What the heck is the Winchester 1866?
-Gews- replied to JimJam (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Boom, headshot. -
Uh, no way! That would be a waste, there is no appreciable difference apart from firing modes. While we're at it, we could add a version of the M1911 with a checkered front strap! I'm sure that would be appreciated by gamers. Or maybe add a Romanian AKM that is the exact same, only more... Romanian.

What the heck is the Winchester 1866?

I don't understand including the Winchester 1866, since it's... from 1866. The main problems with the gun are: 1. Too powerful - it should deal somewhere from 1600 to 2000 damage, not 4500. 2. It's a shotgun - self-explanatory. If they wanted to include a Winchester, they should have included the 1892 or even better, the 1894. The 1892 is also pistol-caliber but is a lot more common these days (and modern) than the 1866, which had a receiver made out of soft brass. They still make a lot of 1892s, and 1892s are what you usually see in cowboy movies. The 1894 fires the .30-30, which is a rifle cartridge a bit more powerful than the 7.62x39mm that the AKM fires (so still one hit on zeds), and it is way more common than any of the pistol caliber Winchesters. It would also give a flatter trajectory and further effective range to starting players. -
I don't see a problem with including the big .50s, even now, but I think a shot to the leg or arm shouldn't kill. I mean, shot in the hand and dead - what? They should just cause you to bleed a lot faster from those locations. Of course that's a problem with ArmA 2's mechanics. I also think most of the weapons need a bump in damage since the nerf, and it shouldn't ALWAYS take 2 chest shots to kill with, say, an Enfield or what-have-you. There should be some kind of percentage involved. Also if we were heading for realism, the CZ550 would deal awesome damage and be a one-shot kill because (-a-) it's chambered in 9.3x62mm, which has almost 1.5 times the energy of the standard 7.62x51mm, and ( -b-) it's a hunting rifle, so it would obviously use expanding ammunition, which would increase damage exponentially.

Mwahahahaha, just had a fun encounter. Snuck into Northwest Airfield at night, full moon, and saw a hero with a chemlight by a barracks about 25m from me. Peeked around a wall and shot him in the back with my M14 AIM, he ran and I followed, snuck a view through the doorway of a shed and saw him on the other side bandaging himself. "Blam blam blam". Put him down, finished him off, stole his GAZ and went to a safe location some kilometres away. Has anyone noticed how heroes always whine a lot about being killed? This guy went on and on and on about the matter. It was like I'd shot God.

A different kind of camp. ^_^ Was present and participating as convoy bound for NWAF got shot to pieces by .50 cals thanks to a friendly bandit. He shot an unsuspecting ghillie with an AS50 as we entered and then we waited in the treeline. I didn't actually do much but it was fun listening to the convoy and people asking for pick-ups talk about their locations in side chat. Trapped several survivors in a hangar. Unfortunately counter-sniper operations got me shortly afterwards, or maybe it was ghillie coming back to loot his body... I think I'm gonna be a bandit now. This was a lot more fun than scrounging Elektro for an shotgun and getting shot five minutes later.

I was in Elektro being chased by zombies and saw a player on the fire station roof, so I ran to the ladder and climbed up as he was climbing down, and let the horde attack him. However 5 seconds later he appeared over the top of the ladder and pointed his Makarov at me... I decided to let him kill me since I wanted to spawn in a different place. He pointed his Makarov at my chest. Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Eight shots in the chest from a couple feet. Nothing much. He reloaded. Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Now I was injured, but still on my feet and able to attack. He reloaded again. Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! The final magazine severely injured me but I was still on my feet. He had to drop his Makarov and equip his hatchet to finish me off. I'm not sure that's entirely realistic. I'm not sure why he didn't headshot me, but whatever. I suspended my disbelief by assuming my player's vest was supposed to be bulletproof. I noticed the nerf effect in single player ArmA too, with the CZ Skorpion - unloading a full magazine into someone's chest would result in them running away while you reloaded. :|

People can load hotter ammunition but it would be almost impossible to have such a drastic effect without some type of explosive charge in the projectile, Perhaps I'll imagine that. I guess it's supposed to shoot NM140 MP.

Oh, and I was just reminded of something unrelated which irritated me... why does the AS50 do almost 5 times the damage of the M107 when they are supposed to use the same cartridge from similar-length barrels in real life? It makes absolutely no sense. :( Stuff like that irritates me... While I'm at it, the Winchester damage should be toned down too, since the 1866 fired the .44 Henry (nowadays they are usually chambered for .44-40) which fired a 200 gr bullet at 1125 fps. The .44-40 will do a bit over 100 fps more, but not much. That type of power isn't much more than many pistols. Using BI's own formula, that should equate to 1692 or 2073 blood damage. Instead it does 4500, which is far too much for the weapon... assuming they are trying to represent solid bullets and not expanding hunting ammunition.

Agreed. The player models do appear to be wearing ballistic vests (although they could just be load-bearing vests) so that could somewhat account for a pistol's ineffectiveness when shooting at the body. Maybe some kind of body armour should be loot in the standalone. Although on the other hand, before the "nerf", the 45s did 4500 damage while the 9mms only did 1389. I think the new values are more accurate when compared to each other (a 45 is not over 3 times as powerful as a 9mm  ), but I think all the damages should be raised.

No exaggeration, I counted, the other guy was dumbfounded as well. I don't see how a substantial number shots could have missed, his gun was about 4 feet from my chest, and I was standing still. Crazy! ^_^
