    DayZ Item Use Compendium

So one thing I'm loving about this game so far is how many items there are already, and how much potential depth this could offer in the future. The goal of this thread is to compile a list of items and their uses (or intended uses which may not be implemented). I will update this with correct names of everything, just kind of want to get something like this started and see what everyone has discovered so far. I will update the format as well to make it more visually appealing and whatnot. tl;dr: tell me stuff and I will add it to this list, and credit you. Contributions: FroztyReaper; tommy86; thejokerr; Ynneead; BigMike; Peanuted; Thoric; Golgo82 Edit: Constantly adding stuff in. Thanks for all the contributions everyone. Also going to be messing around with a color coding scheme to make this handier. -------------------------------------------------------------- Food & Drink [basic Survival] Canned Food: Recover Hunger and Thirst slightly. Multiple Use. Can be opened with Can Opener (best), Hatchet, Screwdriver, Kitchen Knife, and Bayonet. Hatchet /Screwdriver /Kitchen Knife / Bayonet causes loss of food. Can of Baked Beans - requires tool to open. 1 slot. Can of Spaghetti - requires tool to open. 1 slot. Canned Tuna - no tool required to open. 1 slot. Canned Sardines - requires tool to open. 1 slot. Dry Food: Recover Hunger. Seemingly made better by combining with wet ingredients and/or cooking but I have not been able to make this work. Maybe it's not implemented or I'm doing it wrong. Dried Milk - "Mix with Water". Can consume dry. 1 inventory slot. 10 uses. (have tried to mix with Water and this and doesn't seem to be implemented). Rice - Can consume dry. 2 inventory slots. 10 uses (I'd imagine you will be able to cook this eventually) Cereal - Can consume dry. 4 inventory slots. (really hope you will be able to mix with water and dry milk!) Fruit: Recover Hunger (potentially thirst?). Single use. May cause food poisoning if rotten, but still safe if the fruit is damaged. Just make sure it says "fresh". If you are dying of starvation, you can eat some rotten food and risk getting sick. Banana - 1 inventory slot. 1 use Orange - 1 inventory slot. 1 use Kiwi - 1 inventory slot. 1 use Apple - 1 inventory slot. 1 use Soda: Recover Thirst and Hunger slightly. "Not healthy" (can anyone confirm the repercussions of this?). Zluta Klasik - Lemon Flavored. 1 use. Zluta Kolaloka - 1 use Zluta Malinovka - Strawberry Flavored. 1 use. Water: Recover Thirst. Can be contaminated if you drink pond/stream/lake water. Safe from Wells found in most towns. Purify potentially contaminated water using Water Purification Tablets. Canteen - stores water. 2 inventory slots. 5 uses. Water Bottle - stores water. 2 inventory slots. 3 uses. Utility Items [Advanced Survival; Situational] General Utility: Basic Items Can Opener - Open Cans without losing food. Very useful. 1 slot Disinfectant - Disinfect anything. Useful on rags. Poisonous if consumed. Can force feed to other players to make them sick. Take charcoal tablets to alleviate effects. 2 slots. Handcuffs - Handcuff other players. 1 slot. Handcuff Keys - Unlock Handcuffs. 1 slot Power Supplies: Anything used to make something else work 9V Battery - Starting Item. Lick to test charge. Attach to Flashlight, Head Torch, Weapon Flashlight. 1 slot. Small Gas Canister - Attach to Portable Gas Lamp, Portable Gas Stove. 1 slot Large Gas Canister - Attach to Portable Gas Lamp, Portable Gas Stove. (Slot #? Is there a medium canister currently? I had one with two slots but can't remember) Gear for Night Time: All the stuff that will help you survive at night Flashlight - Everyone starts with one. Attach a 9V Battery, equip to your hands, and press SPACE to raise it (like a weapon). Weapon Flashlight - Flashlight that attaches to a weapon. Attach a 9V Battery. Requires Handguard RIS to attach to M4. Head Torch - A flashlight for your head. Replaces "Head" Clothing. Attach a 9V Battery. Portable Gas Lamp - Attach Gas Canister and light. Use indoors to light up a building (confirm?), but not useful outdoors. Navigation: Figure out where you are and where you are going Compass - Find cardinal directions. To use, equip to a hotkey. Press hotkey, press SPACE to raise. Look down and see direction. MUST be in 1st person. Map Fragment - Piece of Chernarus Map. Below are tentative map combinations, require further testing and confirmation) Chernarus NW + Chernarus NE = Chernarus N Map Chernarus NE + Chernarus SE = Chernarus E Map Chernarus SE + Chernarus SW = Chernarus S Map Chernarus NW + Chernarus SW = Chernarus W Map Chernarus N + Chernarus E + Chernarus W + Chernarus S = Chernarus Map Cooking: Everything for cooking a meal (not sure if this feature is implemented yet) Firewood Stone Wood Stick (maybe here or only for Medical - see Splint) Matchbook - (Have not been able to light a fire with matches and firewood yet? Anything else required?) Cooking Pot - (Place ingredients inside to cook? Anyone try this?) Portable Gas Stove - Attach Gas Canister, set down and cook stuff. (Haven't tried this yet) Medical: Keep yourself healthy. ***CREDIT TO LouisK for a great thread on the health system.*** LINK: http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/157188-health-system-what-i-could-figure-out/ Antibiotics - These cover most of bacterial infections and are of moderate effect. DayZ Item Use Compendium

Yes, I found some myself and have been taking them periodically though I wasn't sure of the exact results. Thanks. Forgot the Duct Tape. Didn't know that about the running shoes. Will have to try it out. I found the wiki after making the post, I didn't realize that they would update the old DayZ wiki for standalone. Definitely a good resource. I want this thread to be a bit more about explicit with information on every item and how to use them, for new players and players like myself who want to learn more about the game, despite being able to survive perfectly fine. Do they only work in buildings? I've tried setting them outside in the dark and they only make it darker if anything. Can you be more specific? Do you think something like this wouldn't be useful, do you feel like the information is all covered by the wiki, or does it not apply to you personally? Thanks for all the input everyone. I will get around to a big update with all the info you guys posted later in the day.

Yes, but they take up slots. I want to have slots they provide vs slots they take up (if you decide to put them in your bag instead of putting them on.

    A Few Questions

To kill zombies without losing any blood, pretend that you're a rogue in an MMO and circle around them 1000 times spamming auto attack. ... ... Actually it works. They won't hit you unless you are facing them. If you keep circling around their backside they won't hit you.

Will there be a reason to stay on one server?

If people DIDN'T server hop there would be plenty of guns and ammo to go around on each server, you might just have to get creative where you look for it, and you might not find anything when you get to your destination. I've already found a few more places where military loot spawns that did not exist in the mod, and I can't imagine one server needing more than that once loot respawns, and even the way it currently is. I play on a populated server (30-40 people) and have found certain military loot untouched, and some where people have been but couldn't take all the guns.

Will there be a reason to stay on one server?

I imagine once they implement any kind of base building ... even a basic tent, that will be reason enough to stay on one server. Of course, there will still have to be separate steps taken to prevent server hoppers from easy-looting one place over and over then hoarding it on their home server.

Added clothing. Will have to do some testing on this to confirm.

Awesome tidbit. I had no idea you could combine the fragments (hence the point of this thread). Now I wish I kept the ones I came across. :p

Question to every Bear Grylls in Chernarus

It's unclear if servers are even on a normal day/night cycle at this point. It may vary depending on your server and how often there are server resets. The best thing you can do is try and find a Compass. With that you can always orient yourself. When you spawn on the coast, if you are near Elektro you can hit that up and then head to Berezino and eventually Northeast Airfield. If you are in Cherno, you can go north to Stary and eventually Norteast or Northwest Airfield. If you are in Kamenka / anywhere west of Cherno, head north for Green Mountain, Zelengorsk, and Northwest Airfield.

    playing alone

Playing alone is doable. It's a bit more tense as you are always looking over your shoulder, and need to be a bit more careful without a numbers advantage. If your thing is surviving as long as possible, avoid big cities and hit up small towns. Avoid towns with doors already open, and stay inside the treeline / off main roads when traveling. If you're more interested in getting geared up as quickly as possible, rush cherno/elektro when you spawn straight into Zelengorsk + Green Mountain military loot. You may die, but the whole ordeal will take an hour to two hours tops depending where you start - high risk, high reward.

    Introducing ChristmasLunch

Welcome, As I'm sure you are aware, it's in alpha stage so there will be a lot of bugs, but hopefully you and your friends can still enjoy the game. I'm not sure what you mean by "lost inventories", but if you drop an item on the ground sometimes it takes a while for it to actually appear on the ground. I noticed this when playing with a friend and trying to trade stuff. Sometimes things drop instantly, sometimes they take up to 30 seconds to appear in the vicinity. Read the stickied threads to get some useful info.

Thanks, I wanted to try exactly that but never had all the components at one time. . Anyone else try the portable gas lamp at night only to be disappointed by the big white ball in front of them that casts no light? :D

Thanks for the contributions, Will add this in the Clothing section. Can anyone confirm if there is only one brand of cereal. I guess I didn't pay attention to the one box I ate while prone under a table because my inventory was full. ^^

Thanks for the info. Yes the lure of eating rotten fruit when you are starving .... it's always made my character sick. Maybe next time I die I'll try and do some extensive testing. and see how often it makes you sick / not.

"dude calm down it's just an Alpha"

It's more about tone and how the OP gets his/her point across. If the purpose of the thread is to report bugs, rather than whine about them, it's fine. If someone posts demanding that something be changed because it's "breaking the game", well they DO need to calm down. Report the bug or make your suggestion, but don't start demanding things in a tone that would suggest this is a final game and you want a refund.

Server hopping is killing this game FAST

I think the idea of coming to a town, and finding it stripped clean adds to the immersion. I might die because someone else got there first and took all the edible food. I then have to decide if it's worth checking every house, or if I have to move on. Eventually, you'll find enough to survive on, usually the person who got there first doesn't need everything or missed some things. Also when you see open doors you are more on your guard, knowing that the person could still be around. That's why I would want players to be restricted to one server, or at least have a time out penalty for switching. It creates more tension.

Health system: What I could figure out.

Thanks for the post, very informative! My friend just broke his leg. Can anyone confirm if the splint thing works or if morphine is currently required (or if it ever heals on its own)?

    Day of interesting bugs.

Disclaimer: This is not a complaint thread, I'm aware it's an alpha. So I had a fun day playing today but, for some reason it was more buggy than the past 2 days of playing. I'm not sure if it has to do with the new version. I fresh spawned because my character got wiped (my own stupidity for joining a different server), met up with a random person in Kamenka who turned out to be friendly, we journeyed a bit until he eventually disconnected or desynched or something, leading to interesting bug #1: #1) Mirages Did I mention I was nearly dying of thirst and hunger so this bug almost made sense, but after he disconnected, I found a town and saw his character up ahead, so I followed him to a house (trying to talk but hearing no response), went inside the house and it was empty with the back door not open. I leave through the back door and see his character at the door of the house up ahead, go inside, but this time when I get to the door, the front door wasn't open. Spooky. But that was the last I saw of that. Anyway, I make my way to a large city somewhere up north, now really dying of hunger and thirst, and pass out as the server resets. When I log back in, I'm conscious, bleeding and dying of hunger/thirst. Two guys approach me with axes and start axing me in the face but I somehow don't die ... #2) God Mode I actually wanted to die, but seeing I wasn't for whatever reason, I decide to axe them back and make them both bleed, then chase them up the road until they server hop (take that KoS). Eventually I head back to the city like wtf. They server hop back and start calling me a hacker and asking how I'm hacking. I respond that I'm bugged. Either that or we were all heavily desynched. They leave the server again, and I decide to test this out while I'm still bleeding, get hit a bunch of times by a zombie and don't die. Eventually I bandage myself , eat and drink, loot the entire city eating all the food but somehow my screen is still black and white so maybe I'm just bugged at 0 health or something. Eventually I find more loot run around a bit, find a handgun and an M4, and fireman axe (yay), start heading north and get chased by a zombie, leading to #3) God Mode Zombie I shoot her (a lot). I axe her. She doesn't die. She then takes a swipe at me and 1 shots me. GG Maybe I was dead the whole time. Anyone else experience some outlandish bugs?

    Day of interesting bugs.

Oh I forgot to mention, I was also only able to walk (though for some reason could still sprint), but after eating a bunch I could run again, that's why I figured I was healing but my screen was still black and white. I'll keep the Saline in mind for the future. As for the rest, it probably was just heavy desynch, but I'm glad I died to a zombie rather than the 3 server hoppers trying to kill me with axes :D

    DayZ Mythbusters

I think it would be an interesting series as the game develops. I feel like every "myth" at this point is probably some kind of bug, but hopefully as the game gets more stable, and more content is added, this could take off. Good luck.
