    The Guide to Wilderness Survival

Anybody managed to roast and eat a pumpkin? It seems I can eat neither fresh nor roasted ones. Moreover, the latter don't even get their texture changed, I just got a dialogue window "Confirmation of changes". I managed to roast apples and tomatoes all right and now I wonder if their nutrition values are changed in any way. Any info on that? I noticed that you can make tripwire with a stick and metal wire. I tried it, but the tripwire disappeared in the grass, as some stuff is wont to do. Did anyone have better luck? Tatanko, on re-reading your post, two questions: 1) You mention catching bigger fish? With netting and wire? What would that bigger fish would be and in what kind of waters? 2) How do you get resin for your torches? I only have the option to cut a branch and some bark, however the bark option is duplicated. Thanks, I'll come with more info and questions. And it's a pity that stalking is broken and animals are so scarce, I may still need to wait for the outdoorsman lifestyle I was waiting for.

    The Guide to Wilderness Survival

I'm loving the new outdoorsman style but for the love of God, I just can't kill a deer with a bow. The animal just won't let me closer than 40-50m no matter what I do, and this distance is way too far for me to make accurate connect. Any ideas? I slow crawl, hide behind the bushes, all to no avail. Actually even the cow is not super easy, I mean I have to focus for a longer moment. Haven't found a board yet. Is it me or are there way fewer animals than pre 0.55? Several places which used to spawn fauna for sure now are empty. Even Mogilevka and Bere give only one cow now (checked shortly after the restart). On the plus side - stoves finally work, both with pots and pans! However, they warm you up rapidly, both on the ground and in slots, as if it was a fireplace.

    The Guide to Wilderness Survival

Thanks Tatanko, I was away waiting for content, now I think it's time to get back. One thing - is everything you say for real in 0.57? Like the one about the improvised rope or that you need lard to cook something in a cooking pot? Did all of this make into 0.57? And another question - can the small pile of guts be used for bow/rod? I know it wasn't possible before, I'm asking if anything changed.

    choppers or bicycles ?

What about the rail hand car? Surely its physics should be quite simple, shouldn't it? Why exactly is the bike so hard to implement?
  5. LOL. Well played, you devious devious earth hu-mans.
  6. Sorry, I know the OP got it mixed up and this thread shouldn't even be here, but this piqued my interest: Is that so? How do you exactly abuse the humanity system in the mod to become a bandit in a hero skin? Note: I've never played the mod myself.

Real Life Skills You've Learned from DayZ

@ Whyherro123 and BCBasher - thanks for your replies, I'll bear them in mind. @Tatanko, I need to hook up with you at your social meetings; I still have this on/off relation with dayz and currently I'm going a bit off. I love this game, but the current crafting/survivalist issues (fishing, cooking, etc.) frustrate me a bit. ;)

    Realism Vs Enjoyment

I'm sorry, I haven't read the entire thread, but this is gold: You see, zombies' speed and strength are unrealistic for this guy. Wow.
  9. Kirov (DayZ)

    Most wanted feature?

Tents surviving wipes, more survival crafting (from food to weapons), more animals, etc. And yes, bicycles.

Real Life Skills You've Learned from DayZ

I can safely say orienteering. In dayz as in my forest nearby now, I always want to know where exactly I am, where North is, etc. And I don't mean - "take the road to the right" but rather "past that hill there's a groove, turn NE from there, etc." This also made me realize that the ingame map is actually a piece of shit compared to your real 1:40k tourist maps. I'd love to pick more survival skills as inspired by dayz, however I don't know where to start. How did you learn of all this? On your own, from a mentor or some course/camp? I must say I'm a bit wary of commercial surviving courses, fearing they teach stuff like 'wear warm clothes to prevent cold'... But maybe I'm wrong.

    How was your Day(Z)?

Either you had blood but didn't recover your HP (light-green energized) or there was this 'bone structure damage' Wobo mentions in one of his clips from a long time ago (basically, you can be one-punch wasted even on full blood and health if you took a lot of beating over the course of your avatar's life because something something; I'm not even sure if it's in the game anymore). For me, achieving the 'healing' status can be a huge quest right now. On the plus side, yesterday and tonight I started to learn how to deal with zeds without a scratch. Basically, as I move through urban areas, I find buildings with two exits and something like a table (or other obstacle) inside. Then I close one of the doors. When a zed jumps me, first I wear down his/her speed, then I run into my building, wait on the other side of the table, then sprint to the door and close it behind me. Works like a charm as long as the zed in question doesn't clip through the door. The best building for this is the supermarket, as zeds can't go out the windows and you can sprint between the racks. Also, you can employ the bug related to the fire station tower - grab a handful of zeds, get them inside the station, run in circles, close all doors, run up the stairs and find the ladder to teleport outside. An abuse, of course, but if you're desperate, you can deal with 4 zeds at once this way. :) There is an easy and funny way of making the zeds tired and that is to find a longishpart of a fence and just step over it to and fro. Watch as poor zeds have to run 2 miles' worth of distance while you hop like a bunny. You can do that until they can barely move and use that time to come up with a plan to deal with them. As concerns clipping through doors - I noticed once that a zed can go through closed doors sometimes because the game thinks the door is open for them. In such a situation, if you open the same door, zeds should be unable to go through, thinking it's closed. I saw this once, but this needs further research.

.55 loot, I'll just leave it at this.

Who, me? No, I wanted to play a zombie survival game with harsh survival conditions and varied interactions with other players, ranging from banditry to cooperation under demanding circumstances. I got precisely zero of these elements before 0.55, even "banditry" just meant KOSing due to paranoia or boredom. So maybe would you like to retract your statement? To people who say that "80% of the community" will be driven off - you have no idea how many people stopped playing dayz because it boiled down to "loot, fight, die". It was an FPS and a poor one to that. And when it started to deliver on the "zombie survival" element, some people act like they're being cheated... Guys, I'm sorry, but this must have happened sooner or later. Yes, I agree that right now it is very hard to feed yourself, but not because the food is scarce, but only because fishing is broken, the bow doesn't work and farming is nerfed! Not one of you dying-of-starvation guys ever mentions finding a farming hoe. So take a clue. What were you even thinking? Both from the gameplay point of view ("dayz is supposed to be a zombie survival game") and let's call it, the 'realistic' point of view ("apocalypses are rather bad"), you can't expect what happens in Chernarus to be a Quake Tournament.

.55 loot, I'll just leave it at this.

So did anyone contract a disease from spoiled veggies? I'm quite sure this is not implemented right now. But then again, I came to think the same about a land mine which wasn't triggered by the zeds, so I decided to run over it and see if it works. Spoiler alert: it does. :) Actually, yesterday I died twice to a botched experiment. First was the land mine, then me and my friend put some ammo in a furnace. Seeing it does nothing, we put a spray can in and like, took a really close look at the furnace. LOL.

.55 loot, I'll just leave it at this.

I find myself in both types, particularly the former one. I love the way it is much harder to survive these days, however the current bugs are super frustrating to me. When my character found the hard way about the fish, he might have wept a little. Also, I don't understand why they had to nerf farming (no seed cutting, less seed stacking)? And remember that with no rain you need a container just to farm, even if you stand next to a pump and could carry the water in your mouth. As a friend of mine put it, "hit snipers not farmers". And while I fully accept that crafting some more complex stuff can be tricky (it actually takes a moment to be able to fish), it would be good to at least pretend realism. I'm growing tired of the need for a cooking pot, this really hurts my immersion. We can craft backpacks from boar skin but will be on the brink of starvation without a cooking pot. This really, really must go as a prerequisite. Reserve it for zombie soup and other fancy gourmet. And while we're at it, we need more options to start a fire and/or more lighters at most houses. Yeah I know, this has been mentioned a thousand times. It's just hard for me to understand how a guy who tans cow pelts cannot operate a magnifying lense or just use two sticks. All in all, the patch is great, but without some survivalist fixes and improvements the goal of my game is how to secure a steady input of 'energized' for the inevitable healing I need with the current zombies. And it turns out that without pumpkins I'm simply royally fucked.

    How was your Day(Z)?

I played on a private HC server today. On HC I play in a way that I don't use any canned food and drink, everything must be hunted, farmed or gathered. I must say this kind of play has just become super challenging - there is no rain so you need bottles to water the plants, fish are broken and yield only guts, the bow doesn't work and the animal AI is way better now. I tried to stalk and kill a cow with a shotgun, but to no avail. I lost a boar in the woods and I only got down a deer because it was blocked with its antlers in a tree... :) When I was stalking the cow S of Berezino, 2 guys held me up. They told me to put my stuff on the ground and I was complete sure this will end with a bullet in my face. But seeing I have nothing worthwhile, they became more friendly and it turned out they're Polish (like me). They had a RAK and MP5K, so I'd say they're nicely kitted. They let me go without a scratch and went their way, while I decided to loot Bere for some ammo to my repeater. Found a bear trap, set it up and immediately got caught, lol. I tried to lure a zed into the trap, but it didn't work. Then I found a land mine... I activated it in a doorstep and played hide and seek with some zeds to trigger it. But it just wouldn't go off! So I figured the land mine is in the game but not implemented, you know like the wrench, vitamins, etc. And then I decided to run over it... I have no idea what I was thinking. Anyhow, it turns out the land mines work perfectly. Watch out there, guys! One additional result of the latest update - I'm kinda less scared of other people now. Maybe I haven't met so many, but the first question I have now is - do you really want to shoot that gun and get 8 zeds on your ass? Or maybe could we talk it out and walk off unharmed? I don't know about you guys, but I still haven't figured a method of dealing with the new zeds without taking any damage.

Matches spawn now after the hotfix. Before it happened, I did eat several raw steaks without geting sick, but I still wouldn't recommend it without the medicine.

Can someone please help me understand "persistence"

Does that mean that the tents will soon actually become, you know, useful? That's great to hear! Up until now the tents were minus useful if you weren't sure about the wipe. No mate, I'm not gonna make a mule, the lack of anything resembling even a smallest base (persistent for many weeks) is one of my bigger problems with DayZ and I kinda expect the devs to take care of it. I still remember clocking 20+ hours from feedshack to feedshack to find my first tent in 0.47 or whatnot, only to find out it can't hold its Wednesdays. Oh, the pain.

    Crafting Questions .55

Thanks for the tip as for the road flares! As for cutting seeds out - I'm 100% positive that it got sacked in 0.55. I tried to use several kinds of knives on several vegetables, all to no avail. What seeds you find must suffice! Try not to waste your pumpkins too much, especially as they take 4x4 slots now. One more thing - without matches, I resorted to eat raw meat. All in all, one my character ate 8 raw cow steaks, 2 raw chicken fillets and 4-5 spoiled green peppers. No sickness set in. Just sayin'. Don't try to do that without charcoal and antibiotics, though.

.55 loot, I'll just leave it at this.

My entire point was that it's kinda moot to discuss what would lie where in the aftermath of a zombie apo until we actually live through one. I can very easily describe a scenario where blood bags are anywhere but at hospitals. The same definitely goes for military gear. As for nettings at castles - throughout my close 500 hrs in Chernarus I learnt one thing for sure - absolutely any kind of situation can take place at any time with a non-zero chance. You say it makes zero sense? I say it probably happened dozens of times that a survivor was in the mid of ghillie making, got called for a rendez vous at the Devil's Castle, and subsequently got ambushed upon arrival. Hell, probably at least once this scenario happened two times on the same server within the same restart, leaving you a full ghillie set upstairs the Castle. Things of similar probability (i.e. ridiculously low) happened to me. But I didn't want to discuss the odds of finding nets at castles, which I just don't know. What I mean is the loot system must work properly in terms of gameplay, not meet anyone's layman, "methinks I know how apocalypses work", expectations. If the devs put military gears at military sites, that's fine by me. But if later they discover that this gives too much leverage to certain groups of players (or moves the heat too much to the West), feel free to put rifles in random farm buildings. Then let's pretend these used to be stashes for anti-government rebels. What's the problem with that?

.55 loot, I'll just leave it at this.

Yeah, that's kinda what I meant. "I suspect", "I think", "it would seem". Look, I even understand you in the way that maybe that would be my thinking if I were a dev. It looks reasonable enough on the surface, something you could expect. But look at it closer and you'll realize it is based on a wild, never-actually-proven assumption. Why on earth medical supplies would have a higher chance of spawning 2 blocks compared to 4 blocks away from the hospital? At least in a world with cars, where the staff can live in a different district? How can your first aid stash be in any way related to the distance to your local hospital? Do you think people are more likely to buy painkillers when they move close to a health care facility? I live in such an area and fail to see any correlation. Off the top of my head about seemingly absurd spawns - I wouldn't mind to find a military uniform and other gear in each and every civilian house in Tulga. Well, that's where the NEAF officers lived with their families, is what I would say to myself. Where's your system now? Of course total randomness will never represent this, but your system would not allow for this, either. I know, I know, people expect a lot. Rifles should be in barracks, because what soldier would take his rifle when sent to a mission. On a seemingly unrelated note, people expect to roll a 6 on d6 if they haven't rolled a 6 for a long time. That's what I think about people's expectations.
  21. Kirov (DayZ)

.55 loot, I'll just leave it at this.

I’m not going to defend the current loot system as is, i.e. as if it was the final release. However, I believe that what this system needs is changes, not a complete overhaul. I understand that people expect military gear at military sites, medical supplies at hospitals, etc. But I can very easily imagine a place where a smooth military evacuation leaves behind nothing but brooms and potatoes. Or a hospital stripped clean of medicine by the security and lower staff (or local junkies) within minutes. So, to the people who call upon “logic” when discussing the loot, I would say you’d be much more convincing if you stated your expertise in actual zombie apocalypses. Tell me about the details of zombie emergency procedures at your workplace and how they were followed through during a zombie outbreak. Are they orderly? How early do looters and scavengers set in? Be specific, please. Of course, any system like “any item can spawn anywhere with equal chance” is horseshit. But as long as we don’t get to live through an actual zombie apo, please don’t self-style as experts at it. So you found a fertilizer at a police station and you think this is stupid? Maybe it was a crucial evidence in a “he sold me a shitty fertilizer” case. Oh, but you found no weapons at said station? Please bear in mind that the outbreak took place DAYS ago, not at the last server restart. Yeah, tents at toilets don't seem like an everyday occurence. And sure, sometimes I make fun of the loot system myself. The abundance of compasses really gives me a pause (“where do you work? “oh, at 340 NW”). But really, I believe the devs could use more constructive criticism and observations instead of a general ‘fuck you’ they sometimes seem to get.
  22. Kirov (DayZ)

    How was your Day(Z)?

Yeah, gear is everywhere, it seems only the cooking equipment is broken (and I couldn't find a medkit, maps are also super rare). Right now I could trade an ammo box (haven't seen this one since 0.45) for cooking appliances. Various kinds of mags, weapons... just look where you didn't use to. Another thing I like - plenty of tents at last. Pity they still seem to disappear on Wednesdays.
  23. Kirov (DayZ)

.55 loot, I'll just leave it at this.

Actually, you would find a fuckload of brooms and potatoes at a military base. You can even say that you could feed an army with those potatoes, because that's exactly what they're for there. If it helps, you can come up with stories behind the loot, as I believe that's what the randomness is trying to mimic. An AK mag in a shitter in Dubrovka - we've got a sloppy deserter. A broom at the NWAF - maybe it belonged to the 'cleaning lady' who just tried to claw your eyes off a moment ago? I believe you can come up with plausible backgrounds for many different kind of loot distributions, representing various stages of panic and disorder following the military's falling back, which in itself could be more or less (dis)organized. So I guess what is really important about the loot is that it should work gameplay-wise, i.e. be not too easy, too hard, too monotonous, etc. In short, it should make for a good game. The story behind can be made up in 10 minutes. Personally, I wouldn't call the current system 'broken', although sometimes it is a drudgery to go through 10 completely empty houses (I've always checked almost everywhere even before 0.55). And the full randomness of course is a bit too much, I do want at least certain tendencies and I do want learning them an important part of dayz know-how. This we can agree on. I haven't run into a loot bomb yet, but of course this means that the system is not without its problems. The things I want to stay are: 1) keep most/all buildings interesting, 2) make gearing up very/extremely hard.

    How was your Day(Z)?

As above, try to move stuff around your inventory. As to the kcal yield of apples - it's not that much, but still way more than berries. When I spawn, I'm not above eating 15+ apples before I move on. Sure it is some time of F clicking, but is usually enough to get some farming/hunting/fishing gear, and respawning due to starvation wastes your time even more.
  25. Kirov (DayZ)

.55 loot, I'll just leave it at this.

I love 0.55. A very intense experience, usually reserved for PvP. I make use of items I used to throw away, like charcoal or heaters. As I haven’t learnt yet how to kill zeds scratchless as it was the case pre-0.55, right now I’m actually more scared of them than of other players (a zed will hurt me, but a player will probably have either a gun or ammo, never both ;) ). I back away from plundering goodie buildings when I see a zed roaming outside. I jumpscare and curse aloud when a zed spawns right behind me. Mere staying on high blood is a tough quest in itself. I was mortified to see that you cannot retrieve seeds from pumpkins anymore. I’m not going anywhere without my farming gear. I feel I need to think long-term yet stay as vigilant as I can, even if it’s a small village. In short, I can finally play a zombie survival game. Oh, one more thing – this may be petty of me, but I love to think about the whiners who complain about starvation and loot. I like to imagine they do it in high pitch squeals. We all knew the day will come when DayZ becomes a zombie survival game, because that’s what it says on the intro screen. We all knew it will be resisted by people who honestly believe that apocalypses are meant to be a sniper/camper fun and they don’t happen more often only because the grown-ups are so lame. I’m looking forward to bid them farewell, but not before I bask a little in their lamentations. Like the poster above, I only hope the devs will remain adamant on the changes. Seriously though, does anyone have a light? 8 hours into the game and not a single match.
