Or even alien robot Nazis? What about the Fallout series? Sure, there are mutants (super mutants), zombies (feral ghouls) and monsters (mutated wildlife), but I think the main antagonists in most (if not all) of those games would definitely be raiders and various forms of bandits, and even random assholes you encounter. In short, other people. I tend to agree; I'm just hoping that, once they figure out and fix all of the issues pertaining to the zombies, that they actually have certain areas where there are larger groups of zombies congregated together. I think that would not only make it more challenging, but would provide for a more intense, entertaining experience, where you couldn't just run up and take 1 or 2 on at a time; you'd be forced to think about whether you wanted to engage them somehow or avoid them altogether, and, if you DID engage them, figure out the best way to do so, all with the persistent threat of random survivors coming along who may either decide to band with you and help you, or use the zombie horde to their advantage in eliminating you, such as firing off a shot to attract them towards you. I also agree with the point that Katana67 made above; I think the main reason that zombies aren't a real presence yet is because they want to make more progress before making them the true threat they're meant to be; right now they just want to test them out and see how they react to people, and vice-versa.

I did a search on the forums, and didn't manage to find any threads relating to this, so I decided to start one myself, in case anyone else has experienced the same issue I have. Before the last update, I used to find Mosins fairly often, all over the place; since the last update, I've found several pistols, mostly .45s, and even some clips (including a few 1911s, though it took me a while to find a clip for the one I took), but I have yet to find a single Mosin. I've found a number of SKSs and M4s, but those don't really interest me, as I don't own either of them in RL, though I do own a Mosin. So for me, it's not so much a functional thing as it is a personal collectible thing. Did they lower the spawn rate of Mosins with the last update, or am I just having that bad of luck finding one? I've run from the eastern coast North through Berezino to the NEAF, then west to the NWAF, then down South to the Balota AF, and I have yet to find one. I've searched various police stations and other buildings known to spawn them along the way, but to no avail. I have yet to enter Cherno or Elektro (for obvious reasons), so perhaps I'll try my luck there. Just wondering if anyone else has had as hard a time finding one as I have lately. I really hope to find one, because I plan on heading back to the spawning grounds and dropping some basic supplies for the fresh spawns (food & beverages mostly, maybe some rags & bandages and crude melee weapons also), and then posting up somewhere overlooking the area and watching for bandits that may try to grief them.

Thanks for all the info guys; I'll definitely try looking around those spots more. Well, like I said, I do have a 1911 with a clip and some extra ammo, so I should be fine there. Yes, the FNX has a larger clip (more than twice the size), but I LOVE the 1911 IRL, and have wanted one since before they added them. It's kind of the same thing as the Mosin: more of a collectible thing than functionality. I'm not really concerned about functionality so much, since I'm almost positive I'll probably get KoSed before really getting to use them anyway.
-
If you wanted it to be more realistic, you could always store your ammo in a shirt pocket or, even better, a tactical vest pocket (if you have one); having to scroll down to access the backpack slots makes it a bit more like having to take it off your back to get into (as far as ease of access goes), so I think it works.

How many of you find a handgun before ever finding a rifle?
Mancomb replied to jubeidok's topic in General Discussion
Before the latest update, I spent hours running around with a Mosin looking for a .45, and once i finally found one, several more hours trying to find a clip for it. Now, it seems backwards to me; so far, since the last update, I've found several pistols, mostly .45s, and even some clips (including a few 1911s, though it took me a while to find a clip for the one I took), but I have yet to find a single Mosin. I have yet to enter Cherno or Elektro (for obvious reasons), so perhaps I'll try my luck there. I know this may sound lame, but I'm kind of afraid to search there, as I'll almost certainly encounter a KoS punk, which would ruin my plans to patrol the spawn zones helping out fresh spawns. That is, unless I can manage to get the drop on them first, though I try to give them the benefit of the doubt and not KoS in case they're friendly, because I know from experience how much it sucks to get blapped by someone without ever being a true threat to them and not given the chance; of course, I also know from experience how much it sucks to have someone claim to be friendly and then shoot you in the face as you're dropping food for them. -
Great video; love to watch those types. What a way to go out there at the end, too, getting legged by a bandit and topped off by a zed.

So how much of a thrill do you cheaters get when playing DayZ?
Mancomb replied to Grimey Rick's topic in General Discussion
That scene? Form a movie called "The Upside of Anger", I believe. -
LOVE watching these videos. :D I definitely need to get a group together to play; too many hours of lone-wolfing.

Possibly the most constructive post I've ever read in a forum. How long did it take you come build that argument? The better part of a day, I would imagine. As for the OP, I could see it being viable, but Survivor_Ted (nice name, by the way; that's my name IRL :P) makes a good point. It will be interesting to see what the devs come up with later.

Did anyone else notice this near the NEAF?
Mancomb replied to zOmnicyde's topic in General Discussion
I've actually run up there to check it out; the interesting thing is, the pattern IS there...on the ground, apparently made up of bare patches of ground where there is no grass growing. If you run around it and get the right angle you can kind of see it from a ground view. -

He means, if you DO cheat and you admit it, you will get a basket of warm, fresh cookies. SO who wants cookies? -
I've actually run into this issue within the last couple of days with a pristine pistol flashlight I found; I removed the battery from my head torch (which worked fine), put it in the pistol flashlight, then attached it to my 1911. However, when I right-click the pistol in my inventory, there's no option to turn on the light, only to detach it. After detaching it from the pistol, I have the option to turn it on and off, but no light is emitted at all. I removed the battery and placed it back into my head torch, which worked fine, so I don't think it's an issue with the battery, unless the pistol light takes more juice than the head torch. I've also tried various key on my keyboard, but nothing seemed to work, so I'm currently at a loss to explain it.

Would You Support A Gun Shop Loot Location?
Mancomb replied to Katana67's topic in General Discussion
I actually like the idea, for most of the reasons posted here. They just make sense to me. As for a lot of the reasoning behind the NO votes, a lot of those have to do with the fact that the game is still in Alpha; once the game is finished (or possibly even before that), the need to worry about people camping certain areas and server hopping will drop, because there will be much more to the game than simply gearing up and running around looking for other people to shoot. Currently, that's really all there is to do, unless people become creative (search YouTube or the forums here for The Object). Once there is more to do to occupy peoples' time and energy, this won't be such an issue. And, as has been stated, the gun shop would simply be another building model where weapons would be more likely to be found, which makes sense. This doesn't mean that the spawn rate for weapons needs to change at all, or that more weapons need to be added; it would simply be another place where you'd be more likely to find them. That doesn't mean you necessarily WOULD, just that the chances are better. Yes, it would still make sense to find weapons scattered around, as people ran out of ammo and dropped them, for example, but I think having more locations with a higher chance of finding specific loot would help eliminate camping certain areas, at least a bit, because there would be more options available, thereby spreading people out more. In the end, it's important to remember that these are all merely suggestions, and there is plenty of time before the game is finished to see how things change, how things are added and removed, etc. As the game progresses further, many of these suggestions could make MORE sense, or LESS sense, depending on how the game evolves. -
Small, meaningless, yet rare items
Mancomb replied to IReadTheAgreement's topic in General Discussion
I found a bomber jacket the other day; didn't end up taking it because it didn't fit my blackout scheme, but I considered it just because it was such a cool find and it's the only one I've seen thus far. Also, I noticed, Rick, that you've got a pistol flashlight on your 1911; I also have one that I attached to my normal 1911, but I can't get it to work, even with a battery; there doesn't even seem to be an option to turn it on unless I detach it first, and even then it still doesn't work. Am I doing something wrong, or does it just not work with the 1911 for some reason? Also, to answer the OP's question, yes, I think it would be cool to have "collectible" items, as that is what many items I've found tend to be anyways (1911, Mosin w/ PU scope, etc.). I just think it would work much better if we had some place to stash them (I do that a lot in Fallout: New Vegas). -
Found an Engrave 1911, shoved a magazine in, later emptied that magazine into someone who didn't know how to breach
Mancomb replied to hannibaldaplaya's topic in General Discussion
I noticed you have the pistol flashlight attached to your 1911; I also have a 1911 (though not as crazy cool as yours :P), and I managed to find a pistol flashlight, but when I took the battery out of my headtorch and put it into the pistol flashlight, I couldn't figure out how to turn it on. There was no option that I could find when right-clicking it while attached to the 1911 in my backpack, only an option to detach it; when I DID detach it and had it sitting by itself in my backpack, I DID get an option to turn it on, but when I did, nothing happened. I've also tried all of the supposed hotkeys to turn it on, but to no avail. Does it just not work properly when attached to the 1911, or am I doing something wrong? I would REALLY like to get it working, as I would MUCH rather have a gun pointed and at the ready when searching around in the dark with a flashlight, just in case. -
There are a few places to find a busload of bodies like that, the easiest probably being along the road to Elektro.

Circling also helps if they are sprinting after you; if you circle around them, they slow down or stop to change direction, and when they start chasing you again, they're only moving at jogging speed. I have one attack me in a firehouse and, while I was fighting him, he glitched out and got stuck in the corner by the shelves, so I just ran off and left him there.
-
I like it too, and it isn't that I can't handle them; I'm just thinking that it's more logical now to try to avoid them rather than trying to fight them, because, depending on your skill level and your equipment, you may not stand a very good chance. At least the devs acknowledged that the zombies aren't supposed to be this hard intentionally, that it was a patching bug, and they'll probably adjust them later to be at least a little more manageable (I like them being a challenge, but they are honestly still a bit OP, considering 1 hit to the head with a fire axe has a lower chance of knocking them out or killing them than not; plus the fact that they can outrun you at a full sprint and hit you from 10-20m away). It's been like that since the start; they'll probably get around to that eventually, but I think at the moment it's a lower priority. Hopefully not lower than adding shit to the game. And by shit, I do mean poop.
-
I know, but I haven't been able to find any sticks, either. Trust me, if I find any, I'm definitely making a splint. I actually found some one my new hardcore character I made last night. <_< Couldn't take 'em, though, because I didn't have any pockets big enough. In hindsight I probably could have just carried them in my hand until I found a backpack or something. But yeah, as for my regular character with the broken arm, it probably didn't help that I was running around in the dark for the better part of an hour last night looking for either sticks or morphine. There was only 1 other person on the server, but I was still afraid to turn on my headtorch. ^_^ So it was hard to find anything lying on the ground. At least I'm energized, hydrated and healthy, thanks to a well I found, and I have plenty of bandages, so I should be OK, as long as I don't run into some stupid KoS asshole. >:( I think it would be cool if they implemented some mechanic where your character has a limp or is holding their arm if either are injured or broken; not such much as to really disable you (but perhaps; could add to the experience), but more of a visual indicator, so that people realize you're injured; that could actually make all the difference between someone wanting to just KoS you thinking you're a threat, or help you realizing that you just need help. Of course, an Unfriendly could use this to their advantage, perhaps, but chances are they would KoS you anyway, so it's kind of a moot point.
-
I had a couple of them run towards me and then suddenly die; I was on a slight slope (not a hill), so maybe #2 came into effect. At any rate, I was glad I didn't have to swing my axe. I also had 2 of them chasing me at the same time, lunging at me and hitting me from about 10 feet away, over and over again; I finally decided to do a couple of circles around them, and then keep running, and that seemed to get them off of my back. I currently have a broken arm that I've been fumbling around in the dark trying to find some morphine to fix, caused by another couple of zombies I fought at the same time; in hindsight I should have just run away, but at least I'm still alive (and the extreme pain of my fractured arm seems to have eliminated any sense of pain I had in my leg previously). So yeah, I would definitely try to avoid them if at all possible. If you're trying to explore an area, and you need to clear any zombies that may be there out so you don't get waylaid unexpectedly, I suggest luring them away and circling back; BUT, if you have a decent weapon (which, at this point, is either a fire axe or a gun) and think you can take them, then go for it. Just don;t b surprised if you need bandages and morphine afterwards.

I understand why you tried to solicit help, but I probably would have just gone off on the guy you were going for; you ran around with them long enough that he didn't seem to see you as a threat, and you had a few opportunities to get him. I probably would have told him to come up to the top of the police station to get a view of the guys in the woods, and if/when he did, chop the fuck out of him with the axe.
