No, not really. There are two possible characters, one for Hardcore servers the other for Regular in the Stable build (+ 2 for Exp). It does happen that the server is not connecting to the central data base (Hive) which could result in your problem. Try different servers until you find one that connects.

That is because half of the servers are broken and everybody wants to log in. Performance is laggy even when you can join. We know it, they know it, I'm afraid you will just have to wait until tomorrow or later when they sort it out. Merged.

This is a pro Tip. Once servers have been added to the Favourite tab : do this. Start game, accept the Welcome Screen. Open the Steam Server client and check the favourites' tab. Click join on the server of your choice. No more waiting for host or other little problems, straight into game... Might help, might not. Steam Historic is being worked on.

lol, this is going to be an interesting week-end ! I'll jump in-game later and see what all the fuss and bother is about. The BE Direct Chat problem was in before this update by the way, known issue I believe.

What I think he's trying to say, although given the wall of text without the use of paragraphs, is that certain elements like having to hop to get a gun and getting killed by glitched Z's makes him "not want to play the game" ! As for the Topic title, I can only assume the server(s) are not connecting to the central Hive or are unable to fetch the character data, probably a connection issue, so I've moved this to Troubleshooting as it is obvious that he is having trouble.
