  1. Is there an agreed upon, proper, correct way to use a ladder without dying? No matter what I do my guy falls off as soon as he reaches the top. People say you can't do it with a pistol out but as I understand it there is no way to holster your pistol... This engine. Can't strafe through doorways either :\

Why this mod is the best thing to happen to PC gaming

You probably can't. I didn't say it was a problem that could be fixed, but nobody is going to risk the resultant shit storm of trying to block ports in-game.

Unnecessarily blocking ports, especially without giving me control = direct malware behavior. I could be running an important server on those ports. It doesn't matter if i'm not. Not really comparable to video driver injection, which isn't useful for anything but recording videos and cheating.

ArmA 2: CO in "Top Seller" list

I'm about 99% certain that Arma 3 will include this mode as default. They'd honestly be stupid not to.

I bought the game because of those videos

Yes, I bent my elbows, just like these haggard zombie survivors would do. Going with the "realism" angle to protect the horrible engine isn't going to work against a logical person here, sorry. What? Why would you and your friends even be using direct chat in the first place? Unless you're trying to group up with new people you should just be using an out of game voice chat. You are truly derpy. Some people want immersion, not external programs, which are borderline cheating. Maybe you don't view it that way, I do.

Why this mod is the best thing to happen to PC gaming

Got old pretty fast to me due to the problems with the engine (can't strafe through doorways etc) and the inherent brokenness of direct chat which is why I and many other people bought the game to play this :\

    Loot Mechanics

This is why loot needs to be randomized. I don't care if it's "realistic" that the best stuff is at military/airfield locations...It'd make the game a lot better if you couldn't server-hop. For now, people who focus on exploiting the weak points get a huge advantage over those who play fair.

    The PvP Discussion Thread

I had no idea this thread would take off so much when I made it...I think at this point that you're mostly correct in assuming that being a murderer will mostly function as its own punishment, once proper support systems are in place to identify the criminals (body studying, direct chat, etc) The murdering has gotten a lot better in a week or so, as players get accustomed to the game.
  10. When I was thinking about the problem with players murdering each other for no good reason in DayZ, it occured to me that the missing component is the value of life. Player characters aren't important for any reason if your playstyle doesn't necessitate grouping. Players themselves are no more valuable than the items on their corpse. With the addition of Roles and Information, this would change. A player's life in DayZ would have value. The idea for Roles is similar to perks or traits in other FPS and RPG games. Roles give players valuable abilities based on their imaginary past before the zombie apocalypse. Roles should be useful, but should not dictate the overall gameplay. There should be enough unique Roles so that no two players on a 50 person server would share them. Players do not get to pick Roles, they are automatically assigned when you spawn. Some example suggestions, keep in mind these are just examples and may apply to features that are not currently in-game: Character can pick locks Character can crack safes Character can salvage vehicles, making them require less parts to repair Character can interrogate other characters to get their information Character can reload cartridges (requires special items) I mentioned Information in one of those. The basic idea for Information is that each player spawns with a unique piece of info. You might have a note in your inventory that says "my father buried a safe at X location north of Kamenka." To make things really interesting, sometimes information will rely on other pieces of information. Two players could each have half of the same note, and would have to search each other out. This would be hard to implement and is a little more far fetched. Please take heed that the idea of the note in the inventory is just to provide a player interface for the information. You cannot take someone's information, you cannot loot it or otherwise gain it by killing the person. You can, however, interrogate them under certain conditions, or coerce them into telling you the info even if your intentions aren't pure. Information could thus create mini-quests. Go find your ex-partner's safe and use the combination to open it, or sell the location of the safe to another player who has the safe cracker role. By giving players these additonal ways to interact, none of which are forced and could be completely ignored, the value of life is enhanced. Instead of just going to set locations to find the best items, you may be able to use someone's information to track down a good cache-- or they may use their information to deceive you and set you up. Certainly these ideas should provide leeway for people to be "evil" as well as team up out of genuine teamplay.

Ladders: The true scourge of DayZ

Confirmed in last play that spamming crouch or prone a lot when you dismount the ladder helps.
  12. Jim Gun, I never stated having any problem with PvP in any of my posts, quite the opposite. I have a problem with sociopathic murder of players, which is pointless and bad for gameplay. My suggestions would not "dilute" anything, as someone else just said, if anything they would make the game harder and deeper. Please critically evaluate before you post. It seems like no matter what you suggest, people will say you're "dumbing down". My ideas vastly INCREASE the complexity and depth of PVP. Interrogation could easily work within the confines of the engine. It works like this...Mousewheel player, interrogate (while pointing gun at them), and you gain access to their information. If the mod support of ARMA 2 can't handle that I fail to see how it could handle DayZ to begin with. I'm someone who has extensive experience modding FPS games in the past and I'm quite familiar with the type of ideas that cannot work vs those that can.

Ladders: The true scourge of DayZ

I had actually tried that, but fell doing that too. I'll keep giving it a whirl...Otherwise there will soon be a hilarious youtube montage of my ladder deaths

Food and water being used offline

Kill it. Supplies should only be used during playtime and for about an hour of game time after logging off, to prevent people from logging when they're about to die, waiting for a friend to bring supplies, and then rejoining.

    The PvP Discussion Thread

Murdered in the back of the head again last night...Was more of a tense situation this time though. Could've been prevented, or I could've understood the situation and protected myself better with DC. Any idea when DC might make it back in Rocket?

    92 kills in 1h55m...... wtf

No, really, you'd be laughed out of any college classroom for claiming that human beings aren't altruistic by nature. Yet you saw fit to present your opinion as having equal weight to mine. Now I'm an asshole for pointing out your lack of knowledge on the matter? You believe the way that *you* want the game shapes reality. But that's not the way things work. Open your mind. Lol howaboutno Humans are not altruistic without the confines of society, before we were civilized and in towns you were murdered for food, women, and supplies of various nature, the same it will be in the post-apocalypse. Some people value their humanity but some do not, deal with it or leave. Either decision stop whining like a little schoolgirl. Deviant behavior exists and has always existed and does not reflect on the overall gross altruistic nature of humanity. Of COURSE humans were altruistic without the confines of society, how do you think society came to exist? You really shouldn't be trying to argue this if you haven't formally educated yourself in the matter. I'm not going to go back and forth with you.
