I've thought of it myself. It could have same behavior as the arrows for the crossbow so you could pick it up again.

I guess I'm lame for having an opinion then. Because throwing hatchet is so smart and will kill a man in one hit. And obviously everyone will hit a small target with an axe that is not designed for throwing in 30 meters. In short: No.
