I have a Creative Labs X-Fi extreme gamer and a razer maelstrom headset (both no longer available). So I'm big on dedicated sound devices, the last time I was forced to use the onboard solution I lastest less than 24 hours, there is no comparison between dedicated and built in MB sound quality. If I was going to buy a new card today I would go for a Creative Sound Blaster Z High Performance Gaming Sound Card because I'm a creative fanboyz but I've heard an asus in action and the sound was excellent. I prefer 5.1 over 7.1 and internal + 5.1 speaker setup over my headset solution (unless using a laptop). As for your interference problem go to sound options/enregistrement/mic/levels and turn down to 20 or less (mine is set to 15) this should remove any crackling you and your friends can hear.
