filas02 37 Posted October 13, 2012 This is an idea I've been picking my brain about for the last week or so.So, after doing just about everything there is to do in DayZ (except piloting one of those damned choppers)I started getting the feeling that the game is "dying" for me personally. I just didn't find the fun in storing more, more, more and more gear in my tents, never too use them. So, I've been helped by a few people and helped a few others as well and I've gotta say, I'm loving the feeling. So, what I wanna do now (as you may see in the title) is to coach a "bambi" or a person whom is new to the game.I'm not sure if this is a dumb idea but I feel that if I can help people in a game like DayZ I would be rewarded greatly.I'm looking for someone whom is interested in DayZ but perhaps hasn't gotten the hang of it yet. However, you must have a bit of dedication. What we'll be doing is :- Learning where to go when just spawning.- Learning the importance of backpacks and other useful utilities- Learning which weapons to choose for "your" playstyle- Learning where to find those weapons (heli crash sites and military loot)- Learning how to find and repair damaged vehicles.- Learning how to use and understand maps.- Learning how to interact with unknown players.- Learning how to survive. The person I'm looking for mature players (ages doesn't matter as long as you are mature)I'm not sure how I'm going to accomplish this "coaching" but I have a few ideas. If any other players have some constructive feedback I'd love to hear it.A few "must's" though.- You MUST have a working microphone with a decent mic (Don't wanna get stuck between a rock and a hard place while I can't hear what you are saying)- Unfortunally, because I'm Swedish you must be playing in the EU (otherwise one of us would have massive lag)- You MUST enjoy DayZ even during the "rainy days"If you want to be "coached" I'd love for you to post on this topic or just throw me a PM.Happy DayZ
Welch (DayZ) 756 Posted October 13, 2012 I believe in trial and error learning. Tips can only go so far.
Sula 1205 Posted October 14, 2012 Sounds like a very generous idea. Perhaps New Player Discussion would be a good place to raise this idea. :beans:
Fraggle (DayZ) 15720 Posted October 14, 2012 (edited) Nice idea mate. The mentors do something similar but you sound like you've really thought it through, good luck.P.S - Moved to new player area. Edited October 14, 2012 by Fraggle
mitor 176 Posted October 14, 2012 (edited) Well, I don´t like the idea. The first time you come to Dayz it´s exciting, you don´t know what you are going to find, you are scared of zombis, you think weapons are rare, you find a guy with a military weapon and you think Wow that´s cool, I want to be like you. You are happy because you know adventures await you, you find a vehicle that can be entered and you are so proud because you have repaired the wheels, you are so excited to show it to your friendz...The magic of the newbie. You don´t even know about bandits. :rolleyes:Once you have been played for one month, all the magic has gone. Don´t ruin the magic for newbies. I wouldn´t have liked that someone have come to show me all the secrets...Yes, maybe at the moment, but in retrospective I think it´s not a good idea. filas02 37 Posted October 14, 2012 You have an excellent point, didn't look on it with that perspective. However, there may still be newbies whom would like a tour of the dangerous wasteland of DayZ
Dr.Duff 211 Posted October 14, 2012 I bet there aremany players out there who don't consider themselves noobs in need of your advice still sir, good luck to you and your prodigees.
mitor 176 Posted October 14, 2012 You have an excellent point, didn't look on it with that perspective. However, there may still be newbies whom would like a tour of the dangerous wasteland of DayZProviding them some help is very interesting. But only some help, don´t spoil them the game. ;)I myself have sometimes help some newbies loot cities, but without guiding them anywhere, only protecting them from ruthless bandits and showing them there are friendly players ingame. filas02 37 Posted October 14, 2012 I should not have said "newbies".The word has gotten such a nagetive meaning hasn't it?
mitor 176 Posted October 14, 2012 I didn´t know which word to use for new players, I´m spanish... Anyway I don´t know either wheter he is quoting me or you.
Sula 1205 Posted October 14, 2012 (edited) I still had no idea what was going on after I'd been playing for about 6 weeks and I was desperate for help. So there's always room for a friendly face and a kind word! By the way, I don't think of newbies or bambis as negative words. I think of them as charming and people to help, if they ask. That's the thing, you need only help those who ask for it, not those who don't want it. ;) Edited October 14, 2012 by Sula
mitor 176 Posted October 14, 2012 Indeed, we all have been newbies, or newcomers, or noobs, or rookies, or...Well, I don´t know more synonyms...We are also bambis every time we respawn at the coast.
Sula 1205 Posted October 14, 2012 Filas, there's a brand new bambi begging for help in the Survivor HQ forum. He seems very young to me. Keeps just pleading for people to tell him how to play the game! I'd suggest he would be extremely grateful for your tutoring him. His name is kilz. I've told him, as have others, to post a thread in New Player Discussion and ask specific questions but I've no idea if he has/will. I suspect he means he wants someone to tell him the "point" of the game and how to "win". I doubt being told it's "a sandbox game" will help him. I thought perhaps you might welcome the opportunity to at least offer him help before he goes on a mad rant about how this game is horrible. ;)
filas02 37 Posted October 14, 2012 Thanks Sula! I'll make contact with him.:)
filas02 37 Posted October 14, 2012 Just got in contanct with a player, he's pretty new to the game and knows only the basics. We've just looted Balota and this lucky son of a bitch found a M14 aim as well as a M9 SD, crist. We went into Cherno and found him a ALICE pack so we are now ready to head north.
Sula 1205 Posted October 14, 2012 Holy cow, it took me a month to find that stuff when I first started playing!
The Stoned Wolf 491 Posted October 14, 2012 (edited) I would do it solely for the sake of having something to do (pretty bored right now :P), although I'm guessing you're not taking more experienced players just for the hell of it lol Edited October 14, 2012 by Excision
joebob 117 Posted October 14, 2012 Two points .... and please don't take any of the following as any sort of criticism of the efforts of filas02 or anyone who chooses to help other players. We have worked long and hard to get our training program to its current form and perhaps our experience can help others to achieve their goal.1. While it's true that there is a lot of value in learning the game on your own, it's equally true that players can get discouraged and quit the game entirely out of frustration with the admittedly quirky Day Z system. While some might argue that these players are no great loss, I'd argue that anything that diminishes the player pool is not good for any of us. If we want this franchise to succeed we need to do whatever we can to increase the number of players and their enjoyment of the game. That's why the Trusted Mentors of the Wasteland began and why we continue to train new players in what my partner, Absolut_Zero, likes to call "Chernarus 101." Since then we've added courses on being a TMW Medic and a TMW Bodyguard. We'll be adding advanced courses on PVP, Night Ops, Vehicles and other areas of interest.2. It takes more than a desire to help people. We have a private, passworded server that allows us to provide a more consistent and repeatable training experience as well as an established and detailed step by step syllabus that ensures that all students are learning the same information. It's critical that your trainers be professional and helpful. I've been a trainer for most of my career and we ensure that all Mentors are not only experienced Day Z players but are also the type of person who can work with any student and provide a positive and enjoyable experience. There's a big difference between knowing the game and being able to impart that lesson to the student. While any training in Day Z is subject to the unexpected, the training must be designed to minimize those unexpected occurrences in favor of the lesson to be learned. That takes planning and foresight and organization. You have to think through all of the possibilities and devise alternative strategies that will allow you to continue the training.I hope that filas02 and others will continue in their efforts to make this game more accessible to all gamers and, in the process, increase their own enjoyment of the game.
Sula 1205 Posted October 14, 2012 (edited) Well it's a good advert for yourselves, I guess. I don't support your use of words such as "must" and "critical", with which I disagree. No training is a must or critical for dayz, which is why none is provided by the official source. But good luck in your endeavours. filas02 37 Posted October 14, 2012 I do agree with Joe Shaw, but I must say that DayZ is in fact a game and should be enjoyed as one. The player I took in today had a bit of fun for once, makes everything worth it :)

In my choice of words :D. But I do believe strongly in effective training and I like to think we've done a good job with ours and that fila02 is on the right track with his. filas02 37 Posted October 14, 2012 After seeing this topic expand, I'm getting frequent "help" messages. I'm starting to think I'm over my head here.I can only help 1 person at a time, but I don't know how to spend it.I'm just a normal guy whom spend ALOT of my time playing DayZ, during the week I won't be able to help as much though. So everyone who feels I'm "ignoring them".Trust me, I'm not. I'm just getting too much trafic and I will deal with it in due time.
