And I just want to add, the crossbow should kill mainly by bleeding. It's not a hunting rifle which instantly turns chest cavities to jello, it fires arrows at low speeds. It's a well-known fact that crossbows simply do not have the instant shock and killing power of modern rifles. Arrows cause death by bleeding or suffocation. However, look at hunting broadheads... Clearly very nasty stuff. Razor-sharp blades for cutting large wound channels. I feel like it would be a cool and authentic difference so crossbows didn't feel like "just another gun". Naturally it would be massive bleeding, not the type to let people run behind cover and bandage with a torn-up shirt. No time.

How can we make a players life more important than his gear?

True However the players could be weaker, or stronger. We don't know how much damage they are actually taking. 8000 in the mod was 2/3 of your health. Yet the Mosin can apparently kill in one shot, so blood damage likely doesn't apply.
-
I didn't properly explain it. The ammunition for the Mosin is indeed called B_762x51_Ball, and the magazines are called B_762x51_Ball_Single and B_762x51_Ball_Five. However, this is at the configuration level. The player doesn't see it. They could have called it 5_Round_Banana_Dogs, it makes no difference, because no one playing sees it. The thing that makes the difference are the actual stats taken from real life: muzzle velocity and ballistic coefficient. If they get these two right, I couldn't care less what it's called. However... right now both muzzle velocity and ballistic coefficient are wrong  muzzle velocity is from the M16, ballistic coefficient is from the 7.62x51. This is false, Army data sheets said "50,000 psi" for the 7.62x51, but they actually meant "50,000 CUP", copper units of pressure. It was a mistake. 50,000 CUP is close to 60,000 PSI. The headspace is the problem. Apparently it doesn't work right now. http://www.reddit.com/r/dayz/comments/1t9536/im_surprised_no_ones_talking_about_this/

I'm of the Opinion that KoS will be shorted sight and wasteful....
-Gews- replied to [email protected]'s topic in General Discussion
When we have more zombies, perhaps people will think more before pulling the trigger. We also need zombies to be able to ascend stairs and climb ladders, because right now you can sit in an apartment block or two-story building with impunity. The sheer amount of KoS in the mod wasn't realistic. Even in the worst places, unless there's a full-blown war going on, I doubt everyone's being shot on sight. You'd probably be captured, and then executed. Same end result I guess... However there's nothing wrong with killing everyone you see, this is a sandbox game. It's a valid play style. Otherwise we'd all be playing DayZRP. -
Dean - Sort it out man. Losing your way
-Gews- replied to Thegoon84's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Ruining, no. However there are way too many of them, the things seem more common than food and water. At least half the players I see are wearing them. The spawns need some serious adjustment. I assumed these would be like an easter-egg thing, not common loot... -
Elektro, saw a flashlight beam, ran towards it hoping to slash the guy up with my kitchen knife. Found him inside a building, told him to drop his flashlight... And then he said "Hey man! This is awesome!" and ran around just bubbling with joy. He found a clown mask on a shelf beside him and sounded like he was on cloud 9. Then "you wanted me to drop my light so other players wouldn't see it, right?" Just. Couldn't. Do. It. I'm not that evil.

I think it should suppress the gun, but provide little to no in-game disadvantages. It should just be very rare. Some weapons should be better than others, not everything has to have a drawback for each advantage it gives. Can't use bayonet yet. Haven't got a suppressor either.

I wouldn't exactly call it loud. To me, from a shooter's perspective it sounds more like the default sound is the silenced one... Subsonic 5.56 is generally not used, it often does not have the strength to reliably cycle the action. In addition the 5.56 relies almost entirely on high velocity for its terminal effects, subsonic 5.56 would be very ineffective. It would also have extremely poor ability to penetrate body armor or any barriers. They usually just accept the sonic crack.

I disagree... fiction =/= plausible. A lot of the stuff we're finding and wearing isn't at all plausible, it's entirely for gameplay purposes. They use all sorts of stuff - that doesn't mean you'll see Marines toting their personal M4geries. Using PMAGs isn't quite the same as taking off your issued parts and replacing them. 10 round magazines make little sense. Special Forces, maybe, random Marines in barracks, no. And special forces aren't really the ticket for fighting a zombie apocalypse. These items are 100% for gameplay purposes, just like the so-called PayZ masks everyone's wearing. People would get bored with standard M4s. Realistic? Yes. Authentic? Yes. Fun? .... Well, not to most players. People can come up with a variety of backstories varying from decent to the outright wacky, but it doesn't change the fact certain things just. aren't. plausible. Does that mean they should be removed? Most will say no. But plausible they are not. Don't feel the need to justify every item.

USMC doesn't use Magpul stocks and fore-ends. Not to mention 10, 20, or 40 round magazines. Takistan isn't near Chernarus and you don't see many Afghanis or Iraqis using captured M4s. They have a long tradition of issuing their own Czech rifles.
-
I'll post the obligatory "ALPHER". Hopefully once they add more guns, they redo the spawns and make the M4 the top-of-the-line rare item. People should lust after them like SVD Camos or L85A2 AWSs.

SBR's and fighting from a vehicle in Standalone
-Gews- replied to thomas28's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Some problems: -there are no cars to shoot out of so it makes your gun less powerful for absolutely no advantage -ArmA has a history of ignoring barrel lengths and DayZ isn't nearly as fussy about real-life performance -you can fight indoors just as well with a full-length rifle, if not, people complain and demand "ShackTac movement" If they fix those problems then I'm all for it. I don't want something that's just cosmetic, or unrealistic. And FYI a short barrel does not equal less accuracy, a short barrel usually means a short sight radius and that's the problem, with optics that's not an issue. Personally I don't think most SBRs fit the setting, but that horse bolted a LONG time ago so there's little point in fighting the tide of Magpul accessories and yada-yada-yada. -
There lies your answer. Supposedly the stocks affect it but I haven't checked.
-
It amounts to pretty much the exact same thing, just going on in the background. You're right, I was never much interested in Epoch, or Origins, or the other multifarious mutations.
-
I don't like the idea of these kind of skill trees. You should only gain actual skill through playing the game and learning from mistakes. I don't want to see "level 36 medics" or something like that.

I want a couple more knives. A hunting knife: And a folding knife:

Do the motorcycle helmets provide better head protection than other hats?
-Gews- replied to [email protected]'s topic in General Discussion
Yes, it has some slight protection against gunfire and considerable protection against bleeding and knockout. Ballistic helmet is far better against guns but not as much protection from blunt impacts. Other hats have slight protection but not much. -
You just see the front blade, so not much apparently. Same with no stock and just a naked buffer tube. I didn't try firing mine though but technically it should work fine...
-
If they can get the flashlight beam to reflect and illuminate, that would basically solve the issue. It's almost painful going through buildings only being able to see a circle the size of a garbage can lid,

"Not sure if bug or feature" However I'm hoping "bug", and not feature, because iron sights are almost unusable right now. For all I know this could be slated for fixing - or it could be this way on purpose. Took a picture of aiming at a zed in DayZ, vs a similar situation in ArmA 2. Drew a red box around both zeds. The one in ArmA 2 appeared about twice as large! DayZ ArmA 2 This is made worse for those of us with small monitors. Can't see anything clear enough to aim. The zoom in ArmA 2 was supposed to represent actual visual acuity. Now, it zooms a bit in DayZ as well when you look down the iron sights, but not even as much as when zooming in third or first person free-look.

The Mosin's accuracy is much better, I'm only talking about the M4 in that case. The Mosin isn't very accurate either (8.6 MOA), but that befits a gun that was made in 1932, abused by conscripts and which then lived in a random farmer's barn for the rest of its life.
-
No balancing please! Every gun should be a threat. We all know Dean said he wanted the game to feel "authentic". In real life any gun is a threat to be taken seriously. The guns shouldn't have the mod's massive differences in damage. Ever heard of "diminishing returns"? You can be just as dead from one shot with a 5.56 as with a 7.62. Sorry, I don't want peashooters in this game. Don't want to die, try not to get shot. It's no joke.
