    Rabbit Snares and Fish traps

Any luck with that, ricp? I've tried everything in the book, even took the journey to places where rabbits were supposedly seen (South of Zelenogorsk, East of Krasnostav), set up several snares on different servers (persistence on/off), waited up to an hour, all in vain. People on experimental reported that snares worked everywhere within 20 minutes, but I believe something is broken with that on stable. BTW, I have the same 'quest' as you do - all survival features tested out. ;) And yeah, chickens can be killed even with fists. @ Tatanko - domestic pigs can be found in Msta (close to the most southern buildings), but so far they yield 'pig pelts' and 'boar steaks'. :) If there are sheep confirmed in dayz, I'd like to know.

Clearing this up: DayZ is NOT years afterwards

I understand that the outbreak was just a few days ago and I understand that Chernarus is a run down country, but just so happened today that I went to Gorka and saw a tree growing right in the middle of the road (as in: between two traffic lanes, right there on asphalt), just next to the church. I remember the Communist Poland from my childhood and no, trees don't grow on the streets in developing countries like this. Please chop it down for good if we're just after dayZ. It's stuff like this (and probably the condition of many cars) which makes people think it was years ago.

    Any News on REAL Snipers?

I mentioned I don't have any real bee with snipers, but what I don't like in this forum is the above kind of comment. Guys, you really need to recognize that if there are two kinds of gameplay, one "I shoot everyone I see" and another "I like to prance about grasslands with my animal friends", then upon meeting, the first one already enforces his gameplay on the another. Some people here sound as if a jock started a fight and when the police are called, cried how his liberties are being restricted. Guys, when you shoot somebody in the face, especially not threatening or not in PvP zones (e.g. long distance shot), they you give him a very severe case of restricted-libertisis. His gameplay, his expectations, his sense of fun, don't really mean much to you when you pull the trigger. So maybe, just maybe, invoking your constitutional rights to defend aggressive game is a bit hypocritical. That being said, I like how Chernarus is a dangerous place and not a Disneyworld. My main complaint is that if 80% encounters is KOSing, then it's really hard to talk about variety and diversity. Creative with social interactions, most Survivors are not.

Medic here. Everyone is starving to death

One kindling is all that is need to start and maintain fire, to which you can add up to 8 stones. A funny thing, apparently only firekits with wood count as the real McCoy and currently you can put 8 stones and 5 steaks into a firekit and still pack the whole set into your backpack. Hopefully will get fixed soon. Another bug I noticed was related to the compass and actually hurt me a lot. The directions were rotated 90 degree clockwise (my compass showed West where the North was, etc.). I'm 100% sure it wasn't my getting lost, I was in Severograd at the moment. Dehydration can be very much an issue in 0.51, water gets used very quickly. Still, plenty of stuff on persistent servers. Since this conversation I've spotted scores of greenhouses safe for playing Granny the Gardener. The only thing I can't seem to find now are fishing hooks. Do you guys know any good locations for setting rabbit snares? I can't catch a thing and apparently the snares are gone on restarts even with persistence.

I haven't checked that, but it is my impression you need either kind of wood in order to ignite it. Then it can run on one stick and several stones and I think you can even take out the stick. I'll check that next time. I built a campfire with only 5 kindlings and it took 14 minutes to cook deer steaks. Far from an exciting gameplay, I admit, but nevertheless an option of last resort. It seems that with 0.51, water consumption got much much quicker, at least when you sprint a lot. And my two cents about the issue of realism - I don't really consider it realism, I consider it a challenge. And I want more of it. I don't mind weather conditions harsher than they actually are at this latitude, as I want to struggle weather rather run around in a jumper just because it's 'springtime'. I think DayZ is not realistic and I think it never will be. Our avatars don't have to sleep, poop, are never really exhausted, are jack-of-all-trades, never have a toothache, will never spawn with epilepsy. You can literally make the game four times harder and our characters will still remain larger-than-life superhumans. So maybe this is not an issue of 'realistic', but rather, how much 'challenging' you want the game to be. I vote for 'a lot', thank you very much. EDIT: and thanks for the tip, Whyherro.

I have yet to check it out in 0.51, but in 0.50 kindling would do. Yep, making a fireplace sure should be easier. But the old method (with firewood mandatory) made up with the challenge what it lacked in realism. For some time I would even carry a stone to sharpen my axe. :)

Wooden sticks don't have to be chopped, just go among the trees, stick your nose to the ground, run around and keep hitting 'F'. Sooner or later, you'll have the option to 'search for kindlings' or something. Take two, one for the fireplace kit and one to actually start the fire. Now, I learnt yesterday that you can find stones in the sea - just go two steps into the water and you have this option. Stones are apparently 1x1 now, so you can actually keep that on you and stay virtually immune to the axe problem. Also, I read somewhere that you can try looking for loose rocks on stone paths, but I've never tried it. If it works, then a piece of paper and a match is all you need to cook in most areas of the map. So, do we have new animals in 0.51 or not? I'm not resorting to cannibalism just yet. :)

Medic here. Everyone is starving to death

Just an update to DocWolf's reality check above, based on my today's gameplay: - as I found out, a hacksaw can be used both to make a fish trap and to prepare fish. So for sardines you only need either of the knife/machete/hacksaw and of course a bottle; - a decent campfire doesn't need chopped firewood; you can search for stones in the sea and cook fish in no time. I came to Svetlo geared with survival issue (more ropes than ammo, etc.), lost it all in the sea due to a stupid slip, then on a persistent server, within just two hours (ok, I was well-fed already) I gained access to enough food to literally feed an army for days. And I really don't want to brag about eating here. ;) What I want to say is, find (a knife or similar + 1 bottle + matches) and/or (tomato seeds + hoe or shovel) and you can get 'stuffed' several times over. Just eat some apples and give a thorough loot to sheds, smaller residential buildings and apartments, like nettles said above. You should be golden in relatively short time.

I always figured that bushes and trees can provide decreasing yields and eventually "run out", but never bothered to test that. It's good to know you picked so much. Also, someone earlier mentioned tomatoes and the scarcity of greenhouses. Today I run to Svetlo to fish sardines, fell into the sea, lost my gear and decided to thoroughly loot Svetlo. It turns out there are 16(!) greenhouses scattered among the town, many of them relatively safe to watch over. Also, with all those simple countryside residential buildings, your chances for a shovel (and 200 tomato seeds) are quite high. I'm not sure if you're bound to starve on the coast. Also FYI, greenhouses appear on the dayzdb map as small red dots.

    Any News on REAL Snipers?

Yep, I guess we agree, then. The OP proves snipers around Chernarus can be a lot of fun.

You don't burn that many calories when just standing under a tree, besides the chance to find a few apples is not that small. You can eat 5-10 apples before moving on, depending on the proximity of the nearest town.

    Any News on REAL Snipers?

This is not to say I have a beef with snipers, it's just I believe the sentence 'all play styles are equal' is not literally, 100% true.

    Any News on REAL Snipers?

Personally I'm all for variety and I see the place of banditry, but don't tell me an obnoxious kid who server hops, camps sniper hills and teabags his victims is no different from a committed survivor/hero/bandit/sniper. No part of the definition of 'fun' says 'ruin fun for others'. Like Frankie says, smack talking KOSers are just newbs who don't get much out of the game.

Medic here. Everyone is starving to death

I agree, and it's not like I ridicule players who are already in deep trouble, it's just there's this suspicion that they've never had a shovel in their hands, unlike us, the working and farming class of Chernarus, soil of the earth, etc. etc. I know picking apples and especially berries can be super tedious, but you can get more than one apple from one apple tree, so filling your stomach is feasible on a few trees (and there is a humongous orchard near Berezino). Then you need to focus on industrial and farming buildings for proper tools. I admit, I probably could starve to death if spawned in an unknown area with literally no loot. It's just my main complaint is food being far too easy to get right now. But maybe it's just me. Personally, I'd love to see you begging to trade your Mosin for a fishing hook and this is where I'd stop with food nerfing. :D Which reminds me, we all forget one great option to stay alive - find other players and don't shoot them. Instead, ask them to barter, ask them what locations they've looted, if they've seen a greenhouse, this kind of stuff. Keep some spare items on you for trade. If the current changes enforce such behaviour, then by god looting is anything but broken. On the contrary, I want more of that.

Great story, and i like great stories. Have my beans and post more when you have it.

All true and I admit that collecting the entire set can take some considerable time. However, it is important to bear in mind that: 1) you always have apples/berries to keep you going. 2) you have other options to consider; gun+matches+knife is a basic stuff for hunting, but you can also try fishing (I know it takes more tools, but sometimes you just find fishing gear all day), and now you have the snares, tomatoes and sardines; on persistent HC servers I find tomato seeds everywhere (apart from normal canned food) and I think this option is quite easy if still tedious. All in all, learn how to take care of your stomach before you head out for military loot, learn where to find game, ponds, greenhouses, orchards and you will simply never worry about starvation again. This reminds me: matches and knives can be found in 2-floor residential buildings, some have kitchens upstairs, some downstairs, both kinds are abundant in bigger cities, but also e.g. in Polana.

I don't know the exact values, but at least pre-0.50 I think you may confuse energy provided with stomach volume. It's true that steaks are XS size and you can actually eat a cow in one sitting. Once I ate ca 600% of meat at once and didn't even get 'stuffed'. However, they give a lot of calories and I was light-green 'energized' for many, many hours of running. I even decided to give it a test and not eat anything in the meantime to see how long I can go, but then I kinda forgot about it, it was that long. So have a good solid boar's worth of a meal and you can camp snipers' hills for days. I haven't checked it for 0.50 though, I heard you burn calories much faster now. Still no problems with food here.
  18. Kirov (DayZ)

    Help please

Unless they changed it in 0.50, animals could be found like in the middle belt of the map, on the level of Msta, Gvozdno, Zeleno. Msta in particular never failed me to provide all kinds of game. If you camp up North, I think the closest I found deer is just south of Severograd. Happy hunting! Of course, although fishing is a bit more tedious due to the tools, it's also the most surefire way to get meat.
  19. Kirov (DayZ)

For the life of me, I cannot craft a bow and/or arrows.

The bow's maximum distance is +100 or even 200 metres (i.e. when you shoot at 45 degree angle, but I tested that along time ago), while it's effective range is like maybe 3-5 metres. I had a bow phase myself and it was remarkably short. Unless you go only against animals and zombies and even then only at very close distances. The sway is just unpredictable and too often I hit zombies in elbows (which is funny, because with no shot noise they sometimes don't know what hit them and run to their sides). Bolts for the crossbow can be found at fire and police stations, although I admit they're rare. They are also at the arch buildings, at least the red brick one. The crossbow is accurate, even more with the holosight, but has a ridiculous rate of fire so you'd better be a good shoot. In general, both weapons get a lot of points for style, but make up for it with uselessness. I hope at least the bow will be improved. I still run around the HC server with my crossbow, though.

Is it going to get cut back? I can't wait. Right now the main plague of the post-apocalypse world still seems to be obesity. And yeah, I'd actually like to hear somebody recount how they starved/dehydrated to death. I don't even feel the need to carry canteens/bottles anymore. Where do you head to after a respawn? I believe you have hours of playing after spawning 'hungry'. Plenty of time to find water and at least an apple tree (I admit picking berries can be somewhat tedious) even on a lootless server.

It seems that the sanctions on Russia took their toll before the apocalypse. Also, this: I can perfectly understand that you find servers with virtually no loot, but it's beyond me how anyone can starve to death in DayZ.

Long Break From DayZ, what's new?

I haven't played for a couple of months and it's 0.50 now (which means one HC avatar survived the entire .49 ;) ), can you tell me guys about any less-than-obvious changes from .49, apart from what's mentioned in the dev log and by wobo? I see it's much hotter now? Any serious changes to the loot, tent spawn, etc.?

And pigs make great aircraft now, as well. ;)
  24. Kirov (DayZ)

    Newbs, ask a vet.

Today I found a greenhouse on eastern outskirts of Chernaya Polana. I'm not sure about any nearby water, but I think you can fish, drink and swim in those water canals in Novo.
  25. Kirov (DayZ)

Is DayZ really set in fictional Ukraine?

I'm no expert of anything Czech, but living in this area of Europe (i.e. Poland), I'm not really convinced that Chernarussian town names bear any resemblance with the Czech language, not taking the Cyrillic into account. On the contrary, they sound 100% Russian, with words like Krasno-, Chernaya, -grad etc. Novodmitrovsk sounds super Russian to my ear. That there is a Muslim country to the west of Chernarus - my mind is blown. This is where I can try to stop fitting this country somewhere on the real map of cultural influences. Chernarus looks distinctly European to me and I fail to picture it anywhere past Kazakhstan.
