Will we be able to tame wolves, falcons or other animals?

I remember you from the other topic so I'm gonna give you a credit and just assume that you had a really rough day at your work today. You probably didn't mean what you wrote. -
Will we be able to tame wolves, falcons or other animals?
Kirov (DayZ) replied to Salty seadog's topic in General Discussion
I'm not sure if I understand what you're saying. That wolves wouldn't attack people, let alone run up to gunshots (!!!) is a no-brainer. The best we can do is hand-wave it as some kind of the Virus effect. But if you're implying (are you?) that wolves could be tamable... well, I'm not a wolf scientist but this sure seems far-fetched. Of course, there is that German guy who runs with wolves and is even considered alpha by one pack (although I read many times that the alpha-beta-etc. hierarchy is a myth and it's actually more family relations), but still, it's not like the guy is a beastmaster who can unleash a pack of wolves on some sleepy village in the mountains. The best deal he gets is his cut of their kill. Wolves are sure as hell fascinating animals, but if in DayZ they were any true to reality, only few lucky people with +5k hours under the belt would actually get to see a pair of glowing eyes in the darkness. At least that's my impression based on several super duper cool documentaries I saw. And the other day, someone on this forum posted a track record of people killed by wolves. I don't remember the figures, but they were ridiculously low. On the other hand, aggressive wolves don't hurt my immersion more than the Morphine, which is clearly modeled on some Diablo's Potion of Limb Restoration, and apparently I'm the only one who complains about that. So maybe we can keep some 'unrealistic' things for the sake of cool gameplay. I like hunting wolves, I got headshot by one of them yesterday and I'm moving out to get my revenge soon. But although the 'bad wolf' story is a myth, their running to gunshots is beyond ridiculous. BTW, I wonder what the bear will be like. -
So I log in on the slopes of the Devils' Castle, testing less-than-top-notch weapons against wolves (I know the shottie is the best but I really want to try out most civilian ones). I hear howling in the distance, I go prone and stop moving immediately. However, the wolves appear to have some ridiculous spotting capabilities and soon the whole pack converges on me. With my shotgun, I get 3 wolves, including the leader. 3 other wolves run away dowhill (I don't know where's the 7th). I switch to AK74 and manage to land some hits but fail to make a kill (5.45 ammo seems to fare poorly against animals). I get back to my kills, just a few steps, not wanting to lose my trophy steaks in the forest. I quickly skin the 3 kills (really taking only as long as 3 skinning animations) and run back to pick up the chase. Soon I find the 3 escapees... or rather what's left of them. I find 3 wolf pelts and wolf pelts only, slightly farther from where I last shot (but failed to kill) the wolves. I'm 100% sure that there were no shots or other sounds of fight like wolf whimpering. I'm 100% sure that if there was any killer, he wouldn't have time to kill and skin the wolves and disappear before I fwas done with the first 3 wolves and ran back (I had high ground and could see the entire hill slope). Of course I scouted a wide area around but failed to see anything suspicious, not a single bone. So what happened? Yet another 'because dayz' situation or does the Predator lurk in our forests? What's actually the story behind the Devil's Castle? Now that I'm writing it, it comes to me that on the same private server, for two nights in a row I would find human steaks and remains at various spots in Vereshnik, like it was a message. But I'm sure it's a coincidence...

Yesterday I put cow and deer steaks in the pot and the deer was done faster than the cow. Need more testing with that.
-
Emuthreat, you look like a man in the know with the issue I have here. I quickly noticed that cooking times (and canister lifespans) got longer (right now it's ca 1:15min for one pot). I saw some variations but attributed these to my poor timing. It was only tonight when I was cooking cow and deer together that I discovered that we have different cooking times for different kinds of meat. Did you time these or any other times related to cooking? If not, will you care if I get the results? So far I know that it's some 15 secs to warm up a pot, then it's 1:15 for at least cow and wolf, and a large canister lasts for some 15 minutes, or 12 pots' worth of food.

Will we be able to tame wolves, falcons or other animals?
Kirov (DayZ) replied to Salty seadog's topic in General Discussion
Sure, OP mentioned wolf taming but I guess we can talk about getting stray dogs to follow you, as well. Horses would be cool, too. And I see no reason why we can't milk cows, strange that they found their inner wild heart after the apocalypse. As for birds, I don't know how falconry works, but if all our survivors are trained pilots of both heli and fixed wings, it would absolutely no stretch for me if I could falcon some falcons bred before the apoc by some Communist dignitary. In fact, his summer mansion could replace Tisy - falcons, horses, various breeds of dogs and you're good to go. ;) -

Will we be able to tame wolves, falcons or other animals?
Kirov (DayZ) replied to Salty seadog's topic in General Discussion
Any reason for such a definite statement? Is it a technical issue? Dog companions would fit the DayZ ambience more than aircraft and most boomsticks, so I'm kinda surprised why they are ruled out so quickly. -
Damn, and here I was still trying to put lard into that extra slot in cooking pots. Been a long time since I checked the wiki so I thought that lard is eatable in the same way that guts are eatable (i.e. eatable not edible). Wolf pelts still not tannable, right? Can we expect it in a hotfix or is it a long way ahead?

Does the fine placement help so much? I've always relied to F spamming, too.
-
Yeah, I think it was always like this. It's part of the reason why I never bother with tents, especially the civilian ones - there are so few places in Chernarus where they are safe (although you can find a few sweet spots if you look for them, both in the North and South). Obviously, you can pitch your tent IRL on much steeper slopes than in DayZ, but then again, you would be hardly able to sleep there comfortably or maximize storage area, what with everything rolling downwards all the time. Maybe that was the devs' idea, rationale behind it. One way or another, I stick to barrels as they can be made practically invisible. Tents are good for cheap stuff or items you barely ever use.

Will we be able to tame wolves, falcons or other animals?
Kirov (DayZ) replied to Salty seadog's topic in General Discussion
Animal companions were on the list some two years ago. Since then, I didn't hear much about it. There was some contradictory info about horses, too. Hopefully someone who follows status reports wil reply. I'd love to be able to tame animals but I wouln'd recommend to hold your breath for that. -
OK, so that's the explanation. I was thinking about it so much. I mean, I know how glitched the dayz reality is, but I thought I can more or less understand/predict what Chernarus throws at us. It still seems unlikely by a large margin, just think about it - someone chases wolves down the hill and gets three kills, and after a while, in the exact timeframe where the remains spawn but the pelts don't, I let go 3 other wolves down more or less the exact same path. And my pack was intact so it must have been another one prowling in the same spot. Unbelievable as it seems, I can't find any other explanation. "When we eliminate the impossible..." and all that. Still, wow. Thanks!

I have a question about (non)persistence to anyone that might know: 1) How long actually do all nonpersistent items last when dropped? Do they differ when it comes to item class (e.g. like backpacks, etc.)? 2) Things like garden plots and fireplaces seem to survive server restart. Does anyone know after what time they disappear? You can't 'store' anything inside fireplaces, can you?

Items That Don't Spawn Anymore
Kirov (DayZ) replied to Weyland Yutani (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
I'm another one to find no metal wire. Also, did anyone see cross bolts? I'd like to check how wolves react to these. -
Crafted vests, jackets and pants are great, although with the jacket, you may need to carry something to warm you up in the rain (a raincoat, heater, gas stove, etc.). As far as low profile is concerned, the leather backpack (not the one from the barrel but the one made of the rope, burlap sack and 3 sticks, as boars are still gone I think) is one of my favourites. It makes you completely flat and able to sneak around much better. When you go low profile, you get to learn that you need as many slots as you have. Right now I carry the high-cap vest, gorka, leather pants and alice backpack (so all the slots), and I'm still full and sometimes could use more room. The more you have, the more stuff you carry, but it's not always for the better. AK74 is easy to get and I think it's not visible from the front. A Skorpion takes only 6 slots. You can also go hunting with a shotgun, as wolves give you the courtesy of running up to the barrel. You need only a handful of stuff to enjoy yourself in Chernarus. The only military grade loot I really like to have these days is a spare grenade - the zeds would sometimes chase me like a cat up a watch tower. A boonie hat makes you look like a dork and saves one slot for the fishing hook, so there is that. ;)

I'm Kirov and I died to the zeds recently. The story is, I hate the new hotbar. Back in the day, I had each key assigned to all the items I needed and went for and I always knew what is where. These days, I change the key assignments sometimes every several hours until I get to 9 (is there the tenth? Even the alice backpack doesn't give me 10-key hot bar). Anyhow, my primary and secondary weapons along with mags are always at different keys and in the heat of the battle I tend to hit the wrong button and either panic or just lose sth important (double so if instead of changing mags, I switch from secondary to primary and of course this makes my secondary my new primary and my primary gets lost in the grass and sometimes I hate you DayZ so much). :) Furthermore, recently my broadband seems to get worse and I experience even worse desync with the zeds than other players do - sometimes it resembles the two vehicles issue in 0.59 like teleports, invisible/delayed hits, etc. These two things combined, and being tired, and carrying rags in pants, and I lost what started as a casual shooting fun with the zeds at the Novo mil tents. A weapon lost, a weapon jammed, a broken leg and ruined rags later, I bled out to death with no other players in sight. Thank you for allowing me to share this. I feel better now. I mean, we all want the zeds to be actually dangerous, but we kinda never believe that they're gonna pose a threat to us, amirite?

Any official opinion regarding a gamma exploit fix?
Kirov (DayZ) replied to exwoll's topic in General Discussion
Thanks for bringing my hope back. The only reason I stopped playing the night is the knowledge that I'm probably the only one on the server not using the gamma exploit. Now I think of it, I remember that there were problems with light sources, like the gas lamp and torch basically made you see only the gas lamp or torch itself and even without the exploit you were better off without any light. I sure hope this gets fixed and people will actually have to use light sources. I understand vision accommodation but it is not how it works in real life. OTOH, the head torches were "OP" as they were visible to other players only when you looked 'up', i.e. not when you were looting. The nighttime could use some tinkering, but I love the ambience of Chernarus by night and I'm looking forward to it. -

Kirov (DayZ) replied to CardinalSins's topic in General Discussion
According to a study by Scientific American, it takes ~100hours of practice to craft anything remotely useful and some 200hours of total practice to be able to say that you can craft stone knives. A stretch of imagination, sure, if your toon already couldn't handle literally any weapon, prepare fish, repair/operate cars/helis (soon), etc. And of course he's a field surgeon, why wouldn't he be? But when it comes to crafting - the more 'realism', the less craftable items, the relation is largely proportional here. I love the boar backpack and I just try not to think how you make one out of a boar pelt, a rope and three sticks. -

Kirov (DayZ) replied to CardinalSins's topic in General Discussion
If he'd said: "Guys, I die all the time, what gives", he would have actually gotten a heap of good advice, after being moved to the 'new player' section, of course. But when a noob comes here and tells me that I die after 20 minutes, facepalm is the only thing he's going to see. And I guess what pissed people off was that 'I'm going to back in a few weeks to check if you improved'. I'm stil puzzled why DayZ attracts so unusually huge numbers of self-entitled ass-hats. -
We need a winter mod now. Chernarus must be so beautiful under the blanket of snow. Also, long nights, wind howling, this kind of stuff. Also, the weather could be even more severe than it is right now, IMHO.
-
Most of the stuff we could wring out when they introduced temperature is not wringable anymore. At least I have no options for that. I tried with different items and I can't recall seeing the wring option for a long time. OP, make sure you know where you can put a fireplace indoors. If you get that, you can set up a working fireplace in a few minutes. Raincoats are also very important in this patch and I'm not above carrying an orange one in my backpack if I have no gorka. But yeah, hypothermia from rain within 20 minutes kills not only toons, but I imagine some immersion, too. I'm sure the end result will be less drastic, so don't worry. The first thing I would do is stripping gorka jackets of waterproofness. Harsh weather should push players towards survival-oriented solutions, not towards military tents. As it is right now, you just grab a gorka and you can go back to your 'sniping' like it was 0.40 all over again.

Kirov (DayZ) replied to CardinalSins's topic in General Discussion
No, you die shortly after you spawn. Seems that you're just learning how to navigate the game - make a stone knife, know when to avoid/engage zeds, create craftable items, know the map and know where to explore, etc. It's okay to be new to the game and it's very satisfying to learn all the ropes. I so much hope that we'll get more threads like this. It's a sign of good progress, devs! -
ISSUE WITH WOLVES!!! MUST READ!!!!
Kirov (DayZ) replied to noobgamer99991's topic in General Discussion
I know there are people like the OP but a part of me just refuses to accept it. Combat log to freaking wolves (and yes, I died from them too), get killed, hop on this forum, fail to even make up a plausible 'going-to-bed' excuse for combat log (and it was bound to earn you shit from us), fail to ask what's up with the wolves or is anyone else bothered by this issue, shout at and whip the devs like you got a majority stock in BI, then fail to acknowledge that you've overreacted and probably should have rephrased your rant... Sometimes I wonder what's going on in the heads of people like you, OP. Usually I don't indulge in personal disses like that but you made me click this thread with your "wolves, must read" shtick, [later deleted]. Now do what you are wont to do and log out from this forum. -
Come one guys, the man doesn't deserve that shit giving. KOS or not, at least he tried to engage in/disengage from a conversation in a civilized manner. Considering all the shit on this forum, he's a gentleman. At least after the discussion I don't ask myself "why TF did I even start this again?". ;) Usually with the KOSers here, you just know they are 12yo troubled kids and they waste your time both in game and here. Take care out there, mate, watch your back, maybe spare the next boonie hat wearing apple picker. ;) You seem reasonable so don't stop hanging out on these boards. I hope you all found some time to play DayZ this Christmas! It's enough to refrain from apple picking and suddenly the game's much closer to the feel I expected it to have.
