Excellent article by Eurogamer - Must read
philbur replied to QUAZIMOFO's topic in General Discussion
Thanks for clarifying the statistics. I hope others are as interested in keeping proper perspectives when it come to interpreting statistics because it is all too common to see people with a specific agenda picking and choosing bits of data from a larger sample and then using it to reinforce their flawed logic. -
Well...he didn't say he was using his own server as a loot farm for his escapades on other ones...but you would be right if he was. The three states of New Spawn, Gearing Up, and Fully Geared are interestingly similar with me, though...but if/when I get to the Fully Geared state and boredom is looming I then take a different approach and I go looking for trouble instead. I go to high-risk areas and see if I can stalk KOSers or Clan-Boys. Sometimes I am rewarded with righteous PVP action or at least New Spawn rescues...and sometimes I just end up being a Gear Donor. :-p So far, the progression though these states has been enough to keep me coming back for more and as long as I don't find myself getting angry at that "You are Dead" black screen of ridicule I consider the time well spent.

On the extremely unlikely chance that Loot has now suddenly become "broken as fuck" I jumped in to see for myself. The only thing worthy of being called "broken" is your own poor little heart, my man. You have had the mis-fortune to have maybe had a run of poor lot distribution from the CLE. As it appears to me right now, my chances of finding the average varieties of loot (both military and civilian) have not changed a single bit over the last few weeks. I know it has become quite stagnant in these forums as we all hopelessly await the new build....but have some patience and extend them the regular amount of courtesy we all afford the dev team as they struggle to finally stabilize the CLE.

1st person perspective only (Message to devs)
philbur replied to cs_wolf's topic in General Discussion
Unpopular might be the wrong word here.... I think you need to consider what it means to be in 3rd person versus 1pp. If immersion is your goal then 1pp will be your choice. If adventuring with your buddies turns you on then 3pp is a great way to play the game. Both have their merits. When the game has better feature content you will see a lot of the purists gravitate to 1pp servers and general PVP will probably stay mostly with 3pp. (in my opinion). It is nice, actually, to have a playstyle I am not fond of eliminated from my server options by simply choosing which perspective I want. -
nah....that would make us all Zombies...and not Infected. Infected mutations make sense....Zombies are just stupid! Snicker, snicker...yuk, yuk..... Sorry, but the GOO had it coming ;-p

Easy guys....you know better than that. The day they put it on the line by announcing a drop date for a build (give or take a day) is the day they return to legitimacy in my world at least. Brian listed 16 "must-fix" items and a few seem pretty complex at this stage. I think that was his sneaky way of setting the tone for an October release. I hope I am as wrong this time as I usually am!

Would it be possible to have linked subservers in a server?
philbur replied to exwoll's topic in General Discussion
ahhh...gotcha... I did not catch what you meant by permadeath being a focus. I would imagine that a quick script in the login list to deny a normally allowed player to login after a death message is logged would be straight forward AFTER the Server Admin tools get released to the public...but that will most likely be a few months at least after the release of 1.0 It will be interesting to see how the admin scripts will be processed but something like this might be your solution. Regardless.... I think you will need to hold off on these kinds of features until we know for sure just how "moddable" the Server Admin Tools are. -
@BeefBacon said: "Just throwing money at the devs doesn't magically make them work faster, in fact - as I've pointed out in the past - it actually made them work slower. The huge early access sales lead them to make DayZ a bigger, more ambitious game rather than just a version of the mod that didn't require Arma 2, which was pretty much the original plan" In response I would ask...Is it maybe because the oversight of this project has allowed too much ambiguity to creep in to the studio? It almost seems that way to me at least. It's great that the team is doing really fantastic things with the look and feel of the Alpha...but at what point is there a conscious decision to stop "playing" with the project and start taking deadlines or ultimate deliverables seriously? That's my fear....one where BI, as a corporation, does not care about finalizing this title because of the revenue they have already received from the Alphers. (or better said, we paid for their new engine development and in return they let us mess around with it). I would hate to right on that one. When .61 drops I think we will have a better idea of just how serious they are about finishing this crazy little thing called love.

Would it be possible to have linked subservers in a server?
philbur replied to exwoll's topic in General Discussion
Hi! Your question is straight forward and as far as I understand it is a reality already. I, myself, am willing to fire up a PRIVATE SHARD SLAVE server that will link to a PRIVATE SHARD MASTER server as an alternate experience for players who are allowed to use it. Basically, a pass worded Private server can have multiple slaves on it's Shard so you can have the master set up as a PVP/PVE experience and then another one for PVE only or one set up as an RP "Farmers and Fishermen" or whatever else you would like. So yes....your wish will eventually come true. The key is to find a reliable and enthusiastic bunch of guys who already have a good player base on a Private Server and then see if they would be receptive to adding a slave server into the mix. (remember that one of the cool things about this setup is the fact that your character is saved across ALL of the servers within the Master Shard.) -
Crunch Time can mean many things I agree. It is also a term to use when a project has entered its' most critical phase and everything HAS to go right in order for success. It is a term to DEFINE your character and prove your work ethic. If you succeed in "Crunch Time" then you are able to focus and apply your skills (and maybe sacrifice a few suppers and weekends if need be) to overcome tight timelines and complicated processes to finally deliver, and you are usually rewarded for it or at least respected for it. Unfortunately the three levels of corporate staff usually get the wrong types of rewards when a project get finished. Managers, Leads, Team....... Raise, Praise, Sundaes...... When it goes wrong?...Well... Managers, Leads, Team....... Raise, Affirmation, Termination.....

Without actually needing an answer to this, I look at recent big titles like BF4, Battlefront, CODx, and ARMA and wonder about how I am using these as a reference to SA and why it might be the wrong way to go about it. Does anyone know how long it took for Frostbite, Source, Unreal, and CryEngine to be deployed? As in NOT "developed"...but actually used in titles AFTER their initial game debut? There are several updated versions of all of those by now and some of them still carry with them a few major bugs and performance issues. Dropping a new game development project into one of these PRE-ASSEMBLED game engines is no less of a guarantee that the dev process will be painless....but the time frame MUST be considerably less, right? I am using this liberal assumption to moderate my ebbing patience and I still maintain that "once the engine and tools are complete" the game will come together quickly and smoothly. It's too bad we have the worst of BOTH worlds, right now....the delays and uncertainty of the source engine development and then the similar pain associated with the design and implementation of a game that runs on it. Hopefully, those that have "left" the community are still willing to give it a go after Beta kicks in. I'm betting the majority are. Is this just me being a hopeless apologist? It seems like there are a few in this Forum that choose to jump down the throats of others that post their feelings and observations instead of creating interest in their own way. If the development is going sideways and we have opinions about why we feel it could be done "better" then it's just good manners to let each others' perspectives be heard...and discussed...but not attacked. Clearly, there are numerous topics that qualify for extreme ridicule (gotta love the Graveyard content!) but I will be honest with you guys and say that one of the KEY reasons my enthusiasm for DayZ SA has not diminished to the point where I am effectively OUT of interest is this very Forum, and the E-conversations we all engage in.

Also...There is the simple method of just setting milestones and "forcing" your team to meet them.... Features may not materialize that were once hoped for...and content may not be as fully developed as originally planned.... But the damn project gets done. People get paid...and then the versions to reach the original goals are slowly worked on and released. Every OS, Game, or mainstream program that hits it big usually does it post-RTM build. Just because the "product" is virtual (and essentially only entertainment) and does not carry any forward progress for our species it is easy to justify the departure from mainstream accountability and results-based metrics. Those who spend their entire working lives in an industry that doesn't actually "produce" anything "real" cannot be asked to meet the expectations of those that do. The ultimate measures of success are not even remotely comparable. I find it tough to buy into the exponential reasoning and excuse-making of why processes that are not 100% familiar to me are not meeting goals promised to me by the very people that presume to know better. If you know so much about a process...then why is it not working the way you said it would...and why, then, does your primary defense of that failure always return to "you don't know what it takes"? If something is not happening they way it should..then something is broken or in need of review. If you simplify it down to a business that delivers a product to a customer then it is all too clear where the main issues lie. It does not appear, in my opinion anyway, that there has been enough "business" done on this project and the feeling I get from the updates is more along the lines of a cool little project a bunch of enthusiastic people have going. I thought this was a "thing" so I paid for it (yes...I got it for cheap because it was not a finished "thing"!). Had I known it was just a "thought" I would be less justified in my scepticism. In other words....the main issues for me are the seemingly poor efforts to run this project as a business. The dropping player base probably won't stabilize until the "perception" is that there is leadership that has the proper methodology to get this done. The player base will, I am confident, rise as they approach RTM and I am still betting this "game" will be an immensely immersive and fun experience....I probably regret the decision to go ALPHA, though, because as much as I have been fascinated by the process....I am now to the point where I just don't see how it can deliver on my own confused and irrationally conceived expectations. As long as I make an effort to deliberately ignore outsiders' perspectives on how this title is progressing then I will be fine....but when the emperor finally finds out about his poor choice of outerwear it usually comes at a crisis of conscience. All that said... I think the first batch of players to give up on DayZ SA have been the die-hard KOS kiddies and I am just fine with that. Hopefully there is a plan afoot in the BI offices to make a concerted effort to advertise and promote DayZ SA when they finally go Beta. That is something I guess we all forgot about, eh? This game has yet to be fully marketed and yet we are already looking at it as a full release title that is doing poorly.... "We" gotta stop doing this to ourselves....sheesh!

That paints a better picture for the statistical trend-challenged out there. I think, though, that when the game FINALLY gets beyond .61 word will spread just as it did in 2014 (via the popular streamers) that DayZ SA is worth a go. Once again, the two years leading up to now have been indicative of just how stagnant and dare I say "directionless" this title has become in absence of Rocket's vision. If there is a driver behind the declining player base I would submit that it might have more to do with the poor hand-off of duties on the public (Game Owner) information side of things. The dev cycle can ebb and flow...but a LOT of the end-user frustration can be mitigated by consistent and positive information releases. I know several people who would have been great fans of the SA, had they just been as patient as I have been. I also know a few others that bought the Alpha...played it for 200 hours and then...in the absence of any clear AND CONSISTENT progressive information simply gave up and went away with the knowledge that they had gotten their money's worth. Content would surely help get boots back on the ground, but maybe I'll try to recruit a couple new people into the fold and see if they have the same reaction to SA as I had in 2014 when I started playing it. If new users can be free of the years of frustration and missed/broken promises I have endured and they exhibit a keen excitement at the possibilities of the DayZ SA experience then I would be slightly more convinced that this epic journey still has a happy ending ahead.

LOTS of people are experiencing this...as it is a known issue with vehicles in the current build. Call it De-sync with an attitude. The fix is to wait it out until the devs address the problem. (it is officially on the list of pending bug squashes).
-
A VERY quick search indicates it is most likely a NIC issue. Check Toms Hardware support forums and you will see quite a long list of people who have had this similar issue and have resolved it. Submit your crash dump for analysis and you should get the answers you need. If you are not tech-savvy then save yourself (and others) a lot of time and swing it over to a respectable shop to have it sorted out. Initial impression is that it is, indeed, your PC...and not DayZ.

Random chance to fall while running full speed in woods and field.
philbur replied to exwoll's topic in Suggestions
Meh...You get used to "picking em up and putting em down" when in rough terrain, in real life. Maybe a movement speed modifier could be implemented governing whether you have a weapon or are unhealthy? (this is probably a given, eventually, though). Randomizing a trip or fall due to running in rough terrain is not something I would be keen on seeing. -
Bugs are always "bad" but generally speaking (in my opinion anyway) there are no bugs that are what you might call "game-breakers" or at least "Alpha-breakers". Losing your weapon when you swap it, or losing a mag is about the worst that can happen...and you might still get hammered by a clipping infected or have your legs broken by a short jump....but these things are just legacy issues that are definitely going to be sorted out in due time. There is an annoying issue with player temperature becoming deadly (Hyper/Hypothermia) but I find that I can mitigate these effects by moving North to cool down and South to warm up. You can spend twice as much on a finished, fully released title and be immensely disappointed in it or you could pick this up and play it easily for 100 hours without being completely bored (even in it's current state of development). BUT.....as nl mentioned......if you are primarily looking for a PVP experience...then you would be better served by H1Z1, Rust, ARK, or other Survival/Raiding offers.

Day Z is an Eatign frenzy and nothign with survail to do at all
philbur replied to Thor Rikki Byhre's topic in General Discussion
I think Apples are pretty hard to fill up on....and if you were VERY thirsty then a full canteen would only get you hydrated partially. So, No..... it's not stupid. Keep at it...check you status and keep drinking and eating until you get the full green "Hydrated", Energized", and "Healthy" bars. Once you get to full green on these you can manage for quite a while (for now, at least) as long as you keep Hydrated as frequently as possible. I hope you stick it out and remember that these forums can be a great source of info for you if you want it. Posting a rant just encourages snarky replies. Cheers! -
Is it worth buying Dayz standalone yet? [With Developer responses]
philbur replied to Blade4777980's topic in General Discussion
I played the Mod...and found the Infected to be annoying and poorly done (which is odd in a Zombie Apocalypse game) loot is just endless, and the graphics levels were simply crap. The time I started getting bored with teaming up for some PVP is the time I started looking elsewhere. I have played the SA Alpha Builds for a couple years now and I assure you that, IMHO, it is very much the real deal and (regardless of what you hear from certain others) you would be doing yourself a disservice if you did not give this ALPHA a chance. Checking out YouTube streams of the .60 build should give you a good idea of its potential. All you need (in addition to the Single Player Mode) is to wait for the LAN Server files and you can host LAN Bashes on the rig! (Just wishful thinking for now!) Go for it! It does not cost a ton, it will only get better and bigger, and lastly, it can be whatever you want it to be. As far as I am concerned....I have not seen a single hacker....I have never had a crash to desktop....I have a ton of fun in full servers and I have a great immersive experience on others that are empty. I don't have a lot of time to play, but when I find time to pull up to my computer I am hard pressed to name other PC experiences that are just as interesting and immersive. BUT... You will NOT be able to play this on a laptop unless it is a SERIOUS piece of hardware. I7, top-notch graphics chipset (or add-on adapter) and a good chunk of RAM. Others play on lesser rigs but I would personally go big on the rig. If you are lucky enough to have a proper berth where you can keep a PC then better yet! -
The updated audio is going to help our immersion...big time....can't wait to find out if suppressors are more realistic as well! The final clip showing the survivors in the middle of that Infected Cluster F#@k was brilliant...and I can imagine watching that from a window and pissing myself laughing. Looks like the devs really nailed the ultimate goal of risk/reward in making noise. This is going in the right direction, IMHO. BEANZ, Guys!

Was anyone on last night? I was, and would like to know if you guys (about 8 others at one point) had the same weather. It was raining heavily inland from the coast for a good while, and then gave way to thick fog from Berezino all the way to the far West edge of the coast. Seemed like I could cut it with a knife, and it was immensely cool. I have lived on the East Coast of Canada and remember when the fog would roll in like this and I had a ball running around Cherno for a good hour or so just popping Infected and making a ruckus. Hell, I even got lost in the city a few times because of the lack of visibility! I do indeed hope to see more of this (really accurate) weather modelling in-game. It even seems like the sounds were heavily muted on the server, which maybe was just my perception, but none the less was pretty damn immersive. -

Final call for either an SVD or an AUG. Going to get rid of at least one of them tonight. Going to be around Balota/Cherno for a couple hours. -
Sad to say...going to pop off all my ammo and then toss the SVD....Great weapon...just not my playstyle. I'll be in game shortly on Helpy Helpers down by Balota and the coastal towns/Cherno so PM me if you want it.
-
Anyone want an SVD with a couple mags and a bunch of ammo? PM me. I am in game now.
