What should I keep? the AKM or M4?

Yea, I don't feel right without a pistol and the sawed-off has bailed me out of nothing less than three KOS situations (it's just "point & kill"). Like I said, the Longhorn is a passing fancy and one of the assault rifles will probably go to a friend in need :D I don't see it as excessive, I prefer to interact with people, but with so many punk kids and bandits playing this game it's better to be prepared. I make a point to eat everything i can, so not carrying a load of food frees up some gear space. This made me LOL.. nice

No, it's magpul, painted green. No question, I've had the gun for a while now. Might just be something about the image.
  3. I wanted to open a discussion, and hopefully enlist the opinions and knowledge of people familiar with the architecture of the game. I'm not a programmer, and I'm not going to pretend to be. I have nothing but respect for people that do, and I'm anxious to hear some different perspectives. But please be kind, I'm acknowledging my lack of experience to avoid cheap shots for something I just don't know enough about. What I DON'T want this to turn into is a flame-debate about one person's opinion over another, or anything regarding the virtues of one style of play over another. Loot will obviously be a game changer, but I'm not interested in whether or not persistent loot will have an impact on banditry, or KoSing, or whatever.. let's be objective fellas. My biggest question is how this will operate with a public hive, specifically in regards to stated plans for a central loot system. My understanding of persistent objects in a virtual world are that the items are saved specific to that server you're using. So if you're playing Minecraft, for example, you build a house in a server that won't follow you to another server. This includes any items you carry on your character. Pretty obvious concept. However, with DayZ's current form, we move from server to server and your character is the same.. same equipment, same everything. This is really my question.. once persistent loot is introduced, will it spawn into a server that we join just as the equipment on our back? Furthermore, if I set up a tent in the Black Forest in Server A, and despawn in Berezino, then join Server B, will my tent appear in Server B at the same place in the Black Forest?

Part of the reason I'm delegating my decision to the community is because I'm a defensive player. I've managed to stay alive by keeping a pretty low profile, but I've found myself in plenty of situations where I had to fight. I don't start fights, but I will finish them. Since I'm not out there trying to pick a fight, I may not have many opportunities to do a live field test of both. I'd like to know that I have the best tool for the job when my mic doesn't work. This is the most compelling piece to the puzzle. Its true, those little green boxes of 7.62x39 are seemingly anywhere and everywhere.

Lets post some screen shots (Standalone)

In that last one there was some jackass outside, flagrantly shooting Zeds with his magnum; zeds that I had carefully avoided. Needless to say, I expected an encounter.

    [NEW] Downed Helo Locations

I located a chopper today at the NWAF. In a large clearing just behind the upper-2 hangars, inside the wall.
  7. Irish, great post and I wholeheartedly agree. The unfortunate truth is that the subset of this community who will actually read your post are also more likely to possess patience, and likely have a vested interest in a sustainable/un-rushed final product. In short: You're preaching to the choir. It's the ADHD crowd with their short attention spans whose eyes glaze over with such a thought-through synopsis (more than few sentences without Youtube clips or colorful screengrabs and you've lost them). They need constant stimulation by way of content, and constant reassurance from a figure of authority rather than thinking for themselves and drawing logical conclusions. It's these folks that aren't being reached, and to some extent I don't think it matters. The Devs have grown quiet of late, probably because they realized the cycle of "damned if you do, damned if you don't", whereby updates on progress are met with disappointment and armchair quarterbacks, just as they'd get if no updates were given at all! Why bother with incremental updates if the noisiest, most ignorant members are going to jump down your throat? I love the conspiracy theorists that have emerged; claiming that BIS arranged this whole thing to make a quick buck. I have a conspiracy theory for everyone- What if Rocket & Co. purposely fell silent and focused on wide-ranging all-encompassing updates that were fewer and farther between just to weed-out and turn away all the whiny, uncommitted players?
  8. Let me tell you a tale of a police station full of pistols, where all the magazines were 5 miles away at an airbase... I won't actually tell you a tale, but I will put this little absurdity into perspective. I understand that there are plenty of scenarios where a pistol might be found without its magazine. Perhaps in a home, where the owner had kids, or maybe a gun shop or ... actually, I'm having trouble coming up with examples. The fact of the matter is that any guns that we find, strictly from a game-plot perspective would have been dropped or left by people in the throes of a zombie apocalypse. Hopefully we can all accept that. Furthermore, most of the places we find pistols are where one might expect: emergency service facilities, police stations, military bases, etc.. all places where the people who once used them would have no reason to carry them unloaded, or at least not stripped of their mag. I propose that pistols should predominantly spawn with a magazine attached. If you really think about it, finding a pistol without a magazine isn't much different from finding one without a slide rail. The degree to which that magazine is loaded is irrelevant. Even if found empty, it would be a huge improvement over traipsing around the map looking for a magazine that had no business not being attached to the gun in the first place. From a balancing perspective, I believe the pistols are sufficiently nerfed for PVP that pistols found with mags attached wouldn't dramatically change gameplay; perhaps allowing pistols to take their rightful place as the commonly seen weapon among new spawns and veteran characters alike. In the presence of supersonic zombies, new spawns should have a higher likelihood of securing a ready-to-use pistol from an early stage, also allowing them an earlier opportunity to defend themselves from bandits and KoSers alike. 11. On your first point.. I wonder if the plans for a 64-bit platform will allow this to happen. I'm especially curious about comments that Dean has made, specifically at E3 when discussing his longterm roadmap he identified a scenario where players would "have to go to another server to find a specific part they need to complete their helicopter" These sort of comments are at odds with a server-side persistent loot system. On your second point, and as a segue, I hadn't considered vehicles until just now. Perhaps the components of vehicles could be carried from one server to another, but the vehcile itself would remain in one server. Using your example, things would get pretty ridiculous if whilst driving another player's car where said player logs out, and you're left driving a cushion of air..
  12. Still leaves me with the main question though, which is the connection between the game's current state, Dean's roadmap and the recent push for globally controlled (centralized) loot. ^This is what I'd prefer I'm not sure, but we might be on the same page. Looking at it from the perspective of server performance, if your persistent loot only stayed in the server you placed it on, then remained behind after you left (like it does with Minecraft), a clusterfuck would ensue. However, if your tent/persistent gear despawned with you, like an extension of your character, it would alleviate this. This is how I'd like to see it go, this way I can go between the 3-4 servers that I frequent the most, and not have to worry about 4 separate tents, each unique to the server I'm in.
  13. Does general attrition and asshattery 'holistically' keep the number of tents in a server from getting out of control? As in, is it ever an issue where there's hundreds of tents in a given server?
  14. I can't seem to find a straight answer about what this means, and I feel like I've seen it in more than one server. Anyone have a clue?
  15. Looks like the general consensus is feeling largely 'underwhelmed' by 0.44 and 0.45 ..is this pretty accurate? Perhaps it is by design, and the devs intend to knock our socks off with 0.46, or at least I hope so. I also hope they aren't sandbagging the AKM like its going to miraculously appease a frustrated community; starving not for content but better playability and game mechanics. I've been one of the cooler heads in these forums when it comes to patience and gratitude, but I've honestly been totally disinterested in playing recently... mostly due to people's feedback.

Centralized loot -meaning Hive-controlled? I'm not very familiar with the different types.

    Another new pistol...

I'm amazed that the P1 and the Encore have made it into the game before the bloody Glock 17 or a pump-action shotgun! As far as the scope, the large eyepiece lens over a smaller objective lens is perfectly common on pistol scopes and has to do with the shooters viewing angle/distance relative to holding a pistol at arms-length. The REAL question is.. will we be able to use this scope on the Magnum?.... I certainly hope so.

Don't forget there is a 'subtle' plot line/back story that explains NATO forces were in the area of Chenarus to monitor a civil uprising (just prior to the outbreak). This gives validity to things like US-badged tactical shirts, M4's and 1911's.
