  1. I'm waiting for the first to what happens... never played Breaking Point.

    No more 50 cals!

Meh... I do two kinds of sniping: 1. Serious shit - no fooling around, the goal is to kill them. 2. Fun shit - totally fooling around, the goal is to get the longest kill. I wasn't interested in the .50s for sniping type #2 because I felt it was far too easy with the 1,000-1,100m view distance (at least on stationary targets). But on the other hand, doing it with a 7.62 is too hard... Hence why I want a .338 / .300 so bad... this is the perfect opportunity to introduce a new rifle. 7.62 at 1000 m = 146 gr, 960 ft/s, 300 ft-lbs energy .300 at 1000 m = 190 gr, 1280 ft/s, 690 ft-lbs energy Not a one-shot kill at any range (perhaps point-blank). More importantly, bolt action, high-powered fixed-magnification scope and with a 3-round magazine. Not OP. Iwannitiwannitiwannit.
  3. True, I don't like arbitrary damage. Ideally I would like "base damage" to be based on the projectile's weight, design, and size, and then modify that by velocity / energy. Extrapolated G1/G5 ballistic coefficient from Doppler radar tests done at Yuma Proving Ground. 122-grain M43 fired from SKS. Muzzle velocity = 2,388 ft/s 200 meters = 1,804 ft/s 400 meters = 1,276 ft/s 1000 meters = 750 ft/s

    No more 50 cals!

Meh, I shot someone either two or three times with a CZ550 at 960 meters and he kept running around. Didn't die. I want something in a larger caliber... the minimum would be .300 Win Mag or thereabouts. 3 round magazine, more recoil, slightly longer reload. I want it.
  5. -Gews-

    Why remove the 50?

M240 = replace with PKM M249 = either replace with RPK-74 or modify it to FN Minimi M4 = leave it in, AR-15 variants are used by several European nations and special forces M24 = replace with any decent 7.62 sniper rifle American weapons aren't more "iconic" either. You can't get much more "iconic" than a Kalashnikov.

    No more 50 cals!

I'm pretty sure BB would have a fit
  7. The VSS fires a round with under 500 ft-lbs of energy. It's not even armor-piercing (SP-5). It's powerful because [a] it's bugged or someone made a "gamey" decision. The AS50 is 5 times as powerful as an M107 because [a] it's bugged or someone made a "gamey" decision.

    Why remove the 50?

Because you wouldn't see AS50s and M107s in a place like Chernarus, much less carried by "survivors". Maybe a Zastava. On the other hand I have no problem with .50s on PvP servers that aren't going for realism... private hives can and should add whatever they like. I only have a problem with them in "vanilla" DayZ and only for the reason mentioned...

    No more 50 cals!

Exactly... and conversely, you shouldn't drop dead from getting shot in the foot. They just need to make changes to the damage handler to make it better. Look at Murcielago's "Real Damage" mod or the ACE damage system. http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?144463-Real-Damage-for-Arma-2
  10. This is true, however this would mean that 7.62x39 damage would look like this: 000m: 4,500 200m: 2,030 400m: 917 As you can see, at a mere 400 meters it would do very little damage. Currently at 400 meters it still does over 2,000 damage, not much but still a threat. In real life the round would still be going 1200-1300 ft/s at 400 meters with only a quarter of the initial energy. However I doubt it would be 1/4 as effective. Going by velocity (momentum), it has roughly half remaining, which I feel is a better correlation with actual "damage" or effect. Neither is perfect, but as long as a certain bullet has sufficient energy to penetrate a human and destroy or damage vital organs (at 400 meters a 7.62x39 is still like a hot 9mm point-blank) I doubt you will see massive variations in actual effectiveness. Edit: Another example would be .45-70, 405 grains at 1,330 ft/s = 1,590 ft-lbs. Right now this would work out to the same damage as a 7.62x39 FMJ.... (they use energy to calculate the initial damage, but damage drop-off corresponds to bullet velocity) Obviously a .45-70 will do more damage than a wee 7.62x39 FMJ, but unfortunately the game doesn't take caliber into account either (although modders can simply alter the damage value).
  11. Bullets do slow down and they tried to match it with real-world ballistics, eg: half velocity = half damage. True, some weapons are significantly more powerful for no reason at all, it's nonsensical. I don't think damage should have such big variations between calibers. I'm trying to make edit some hunting rifles right now, I realized one problem with making expanding ammo more damaging is that it will do more damage to everything, vehicles included. Also it opens up a can of worms when deciding on damage values... does expanding ammo have twice the effect? Then expanding 7.62x39 is still only as powerful as FMJ 7.62 NATO... but if it is higher, everything is a one-shot kill... etc. Damage should be looked at being modified more. Agreed, it would also give people a reason to choose something like an AK-74 or an M4 over an M14 or DMR. Can carry more ammo for the same weight = don't need as much food and can run faster. I would like a bipod system.

    DayZ Gun list

Bizon does 889 damage. Makarov does 813. I don't think the "damages" actually translate into exact blood taken away, though... not sure. Either way it's still a good way to compare weapons.

    No more 50 cals!

The Lapua is actually outright banned. Even private hives have to pull some hijinks before they can add it back into their loot tables. I have no clue know why. As for the Hueys, I can't see any reasonable explanation for it. It's an ex-Soviet state, they'd have ex-Soviet equipment and they wouldn't be interested in 40-year-old American helicopters. They already have Mi-8s. Just a case of DayZ using what's available. The Hueys don't bother me too much but ideally they would be replaced with something else - I hope they aren't in the Standalone or that would seem like lazy development....

    No more 50 cals!

I would like it if they made new models with another couple small hitboxes near the heart or spine or something, so the head wasn't the only highly lethal zone.
  15. For me it is. Anyways the M110 can in no way "replace" the AS50: -weak damage at range -weak damage against vehicles -800-900 meter effective range
  16. No, first off, I don't know what this rifle would plausibly be doing in Chernarus (same with many rifles atm). It's also basically a DMR with zeroing, it doesn't have the capability (read damage) for extra-long range. Private hives, sure, not vanilla though.

    This would be nice, no?

    No more 50 cals!

Hopefully this will be implemented: http://dayzmod.com/forum/index.php?/topic/130854-wind-and-ballistics-system/ I agree, aiming in ArmA is essentially just a matter of pointing a mouse... I can repeatedly hit a target 800 meters away with rapid semi-automatic fire. It's a lot harder in real life. However I don't agree with removing long-range snipers... .50s, yes, but I think we need a replacement that's better than a 7.62x51.

    M203 HE Effective Radius

I just tried standard hand grenades... At my feet one did 60,000 blood damage. 10 meters away it did 12,000 blood damage. More importantly, the first two times it did fatal head and torso damage (grenade "headshot"). About 20 meters away it only did 1,500 blood damage.
  20. At 1,000 meters the 7.62s are doing roughly 3,000 damage... and after the first hit, good luck hitting the now-sprinting target again with a 7.62. :P Hence the "mere scratch" comment. At closer ranges they're still effective, but I've always liked the idea of hurling projectiles looong distances.

    M203 HE Effective Radius

Heh check my edit above... I have to check this out more. The max possible range may be 20 meters. Tentatively speaking (not sure) 0 meters: 22,220 (? maybe 5,555) damage 5 meters: 5,555 damage 10 meters: 2,778 damage 15 meters: 1,389 damage 20 meters: 0 damage Even if that turns out to be true damage seems to vary a bit every time due to all the variables. Also the damage I posted isn't blood taken away, don't compare it to "blood" values. It's just a way of showing how it degrades... Like I said this is something I need to look into more. Edit: still, if it hit 20m away from them... it would do little to no damage.
  22. -Gews-

    M203 HE Effective Radius

indirectHit = 10; indirectHitRange = 5; So, 5 meters max. The damage for this is much more complicated than I previously thought... Edit: actually it seems it can be more than 5 meters. I'll look into this more...
  23. I would like more hunting rifles in various calibers too, I like how you mentioned 1.5-5x and 9.3x62, I'm in the process of trying to make a 1.5-5x scope for a CZ550 in a "real" 9.3x62... it would be done by now but I don't know how to make my own reticle yet. Good luck with that  I remember CheyTac caused a tiny stir a couple years ago by posting this on their website: "CheyTac® M-200 is now available to the civilian market in a mildly detuned civilian edition... ...we developed the M-200 CIV to have the same look and feel of the Military version but in a package that keeps the extreme distance edge with the front line forces of the US and our allies." People obviously had issues with the company saying the "real" version was "too accurate" for civvies, especially when the "neutered" version still cost almost $14,000. I believe CheyTac quickly got rid of the military-only policy.

    No more 50 cals!

I like the .50 cals being removed. I'm not sure I like the MOTIVATION behind the removal though. If it was for "authenticity and realism", good, if it was for "balancing and nerfing", bad! Remove Hueys. What are Hueys doing in a former Soviet Republic anyways? Come on devs, show some balls, kill the Hueys. Keep the Mi-8s though. Anyways a CZ550 or a DMR do next to no damage at long range (1000+ meters). You may as well be swatting players with a feather duster. I want at least a .300 Win Mag, preferably a .338 Lapua so I can actually kill people at long range. I don't even care if they're single-shot target rifles that have to be reloaded each time! I just want something so I can "take the shot". QQ, R4Z0R, QQ.
  25. Hopefully yes, but is it likely...? Maybe if people can convince the community dev team. If so I hope they add the damage and mil dot corrections detailed in this thread. Another long-range rifle would be the CZ550 "Ultimate Hunting" edition in .300 Winchester Magnum. Damage same as above, except it would be a bit less accurate (guaranteed to 1 MOA out to 600 yards) and magazines would only hold 3 cartridges. It could also be re-skinned to black Kevlar instead of walnut.
