewhere else on the coast?" He turned and trotted off and back out of sight...

    Stable Update 1.01

Our group has spent the last few days focusing on building a small base and the experience has been mixed. Necessary tools were a little hard to find with regularity but seemed to become almost over abundant by the time we didn't need them anymore. This seemed to fit with the overall loot cycling where this day it was a million pickaxes and the next day was a million splitting axes etc. All good except that those were the two days we were looking for sledgehammers. We got into some corners where the game wouldn't let us build top or bottom... or both which required dismantling entire sections and that proved to be a pain in the ass since in some cases you could dismantle but others you needed to demolish- which took its toll on tools. On the plus side it'll take its toll on the tools of those who are raiding... on the negative side... well... Anyway. Stacks of boards, chopping trees down for logs etc was okay but stacking boards for carrying seems a bit off... it's tough to stack them for carrying. I think you're supposed to be able to carry twenty... but you need to start fussing after 10. Put the 10 down, pick up 3 and then pair the 10 with the 3... put it down again... maybe I'm just not doing it right. And nails are obnoxiously rare... which has been extremely frustrating especially at this early juncture where people are going to be experimenting with base building. A person would get excited about getting something started and have to go to several corners of the map to find enough nails to build anything, lose interest and go kill someone instead. My vote is for a slight bump up in the nails spawn... do we REALLY need more fucking peat coats than we do boxes of nails? Thank god I found another pair of denim shorts and a tracksuit jacket... but for every 10 of those can we get one box of nails? Can I craft 20 hardhats into a large box of nails? If I go into an industrial district I should come out with enough nails to get some work done... Overall I think the experience has been gratifying to a point but senselessly prolonged. Is there a reason to limit the ability to build to this point? If you're worried about people building bases everywhere I'm sure a few players per server with some sledgehammers will remedy that problem for you whether you like it or not...
