Re 2) above - here it is again. I opened my map when in Chernaya Polana and saw that my location is presented there with a yellow circle, which moved whenever I moved. Moreover, I noticed a strange note 'zombie crouched magenta', but when I got there, the note faded and there was no zombie around. When I left that location, the note re-appeared. The GPS disappeared later on, probably when I left the server. See below. Anyone ever noticed anything similar?

Being the nice guy is often the hardest job in dayZ.
Kirov (DayZ) replied to OptimumVision's topic in General Discussion
I think Bororm is on to something here. See, I didn't come to DayZ from the mod or CoD or any other FPS. One of my favorite franchises is Fallout, from F1 to F:New Vegas. In cRPGs like that I just can't bring myself to be a bad guy or even a so-so. I'm always super nice to NPCs (unless they're the bad guys) and can't help but being an obnoxious goody-two shoes. And it pays off with better dialogue options, quests, etc. Maybe we friendlies just come to DayZ half-expecting this same kind of a good story - the hero overcomes obstacles and gets the girl, the villains get their comeuppance. In Chernorus, a bullet to your back is often the only thanks you get and there is no moral to your story. So maybe we shouldn't expect anything really. Today I was once again roaming the East looking for freshspawns, starting fires and leaving food and rags there. Didn't meet anybody, but I understand that this kind of helping puts me at risk and that I will have to kill many a freshspawn. Well, I just hope other encounters will make up for that. My advice is to keep doing what you do, just take precautions. Keep your distance, don't give ammo right away and always pay attention to how people talk. Never just assume anything and stay frosty. -

Thanks for that info, had no idea. -
I understand the need to have Bandits and KOSers around, Chernarus is supposed to be a dangerous place after all. But what really gets my nerve is the above argument. "Non-KOSers try to enforce their way, why don't they just adapt." Let's face it - however this game should be played in your opinion, it's the KOSers who got their way. KOSing renders it really hard/borderline impossible for other players to play the way they want. Even players with good intentions and would-be Heroes get dismayed sooner or later and just start to KOS themselves. I don't complain this much, I met great people in Dayz, but I see somebody grumbling about it here every week. The KOSers already won, guys - way more than half encounters end in a non-roleplayed, unreasonable, untimely death (and stop pretending this is realistic; no, you wouldn't actually be a KOSer in a post-apocalypse Earth; you need a society/community to survive, you just blissfully don't realize it now, my dear Mad-Max-wannabe). And choosing 'friendly' servers hardly helps, I was KOSed several times there. So basically by KOSing you force initially nice players to behave like paranoid maniacs, and then you blame people like the OP for not complying with your way. Whenever I see this, I think about rich, powerful, white, straight men whining how they're actually the oppressed minority. But don't worry, mate. KOSing is here to stay and if the OP wanted a different game experience, well tough luck I guess.

Being the nice guy is often the hardest job in dayZ.
Kirov (DayZ) replied to OptimumVision's topic in General Discussion
Started my HC day today in Cherno and was immediately attacked by a bambi, before I was even able to do something. I run away, but got back to Cherno. At the fire station I found a guy with a broken leg and made a splint for him. Then his buddy showed up and we traded some stuff (I carry extra items for barter), they gave me bolts for my crossbow. But instead of killing them like almost everybody here suspects, expects and recommends, I teamed up with them. Shortly thereafter I glitched through the wall in a school and ended up on a narrow roof over the entrance, no option to go back or move in any way except down to my death. So the guys stood right below me and told me I can jump... I laughed and did exactly that and - voila! - survived. Only my pants were ruined (and I wear a very fashionable crimson paramedic set). After they saved my life, we looted Zeleno and Pavlovo together, where the server restart split us forever. I hope they're fine and well and found that goddam rope. Everyone could have killed everyone else a hundred times, but noone did. And I had a backpack and a vest they were looking for. Instead we backed each other and helped with useful loot. I have no idea why they took a crimson-clad friendly armed with a crossbow to military locations, I felt more of a liability than an asset, but they did anyway and we had some fun. Long story short, have my beans for good efforts, don't give up and believe me you'll have much better stories to tell than the 'I ran to the NWAF and died in Elektro' folks. :) -
A campfire definitely works for me, but right now I have this impression that that temperature thing is still buggy. I can drop damp clothes on the ground, pick them up and they're dry again (or at least without the 'damp' status). At the beginning I had the option to wring out my shoes, and the rain was falling inside buildings. And sometimes I had 'cooling off' and 'warming up' info immediately one after another. Sometimes I was dry and then immediately 'soaked' (in the rain), without any 'damp' or 'wet'. Also, I'm quite sure running warms you up. I believe we can expect some minor fixes with that mechanics.

Are those 50k cans of beans to be spread more or less evenly? Some servers are called 'high loot', is it going to mean anything in 0.49 and later? -
Actually vomiting doesn't help with sickness, it's a common misconception mentioned by Merino in his guide, which was made for 0.34 (and I haven't heard anything about any major change since then). He explains the source of confusion, but I forgot atm, i think people believe that as the yellow 'sick' status from vomiting overrides the red 'sick' status from poisoning (or maybe the explanation is different, can't recall). What really saved you is drinking and eating a lot, as this helps you regenerate before you pass out from the poisoning. More details here:

I can confirm that there are tents spawning in feedshacks like above, but they are extremely rare. Once I visited like 150-160 feedshacks with no luck, while the other day a friend of mine was just passing by one and wouldn't you know it, a tent inside. We immediately set off to pitch it and we promptly lost it due to the server restart. You may want to wait until 0.49 comes in, there will be a wipe. After that, I'm back on my quest for tents myself.

Why nobody want to play in the night time?
Kirov (DayZ) replied to MrKartel's topic in General Discussion
@ Barnabus. I'm afraid the weapon flashlight won't fit on a crossbow. I don't even know if how much light it gives - if the same as the headtorch, then sorry it's way not enough. Yep, I'm breaking any chemlights I can find, I was just wondering if there's any 'strategy' to do so. I noticed chemlights are very poor if lit in the open. -

Kirov (DayZ) replied to MrKartel's topic in General Discussion
Yeah, I know how night vision works, it's just the one in Dayz doesn't match my RL experience at all. In reality, you use light sources to shed light on stuff, in Dayz from most angles and in most cases, the only thing you can see better is the light source itself. Yesterday I lit many campfires and broke many chemlights in Zelenogorsk, and the entire city was going more and more dark in the process... -
Why nobody want to play in the night time?
Kirov (DayZ) replied to MrKartel's topic in General Discussion
For those of you who play in the nights and do it honestly i.e. gamma tinker free, what's your go-to solution with a light source? I tried to use chemlights and campfires, also on buildings' second floors, and I don't find either too useful. Looking at a campfire or chem blinds you waay too much to be realistic (there is a moment while starting a fire when your screen goes absolutely pitch black apart from the kit) and you end up seeing less of your nearby area than more. The headtorch just doesn't cut it and I can't use any weapon/pistol flashlights (running around with a crossbow and magnum), so the only option left for me is a portable gas lamp, which I use very scarcely and only not to miss loot. It's still a bummer when you have to switch from the lamp to the weapon, but you get used to it after some time. Do you owls have any more tips for playing nights? -
Beats me, I'm a Survivor not Attenborough. :P And maybe they're yet to implement 'infected carps', don't forget it's still alpha. :D No rush, dear Devs. No rush.
-
Maybe the worms are infected? Come to think of it, why don't we have infected fauna? Just imagine your face when pulling out a carp frothing at its mouth, or getting mauled by a chicken run amok.

:D The stick as a weapon, I didn't think of that. Must consider it for low-profile characters. Personally, I don't bother with carrying neither a rod nor a shovel. An axe, a rope and a fishing hook (preferably on a bonnie hat to save even more space) is all you need to carry at all times. You grab the next shovel/hoe you find, dig 1-3 slots of worms and throw the tool away. Then it's just the matter of finding the stick and you can immediately go fishing. In Msta you'll find an ashtree next to the water pump and there is a small pond in the woods to the east. There are a lot of ashes in Novo and I believe you can fish in nearby bodies of water, close to the motorway. That's just two examples, it should be quite easy for you to craft a rod, fish and then throw the rod away. These day I carry 3-4 ropes with me, a must-have for any hunter-gatherer, so I can always make a backpack, a bow if necessary or rods. So it all depends on how many spare ropes you can find. If you can hit somebody with an ashwood stick, can you do the same with a rod? Hm...

Then you wouldn't be bothered by the stats in a slightest way. Noone who doesn't want to see them, has to.
-
I'm in two minds as to the stat system. On the one hand, I agree that stats are evil. On the other, I see Rambo's points about the deliberately limited application of such stats. KOSers will KOS anyway, non-KOSers could benefit somewhat, in a way which may be misleading (which is good). On one thing I fully agree with Rambo - in DayZ, we've got waaay fewer tools to assess a stranger's trustworthiness than in RL. There are tens of facial muscles put to work when you smile, and one of them doesn't work if you smile in an artificial, out-of-politeness way. And we as humans have evolved to spot that. People like blunce say to use your judgment - sure you do, but the options are just so limited. So let's say the other guy is looking around, which leads you to believe he's a dodgy type. In reality, you could at least approximate how nervous he is, guess if he's trying to spot your companions or looking around for his. Does he have that 'crazy look'? Is he nodding or smiling in a nice way? Do his eyes constantly wander to the gun on your hip? Are his palms sweating? It's so much easier to lie in DayZ, to pretend to be a newb or something just before going for your jugular. In reality, more stuff would blow your cover, be it blood stains on your shirt (good idea!) or saliva at your mouth. So yeah, I believe that Rambo is really on to something here. The fact that stats are misleading only adds to the pros of this system. On the other hand - goddamn numbers...

Thanks both of you, off I go to both routes. And sheep. I recalled I'm still missing sheep in my hunting trophies.

Can you tell me where it happened? And where rabbits are reported to be seen by reddit users? It's the last animal on my list. :)

Hello, I’m new to this forum and relatively new to DayZ, although I do have some hours under my belt running around Chernorus and mostly trying to live in a survival mode, by hunting, learning my way around the map, etc. Not much in the department of interaction with other players, though, as I tend to avoid airbases and only looted them a couple of times. Right now I’m trying to figure out a few things about DayZ and was hoping you can help me out, guys. The first thing is definitely the tent. I’ve been trying to find one for hours through +100 feedshacks, to no avail. Castles also seem to spawn absolutely no loot as of .48 stable. Can you guys tell me any better way to grab a tent than to run from one shack to another? It occurred to me that maybe the tent has not been implemented after all and I had to check this forum to learn it is in fact there. And what about its persistence? Is it true that there are no HC servers with persistence on and you always have to roll up your tent before restarts anyway? If so, when can we expect fully operating tents? The second thing is related to P2P interaction. Right now I have a lot of fun playing a lone wolf in more secluded areas. I manage to find a good loot, although maybe not the best in the game, in less visited spots like Turovo or Novodmitrovsk and I actively hide when I see other players. I’d like to interact sometimes and say friendly, but I’m always worried I’ll get KOSed for my backpack/vest/weapon/whatever. What can I do, if anything, to increase the chance of friendly encounters? Will looking poor do the trick? If I do look harmless, can I shout ‘friendly’ in locations like Berezino or Elektro, or are these still no-holds-barred warzones? The third thing is about bows and crossbows – have any of you successfully used them? I understand they’re no match to guns, but are they or will they be worth any effort at all? Currently it’s my mini-goal to craft and practice shooting a bow. J The fourth thing concerns medical supplies – I’m quite sure that for playing solo, only bandages and morphine do any good. Defi, epinephrine, blood and saline are for teams, the application of charcoal is very limited, while painkillers, antibiotics, vitamins and injection vial seem to have no effect at all, now that infections and diseases are not implemented yet. Am I right or am I missing something? Thanks in advance for any help! :)

Just committed pre-wipe suicide in Berezino
Kirov (DayZ) replied to spartacusrex's topic in General Discussion
Wow, I'm suprised by how this topic quickly devolved into a flame war. Nice story OP, I would definitely bitch about losing my stuff in this way if I wanted to just share it with a friendly. :) -
Thanks, I'll remember that. We found 2 grenades and one flashbang, none of them worked the other day and it looked like a glitch, but one worked just too fine the next time we logged in. :)

Starting to think I'm too nice of a player.
Kirov (DayZ) replied to OptimumVision's topic in General Discussion
I'd like to do something similar every now and then, can you tell me which routes you tend to take? Right now I believe the safest places to meet and help are spawn points like Dolina, Polana, Dubrovka or Msta. In Krasno I already run into trouble, same in Svetlo, not to mention Berezino or Novo. Do you really find a use for charcoal? With rotten fruit gone, the only way to get a food poisoning right now is eating worms, raw/burnt meat or blue berries. So if you aren't force fed, it's hard to poison yourself unless you're completely new to the game. Tetracycline as in antibiotics? Can't say I ever had any medical condition apart from bleeding, unconscious and dead. Aren't the antibiotics for treating infections, i.e. useless as of .48? I sure hope I run into you the next time I'm looking for the parts for a backpack or fishing pole. Ropes, matches, pristine kitchen knives, maps - that's the kind of stuff I enjoy way more than M4 accessories. :) -
A few questions about survival - SA .48 Stable
Kirov (DayZ) replied to Kirov (DayZ)'s topic in New Player Discussion
So me and my friend turn up in Turovo, at the jail which is lit by a chemlight. We enter, sure enough there are 2 guys upstairs. They say we don't have to fight, friendly etc. My friend had a chance at a shot but didn't take it and wanted to talk it out. However, the other guy immediately shots him in the head. I wait and when he goes down the stairs, I shot my Magnum at him. I'm a poor shot and was super stressed at that moment, so didn't kill him, his shots also weren't fatal. I run away like hell, hide behind a house, bandage myself, leave my mountain backpack and come back with a Mosin. Heart pounding, I slowly make my way back the road, assuming they probably run to Kamarovka anyway. Waiting for like ten minutes, the door in my LRS, still nothing. Then a guy appear, I take a shot and miss. He appeared again, this time I got him. I reposition and wait for the other guy. Meanwhile my respawned friend is at Krasno and wouldn't you know it, overhears somebody drinking a soda at the police station. And the two of us and the two of them are the only people on the server. :). So he runs in with his pitchfork and starts chopping that guy. The guy screams 'Why? I don't have anything, I'm a bambi!' and my friend goes like 'You SOB you just killed me and my friend got you soon afterwards, now you're going to die again, you cunt!'. I laugh my ass off and still wait at the jail, but soon they both logged out. :D So a bandit killed once and got killed twice for that. Karma's a bitch sometimes. And we honestly would have let them go on their way in peace, we werent' looking for trouble. Oh, well, too bad for them and the adrenaline rush from avenging my friend was priceless. -
On 3PP, which I still play in 1PP (more immersive this way), I got a little bored so I assembled a portable gas lamp and switched to a night server for the first time (without a gamma change). I must say it is a bit spooky at first, especially in a Z-infested place like Stary Sobor when you have to switch to a weapon and fight in the darkness... Cool stuff, I'd like to raid more dangerous places like that, it's just I don't want to be the only one who runs around with a light source. And it's easy to miss loot that way. On HC, me and my friend were armed to the teeth and doing heli sites. Last time we found some grenades, but they didn't go off for some reason. So tonight we start and the first thing my friend does is throwing a grenade way too close to his feet. I ran away, he misclicked and went boom. First 2 minutes of a joint play. :) The corpse unlootable, we had to meet and continue the heli raid. I've got two drum mags for my AKM, so I'd like to spend it before the wipe in Berezino or the NWAF. Speaking of which, a funny thing happened to us before the last wipe deadline (last Wednesday). We went to the NWAF with a death wish, never less than 15-17 people on the server. The base was pristine, all the loot you want and Zeds indicating that nobody was there. We spent there like an hour and nobody showed up. The people of Chernarus will never fail to surprise me. :)
