I'm confused: What would DayZ add to any potential real world conflict resolution that can't already be done using more traditional means? Surely taking such serious issues into a fantasy space would in fact devalue any discussion, much in the way Holyrood was used to devalue and distract from Scottish input into Westminster, something the SNP fell for hook, line and sinker? Further, I think taking conflict resolution out of private hives and into a safe space would detract from the emotional power these private communities can hold over their players. Finally, I don't think it's possible to create a server that connects to more than one hive at a time. It shoul be possible to export data from the database of one hive and into a new one, though.

I usually play on Oldschool DayZ - 1PP camera only, private hive and with a ping of less than 70ms at peak times for me in the UK.

I think you mean crotchety, synonymous with irritable. :) -
Since 0.61 I've seen an increase in posts over on Reddit talking about and linking unofficially hosted servers and it's starting to give me some concern. Player numbers haven't hit the peaks they did for previous new builds and I wonder if these unofficial servers are exacerbating that problem, taking players out of the official pool as they (presumably? I've not and won't test myself) use non battleye/steam clients to connect to these servers and thus don't count towards the player totals. There's a saying about "closing the stable door after the horse has bolted" that perhaps applies here? With the latest server files already out in the wild illicitly and leaked server hosts able to offer more functionality and control than officially hosted servers, is it perhaps time to open the discussion about when server files will be made available to those who operate within the rules? Thank you in advance for your participation! Moderators: I understand this discussion is skating on thin ice. If I've overstepped the bounds I'd appreciate if you'd advise how I can continue this discussion without actually breaching the rules or exacerbating the problem myself!

I haven't checked out any of the servers myself and so I couldn't say where they're hosted, just that they're not visible via the in-game browser. A country with relatively relaxed copyright laws like Russia seems a fair bet. What worries me isn't the financial element, it's that these illicit servers are able to modify their config files and offer varied DayZ experiences; for example spawning characters in to different places with different starting equipment, can alter the spawn rates of infected and animals and... well, change anything they like about it that's currently implemented. Legitimate server owners are actually at a disadvantage compared to the illegitimate ones when it comes to providing the experience their playerbase wants - whether that's a deathmatch or extreme survival experience.

This is a really interesting idea - we agree to terms and conditions when we install any software and, arguments of their legality aside, is it really a big stretch to have these terms and conditions include a non disclosure agreement? It certainly seems fitting in an early access environment! -
When a group sees a helicopter flying overhead, greed will take over - they'll want that helicopter. Wouldn't it be cool if they managed to track it down, murder it's existing crew and secure it for themselves... but be unable to fly it, instead having to stand guard whilst a pilot is located, perhaps even for days as one of their team finds the books and learns the rudimentary skills? Wouldn't it be cool if their initial assault took the fact that none of them could fly the damn thing and that they might need to also secure the pilot to be able to secure the helicopter?

A child riding in the back seat of a car asking "are we nearly there yet?" is really complaining about the length of the journey, because they're not in control and unable to fully comprehend the situation. It doesn't render their complaint invalid, but it's certainly misplaced. -

This isn't true: If you read the bad reviews you'll see that the vast majority of them do blame this indie studio for their alleged poor development practices (despite having no knowledge of development practice themselves). I've criticised the DayZ team for their communication and the speed at which updates are released into the wild in the past (particularly 2015!) as I felt it wasn't fitting with a game in early access, but that's not a criticism I can level anymore as the guys and gals are doing a good job of communicating these days and there are reasonably frequent updates to the experimental branch at least. Anyway... The game is in alpha and the reviews won't get worse, they'll just get more numerous. Those writing the reviews are often the ones at fault too, as the reason for their review is frequently disingenuous. I'm not absolving the team of all blame but I really don't think at this point in time they need us armchair developers pointing out where they've gone wrong. -

This is true. This is not true. -
Start running towards freedom and whilst holding down your run button, pull out your network cable. When you reconnect you should be free. Killing the process whilst running at the wall will do the same thing.

The title pretty much says it all - do you think we should be able to skin zombies? Bones are now a valuable asset, and whilst a zombie wouldn't return any (edible) meat or (usable) leather, their bones would still be perfectly serviceable for making arrows.

It's been a while since I've revisited this topic, so I thought I'd bring it back to the front page to see if there are any more comments that people who perhaps didn't see this a few years ago might care to chime in on? Thanks in advance, and apologies for the blatant bump/necro.

I dont understand why there is no AUTO RUN KEY!!!
mithrawndo replied to Bohannan (DayZ)'s topic in Suggestions
There is fundamentally no difference between using macro software and using a programmable keyboard; the latter's use can neither be detected nor prevented. Furthermore, to my knowledge there are as yet no terms of service in place and so it would be outrageous to get your license revoked for having a tool like autohotkey running whilst dayz/battleye were active without being expressly forbidden to do so by an authorotitive representative of Bohemia Interactive. To wit, go ahead and run your autorun macro until you hear otherwise or, more likely, they finally get around to giving us this missing control mechanism. -
Sure, if it floats your boat I don't see why not: It wouldn't need too much code, just more modelling - which is a field Bohemia seem to have a labour excess in. Please excuse my ignorance but, why do these things even exist in the real world? We've had elastic for over 150 years now...
-
Wait... Is this for real? Did someone, somewhere, really think it a good idea to combine a gun and an axe into one? I want some of what they were smoking!

I hate you, now I have to go and play C&C. There is currently no real simulation going on for vehicles. Admittely we're not playing Spintires in a zombie apocalypse, but I'd like to see a few little touches added: The ability to add a breather onto the air intake to allow the truck to still run whilst the engine is submerged, for example. Right now, they are invulnerable. That's fine: Alpha. I'm hoping a little more time is spent to make the simulation of the vehicles a little more in line with what Bohemia Interactive have become famous for.

You're not looking at the big picture; what we need is a general system to attach items to our clothing/backpacks that can include chemlights and gas lamps - similar to attaching a fishing hook to a boonie hat. Sadly I suspect that both the OPs request and my own are not likely to ever happen due to the amount of code required for what would be a largely superfluous feature. Awesome, but superfluous.

Thanks for the link, some interesting discussion there. In particular, I think the man on Hicks' right (Jeff Strain I believe?) makes a very interesting point about game design: I think by erasing minds of what they learn with bullets, but allowing the storing of information in books - both player written notes on a subject (if possible, that's a tall order) and hard coded skill books that suffer wear and tear as they are used, we provide an excellent mechanism to encourage cooperation and to heighten the experience that combat gives us without overly punishing the intelligent, well organised player.

A (Former) Good Guy at the End of his Patience's Rant
mithrawndo replied to TSGN7's topic in General Discussion
Without players who killed on sight, there would be no terror when you run head first into another player. Remember that our deaths to the unenlightened make them happy in the moment. Think of giving your life as giving a gift to the great unwashed masses of Chernarus. They're getting their kicks on blasting pixels, I say let them. I'll keep trying to get my kicks out of the people I meet, no matter how many times my brains end up on the pavement. -
Open inventoryRight click can of soda/beansCancel current actionYou're welcome :) Edit: Hopefully they'll add the cancel action onto middle mouse for using objects in the game world though, as it is a missing feature. For now, this works around it.

1st Person Private Slave hooked up to 3rd Person Master
mithrawndo replied to UKA Harrysoon's topic in Servers
Yes, it's entirely possible. Characters are shared between the master and slave regardless. -
Indeed you start a new life - a new character - each time you die. It's to preserve immersion that the suggestion includes forgetting any previously learned skills with each bullet to the brain. No clones, no preserving what you've learned in past lives. You wake up on the beach and all you've got are the clothes on your back. In short, I'm not really sure what you're trying to say: Do you think it's a good thing that the suggestion includes forgetting everything you've learned when you die, or do you prefer the idea of a safety net?
-
The only limit on how many skills you can learn would be how many books you can find and read. Books should wear out like any other item in DayZ, and so whilst you could (and would) find books to place in your stash, after being used for several days they'd fall to bits. Given that you can also tear pages out of books, there's the potential for a book to even be incomplete. This would work quite will as a control mechanism between character lives and for groups. I don't like the idea of attributes affecting how quickly your skills train (though I'm not averse to being persuaded), and similarly I don't like skill "trees" where one skill is a prerequisite of the other. It makes sense that you would require to learn several skills to use an item, but I can't imagine what benefit - in a game where your lifespan is deliberately short - there would be to having requirements to learn something. Having a vehicle require someone to have learned to drive and someone else to have learned to fix it - an invisible mechanism to encourage without forcing cooperation - seems desirable to me.
-
The way it works in Eve is that you must have a skill in training to receive any skill points at all. If you don't, that's time wasted. No refunds: Be better organised next time! I'd like to see this implemented in the same way here. You only learn if you have the appropriate book in your bag and activate the training. It trains passively for as long as your character is alive. For example: You find a book on hydraulics & put it into your inventoryYou find another book on chemistry & place it in your inventoryYou start "reading" the hydraulics bookYou log off... and don't play again for a week. When you return, you'll have finished reading the hydraulics book - aka trained the skill - but it won't automatically start reading the book on chemistry, nor will it "save up" the skill points for you to apply elsewhere. They're lost; you should have checked on your progress. One bullet in the head, and all you've ever read is lost.
