agree to both, but yes: alpha. Also, ED (yes, that's eagle dynamics) has tree draw distance up to and probably past 8km and you can play with quite a lot of options. It's a military / flight sim at it's core but the graphics are quite comparable to dayz imo, the background sim is probably a little less engaged than in dayz (with 64players + zombies / pathing + animals / pathing) compared to maybe 100 units total and physics only being modelled for maybe 50%, but i take games like this as a benchmark for saying that it's quite possible to have draw distance much farther than what we see here. But then there's the issue of the new renderer to come, optimisation which has probably only received a basic once over at this point given the high CPU dependency of the game, and a whole litany of issues to fix tweaks to be made and developments to come. I don't think we should put DayZ up on a pedestal or start hyping things up in our own head, but given other games ability to use new and innovative software tricks to model more expansive and higher fidelity worlds, i also don't think we should brush issues off as impossible (but only in dayz will you find the 'graphics guys' discussing draw distance for grass sprites as a serios point of issue). Gotta love DayZ.

I can appreciate the comment, and it holds true for certain games, but I still think that games like DayZ are to be judged on their player base (and yes, if people perceive it as past prime then they may not play, hence the cycle begins). But games like BF Bad Company 2 were leagues ahead of BF3/4 and any of the expansions (did bc2 even have expansions???) yet people moved on to the new glitz and glam, suckered in by Machiavellian marketeers and the weight of their parents pockets... If there are several servers to chose from, and at least one I can always join with 30+ people i could care less if DayZ becomes a niche game past it's prime. And i'm sure BI doesn't mind too much having already banked 60odd million. But yeah, i really hope DayZ community grows, and perhaps vanilla +/- mods will allow it to flourish. Also: I know we DayZ crowd are a proud and patriotic bunch (and we won't mention those other bunch of games named as if they were viruses and such), but I still think there is a vaccum of competition in the genre (zombies or without). If there's no competition and a market for it, well that should give us a few years at least of play before someone else can snap up a sizeable share of the playerbase.

is the roadmap and estimated Beta times still accurate?
q.S Sachiel replied to d.walker43's topic in General Discussion
hmmm, i thought the official line was still beta not before Q1 2016, but this may have changed. I know that Hicks as stated that he anticipates certain features to be pushed back 'no more than (several) months' as per the twitch release but he may have been indicating a different timetable than beta. Ultimately yeah, as others have said: after 4 years or so of waiting and supporting the game, the last thing anyone wants to see is a rush to market product with less polish and less features than what people expect (given the community has members quick to bemoan 'QA' and feature standards). just pretend GabeN is running the joint to Valve time and let the warm tingling sensation rush up your spine. It will all come when it comes :) edit: Also keep in mind that Beta will bring about a whole new set of challenges for DayZ. If taking the literal interpretation of beta as 'feature complete:begin polish' well, that means that a pandoras box of tweaks, changes, additions/subtractions and associated bugs/glitches will pop up more frequently (i anticipate), so it's not like Beta is this golden chalice that will taste good and fill your belly. It will probably be much of the same for at least the early part, i expect, only with a more visible light at the end of the tunnel. -
touche on hotbar compas placement showing bearing... beans for you two (and others overlooked). Does this mean that it updates your bearing in real time then? As an alternative to making ghilli's invisible (not render) at distance, you could re-render them as something else like a rough tree outline. This would of course require a new animation (unless you want a 'floating' sprite hovering across terrain at distance) and would probably cause some loss of immersion/act as a spotting cue for people moving in and out of the draw distance (making the render 'pop' from dodgy bush to actual ghilli render)... There's probably a few things in there you could add, but i'd argue that forest ghilli should be ineffective at grass/urban/barrent etc, and options could be made to tailor your ghilli to that terrain by gathering items or applying different paints for example. But this is all more work, arguably unnecessary given that ghillies tend to hide in clusters of trees anyway, and they survived well in the mod with similar issues. Silhouette and blend are still the two most important features of concealment at the moment.
-
yeah that is a handy trick to get a more accurate bearing, but it's still tedious to turn, tab, rclick, inspect ; turn tab rclick inspect... The compass can be quite a powerful tool, more so when combined with other tools such as dividers, maps, etc... This cannot be done at present and i do find it frustrating despite rarely needing to use a compass edit: on teh subject of draw distances, etc.. what about IDtech supertextures? :P There could be better quality ground textures to draw at range and ignore the grass so as to provide a better standard of basic blend to ground.
-
Hi. The compass is broken and despite being a 'tool to be used' it cannot be used the way it is actually meant to be used. The current implementation of the compass (as just an example) is akin to using a hammer to cut down a tree. Yes it's a tool but no it's not meant to do that / that way. As pointed out, the ARMA compass popup is aligned to your characters direction and is not offset by some random and unknown angle, is functional immediately and doesn't have all the useless bells and whistles of that in DayZ. I believe you missed the crux of the point though, in that a rubuttal was made to the remark of ghilli suits being completely useless and to appease the KoS scum crowd, while there are numerous 'functional' items in game that do not serve their purpose well or at all (making them non-functional). The very fact that a person needs to work for a ghilli, work harder to stay alive with it, and continue working harder than without it, to maintain it; it's rarity and scarcity; and the emotion that it invokes in other players would legitimise the Ghilli's purpose, functional or otherwise. If people went nuts over a purple party hat that took a week of scrounging to make, i'd shoot every sob i saw with one, just so that i could be king of the shitheap.

TwitchCon - DayZ (Tisy Mil Base, Little Bird, Beards)

I'm anticipating shade cloth to be introduced ala ghilli creation once heli's 'land' so to speak. -
All you Hardcore players packed it up and left?
q.S Sachiel replied to infiltrator's topic in General Discussion
There never were any 'hardcore' players. This is why they (arguably) needlessly changed the 3pp camera, because all anti 3pp crowd who played on 3pp servers exclusively complained about it. Now that's hardcore. -
So... 90% of them you DID killl because you could see them and you let the rest go like some strange catch and release program? Or you only think you saw 90% of them? Maybe there was a ghilli convention on, with thousands of them moving about you, breeding, and frolicking in the spring air. How do you know you get 90% of them if you can't see all of them? Also what does lack of electricity etc... have to do with building a suit made from torn up strips and netting with the odd bit of duct-tape and CFC laden aerosol?.. If i were to tongue your mouth, i get the distinct feeling i'd get a sharp tang of salt. You're complaining and grasping at straws with the 'value added statement' because by that logic we'd only have the option of mountain & hunting backpacks (all other backpacks are poor in comparison therefore do not add to gameplay), the multitude of melee weapons will be removed (lol stupid fire extinguisher, where is fire for make spray white foam at?) etc etc etc... Sandbox game: populated with things that drive their own pupose. Dont make me tongue your mouth now...

Kicking from Vilayer server IS ALLOWED.
q.S Sachiel replied to deevote's topic in General Discussion
I'm sorry for being blunt, but this is idiotic logic. If you dont' understand why... well, i'm sure you can read into the undertones of my post. Alternatively, you could just send me your money seeing as you are so easily parted from it. I mean, you're advocating spending money on something unnecessarily because you spend money on unnecessary things right? Cough up chap. But this is all getting quite off topic. Report the servers as per the multitude of posts from Boneboyz directing such actions. I'm quite surprised he hasn't weighed in on this yet given his thirst for virgin blood enforcing the law. -
New weapon mechanics - 23rd of Sept Dev blog
q.S Sachiel replied to preacherlr's topic in General Discussion
I really hope this doesn't complicate things un-necessarily. It works well for my 2 hands in real life, but navigating the keyboard to perform basic functions that could easily be bundled together into a single animation, well i find disturbing to be quite honest. And i swear to god, if i see additions to the scroll-wheel there will be blood... But selective fire mode should be a good change, for the few weapons that it will accomodate, if it is to be included. -
Did I do something wrong? Sniping in the Airfield
q.S Sachiel replied to FrigginTommyNoble's topic in General Discussion
I've done this before too, and i told the guy much like you did. But then i shot him as soon as I felt he was not able to retalliate, as I'm superstitious about the niceties of people in DayZ. There's no cause for him to turn on me or stalk me now because he's growing worms. Leave no witnesses where you can, and if someone makes you reasonably uncomfortable or i get that belly feel, let slip the dogs of war and kill everything that moves. Honour and a misguided sense of trust died long ago. The only people i put my faith in are those who catch me when I'm tired of surviving. -
White armband, what do they mean to you?
q.S Sachiel replied to MadMcardle's topic in General Discussion
Those trying to distinguish themselves from the rest are obviously either a threat to be removed, or a weak target. Cut down all tall poppies, and make the world a better, more homogenised place. *smallprint* offal, entrails and other waste products will be processed into tallow and futher homogenised to be used in supplements to the master race (kos). Peace through power! -
Kicking from Vilayer server IS ALLOWED.
q.S Sachiel replied to deevote's topic in General Discussion
The fact they spelt server own(er) wrong twice suggests it's a strange form letter with some IT monkey pressing the 'deflate issue' button on their end. Sounds like they could give two shits. -
in my experience if it's 90+ seconds no message received the server has ceased and you should retry or find another. edit: 666 posts. woe betide ye, oh mortals.
-
I know there are different hosts, so it would make sense if it's their side that the times don't marry perfectly. If it's client (renter) side then there should be even more variance.

server hopper detected -_-. *dispatching hounds* In all honesty i don't know, but i think it is different between public and private. Haven't payed too much attention since .58 dropped, but i'm pretty sure (assuming your NZ) that PIPSI / HIHB or some of those servers restart every 2/4 hours... public may be different too. Standby for better information (and attack dogs).
-
Yeah i spose, but you can farm, and i'd say hunter-forager as 'producer'. I don't believe you need a fiat currency for that system though, barter and commodities trade is the foundation of any market economy. I guess what i was getting at is that dayZ is attractive, and the core of its being exists upon a lack of regulation and control (at least centralised). Also @ Aerospace: they'd probably domicile themselves only to be quickly conflagrated with petrol.
-
As others have said, this game - and what i expect the apocalypse or any cataclysmic event - brings a pure market economy. Bandages may be one of the better examples when you're fine they're worthless, perhaps even negative value because they take up space (though you'd be mad not to carry a stack) but when you need them, and don't have them, the seller can dictate whatever price they need. (this is where KoS plays a role ;) )
-
Oh, ok. So you have no excuse then. Seeing as you've got the language part down, but seem to lack either the social or cultural toolkit, here's a free tip: [metaphor]You sell more product when you don't belittle your consumer base.[/metaphor]
-
Lol, calling someone small of mind when they ask a perfectly polite albeit direct question is not an attack? Maybe it's just a Croat translation issue, no? And just to add a degree of directness myself, self justification and telling people 'don't worry its fine i've checked it myself' and being the supposed creator is called 'conflict of interest'... I'd wait for a more objective review personally before trying this software package, but I'm sure there will be front-runners willing to blaze the trail for those less quick to take the jump.
-
hold onto the izh. but really you're comparing a meat cleaver to a chopstick with akm vs blaze. Unless you wantto RP or give yourself a challenge, then the choice is obvious.
-
please guys... we already have a rejoin countdown and private hives :(
-
Does this mean that DayZ is progressing along a more PVP oriented vein, and if so, how do the developers expect this avenue of development to affect the production process as a whole?

We Dedicated Few: A Guide to Debug Island
q.S Sachiel replied to Tatanko's topic in General Discussion
Sounds like the admin wanted your stuff :) Should write a letter laced with passive aggression stating that you were setting up the SCUD so as to nuke their asses into oblivion. Still though, I'm appalled that private hives have encouraged these kinds of behavior... That and some sweaty nerd admin is obviously pinging his map, watching every player in the server...
