    Riot shields and improv shields

I would like to discuss a suggestion that I have been pondering a while now. Some may see it as cheap, but I think with the correct level or rarity, and a fair amount of restrictive properties, I think a riot shield would be a fantastic idea. Imagine getting yourself pinned down on an airfield, or in a building, and using the shield to protect yourself. movement would be greatly reduced, and the shield would take the slot of your backpack. You would need to crouch walk to keep your whole body behind it, although your feet would not be fully protected. You would not be able to shoot from behind the shield with anything other than a small caliber pistol like the FNX. Rough proof of concept: These could be found in police station, as that would be a realistically accurate place for this kind of gear. I welcome all input so please tell me what you think. (edited to remove anything anyone didn't like.)

The True Story, Of a True Hero.

Today, I had an experience that changed my impression of this game. It showed me that there are; however few it seems, good people in the world. And their goodness transcends in-game. This afternoon, after a shoot-out with a handful of coastal bandits, I found myself laying in a field, broken and bleeding, waiting for the grey vale of death to recess upon me. In my one last fleeting attempt to find a cloth to bandage myself, I crawled across a young man in a red coat. I yelled out to him, hoping, that maybe, he would feel compassion for me. Expecting the worst, I watched as he approached me, and to my astonishment he began to bandage me. When the profuse bleeding had stopped, he not only bequeath me with the few rations of food and supplies he had stuffed into his pockets, but he offered me his coat for warmth. He vowed to head north in search of a splint or morphine, to help me walk again. I was shocked; how is this possible? Why would someone help me? Slithering around, bleeding, wearing nothing but my undergarments, exposing myself to certain death? Dumbfounded, I started to crawl towards my scattered gear, hoping to protect it while I wait for the stranger to get back. I turn and see him run towards me. He finds the pile of gear, including my fully loaded M4. I watch him put on my backpack, and pick up the gun. I lay in waiting, expecting him to raise the barrel, and end my life. Shockingly, with my life in his hands, he takes off the backpack, and instructs me to put it on, and that he will find his own. He asks respectively, if he can borrow my weapon to protect himself on his quest to find me medicine. I agree and he prepares to venture forth. At that moment, I decided that I did not want to be a burden to this man. I asked him to please, take my gear and end my suffering gracefully. He once again, gives me his word that he will stay in that very spot, and await my return. He takes the shot, and my screen goes black. I find myself back on the coast near Berezino. I start my timely trek south to the factory. I arrive 10 minutes later, expecting nothing but my old shell of a body, laying lifeless in the grass. But to my disbelief, I find him once again, standing there, awaiting my return. He offers me the gear, and asks to keep nothing. I say to him "Never have I seen anyone go to such length to help a complete stranger. You could have left, you could have killed me, and you would remain unpunished, and unaffected by your actions. Instead you offered what little you had and were willing to risk your life to save mine. The gear belongs to you now, safe travels." and just like that I took off, never to see him again. Your character is not measured by your in-game skin, or the clothing on your back. It is measured by the actions you take, when the moral compass is in your hand. The true story, of a true hero.

That's one way to spend $2300 I guess. The Makerbot is not bad but hell, that's a lot of cash to drop.

In desperate need of some help :(

That's pretty much it, if you continue to bluescreen, likely your CPU or GPU may be damaged. There is no telling if the previous owner had tried overclocking said components and perhaps set the voltage too high, causing irreparable damage. Hard to when buying used. Good luck, I hope it all works out.
  9. The FPS Dilemma So, I have been seeing a ton of posts every week about how to really maximize the amount of juice you can squeeze out of your rig to get this game running with acceptable frame rate. Unfortunately a lot of these include downloading programs, changing windows properties, harassing your parents for a better CPU, or tinkering with the your ARMA2 video settings. Sure some of these solutions might work for some of you, but if your rig isn't at the current industry standard, then you will end up bogging down your CPU even more. I want to step up and give you the most simple and straight forward solution there is, and all it takes is tweaking your video settings the correct way. Before you start Before we do anything, Launch Arma, go to the video settings and click the default button. We want to start clean and fresh and work our way up to a nicely balanced setup. Make sure you close any background programs, tasks, virus scans, torrents, or anything else that may effect your systems performance. This isn't a required step but its always good to defragment your hard drive. Now, this isn't going to have any effect on your frame rate, but It will improve loading times, and overall performance. REMEMBER, never ever under any circumstances defragment a Solid State Drive (SSD). An SSD works completely different to a conventional hard disk and does not fragment files. Sometimes, It's good to just open up your PC's case (if it's a desktop) and vacuum the inside. you can do this by using the vacuum hose attachment. be careful not to rub the end of the hose against any of the internal components! You don't want to risk damaging something. Make sure you get the fans on the CPU, the case, and the power supply. If you press the end of the hose flat against a fan just right, the fan will begin to spin at high speed, blowing out the dust. Alternatively you can use compressed air. Ready to begin Arma will decide whether to use your CPU, or your GPU, depending on your settings. Not many people know this and end up dropping their settings down, and not taking advantage of the GPU. This game is not well optimized and can put a heavy load on your CPU, so your going to need something with at least 3ghz to run it at a comfortable FPS. If your CPU can't run at that speed, don't fret! it's not the end of the world. If you have a decent GPU then you may be able to put the load on that. These days GPUs are very affordable and a lot of models can be overclocked, making them perform in the range of their higher end counterparts. I will not be going into overclocking in this tutorial as it is a long and arduous process and it differs from card to card. Now if you have a newer CPU, i5 or i7, and a current generation GPU then these settings should have you running at a solid 60fps. Mind you, Chernarus is a pretty intensive map. I'm running Arma on a 240gb Kingston SSD, in a i7 3770k OC'd to 4.9ghz, with a GALAXY GeForce GTX 660ti 3gb GPU and I STILL get frame drop in the bigger cities. It's just something you gotta accept with a game that isn't fully optimized. But our goal today is to get you running at a reasonable FPS, Ideally we want you within the 25-30FPS range. After 30 frame per second the difference is quite subtle. Settings If you don't have a good GPU installed, but you think your CPU can take it, these are the settings I would recommend: Visibility: 1500 Texture Detail: Normal Video Memory: Normal Anisotropic Filtering: Normal (Used disabled if you are still having issues.) Antialiasing: Low (If you are still having issues disable it.) Terrain Detail: Low Object Detail: Normal Shadow Detail: Low HDR Quality: Low Postprocess Effects: Disabled (this is very important, this feature is useless.) * You can play with the visibility until you are happy and you can turn the object detail down if you are still having issues. This should get you to a solid 25-30fps using just the CPU. The most intensive settings that will effect your performance are Antialiasing, and shading. Bring these down as low as they can go if your not happy with your framerate. Now for those of you who have a good GPU, but a lower end CPU. Visibility: 2000 Texture Detail: High Video Memory: High Anisotropic Filtering: High (Either use high, or disable it to avoid using your processor.) Antialiasing: Low (If you are still having issues disable it all together.) Terrain Detail: High Object Detail: High Shadow Detail: High HDR Quality: Low Postprocess Effects: Disabled (this is very important, this feature is useless.) *These settings will put nearly the entire load onto your GPU and should keep things running in the optimal range. If you are still having issues the first things to address are your Visibility, Shadow Detail, and Antialiasing. Now for those of you who have a High end CPU, and a top of the line GPU. Visibility: 4000 Texture Detail: Very High Video Memory: Very High Anisotropic Filtering: High Antialiasing: Normal (If you are still having issues disable it all together.) Terrain Detail: Very High Object Detail: Very High Shadow Detail: High HDR Quality: Low Postprocess Effects: Disabled (this should always be disabled. disabling it will also effectively removes the stupid blurring when your low on blood.) *These are the settings I run my rig at and I get a solid 60fps the majority of the time. Final Notes One thing to keep in mind is that sometimes, FPS lag can even be caused by a server with poor performance. The data packets being requested by your Arma client can be slowed by the servers connection or even your own, and cause the client to slow its whole process to sync with the incoming data, giving you the feeling of choppiness or lag. When your changing the settings above, do it while you are in the single player editor, it acts as a great control for your tweaking. I hope this is helpful to some of you and if you have any questions please shoot me a reply, I am always happy to help!
  10. Removing fall damage would destroy the game. Its the best way to suicide at the moment.

    Riot shields and improv shields

According to wiki:"Some riot shields are designed to bebullet resistant against low velocity handgun and shotgun ammunition." I agree that most are not and they wouldn't stop a high velocity round at close range, but they do prevent the shooter from seeing your body, thus creating the possibility of them hitting a non vital organ. Also, they could be ballistic shields, which do stop some type of ammunition, and also protect against shrapnel from explosives.

I have never play COD so I wouldn't know, all i know is if this is my only tool to avoiding being sniped while I try to make it to the balota hangers, then I would much rather have it than not.

well, I would have gladly been playing in hardcore but my character has broken legs in the middle of NWAF. Besides, if its a 3rd person server, I'm not going to optionally choose to make the game harder for myself if everyone has the option of exploiting it as well. When in Rome, right?

    Severe weather causing visibility issues

Just got back from a work trip yesterday, and decided to see the new patch. Saw rain for the first time and it got me thinking, wouldnt it be cool to see rare weather so extreme that it would require players to seek shelter? Once in shelter, your player will regain his visibility, and begin to recover. Raincoats and goggles could help counteract the effects, but would become worn and would not protect your shoes and weapons from the elements. What do you guys think?

Water droplets would only occur in 3rd person. much like lens flare is present in 3rd person but not in first.

Why aren't there 'fat' characters in DayZ?

Should be a random chance that you spawn fat, and have a really hard time outrunning zeds. Maybe you have to find inhalers and insulin to survive.
