This will likely be fixed down the road so that you either don't appear until fully spawned, or can instantly see and move when you spawn. I got killed the other day when I logged in because there was a zombie standing right next to me, and by the time I could react, I was pretty much dead already. All I had time to do was turn and look at the zombie, and then black screen telling me I'm dead.

Bad post; please remove.

"Kill on Shit". What a way to "go".

Let's just hope they implement it in such a way as to avoid having a bunch of trolls running around shitting on everyone/thing. It's bad enough having so many people running around shooting other players just for the sake of doing so; it'll be worse if said people add death-squatting to that.

What VoIP are you using? I think it looks kind of neat with the avatars for each person. As far as the video itself goes, a few suggestions: 1.) If possible, try to play (or at least record) in HD, so you can upload HD videos; at 480p, the video quality was fairly bad, especially in full screen (everything was blotchy and pixelated), and it was hard to tell what was happening, especially after you were wounded and the screen went blurry. 2.) For maximum entertainment value, try only recording action sequences, or editing out non-action sequences; the firefights were pretty interesting, but they were few and far between, and didn't last very long; the majority of the video seemed to be you guys running around and looting, which isn't very entertaining to watch. 3.) I liked most of the music, though a few times the music selection didn't really fit the mood of the action (such as towards the end); also, I prefer to hear the music in the background, with people talking over it, rather than only hearing the music and no talking. Helps to immerse the viewer in the action taking place. Beyond that, not bad! Just takes these suggestions into consideration, and keep at it!

I've found that, if you look UP just a bit (like, right over their heads) when attacking with melee (including fists), you're chance of scoring a headshot is much better (I learned this when trying to KO zombies with my fists; once I realized it, I was able to knock them down in 1-2 hits).

I think this is exactly how it should be implemented, if done so at all; having cigarettes negatively affect your stamina and ability to run, as they would in RL; the more you smoke, the shorter distance you can run before getting winded. Makes sense to me, at least. But, at the same time, there would have to be some sort of benefit, or they would be pointless; perhaps the ability to smoke while aiming, allowing it to calm you and steady your aiming ability? Just an example; there are others that could be made, I'm sure. Yeah, basically this is what I was thinking, or at least along these lines. I know that in Bioshock, smoking cigarettes increases (albeit slightly) the amount of EVE you have, while at the same time decreasing your health slightly. I think they could, if done properly, implement a similar sort of give/take mechanic with them.

I understand the point you're trying to make; you're trying to say (I believe) that the implementation of the mechanic could create new avenues of gameplay and provide various different types of experiences for the gamer. I get that, and I'm willing to bet that most of the people here get it as well (at least some of them do). The point that I (and many others) are trying to make is that, the potential for abuse by those that are simply too immature to handle it FAR outweighs the potential for meaningful gameplay experience that it could provide. All it takes is a handful of immature idiots (or even 1, in the right setting) to completely ruin these potentially neat and awesome gameplay experiences by abusing the mechanic and essentially trolling with it by contaminating every water source they can find, and essentially playing ONLY to achieve that goal, rather than trying to survive, as is intended. As it is now, people complain about others that simply play the game only to KoS other people that they happen across; the same people would essentially go from being KoS punks to shitting-in-water punks. While I agree that, if implemented in the proper way, the mechanic could provide an interesting addition to gameplay (e.g. being slowed because you have to void your bowels; ruining pants by shitting them, especially after dying; not being able to aim accurately because the sensation of having to take a dump is distracting; etc.), if not done properly, it would be far too easy to abuse it. Now, if they were able to implement it WITHOUT allowing people to contaminate water sources simply by deucing in them, then the potential for abuse would be dramatically lower, and it wouldn't be such an issue. But then, considering all of the OTHER ways that these sources can be contaminated and that players can contract disease, it wouldn't make much sense to have this mechanic and NOT allow such contamination to occur. So, in order for it to be implemented and NOT be a problem, they would essentially have to disallow ANY sort of intentional (or even unintentional) direct contamination by players, and basically only allow "natural" random contamination, which is out of the control of the players. But then, removing that ability for players (if it's even added at all) could also serve to detract from the overall experience, rather than add to it; this isn't to say that, if given the chance, these "poo punks" couldn't also do the same thing with animal corpses, or chemicals, or other toxic items, which would also raise the possibility of abuse, but then this would be even more reason to completely remove players' ability to negatively affect any type of water source at all. But then some may argue: if players can't negatively affect a water source by contaminating it, why should they be able to positively affect it by cleansing or decontaminating it? It seems kind of silly to have one without the other. Also, in regards to firing bullets or chambering single rounds into a weapon, the former has already shown signs of abuse, as I mentioned above, by asshats that seek only to shoot other players; as for the latter, there isn't really any sort of abuse that can be perpetrated by the mechanic, so that's really a non sequitur. I'm sure (I hope, at least) that you can understand why many people don't really trust the implementation of such a mechanic; it's not so much that people are "grossed out" or offended in some way; it's that they're worried that, in essence, adding such a mechanic could actually end up doing more harm than good, despite the intentions behind it. As I said, if it were implemented properly with a low possibility of being another weapon in a troll's arsenal (heh; sorry, couldn't resist), then people might be more accepting of it, and could learn to enjoy it. But as long as the possibility of abuse exists, the detriments outweigh the benefits. BTW, that graphic above of the various game models is hilarious, what with a pile of shit being right next to a butterfly.

This is when you pull out the magnum/sawed-off shotgun you've hidden somewhere on your person and literally blast them a new asshole. As for the rest of your post that I didn't quote, I pretty much agree. I am part of a realism unit in Day of Defeat: Source, and, even though we try to play the game adn run our unit as realistically as possible, we all realize that it IS a video game, and there's a certain amount of realism that just won't happen due to the game mechanics. I feel the same should be expected from this game. First off, there's all of the points being made about how this could be abused by (the relatively few; J/K) immature people that already have the game, not to mention all those that have yet to pick it up. It's inevitable. That's just a fact. Regardless of how "realistic" it would make the game, as many have stated, there simply has to be a line somewhere, and I think that may definitely be it. Secondly, from a programming standpoint, just the amount of time and energy that would have to go into creating something like that (and especially animating it) could DEFINITELY be put to better use elsewhere in the game (I think the current state of the game proves that). No sense in wasting so much time on something that will likely piss many people off and discourage serious playing to the point that it would eventually be simplified/removed altogether. There are plenty of other games out there where ridiculous players can get their jollies by teabagging people they've "pwnt"; we don't need to waste time that could be better spent fixing the zombie mechanics or implementing survival mechanics on something that will inevitably end up being so ridiculously juvenile. Serious gamers have to have SOME sort of multiplayer respite from all of that. Third, in regards to the realistic aspect of it, sure, it could create a more immersive experience, but, as many people have stated, so could a number of things that really just don't belong in a game, e.g. fapping, picking your nose and wiping it on a tree, chewing gum and blowing bubbles, clipping your toenails, moar fapping, etc. There is a point where TOO MUCH realism can break the experience, and, honestly, it's really just rather ironically unrealistic to expect that much realism from a video game, at least until holodeck-style technology is invented, where you really can't tell the difference between what's "real" and what isn't. This being said, it would be interesting if there were sicknesses and diseases that supposedly stemmed from fecal contamination, without there actually having to be turds floating in the pond, for example. You could simply have a message when drinking from a contaminated water source that says something like "this water tastes funny" or "someone has put poop in this water" (nod to the Morgan Freeman Dayz adventures), and then eventually become sick from it with actual diseases that stem from fecal contamination, e.g. e-coli (just as an example). Again, it's a video game, so there's going to be some sort of boundary for absolute realism, and I just think this would cross it.

I spawned on a normal character today that I hadn't played in a while (at least a few weeks), who I left sitting in a gas station building; when I logged onto that character today, I almost immediately died from a zombie that just happened to be sitting next to me; there was no fight involved, just me appearing, seeing the zombie, then dead. It made me wonder if perhaps my character actually appeared before I fully logged in, as was being attacked while I didn't know.

Doesn't really seem fair to convict him without proof. I've never run into this issue, but then, I hardly ever used a game protected by BattleEye, either. And what good would it do for someone to plead their innocence on the forums? That won't help them any more than an appeal would, and therefore doesn't make sense. It DOES make sense for someone to come on the forums asking the community if they know what could be causing something that they can't figure out, because maybe someone has run into the same issue (which, after doing some searching, it DOES seem to be a rather widespread problem) and can help them. Also, if I had run into an issue where I could no longer play a game, and was receiving no help to fix the problem and couldn't figure it out, then I might possibly buy another copy if it was cheap enough (and the OP said it was apparently on sale). It also makes sense that, having not figured out the problem, the second copy would also run unto the same problem. As for putting cheats on a flash drive, I NEVER cheat, and I'm smart enough to realize that. If you didn't know that, you must not be that into gaming. It's kind of a common sense thing. This isn't helpful at all and is therefore a useless post. I agree with this; I've seen this also. And VAC is a FAR more stable and secure anti-cheat system than BattleEye. So it stands to reason that BattleEye isn't perfect and faultless. Also, according to some people I've talked to and heard from, the BattleEye support staff doesn't exactly have the most professional demeanor. All that being said, it IS possible that BattleEye is detecting something somewhere on your system; I'd say your best bet at pinning it down would be to just scout Google (or whatever your preferred search provider is) for similar instances and see if you can learn anything. Beyond that, I guess try what blazed suggested; it may be your only shot. I would also heed Irish's advice; sounds pretty good to me. -
Here's a little story about an experience I had that just goes to show that it really doesn't matter what someone is wearing (in fact, if they're wearing hardly anything, they're probably a decoy): I started out near the shipwreck, so I decided to explore it to see what I could find. After doing so, I managed to find a blue checked shirt, a blue cabbie hat a blue backpack, some food and a wood-splitting axe. At that point, I decided I would just roam around and see who I could find, thinking that, if I didn't have a gun, I wouldn't be such a prime KoS target. I traveled for a bit, until I came across the smaller Northeastern airstrip; since I had run into other people almost every time I explored this area (or any other airfield, for that matter), I decided to take position a little ways away in the bushes and scope the area out to see if there was anyone there. After only about 10 seconds, I saw 2 people run towards the jailhouse building. A few seconds later, I saw them and a third person exploring the control tower. I could see that one of them only had a melee weapon as I did, and wasn't wearing any clothes (besides the default undergarments). At that point, I figured it was probably a group of friends that were just roaming as a pack to avoid being KoSed, and that they were probably relatively harmless. So I decided to approach the airstrip (cautiously, of course). As I did, the one with no clothes came around the corner of the jailhouse building and apparently saw me approaching, so I waved and said hello. He returned my gesture, so I figured all was well. I approached him and struck up a conversation. I saw that he had nothing except a UN helmet and a baseball bat (most of the people I've encountered wearing UN gear were helpful, so I assumed the same of him). He said they were just roaming around looking for stuff, and I said I was basically doing the same. As I was talking to him, I turned the camera to see one of his friends behind me with a rifle on his back and a fire axe in his hands, apparently at the ready, like he was about to attack me. So I turned and said hello to him as well, as as I did, he started strafing around me in a circle. This seemed suspicious to me, so I turned with him so that I kept facing him. He then put his axe away, so I figured I was out of danger. I was apparently wrong, because, as I continued the conversation, the nearly-naked one put up his fists and punched me in the head, knocking me unconscious. When I came to, all of my gear was gone (including my clothes), having been replaced with the UN helmet and the baseball bat that the first guy had. To make things worse, I was bleeding. Since I didn't even have a shirt to tear into rags, I decided to head into the jailhouse to see if I could find any rags or bandages. As I rounded the corner of the hallway, I came upon another person (I'm assuming the 3rd one in the party), who instantly drew his pistol and killed me on sight.

You could be right, but since I've already spent the money on it, and I'm a patient person by nature, I'll give it a chance. -
Wow, I haven't played in a while, and apparently have missed out on some things; all the time I was playing, I NEVER found ANYTHING in ANY of the military tents on ANY server. Must be something they added fairly recently. Or I just have bad luck.

gannon46: I love your ideas, and I agree that such ideas would definitely give the game a unique flavor (no pun intended...well maybe a little) and make it even more fun. The End.: You do have a point about unarmed players possibly being OP, but I think if it's balanced properly it could work. Also, I gave you beans for having Kurt in your avatar and sig (I'm a natural-born Seattleite). The old man also has a point. But then, I would expect wisdom from an old-timer. :D

Rolling Update Rev - 0.43.116251

DayZ mod = modification for a game that was already built, using that game's engine and resources Dayz StandAlone = completely new game being built from the ground up using its own engine and resources It's amazing how many people try to compare a full game (that's still in development) to a modification (that had a much shorter development time frame). Of course a mod that was essentially completed over a year ago is going to have more content than a full game that was started later, because it takes MUCH more to build a game from the ground up than it does to modify a game that is already finished. I can almost guarantee that most of the people that are complaining about the SA will be overexcited when it's finished; I already think the SA looks and plays better than the mod, even though it isn't close to being finished. While the mod is fun to play, it's still restricted essentially by the bounds of the game it's laid over, while the SA can break many of those restrictions because it doesn't have to follow the boundaries set by another game; it can set its own boundaries. That's part of what takes so long, since everything is built from scratch essentially and the devs are trying to find different ways of pushing (and even breaking) the boundaries set by the mod. I would much rather have devs take the time to put out a quality product than try to rush something out to appease the masses, and end up having a shit product. Developers get pushed into that all the time by big publishers, because the publishers just want to make money, and don't necessarily care about the quality of the product. People just need to learn to be patient (which, granted, IS hard in a generation full of ADD- and ADHD-riddled kids who can't focus on one thing for longer than 3 seconds). Think of it this way: you paid about $25-30 for access to a game that, when it's finished, will probably end up costing more than that, so you essentially got a discount. Not only that, but you get to play around with it WHILE it's being developed, not only witnessing and getting to play around with changes that are made during development that buyers of the end product won't get to, but you get to contribute and help shape the game through feedback and suggestions, something else that buyers of the end product won't get the chance to do. On top of all that, when it finally is released in a final version, you'll be WAY ahead of those who didn't touch it until they buy the final release, because you'll have spent so much time playing around on it during the development stage, so you'll know where to find loot, what areas to avoid, how things work, what gear is best, etc., while a new player on the final version most likely won't know most (if any) of that. So sit back, pop a few Ritalin, chill the fuck out and just enjoy the fact that you get to be a part of a game that is still taking shape (and, though progress is moving slowly, IS actually progressing, and in a very cool way). -
Do you treat players depending on what clothes they wear?
Mancomb replied to maninthewall's topic in General Discussion
For the most part, anyone I've seen wearing a UN helmet or beret seems to be helpful, as many people have also posted here as saying, so I generally tend to trust (at least somewhat) anyone wearing these. But then, there are also those out there that seek to fool people by doing the same, so there always has to be a least a small level of distrust based solely on attire; then again, people also try to fool others by being nice at first, then striking when they least expect it, so I guess you really can't trust anyone 100%. -
That would also be pretty epic. Not gonna lie.
-
That's a rather strong example to make, but you do have a point. But, still, I think it would be kinda of interesting to see it. It WOULD be realistic, as they would exist and probably be a lower priority (though still a priority for many), and would therefore be fairly likely to be found. Not really sure what (if any) benefit you'd obtain from using them, but the interaction alone would be kinda neat. Of course, I agree that it would (and should) probably take a lower priority in development, but still an interesting idea.

There are many things that should be (and eventually WILL be) implemented that can be considered important, but, in my opinion, there are a few things that should take precedence (in no particular order): 1.) zombie mechanics, such as speed, interaction with the environment (i.e. ghosting through walls), damage, numbers, interaction with players and other zombies, etc.; 2.) loot spawn locations & levels (where items spawn and how often); 3.) item interaction (many items that you can find & loot are essentially useless at the moment because they do nothing except take up inventory space); 4.) hunting & cooking interaction (more animals besides invincible rabbits that you can kill and prepare to eat); there are of course many other things that would be good to implement, but I think these few things would make a huge difference in how people currently play the game, and would allow for more diverse gameplay while we wait for more to be implemented, and encourage less people-hunting and more cooperation early on. Of course, the devs ARE already considering all of these things and working on most (if not all) of them, and, as monolith1985 said: However, as I said, in my opinion these few changes/additions would greatly change how people experience the game currently and allow people to enjoy the game more as they wait for more progress to be made. Of course, not being a dev, I can't really speak to how making these changes currently would affect development on their end, e.g. making it more difficult for them, but I think a lot of people would enjoy them, and it might encourage more people to check the game out.
