Wallets and Player Identification - Dog-Tags and Russian Ruble -
Mancomb replied to TrampledByTurtles's topic in Suggestions
I really like the wallet idea, though I don't know about having the STEAM profile info; I think just the in-game character info would be better (name and picture can be generated the same as the character name and model), and like you said, the other info can probably be reasonable estimated (not that it would be important enough to be extremely accurate). As for the dog tags, it's also a neat idea, though maybe more complicated to implement. Same with the money, and I'm not sure what use the money would have, unless you use it for something other than it's intended use (lighting fires with bills, using coins as slingshot ammo, etc.). -
AFAIK, yes, but don't quote me. Again. :P

Every so often you meet a player that changes you. This is Michael.

I had no idea this could happen; certainly explains a lot, though. It did the last time I tried it, but it took a bit of running around and kiting to get the zombie high enough up on the hill for it to work. Also, something to add to this, keep in mind that zombies CAN use stairs now; I was playing the other day and entered a house and went upstairs; I turned around and saw someone coming up the stairs at me. I thought it was another player at first, but then saw that it was actually a zombie. So just remember that stairs can no longer save you.

Did you try going into your Video settings and back out? I know that's fixed similar issues for me before.
-
I would think it's a bug; I can't really think of the benefit this would be to a hacker, other than disarming you before trying to kill you. Has anyone tried to kill you after this has happened?
-
Well, I didn't watch the first video really (the saturation just made it really hard; at least you know about the issue), but the second one was pretty cool! I liked all of the action, and I liked how you quickly transitioned from one scene to the next. I also liked the music; in videos of this type, I really like having a music track in the background, while still being able to hear the sounds from the game (and from VoIP) clearly (too many people that use music just lay it over the top of everything, so it's all you hear). The track also seemed very fitting for the action, for some reason. Well done!

Broken image. :(

For now, no reason to even attach the bayonet, as it serves no function when attached (though I did anyways too); but when it does, then this would be VERY ideal.

I once had painful arm (or leg; I forget which) and found some painkillers; I took them, and nothing happened. That was a while ago, though. ON an unrelated note, between the name LeeVanSpliff and the avatar of an Android hitting a bong (and the fact that I missed 4:20 driving home from work), I feel the irresistible urge to go smoke. Which I will. Because it's legal here. :D (woot for WA)

What gr8mghtyp00 said, and no, you can't die from it; it WILL, however, make taking a tinkle a bit problematic. And forget trying to take a dump. Best bet is to just find a new pair of pants and leave yours behind for someone else to find. You never know who might need a Badly Damaged pair of soiled trousers. As for painkillers, I don't think they actually do anything as of yet, but that may have changed recently without my knowledge.

So, to sum it all up: - Dean says DayZ will be on a new engine eventually - They start with the original engine (whatever that might have been at the start) - They modify the engine slightly here and there over time - Eventually, after enough modification, the engine they're currently using will morph into something new - DayZ is now running on a "new" engine Borrowing from the "new car" argument above: just like when you purchase a car and then proceed to modify it by replacing parts here and there, from the wheel rims to the body panels, when you replace everything, you're changing and replacing everything EXCEPT the frame that it's all attached to and supported by; the car may look, sound and even feel radically different from what you originally started with, but at it's core it's still the same car. Stock cars are a good example of this: they're still the same make and model of car that someone can buy at a dealership, it's just been HEAVILY modified to become a race car. The same can be said for this game engine: after all is said and done, it will likely look, sound and feel like something completely new and different, but at the core it's still the same engine. The exception to both of these example is if you were to replace even the frame of the car, at which point it really isn't the same car anymore, because absolutely nothing is original; the same can be said for the game engine. You can start with one engine, but if you completely modify and replace everything in it, at that point it ceases to be the original and has become something entirely new, because nothing of the original is left. For it to be an "upgrade" or "modification", there still needs to be something left of the original product, and I think that is what the case will be for the game engine: it WILL be heavily modified, but at the core I think it will still be the same engine.

I would almost rather just find empty clips and mags lying around, and hope that I found a weapon to use them in; not only would that be a bit more realistic, but would also make it less likely that people you encounter will be armed to the teeth, and would make you think about whether or not you wanted to carry it around with you. But I also agree that at least some of the pistols (and perhaps even other weapons) should spawn with a clip or mag, even if it's completely empty. I recently came across a 1911 in an ATC tower without the clip, and decided to chamber a single .45 round from my backpack into it, so that whoever came across it would have at least 1 bullet. I might do that more often.

Which apparently includes orange children's backpacks with purple pencils drawn on them. :P

make paper aroplane from the NOTES! and make message in the bottle
Mancomb replied to Shrub Rocketeer ™'s topic in Suggestions
I'll translate for those who may not have the patience or otherwise the ability to comprehend our friend, because I actually like his idea, and think it has some merit: I have a great idea for the notes: make a paper airplane by having a 'Fold Note' action on the mouse wheel; you could take them to a higher point in a building, like an apartment block, and throw them down for others to see flying or to find on the street around the city. For example: I make a note saying "Hello, I am trapped in the big apartment building in the city and I am a prisoner of the M4 bandit clan, who is guarding the door; please come and effect a rescue before they kill more, or I die of starvation". hen, throw it from the window, and maybe someone will see it flying, or find it later on the road, and, after reading it, decides to attempt a rescue. It doesn't HAVE to be for rescue; maybe just for fun, or to play a joke . Maybe say that there is an AKM drum magazine on the roof, and when they go to find it, they only find another note saying "HAHAHA JUST KIDDING". Or, you could make like 20 party invites and put the location and throw them around the city, then wait to see if anyone comes; or, if you're a bandit, SET A TRAP. Whatever your imagination can create; the point is, make it so you can fold notes into paper airplanes, and maybe even be able to put a note in a bottle, so you can throw it in the ocean and maybe someone find its on the beach further away. Also, make it so we can write messages in the BOOKS, NOT ONLY BEING ABLE TO TAKE PAPER FOR NOTES, BUT ALSO BEING ABLE TO WRITE IN THE BOOKS THEMSELVES, MESSAGES LIKE "HEY, THIS IS A GOOD BOOK; I CARRIED IT FROM BEREZINO AND READ THE ENTIRE THING, AND I ENJOYED IT. IT WAS A NICE STORY; PLEASE TAKE CARE OF THIS BOOK, ENJOY IT, AND MAYBE AFTER YOU READ IT, WRITE YOUR OWN MESSAGE AND LEAVE IT FOR ANOTHER TO ENJOY". These are just some ideas to make using notes more fun; what do you think???? -
I think fi it's already equipped and becomes ruined, you cans till use it, but if it's by itself, I don't think you can equip it.

That looks like the step chart for the Watusi. Or maybe the Hungarian Polka.

EXP - Map now shows the players exact position
Mancomb replied to gibonez's topic in General Discussion
I'm one of those who uses DayzDB, the reason being mainly because I don't want to have to hunt all over for several pieces of a complete map, especially when I've only ever found less than 5 total in the entire time playing DayZ. At this point, since it's Alpha and I'm most likely going to have to start new characters eventually anyway once it releases, I'm mainly doing it now so that I can find my way around quicker. Once the game releases, I may try going without it and trying to find pieces of a map, though, in my opinion, I think it would be better to have whole maps lying about, since you'd realistically be more likely to find them whole rather than in pieces; and it would make playing just a tad bit easier, enough that people wouldn't get frustrated as often, but not so much to break the game for veterans. I suppose you could still have pieces to put together, but having that as your only manner of having a map is, IMO, a tad bit ridiculous. They should be rare, of course, but still available. All that aside, I would also hope that this tracking bug IS just a bug; I like having to survey my surroundings and compare them to the map in order to establish where I am. I suppose, especially for now since I don't even use the in-game map, having it show just your location wouldn't really bother me, but being able to see others nearby? For me, since I'm not using the in-game map, and since it's so difficult to actually piece one together, I would be at a severe disadvantage, especially since someone who has the ability to see me on a map would likely be geared enough to make short work of me, and I'd have no idea they were coming. This alone is enough for me to be against having that ability. -
ideal settings for best graphics without losing fps?
Mancomb replied to d.walker43's topic in Troubleshooting
I have an HP Envy laptop with similar specs (though mine has a Core i7 @ 2 or 3 GHz, 16 GB of RAM, and an nVidia GeForce GT 630M 1GB alongside the Intel HD graphics), and I had similar issues; I really think it's mainly the hardware you're using. Along with the fact that the game is still in Alpha and has yet to really be optimized, you still need decent hardware to run the game efficiently. Your CPU might be a little under speed @ 1.7 GHz, and even though 6 GB is a decent amount of RAM, it might not hurt to get at least 2 GB more; and if the Intel HD 4400 is the only graphics you're using, then that definitely might be part of the issue (if not the issue entirely). Like I said above, my laptop also has Intel HD 4400 graphics, but it also has the GeForce card which would (at least it's supposed to) take over once an application that required it started running, and I still got fairly bad performance. Personally, I think your best bet is to either A.) play the game on a desktop system, as I usually do, or B.) upgrade your laptop to an actual gaming notebook, like an Alienware (for example). If you go with A, then check out my current PC specs below in my signature; using this hardware, I'm currently running the game on either Normal or High settings, with a pretty decent FPS (not sure exactly what my FPS; I'll have to check it). Like I said, the game hasn't really been optimized yet, so even higher-end systems probably won't be able to run it at max settings and maintain a decent FPS; once it hits Beta, then hopefully the optimization will come into play. -
To the "friendly" guy who killed me and took my MP5
Mancomb replied to Evaris's topic in General Discussion
Which is exactly why being part of a group is one of the best ideas, so that you have someone to watch your back (as long as you watch theirs). Lone-wolfing it can be fun in its own right, but, at least for me, it's even more fun when you have buddies to roll with. -

Mancomb replied to Evaris's topic in General Discussion
I get it, but how do I know you wouldn't be skeptical and murdery regardless? It's not that I'm afraid, it's that I'm being cautious and keeping the situation within my control; once you lose control of the situation, you end up dead. At least, that's been my experience. I get that the situation would be rather one-sided, but that's how you survive, by not letting anyone get an advantage over you. The majority of the time that I let someone hold their weapon freely, they end up using it on me. Why continue to let that happen? Besides that, if you really are waiting for the opportunity to kill me, that gives me even more reason to keep my eye on you and make sure you remain unarmed. Also, I don't always keep my gun out around other people; only those that don't feel right to me for some reason, whether it be how they're acting, how they're talking, etc., because they're more likely to try to kill me otherwise. That's what these types of people look for, are others who are trusting enough to let their guard down too much and then BLAM! Black screen. If they comply, and seem ok after a short while, I'll usually put my gun away as a gesture of good faith. Not that that hasn't come back to bite me in the ass, but more often than not, those who comply are ok. And if I were a threat, you'd already be dead in that scenario; the fact that we would be conversing would mean I don't have any intention of trying to harm you, unless it's in self-defense. Unfortunately, unless I know you, I don't know if your intentions are the same; and even then it's a gamble. -

Mancomb replied to Evaris's topic in General Discussion
So you're saying that you'd pretend to be friendly and shoot me the first chance you got? That's exactly what I'm talking about, and what the OP is talking about as well; people who pretend to be nice and then kill you the first chance they get. This is exactly why I do that, because I've been murdered too many times because I let my guard down thinking someone really was friendly. Everyone I've ever encountered who was friendly and trying to help others did exactly what I do; they never let their guard down for a second while I was near them. I've tried letting people just carry their guns in their hands, but it's far too easy for them to just raise it and shoot you. At least if they put it away, then you have time to react if they try to pull it out again. I'm not saying that it always works, but, for me at least, it's better than the alternative. -

In other words, if people thought they could get away with the shit they do in video games in real life, many of them would try.
