tockeR 16 Posted June 14, 2012 Anyone recommend decent software other than fraps for recording long gaming sessions?I have 2 x 2tb hard drives and even an hour of gameplay with fraps is punishing.
kyriel 45 Posted June 14, 2012 Ive been a long time Fraps owner. However I just bought Bandicam. Works just as good, files aren't as large. I think you can get a trial before you buy it.
fujin31@yahoo.com 5 Posted June 14, 2012 Yeah, I think Bandicam is supposed to be better, like Kyriel said.
Mitritch 4 Posted June 14, 2012 You can try dxtory with scaling option used. However, native 1080p footage still eats lots of HDD space...
.:14A41:.Pvt.p4lztZ 3 Posted June 14, 2012 I bought fraps and it sucks that I did. Paying $37 dollars for 2mb was my mistake...works great don't get me wrong, but it's not worth that price point imo. Files are huge and many other little annoyances.I've also tried Taski (open source), but I lack the technical skills to get a decent capture quality. Also, I run audio straight digital so I couldn't get sound recorded properly with it. Perhaps you can get it to work better on your setup. Bandicam. As other have stated. Haven't used it myself though.Few other options: here.
Wüstenfuchs (DayZ) 105 Posted June 14, 2012 You can also try to optimize it so that there is not a significant change to performance when using Fraps. I have Fraps running on one CPU core, while ArmA 2 running on 3 other cores. I also have Fraps recording on another hard drive than where I run ArmA 2 from. With these settings, recording is very small impact in-game.

I did a 2hr session the other day and all together the files came out to a total of almost 3 and a bit terabytes. (Maybe a different codec? using lossless avi :S)My resolution is 1920x1080. I'm going to look into bandicam. The license is only 40$ so it's not really a big deal.
marsilainen 0 Posted June 14, 2012 Im using msi afterburner for overclocking and monitoring stuff. It comes with a video recorder too which is handy. Not sure about codec options.
officer_d82 3 Posted June 14, 2012 Using streaming software is also a good alternative. XSplit, Wirecast, VLC player, etc.
Greasymullet 7 Posted June 14, 2012 Yeah bandicam is nice, Recorded about 20-30 minutes the other day and i believe it was only 1gb. Set at 80 out of 100 quality. (Not sure what that means)
Wüstenfuchs (DayZ) 105 Posted June 14, 2012 There is also another solution, and 100% free: Using VirtualDub. I used to record my games with that before moving on to Fraps. Good thing with VirtualDub is that you can select the codec which it uses to compress the video, and in many of the codecs you can select the compression level. Here's a (quite old) guide for how to use VirtualDub to record games: VirtualDub Game Recording Guide
iamredseal 1 Posted June 14, 2012 Bandicam, PlayClaw, Fraps (good advice from Wüstenfuchs on making it less of an impact)I have been streaming my stuff via XSplit. Then highlighting my videos via Twitch.tv and then uploading them to YT from there. It doesnt effect my HDD space that much at all and it's immediately stored online via Twitch.tv and when I upload to YT. However, if you like going in and doing some video effects/editing/adding music I don't suggest the online streaming method.

Jorden 63 Posted June 14, 2012 I use Fraps. You can use Vdub with the xvid codec to compress them without losing quality as well.
filippo.restivo@hotmail.it 0 Posted June 14, 2012 Dxtory is the best one hands down.If you need any help with the settings just ask.

I also use handbrake to re-encode the output files into more manageable sizes and virtualdub to stitch them into a single file
