    Love the new damage system in theory, sounds exactly like what's needed and I hope it plays as well. I wonder if this will also be applied to AI, and if it would therefore be possible to configure the game in such a way that zombies would *require* a shot to the head, drastically increasing the threat even for experienced players without a gun, and making it more likely that a player would choose to use a gun rather than a melee weapon to deal with them?

    Right now the chance to get Kuru from eating human meat is very high. This doesn't reflect reality, where the chance varies depending on the quantity of and what tissue was eaten, amongst other things. Several times as a starving fresh spawn I've spied a corpse in the road and left it lying: Perfectly good protein that in all likelihood *shouldn't* give me brain disease as I'm only eating the choice cuts*, but I'm forced to leave it. Gutting and cooking it would've attracted attention too, driving interactions! Can't we dial it back a little? *Potential expansion of game mechanic?

    Kuru is too common!

    The last known Kuru sufferer died about a decade ago. It's a form of degenerative brain disease, and I think they may have used the term in the game files to refer to this particular disease. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, colloquially known as Mad Cow Disease, is a good example and it's transmitted in exactly the same way: There's a risk from eating any meat that carries the infecting prions, so if we're contracting it from human steaks there should also be a chance that we contract it from other types of meat, too. Either way, it's way too common for my liking.

    Of course; realistically speaking the second and third phases of Kuru are debilitating, yet we can wander around freely. Creative license completely granted as far as I'm concerned, it is only a game :) My point was largely surrounding interactions: Whilst currently eating human flesh has a high chance of the eater developing brain disease, the interactions that result from this are in my opinion less valuable than those that could be attained by dialing back on the likelihood of degenerative brain disease from human steak and further reducing the amount of ready made food available, including things like trees and bushes. An infected player who still has survival on their mind is surely inclined to avoid interacting with others due to the side effects, making the game feel more lonely.
  7. I'm sorry, but I find this post to be hyperbole filled and premature. Let's wait and see how it feels ourselves before condemning this change as "horrifying". Putting technical limitations aside, I see no reason why this feature couldn't become a server side variable.

    You said it yourself: In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with exploiting 3PP as long as it's on a level playing field for all players. The debate on whether the playing field is really level when we compare what you see lying prone on a roof and overwatching versus what someone on the ground sees aside, I personally would have no problem with any amount of "cheating" as long as any advantage one player has is freely available to all others, and that all players are aware that there is the *potential* for them to be at a disadvantage.

    I don't particularly like accelerated time. I think it'd probably make more sense if we were able to set the length of the day and night independently, and then we'd perhaps see more players willing to endure and love night time.

    Experience: The CCP Way

    Several topics have cropped up about attributes, experience, skills and talents in game, and I'd like to start by being clear on this: I am 100% against the addition of trainable skills, talent trees and "XP" in this game. However, I'm not Dean Hall and nor am I Bohemia, and I suspect these are things that as tried and tested mechanisms in other games are possibly going to make an appearance no matter what we anti gamers think. If we then proceed on the premise that these things are inevitable, in what way could we introduce them and not break the "feel" of the game as it currently plays? For that we need only look over at the only real present example of an anti game on the market, and one I know was an influence for the development of DayZ: Eve Online. In Eve, it doesn't matter how many times you repeat an action. There's no way to "respec" to suit a specific encounter. In eve you implant a skill into your brain and learn it as time goes on. That's real-world clock time; A skill can take anything from a few minutes to a few months to learn, depending on what you're training towards. Being able to do one thing in eve can often take several months of this passive training to achieve, and you need to sit on your ass and be patient. The time it takes to learn these skills is dependant on your attributes - and that's ALL your attributes influence. Given the fragility of our avatars, I can see a modification of this mechanic actually working. Let me tell you a little story... You and your friends keep yourself alive for many months, sneaking into Chernogorsk Central Library every day to read about hydraulics systems so that you might figure out how to fix a broken helicopter that you've discovered in the wilderness. Little do you know that a group of bandits has been watching you and your allies do this from the shadows, and have been ghosting you as you make your way between the locations - they too, patiently waiting for you to finish learning how to do this over the weeks and months. Finally the day comes - months of learning has paid off and you know enough about Hydraulics to be able to fix up the knackered systems on that old Hind you found. It's your ticket out of the hell that is Chernarus. Just as you finish your first test of the old girl's main engine, one of your buddies outside refueling you drops to the floor with blood gushing from his chest and a dozen hostiles come running out of the treeline. They've caught you by surprise and take you hostage! Shit, I should have been paying more attention! After cuffing all of you, they turn to you and your buddy who has been patiently learning to fly the helicopter and demand that you work for them or else they will kill every single one of you. You refuse, and a single bullet ends your first friend's life. They ask again, and again you refuse. Bang, another friend down. The bandit leader looks at you, and you look away in defiance. Bang. Just you and the pilot left. Your buddy caves - Fine, he'll fly them, just spare your lives - and as you begin to protest... Bang. You wake up on the beach. You know nothing about helicopters. All you have is the clothes on your back and a flashlight... Thanks for reading, and I hope you appreciate why I felt I needed to start a new thread for this. I look forward to your comments and criticisms and again I'd like to say; I'm 100% against all of this, but if it's going to happen I'd like to see it happen something like this!

    What I'll typically do is rename the folder from dayz to dayz_old. It'll build new config files on next start.

    The only problem with this is that people will suicide repeatedly to get the "class" they want. Whatever system the devs go with in the end, it must be created with the knowledge that players will *always* try to game the system and discover the min/max builds available.

    Standard dayz troubleshooting step not mentioned: Make a backup of and delete your config files. The default location is C:\Users\yourusername\Documents\DayZ. These files are not touched when you reinstall the game.
  15. Just wanted to say that I really enjoyed the format and hope it can make a reappearance the next time everyone in the office is waiting on a deployment. I'd personally love to see this kind of thing pop up from time to time when you're testing internally, too... It was especially enjoyable to hear Peter and Eugen discuss the CLE, even if we didn't get to the crux of my question: What factors does the CLE take into account when deciding *where* to spawn a given item? I'm sure I'm not the only player who is making assumptions and gameplay decisions with the system in the back of their minds, and it'd be wonderful to have some empirical data to make such decisions on.

    I see this concern all the time and I simply don't understand it: If a person would say "fuck this game, I'm never playing it again because it's shit and despite being in active development can never get better!" then they are being irrational, unreasonable and just as naive as someone who considers the dev team to be saints that can do no wrong. People are so melodramatic! They'll soon be back, and in greater numbers.

    I think it would make sense to have *three* types of hive: Official - Unavailable to rent, controlled dayz experience Community - The existing public hive Private - The existing private hives Assuming modding is still on the cards, now might also be the time to also further subdivide servers into modded and unmodded categories, perhaps encouraging people to rent unmodifiable servers to maintain the vanilla experience's online presence, whatever that may be when complete?

    I'm sure this is already well known as it's been around for a long time in one way or another, but the frame loss whilst driving seems to be related to the wheels: To demonstrate, watch your FPS counter whilst driving. Focus your camera towards the wheels and then cut them out of shot and you'll see what I mean.

    I get infrequent memory errors on 32 bit, frequent on 64 bit. 10GiB physical memory Windows controlled pagefile; currently ~2GiB Peak commit at time of crash is less than the total and no page faults are logged.
  24. Good evening Paul. We've met several times, but you probably wouldn't know that as I try not to gush at "celebrities", nor let people get near enough to discover my name. Something to keep in mind here: Youtube video creators and twitch streamers don't gain their popularity from their skill (at least in my not so humble opinion; why should I lie about being arrogant?), but rather from their dedication to contributing and their personalities. By heeding your moral compass you don't risk your viewership, but rather you strengthen it. In my opinion, the day you cross that line is the day you decide to stop making streaming, entertaining and educating a part of your life, let alone your day job. Regarding exploitation of the well glitch versus the apple glitch: Whilst it's not perfect, I actually feel that given that water pumps in DayZ are of the piston variety, the act of spamming your interact key actually closely mimics reality; to attain a steady stream of water, one most work the pump handle with vigor! I rather hope that the new player controller will take this into account in the way it allows us to interact with this object. The apple glitch on the other hand is equivalent of shaking the tree to make it rain apples; whilst this might work at the height of the season, it's utterly unreasonable in January!
