    Any update on Notes returning?

There were many occasions where I wanted to leave a persistent note. Or a map, for that matter.

loot farming with infecteds and boats

Sounds like you are or have been a team member? I wasn't aware of that. Yeah, I can't say I can play only DayZ, but with 1800 hrs under my belt it sure quickly jumped to my personal second place (after Sid Meyer's Alpha Centauri, an entirely different cup of tea). I came to DayZ from the Fallout franchise (dating back to F1) and I rarely look back. But when we talk about the massive impact on the industry, it's hard not to mention the reputation of DayZ, e.g. how 1.0 press announcements in December sounded like somebody resurrected a freakin' mammoth. "2013, when was that". The way this whole situation looks, it's almost impossible to defend. Since you sound like you're in the know - do you know if they still have that separate team from another game just for animal AI and hunting features? I read about it somewhere in 2015 and since then - can't find a word and obviously so many things are more pressing now. So was the whole idea scrapped or not?

Much as I've always had problems with buying the 'they took our money' story, the overall issues seemed to amount to much more than just fumbling deadlines. So you're saying that basically what we're experiencing is 1) executive meddling, 2) 'redefining industry terms'? Whatever the latter means, of course.

    Status Report - January 2019

Yeah, but I'd name like 5 people, you included, whom I'd suspect of consistently using a bow. And now it seems one of the most asked-about features. Nice but weird.

    Status Report - January 2019

I'm so surprised at the outcry about the bow removal. Do you think people really used them or is it more like "how dare you remove an item I've never used" thing? I've never met a player with a bow and in fact, I was kinda embarrassed to admit how I like this weapon. :D

loot farming with infecteds and boats

Thanks for an informative post, good read. Two things that come to my mind here: Whatever you call it, for me some kind of loot farming is related to what @pilgrim* touches upon - the strength and loot of zeds. I'm quite sure that on official servers you can largely consider the infected walking food banks. They tend to drop useful basic stuff (mostly cans) and I'm always happy to see them coming. Part of it comes from how melee works. I don't have high expectations of decent melee and if it was only as good as the chainsaw fight in the original Doom, I'd be completely fine. In many games, melee combat is just button mashing. But melee in DayZ is probably the worst I've ever seen in my life, starting with games from late 80s. "Take a sidestep - mash buttons - something happens - hopefully take loot if a glitch didn't kill you". What I'm saying is, the zeds are only dangerous when they have glitches on their side. I understand what you're trying to say here, but I'm afraid the devs can't have their cake and eat it, too. This is 1.0, they were very clear about it. Whether it's the worst 1.0 since Fallout 76 or since Atari's E.T., it depends on how mean you're feeling today.

Yeah, it seems that you missed half the posts and the entire point. "Just don't do it" is not a proper response to obviously bad mechanics. Some people will always abuse it and gain an upper hand, so @Guy Smiley is right, it's kinda like with the gamma thing. Fortunately, as @ImpulZsays, the dev team sees this issue, too, so there you go.

It's the contrary, what I'd like to do is the research on all the survival elements that will obviously come in over... *must... resist... an obvious... joke...* some time in the future. We need to get to work on our wiki *cough* as soon as *cough* reasonably possible *cough*. So there is that. You don't happen to know how the cold can be caught? I was freezing my ass off naked in the sea for some 20 minutes, to no avail.

383 Hours Played and I find my 1st Heli Crash...

That's an interesting thing to hear. How far to the coast do they reach? I imagine there's still some distance between the player spawn points and the heli ones?

Thanks for the tip, I'll definitely consider it. The reports here are mixed - do we even have the diseases in? A couple of weeks ago I tried to test the health system, but couldn't harm my toon in any way, either through temperature or food intake. Still, I see people complaining about the cold. So is it in or not? And I do want to check the new areas like Zvir, that's for sure.

You actually dragged the issue of sandbox gameplay into this...? The problem with the current loot boom is not that DayZ doesn't work like I want, but that it doesn't work as marketed. At the moment, DayZ is about as much a gritty survival post-apoc experience as Texas Hold'em. Imagine giving every player an invulnerability code and then saying "you don't have to use it, you know". Think about why would you have any problem with that.

We know how it works, we're not suggesting 'no respawn until the restart' or something. But I think you shouldn't be able to station near Berezhki and simply thrive on the local civilian gear. Show me a player who struggles with food and I'll show you someone who didn't figure out DayZ mechanics yet.

Seems your toon owns more stuff than I do in real life. "Gritty survival" my ass... And yes, the latest status report seems to indicate that the devs are blissfully unaware of the issue. I was wondering recently if I should give DayZ another try. Thanks for replying to this question.

Content is #1 Priority, Not Persistence.

Yeah, I've had exactly the same... But now I'm changing my mind somehow. The guy can be legitimately funny at times and it's not like at this current state of the forum he can exert any negative impact. We don't have that many interesting things to discuss anyway. I still think he's one of us, though, or at least a long-time lurker. The way he plays sometimes on the emotions of regulars can be pretty amusing. "Someone's making up boasts about being #1, I need to explain to him that there are no leaderboards". LOL

    Spawn Points at your base

I'd never join such a server. Being sent back to the coast is one of the most important elements of the gameplay. But don't worry, OP, a mod with this option is simply inevitable.

    3 Expert Tips For Basebuilders

I must say I gave a chuckle there. Not bad, OP.
  18. Intrigued by your comment, I not only set out to die due to hypothermia (it's not possible at the moment), but also took off my shoes to see if it affects my health (it doesn't). Frustrated, I checked if I can drown in the sea... and the game didn't let me. My character simply raises to crouch when I crawl into the water (it has never worked like that). This is more or less on par what I was introduced to in mid 2014 (around .45 build), before weather and temperature effects and before health drain for running barefoot. I have no words. If you want to experience a better survival game, just go and play Fallout 4. At least it has sleeping. The above tweet? "you're right in terms of those not being a challenge right now" = "we have removed absolutely all survival features apart from guns, hunger and thirst and just didn't tell anybody." Guys, remember to take off your shoes! It's much quieter this way and does absolutely nothing. And you can absolutely wear no pants in Elektro again. I can't wait to hear from the fanboys. "It's 1.0 so don't expect any features" doesn't really have the same ring to it, does it now?

    Warning To All Survivors

Oh, no, he doesn't piss me off - mainly because I recognized him as a troll immediately and simply ignored the lad (since the beginning, I'm not even talking about this very thread). If I wanted to troll this community, I'd write something very similar to his first 'I'm the best and #1 on leaderboards' thread. The part about being the best aims to rile all the shooting boys here, while the part about KOSing everyone is to fire up the care bears. It's as wide a net as possible and someone was bound to react. Think about that 'topping the leaderboards since forever' part. He obviously knows the game enough to know that there are no leaderboards but also he knows this forum enough to expect that someone feels the urge to condescendingly and angrily explain that in fact, there are no leaderboards in DayZ (duh). This line is a textbook example of classic trolling. This is exactly what I'd do if I wanted some fun at the expense of you all. And this is also why I suspected he's a regular (or at least a long-time lurker). Not that I paid a lot of thought to it. It's OK if you don't believe me and just continue to entertain him and yourself, that's fine. I agree with you on one very important thing - the lad is innocuous and with our forum in this condition, he can as well be my guest. If anyone is amused by his posts, I'm OK with him staying around, the rest can just ignore him. As long as he doesn't try to actively derail more serious topics, there's no harm done. I just wanted to warn anyone who'd like to listen that it may be a waste of time to treat this guy too seriously - that's all. Now I'm going back to ignoring him, and you do whatever you want to do. Have fun. :)

loot farming with infecteds and boats

I agree with you, the 'just don't do it' approach is a helluva wrong reaction to badly designed mechanics and takes us nowhere. The zeds are just walking food dispensers now, to pretend they're not is not a fun part of the game. This is the easiest iteration of dayz I've ever seen and I've been complaining about the lack of challenge for years now.
  21. It's 1.0, which means that only the core mechanics are in and the main work is focused on removing game-breaking bugs. Features will come in the sequel. Don't you know nothing about game development? *ugh* some people. (I'm sorry, I just needed to get it out of my system, I'm feeling better now). Anyhow, today I spawned with the mission to contract and test diseases. I didn't manage to keep my character blue-cold even when I was drenched all the time. I didn't get anything from all the zeds. And I sure as hell didn't get anything from eating raw meat and drinking tincture. In fact, my hands weren't even bloody after skinning chicken! Has it been removed? (It was a community server, but seemingly unmodded and PVE). So my question is, what do we have at the moment, in terms of medical conditions? But I must say, what made me give up was melee with zeds. I can't even recall when was the last time I saw combat this bad. All I could think of is how many weeks of training and internship it would take me to design something on the same level. The game feels worse like Prince of Persia (1989) now.

    Warning To All Survivors

You do realize he's just a troll, right? I mean, you may like it if you want, but he's still a guy who's just sitting there and thinking hard about what can piss people off. I gotta give it to him, he's very classic in his attitude. These days, any kind of bad behaviour or pranks is considered 'trolling' (you'll probably soon hear how Putin 'trolled' Ukraine), but it used to mean a specific kind of rattling in order to ellicit self-righteous mobilization. Exactly like with the 'I'm the best' thread - and boy did it work. In fact, I'm inclined to suspect that the way OP is just a forum regular who's bored to death. He knows how to push your collective buttons without overdoing it so that he's not immediately dismissed. Anyhow, a troll is a troll so it's best not to feed it.

    Base Building and Hacker Raidings

OP, so you've found your loot but even without it I would say that my money is that your base has been discovered. There is no such a thing as what you mentioned earlier, "a location that nobody would have any reason to check". I don't want to make myself sound like a Marco Polo here, but me and many other users have been virtually everywhere, just for the hell of it (and to find my own sweet spots). Rarely I set off with the purpose to find people's bases, yet I've found dozens of them, sometimes very neatly hidden (on several occasions I imagined that if I robbed them, the owners would too assume foul play). But as a rule, what people consider a good spot for a base, usually just isn't (because it assumes that all players only travel from the coast to military locations and there are no random wanderers). One of many examples of subpar locations is the hut at 003 107 - I found tents on many servers there. And as folks say, the map edges are scoured by numerous base hunters. I haven't played recently, but it's worth noting here that tents and structures are (were) never camo'd in the strict sense - humans have in their vision a separate receptor for straight lines. This means that a military tent would always stand out like a sore thumb within a certain distance, unless the game allows now to break its straight contour. The only thing that can be well-hidden from passers-by are barrels under dense trees. Other than that, if a player is near your base, he's likely going to see it. I didn't get that remarks about the stone knife and tac bacons - how do they prove that he was a freshie? A stone knife is always a must-have for me and if something is surprising, is that he let it go. Perhaps he just found the bacon and decided that there's no need for deer hunting for a while. If you want, you can also PM me the location of your base. I can share more thoughts about my approach to hiding/finding stuff. Here I will only add that as a rule of thumb, your best gear should not go into tents, but rather barrels and protector cases. Tents just will be discovered sooner or later.

    Base building waste of time

Tell him I remember the stories about you two overlooking Bere and for a while I even carried a fully-kitted M4A1 (it meant something back then) as a gift for him, but 1) it was on a HC server and you guys played 3pp, 2) US pings were killing me back then (from Warsaw, Poland). Since high ping is much more playable right now, I hope that one day, when 1.0 comes out, we all meet on some US server with @emuthreat and his bunch and hopefully create a meaningful community. Till then, take care there.

    Base building waste of time

*sigh*, why do you have to be the voice of conscience, Mookie? (BTW, it's good to have you back, I noticed you were on pause for a while). ;) I remember when I was the one trying to put out flame wars and reverting the talk back to facts and strategies. But threads like that are extremely rare these days (because there's hardly anything to discuss) and I can't help but check out this forum every now and then just to see what's going on. And although little actually is, it's hardly the fault of the forum users. OK, @choppinbroccoli I don't agree with you, but it's no reason to be a jerk, so sorry for that. Just taking one step back here. Your optimism is definitely not what the problem is here. When I get back from my vacation (hello from Vietnam!), I'd like to do some research on the cold and other diseases. Apart from that, it seems I need a break from this project. And I do need my Cherno fix every now and then. Also, I did hope that the persistence fix comes earlier than a year or two. *sigh* That's really a bummer, you guys. :/
