Advanced Weapon System (AWS) - Modular Firearms in DayZ
-Gews- replied to RoninGotPicks's topic in Suggestions
They won't let us change out all these parts because it would require redoing or altering existing models, creating new ones and a ton of extra work. It's already behind schedule ("goals") and I bet they want to avoid any more feature creep. Some things don't have a compelling reason to exist in-game, given the probability of finding them, the work involved in creating them and what they would provide to the game. For example, duckbill magazines for SKS or Archangel stock for Mosin. Some modifications might be easier modeled as a separate weapon variant—for example, finding SKS already with TAPCO stock and 20-round magazine versus finding the magazines and stock sitting somewhere separately. Ideally the parts could all interchange but the weapons and parts would be spawned as variants in most cases. Right now, I don't like how they use the attachment system excessively. One shouldn't have to go on a treasure hunt for parts that should logically spawn on the gun or nearby (eg, MP5K buttstock, MP5K compensator, certain weapons' magazines) and they should also avoid adding attachments just because they happen to exist (Mosin compensator). Some attachments should not spawn alone, or very rarely so (various rifle stocks and handguards, certain sights and optics, etc). They also shouldn't be afraid to spawn guns with standard attachments (in this day and age M4A1s will be issued with optics, ACOG or M68 etc should be the standard spawn, the great majority of Winchester Model 70s should spawn with a scope, etc). Some guns should not be able to accept the attachments they do (suppressor on 1911 or Makarov), some attachments should not be attachments (eg, folding stock and fixed stock FAL should be two different weapons). And of course attachments should not give any benefit or disadvantages that they do not objectively provide in real life (many examples). Also, the game should be set up so that most survivors don't mess too much with their weapons. If you screw it up it's not like they can send it in or go and buy another one. The modifications should be kept relatively simple and functional. -

Those rifles are all .22 caliber. They will of course have much less recoil than the 7.62x39 AKM. AK74M vs AKM: Recoil impulse = 4.8 vs 7.6 kg m/s Recoil velocity = 1.2 vs 1.9 m/s Recoil energy = 3.0 vs 7.2 J The in-game recoils for AK74/AK101 and AKM are the same pattern with different multipliers. Here's a chart of recoil angle vs time: And here is a comparison test (0.59):

WOW, Lucky I found that heatpack, said no one ever
-Gews- replied to siresteelhell's topic in General Discussion
Can provide some warmth while swimming to debug island, but only starting with patch 0.49. -
Say what? This is 0.59 and it hasn't changed since. The distance, ~20 m. What are you used to? Do you think this is a more appropriate recoil? (fyi, it's not) Distance in this case, ~26 m. There probably isn't much behind this because for the most part they haven't got around to fixing and tuning most weapon stats. They have more important things to do.

Anyone else felt/noticed that their content gets automatically deleted on reddit?
-Gews- replied to zombieland78's topic in General Discussion
Not me personally, but I have seen topics disappear. The most recent "disappeared" topic was this one: https://www.reddit.com/r/dayz/comments/56jh64/old_post_but_lets_make_the_ppsh41_happen/ Topic was hidden despite it spending a good while sitting near the top of the DayZ sub with 46 upvotes (85%). You can search for it and no results will appear. Why? Who knows. If you look at their rules... "Put all suggestions in the weekly "Community Workbench" threads." Yet they no longer do the "Community Workbench", and haven't for many months. How about... Memes and other wasteful content Who knows. -
You could take a crowbar and pry your way into most of the stuff they've shown in a matter of minutes, haha. Now, this concept would be very tough to dismantle... but ladders and ropes exist... in fact, if you have arms, you wouldn't even need them. So... I'm guessing access will be limited more so than in real life, either by design or by simple lack of the required mechanics (eg, climbing).
-
How? Read the comment again: "Ideally players would be able to carry multiple rifles" Why only two? I don't like the way the backpacks work either (instant access) but they still make more sense than the back slots.
-
I don't really like the slot system, but I think allowing "double carry" (triple carry?) would just make it worse. Yeah, it makes sense you could carry a rifle where you could carry an axe... but it doesn't make sense you can carry an axe there in the first place, and having every player running around with two long guns on his back would be pretty silly (unless they are in the process of transporting extra guns to their camp or base). Ideally players would be able to carry multiple rifles, but the drawbacks (weight, awkwardness, etc) would result in few people choosing to do so. As of now there are no such drawbacks.

Basebuilding Watchtowers preview added to Trello
-Gews- replied to ☣BioHaze☣'s topic in General Discussion
They could place sandbags there, but that flimsy tower would collapse under their weight. If we said 40 lbs per bag, 50 bags per wall, and 6 walls to cover = 12,000 lbs. -

I wouldn't build that tower myself. Nothing pictured is at all bullet resistant. It would be turned into Swiss cheese. -
Luckily, it's possible to set different limits for head and camera, to avoid "The Excorcist" moments.

1st person perspective only (Message to devs)
-Gews- replied to cs_wolf's topic in General Discussion
I agree in practice. In principle, I'd remove the 3rd person, but that's not realistic (remove the mode 95% of players prefer? *snorts*) Yet apply this laissez-faire attitude to other areas of the game, and what would you end up with? MAX LOOT / MAX VEHICLES / SPAWN WITH RIFLE / DEPLOYABLE BIKE / AS50 / THERMALS / CUSTOM LOADOUTS / AI TRADER / SAFE ZONES / CUSTOM BASES It's indisputable. Look at the mod. By late 2013 I could count the remaining vanilla servers on my fingers, while the custom Epoch/Overwatch/Overpoch servers numbered over 3,000, the rest were heavily customized 1.7.X or 1.8.X. Standalone's player base is no different. Is that a problem? Depends on who you talk to. My point is that many say "let people play how they want" when it comes to 1st vs 3rd person, yet a great number of those same people are against modding because it may lead to the proliferation of the MAX LOOT-type servers, drowning the vanilla game they would prefer, just as their preferred 3PP servers drown 1PP. (and don't even think about suggesting "MAX LOOT / SPAWN WITH RIFLE" be incorporated as an official server type/game mode) 1st vs 3rd is a valid discussion, but one that will not change anything. -
That one isn't very powerful. Thanks in part to the short barrel the 246 grain factory ammo is in the mid-600 fps range, many lighter hollow points don't get enough speed to expand very well, and they have a reputation for loosening up when subjected to hotter loads. Buffalo Bore put a warning on their site for this reason:

I was shooting infected when I saw someone run by... I decided to follow.
-
I did not take the meat in this instance. However I do, on occasion, partake of the bambi. I ate his liver with some Deez beans and a nice Kvass
-
Basically. I didn't eat her, those bones are for arrows. Shaky aim? No thanks (actually, the main reason I left the meat is that a female character will produce male cannibal laughs). Sharpened stick. I was out of arrows when I spotted her run by and had to make some on the way.
-
It does. Janky to use, in some ways overpowered, in other ways underpowered, either way unrealistic. But fun!
-
This patch, no idea. I have never actually used a tent (not counting picking them up and placing them down right there). Anyone else?
-
The model of scope isn't so important as the mount. A civilian mount makes the most sense. Like this: Then just pick any cheap hunting scope.
-
Instead of ringing, as a less irritating alternative which still reduces hearing some people have suggested a temporary lowering of in-game sound effects following close gunfire. Also: wear ear pro.

I don't usually speak over dead bodies, it's most immersion-breaking. However, I did leave a note on the road:

Do you expect folks to walk down and announce their intentions? One should always be aware of one's surroundings. That's how this game works. If I spot them first, they failed, and vice versa.

For me it is a PVP game, not survival. What is there to survive from, if not other players? Not hunger or thirst, just pick some apples and find a well. Not the infected, they are useless and easily dispatched with rocks, pointed sticks or even base hands, but only if you want to, since they can't catch you anyways. Not the weather, it's always been pretty mild and it is especially hard to freeze in this patch. Stairs, rocks, ladders and glitchy vehicles, I guess? There is the so-called "survival" which is not really about surviving, but about crafting all the homemade items like bows, fishing rods, stone fireplaces and leather clothing. All of this, of course, being completely unnecessary, and making it harder, not easier, to keep your character alive—although that's only due to the inefficacy of the crafted weapons against other players and the time spent sitting next to bright campfires. Which is fine, it can be a fun challenge or a peaceful activity, but it's not "survival". Anyways: my favorite PVP is when I come across people unexpectedly in remote areas. Unfortunately it doesn't happen that often. I prefer clean kills, which means ranged weapons and getting the drop without them noticing until it's too late. Melee is too hectic and not very satisfying. Why this game? Because the long gearing up process creates more excitement and fear of death on both sides.

It was night and I was shooting zombies from the large chimney in Berezino. I had spent an hour or more in the area and had seen no one. As I was climbing down I saw a figure run past, heading west near the fire station. Nice time to be out of arrows! I ran in the opposite direction past the police station, cut a few bushes and made some sharpened sticks. Then I headed west as well, hoping to catch another glimpse of the person. I was now a couple minutes behind him, but as I sprinted down the road I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of him maybe 150 metres off. He was moving up towards the hospital. I caught up with him at a couple points as he looted cars and dealt with zombies, but had no opportunity for a shot. Somehow he did not see me. I spent a good deal of time prone or standing motionless, watching. So close yet so far As I was following him up the road a zed came after me. Dealing with that, I lost track of him again. I decided to head up to the hospital and climb the crane. At first I saw nothing. After a couple minutes of watching, I spotted him running north along the road. Success! There you are! I followed him. He appeared to stop, holding something in his hands. A compass most likely. Not a veteran, then. He headed up into the dark forested ridge towards Gorka. At this point I lost track of him again, but I figured I would have no trouble spotting him in the open field on the other side. Hmm. I couldn't see him as I emerged. I spent some time scanning. Nothing. Then I saw movement near the gas station. My prey! He ran across the pavement and stopped again. Probably checking directions. Reunited I sprinted down the hill, trying to reach him before he went on the move again. I made it to the road, staying off the pavement so my footsteps wouldn't alert him, drew back an arrow, and shot him in the head. The final moment Arriving at the corpse I saw it was a woman. Reconstructing her path, I figured I tracked her for 3 kilometres. She didn't have much of value, but her bones will be used for arrowheads. Interestingly, she was carrying a book that appeared to have pages previously torn out, and a pen. I wonder where she was going, and if she left any notes along her way.
