    DayZ's Win32 error: A reasoned response

I totally get it, and feel your pain, as I was one of the first users of XP Pro 64-bit (essentially the FIRST 64-bit Windows OS), and was likewise one of the holdouts when Vista was released; however, I eventually realized that, as an avid PC gamer, if I wanted to be able to keep up with the ever-increasing required specs, I was going to have to give in and build a new PC, including a new OS, which was Windows 7 Pro. One of the main reasons for this (besides the fact that I knew XP was going to be phased out) was the fact that XP can only support a maximum of 4 GB of RAM, and you have to tweak the BIOS a bit to even get THAT. With 4 GB becoming the bare minimum for many games now, that obviously won't cut it, unless I want to play the game on the lowest settings possible; but then, who wants to do that? I'm not going to spend good money on a game when I can hardly even play it; it's just not worth it. I know many people don't necessarily have the ability to upgrade their systems, at least at the moment, but I definitely think that, if you are an avid PC gamer as I am, it's definitely worth the time and money to upgrade your system, if only to ensure that you can play the games you want to play at settings that don't make your eyes bleed or make you want to rip your hair out. Hell, if you want, I can even help you find decent components for decent prices online. The system I'm currently using is outline in my signature, and that cost me barely over $1000 to build, and that was over a period of time, replacing certain components as I could afford to (though most of the build came with my tax refund a couple of years ago). In fact, the 2 HDDs and GPU I have listed weren't in the original build; I replaced them later as I obtained the funds to do so. It's just a matter of figuring out what you need the system for, figuring out what components you want/need, and then starting with the most important ones first (case, motherboard, PSU, CPU, RAM). Then, over time, you can buy a new GPU, or a new HDD, or more RAM, etc. So don't take this the wrong way, but I definitely think upgrading is your best option at this point; especially for DayZ, since the game is still far from being optimized, even for more current systems.

    Standalone updated enough?(since Sep '14)

I don't necessarily mean your connection (though that could have at least some part in it, even if your connection seems fine; it really only takes a couple of seconds of being out of sync to screw you); I'm referring more to the sync between you (or, more accurately, your character model) and your hitbox; early on, there were a lot of issues with the hitbox "lagging" behind the player, so that they could potentially be well ahead of the zombie, but the hitbox (which is what the zombies are apparently programmed to target) could be further back, allowing the zombie to hit you without being near you. This is somewhat similar to issues that FPS gamers run into where they miss a target even though they're aiming right at them, because the hitbox is in another spot. I haven't experienced this for some time, though today I did have an incident where I was looting a house and suddenly came under attack by an unseen entity; it wasn't until after I sprinted out of the house that the zombie actually appeared so I could deal with it. That being said, I'm very happy that the ability to traverse stairs has been added, and the ability to phase through solid walls has (almost) been completely removed. Just a bit more tweaking with the AI, and then some bolstering of their numbers, and I think zombies will finally be a viable threat; I, for one, cannot wait for the day where I have to choose between fighting some bandits and running to escape a zombie hoard. :D

That was likely due to syncing problems that were rather rampant back then; even though they were nowhere near you, your hit box probably got stuck at the doorway, which is why they just sat there and started trying to beat on you. As has been suggested, many of those old issues are either close to being fixed or are fixed completely. Just keep in mind that the game is still in Alpha, so it's going to be a little while yet before many of the issues are completely fixed, just as in any other game at this stage of development; the only difference is, most developers don't let you play the game until it's finished, so in most games you don't see most of the game-breaking stuff that we're privy to in DayZ. If you were to play almost any other game in its Alpha stage, you'd likely run into many of the same issues.

    Hardcoded 4 hour restarts?

I think those still exist; I think what Nex was saying was that, you can set the server to restart more often, i.e. the 1 or 2 hour restarts, but you CAN'T have restarts LESS often, like every 6-8 hours. Not sure, but that's what I got from it.

    zombies do what?

For a while, this was a huge issue; it was almost as though walls didn't exist. Then they managed to fix it (for the most part), as I discovered when a zombie chased me into a small house, and I then ran out the door and closed it. I ran around to the other side of the house and looked through the window, and the zombie was running around inside the room trying to get out. So it has been fixed, to a degree; I have, however, noticed that lately they seem to be starting back up on it again, so it'll probably get nailed down before too long. You still have a better chance than you used to inside of a building, but unfortunately it's still not 100% safe yet. Exactly; I think the hitting from distance thing might be desync, as well; I've been noticing it a lot more lately too.

    dead bodies should not dissapper

I, for one, would like to see some persistent bodies, especially now that persistence is active on most servers. However, the points raised above as to why they should despawn after a time are valid; my idea (one that I think might work well, if they can figure out how to code it in) would be for people that die, depending on how they died, to return as a zombie. Not only would this add to the number of zombies in a given area (especially if it's a hot zone with a lot of PvP action; imagine the hordes of zombies), but it would also allow us to actually loot a zombie once it's killed, since we can currently loot them, but they have nothing on them. If it were a former player that turned zombie, they would still have whatever stuff wasn't looted from them when they died, and it would still be lootable from the zombie corpse. Granted, most (if not all) of the items would likely be in poor condition, if not ruined altogether, but it would still be a nice little addition to the immersion. As it is, there are FAR too few zombies in the world, and I think this would help that; I know they plan on adding more zombies later, but when you think about it, especially after seeing shows like The Walking Dead and Z Nation where everyone becomes a zombie after they die (unless killed in the head), it kind of makes sense. It might be a fair amount of work, but if it can be pulled off, I think it would be worth it,.
  7. What type of video card are you using now? I believe all of those images are from the current rendering engine, but regardless, mine looks pretty awesome; I'm currently using an nVidia GeForce 660 GTX 2GB, with the game settings @ Normal/Medium with a resolution of 1920x1200. So, depending on what GPU you have, you might want to upgrade. Keep in mind, however, that the video settings still haven't been optimized, so the game may not look as good as you think it should, at least not yet.
  8. It's been a little while since I've played, but the last time I did, I simply circle-strafed around the zombie(s), making it more difficult for them to hit me since they have to turn around to do so, and aimed ABOVE their heads in order to actually HIT their heads (they may have fixed that since, I'm not sure); depending on what weapon you're using, it may take more than 2-3 hits to take them down, but if you just keep doing this, you'll almost always come out on top. In the event of 2 or more zombies, simply do the same thing, only in a wider circle, so that you can try to isolate the zombies a bit and get a little 1v1 time with them. Basically, what they said; also, as they said, simply running away is the best option; sometimes they give chase and actually keep up with/gain ground on you, in which case you simply stop, circle-strafe around them once or twice, then keep running. This will slow them up enough that you should be able to get away from them, because by the time they face you and start running again, you've already got a big enough lead on them that they shouldn't be able to catch you.

Well done devs. No, really, I mean it...

I was pleasantly surprised the other day when I went upstairs in a house, and turned and caught someone in the corner of my eye, startling me; I thought it was another player at first, getting ready to whack me, but when I turned and looked, it was a zombie. It was the first time one had followed me upstairs. :D They're definitely making progress. On a side note, I find it interesting that whoever uploaded that rim shot sound effect to YouTube didn't know it's called a rim shot. It just looks funny to see "ba-dum tishh after joke sound effect" rather than "rim shot sound effect". That's just me though.

Easiest way to find a tent?

Kill everyone you see until you get someone who has one. Seriously, though, I have been wondering where these even spawn; I've looked in a lot of areas and have yet to find one.

Adding a "Broken" condition before Ruined...?

    Seconded.

    Battle of the bandana

I agree; yours was far better. Oh, wait....
  13. Neat vid! I am wondering, though: was your gameplay that choppy, or was it just the video? Because if it was gameplay, I don't know how in the hell you're able to play like that. :D

Dogs and spiders and snakes? Oh my.

    Uhm, what happened?

What happened (and what has been happening, what is still happening, and what will continue to happen for some time yet) is the developers modified some of the game mechanics in an effort to find the optimal settings; this includes modifying zombies mechanics such as run speed, strength, etc., as well as determining what the minimum fall height should be to take damage, break your leg, etc. These are things that occur in every game that is developed; the difference is, most games you don't have the opportunity to play it until after it's finished being developed, whereas here, you're experiencing all of the bugs, mistakes, errors, etc. that occur in the early stages of a games development before they're ultimately fixed. The game isn't even in Beta yet, so there are going to be things that shouldn't happen and that make no sense; in fact, there's a message saying almost exactly that that you are required to acknowledge before you can even play the fucking game. So it's not as if you aren't being warned; if you choose to ignore that warning, that's on you. But everything should be expected, especially the unexpected.
  17. Indeed; see the guy in my signature? He was alive for a very long time. Operative word: was.
  18. Mancomb

    Uhm, what happened?

I was there yesterday and noticed no zombies; I thought it was a fluke or something. So there's really never any zombie there?

    Large scale battle?

In DayZ, battles aren't organized, they just happen at the worst moment possible.

    Blanks & Jams

If the AK in-game is anything like the AK IRL, then you ought to be able to beat it against a tree for 3 hours, throw it into the ocean, come back a week later, pull it out, load & chamber it, and be good to go. (Ok, a BIT of exaggeration, but still...) Indeed; my Mosin has yet to give me any problems, either. Granted, it IS in fairly good condition, and was when I got it, but proper maintenance and cleaning pretty much keep it there. I have to say, the Russians sure knew how to make weapons. I also completely agree with the whole "using rags to clean" statement; would be pretty cool.
  22. Mancomb

A friend of mine gave me this irl

I already have backpacks, headlamps, AND a Mosin to use for my planned Live-Action DayZ video(s), now I just need to get one of these cases! As am I! Angels Adamantine FTW!!
