Know your time zone + look for a server with your time zone - 6/4. When I started playing the only way for myself to play was to join a US server. Things have changed since.

Merged a few "How to Install" Topics. The Guides are in the STICKIES guys. 4 different Threads with 2 replys are worth nothing. One Topic will with many useful posts is worth its weight in BeanZ.

Vet ArmA player here. Firstly, you do not need Steam to launch ArmA, DayZ or any other combination of mods, unless you are dependant on your Steam friends to play the game. Here is the long time recommended method and guide to using different mods with OFP, ArmA and ArmAII. http://www.armaholic.com/plug.php?e=faq&q=18 For Steam users : http://www.armaholic.com/plug.php?e=faq&q=105 Commander, DayZ Install Tool are specific to DayZ. If you are more interested in keeping a clean ArmAII build I recommend using the above method. 6 Updater is a different beast and independent of the above Tools which comes into its own when joining different Servers with assorted modifications. I use AlpineStars ArmAII Launcher. Might help, might not.

Also, knife, axe and matches + runny babbit will keep you alive. When I start out on a looting mission I pack 3 cooked steaks, one in the inventory and two in my backpack, because them Infected keep on hitting me, without reason. And before you ask, Yes tents do work, it's a bit hit or miss but the basics work, now & again. Thanks.

OK, no Steam Group. Have you found a decent Server ? I could recommend a well admined Server (low pop at the moment) with its own TS if you want (not in public, so PM if you wish). I haven't submited my details to join the Group but I'm watching the progress. Thanks.

But there is a great difference between how the Infected see in the dark. I play on my own in the day time and with my team at night (nearly every night for the last 10 DayZ). It's a lot safer in town or raiding a Heli site at night. Same when using cover or getting close up to buildings.
